Dr. Fontaine accuses DLP of mismanagement

Thompson Fontaine

Former IMF Economist, Dr. Thompson Fontaine, has accused the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) government of “mismanagement” and bringing “poverty and hardship” to the people of the country.

Speaking at a United Workers Party (UWP) convention on the weekend Fontaine said Dominica has been ‘virtually destroyed’ by the present administration.

“For 15 years we have seen a government which has virtually destroyed the beautiful island of Dominica. We have witnessed a government that has taken Dominica from being one of the top countries in the Caribbean to being just before Haiti at the bottom of the Caribbean islands,” he said.

He stated that the DLP inherited a debt of $300 million which has now ballooned to $1.2-billion and counting.

“That government that does not care about the people of Dominica, they claim that they are for the poor, yet they destroyed the single thing that the people of Dominica relied on, agriculture,” he remarked.

Fontaine, who will be contesting the Grand Fond consituency on a UWP ticket at the next general elections, said agriculture made him what he is today and because of its destruction many are in poverty.

“But we are here today as one, friends, and neighbors and family, to ensure that this current administration is a thing of the past,” he stated.

Fontaine said he is throwing his full support behind UWP leader Lennox Linton and said a wind of change is sweeping through the land.

“And so, as I look around people, the noise that you are hearing, is the wind of change that has begun to sweep across this land in Dominica that will also ensure that no longer will men become rich at the expense of the vast majority of Dominica and Dominicans,” he said .

So when Dominicans who have proved that they can achieve the highest professional level abroad chose to return to contribute to the land of their birth something have to be wrong with them? No wonder the best of us are working overseas like Doctor Clarissa Etienne who is with a world organisation just like Doctor Thompson Fontaine was with a world organisation. So if Doctor Etienne wanted to return to serve Dominica something would have to be wrong with her? Dominicans are so ignorant nowadays it is not funny!

For those of you in Dominica who are comparing the cost of living in Dominica compared to living outside of Dominica such as in Canada or the USA, let it be known that you do not have any more trouble surviving in Dominica, compared to living in Canada or the USA–among the other developing countries of the world.

I know this because I have lived in Canada for 40 years. come April 3014, and I was in Dominica no more that 40 days ago–that is August 21, 2013

The cost of food is not difference in price when it is converted back to the international currency–like Canada where I now live, people are able to pay without much trouble others have great difficulty–there is no difference.

In Canada those who do not rent may live in a house or an a condominium apartment, which they claim to have bought, but that house or condo belong to the buyer for as long as he or she can afford to pay the mortgage to the bank–and that payment will either take a lifetime–or the bank will reclaim that house or condo–those buyers in question lose tens of thousands of dollars in interest payment.

From since 2008 when I was in Dominica until August 2013, when I returned–I have seen beautiful houses emerged on almost every hill of Dominica, with tracks turned into roads through the owners of those houses can drive whatever the vehicle or vehicles they use to drive to and from their their housed–for outside business.

This development process continues in progress–I know that the owners of those houses are bold to say–it is mine, no one can take it from me’ There was no such development in sight when I lived in Dominica up to April 1974–the majority of Dominican’s now have all the basic needs which is needed to live a comfortable Lifestyle–this aloes has to do with the choice which they make–the qualii5y of a person’s Life must be conceived, processed, and produced on the grounds of the mind, this Lifestyle will be demonstrated to witnesses through, his works and action.

And so, it seemed to me that men and women are simply including words and phrases that will make their speech sound good–but they are forgetting that the goodness will only manifest in “essence” to people who maintain a sound mind of true wisdom, understanding, and discernment–otherwise that goodness does no good at all.

    • October 4, 2013

And so I have the facts that the cost of living in Dominica is the same or next to no difference in Dominica compared to Canada–as far as the average person is concerned. For example a bottle of Jamaican Rum that is sold for $23,00 in Dominica is sold for no less than “$33.00” in Toronto–that is $85.00 EC. Kentucky fried chicken is the same as in Toronto–just an example

People who are filthy rich in Canada are true Canadians–most of them would have inherited the wealth and material assets from their ancestors from generation to germination–Canada is a rich county form the beginning–through natural resources.

Those who are so-called rich in Dominica, would belong to the same people such as in Canada–meaning that their ancestors left them to share the products of hard works–of which the generations after them will not follow–a few men of Government cannot control that attitude of its people; but that is the problem which causes the standstill or slowdown of a country’s development–we need to acknowledge that truth.

The people who contributed to the development of Canada, are the vast number of people from the outside world–without them Canada would be a land of rich resources in raw materials, still waiting to be processed and produces in the form that is needed for effective survival and advancement in all forms

Some of those from the outside world have made it to the top, but the majority remain the regular people who are fighting for survival–come what may–in Life one is not served on a silver platter–unless they are cheaters, wicked, evil, and corrupt–still for all that silver platter of theirs will eventually crash to the smallest pieces–we have a God of Love and Mighty Power who remains in sole control.

He has said: He will use, foolish things, small things, weak things, and things that do not even exist, to bring the those who think they are wise, those who think they are big and great, those who think strong and mighty, those who think they famous and popular–for He wants no flesh to glory in His present.

Let those who have ears hear what the Spirit is saying!

I know Mr. Fontaine before he left Dominica and while he was out here in the US – he is a good man! Alway stood up for justice from the days of the interschool sports meets in Windsor Park to out here in the diaspora. Get to know the man before you criticize. I support you 100% Thompson!

Believe it or not, Dr. Fontaine is very aware of the economic standing of Dominica because of his previous role. If I weren’t a stark Laborite, I myself would have been inclined to follow him. But to indulge in the political antics of the UWP takes away all of his credibility. He should use his intelligence and awareness to support the current government and not encourage the bitter politics of people who refuse to accept when they have lost…

The Gentle man is dealing with Management Issues! He is making a few points of the present Administration’s mismanagement of the good and resources of Dominica! Its a clear case of YES Or No Or True or False! Can the Government get a good rating for good management or the lack there of! Please Comment on Management issues and not on the messenger! The emotional response if always to blame or hate the messenger! Rationally, Deal with the message! Is it true or False! Yes or No! High time Dominicans get down to issues and stop attacking persons or personalities!
The Question is: Has the government mismanaged the resources and goods of Dominica? Yes or No! Look around and really give the answer from the heart! If Dr Fontaine, wanted to evoke a response from Dominicans, he is doing just that! Good Technique Dr! Seems to me, you didn’t buy your Phd! Could those with Phd, put their hands in the air! Peace and Love, stick to the issues! Its an issue of management, so answer the question and say so help me God! Only God has all the answers, so trying to make human beings look perfect is an exercise of futility!

The truth hurts and like people everywhere we don’t like it when it is bad. We don’t like to be confronted with unvarnished facts, which expose the cruel reality and remove the last shred of false pride. We are rather lulled into believing that everything is not that bad.
Yet, if we are to grow and recover, and regain genuine pride we must first expose the sores that fester, cut out the bad and start rebuilding, right from the bottom up. Yesterday I was besieged by five beggars in the centre of a Roseau, reeking of human waste and decaying garbage, within half an hour, all Dominicans who have lost their human dignity for whatever reason. These are the facts that visitors to our shores are also confronted with whilst just up the road they can admire a sparling palace built for the vanity of man. Yes, it hurts to have to say this because it makes my heart bleed for my own country, which I want to be proud of but psychological manipulation and polityical dogma will get us nowhere.Recognising the stark truth backed by hard, measurable facts will at least give us an opportunity to rebuild, painful as this may be. Dr. Fontaine is like a good doctor, who prescribes unpleasant medicine in an attempt to eradicate the root cause of of a disease rather than suppress the symptons with cosmetic preparations and a smilling bedside manner only.
It will not necessarily make him popular with everyone but I rather face the scalpel and the
unpleasant medication so we can try an restore dignity to the land for all.

So let’s say for the sake of argument that you categorically disagree with his assumption because he did not provide any empirical evidence to support his claims.
What then, is the way forward for Dominica?
    1. No international airport
    2. A failing agricultural sector
    3. High unemployment
    4. Low annual exports and high taxes and import duties?

Thompson Fountain you are a hypocrite and a liar it was you as chief economic officer at the IMF that help to put Dominica under Austerity measures, you first came as a snake under the grass to hijack the labour party after the death of Rosie, when you did not succeed you came to the Freedom Party HQ at a party council meeting and promised us that you would return in 3 years to lead the then Freedom party, you said you had some family matters re your children to take care of and you would return in 2007 to start organizing the party. you disappeared in the big Apple. Now you see the UP choose an uneducated fool to drive the final nail in their coffin, you coming full speed to undermine the foolish and childish leader all of all you that left Dominica just want to come back land on a plane at the airport and take a taxi straight to the parliament well Mr con man we will not accept that in Dominica is only the people that stayed here and went through the grind like the rest of us we following, not counterfeits like you what have you contributed towards the development of Dominica nothing but austerity measures you are nothing but a double bottom drum. Until we Dominicans admit to the fact that Dominica is not going to develop because of it’s geographical nature we will still be fighting each other in the next hundred years for nothing. If you want to characterize development by infrastructure this is just a fact. Dominica as it has been sold and marketed to the rest of the world as the “Nature Island” should put more emphasis on Eco-tourism. Politicians are just going to continue making promises and people are going to continue fighting each other and nothing much is going to be accomplished with these politicians at the helm. They will continue to give hand outs to factions in their communities to make sure they are re-elected each time. Many of these people are driven by selfishness and greed while they allow the rest of the country to tear down each other. We have parishes and every parish should be represented in government. Dominica is too small for big government. We are just wasting money we don’t have. People who see themselves as beneficiaries of a government will continue to sing for their supper with disregard for the wrong perpetrated by the the government in power. Everyone is looking for themselves. We know the truth but fail to talk about it. Come on guys let us face the truth. Dominica is a country that is very difficult to develop when comes to infrastructure. When last have we heard of any group of foreign investors interested in putting millions of dollars of their own for any huge projects in Dominica? Dominica’s beauty lies in it’s people, it’s mountains,it’s rivers,it’s valleys and it’s rain forest and waterfalls. Let us work towards making these natural resources accessible to the rest of the world. This is what was given to us by the creator. Let us put politics aside and work together towards one goal for the betterment of our people. Stop putting politicians first. Put Dominica first.

But the argument is simple, All Skerrit has to do is proove everybody wrong by presenting truth and answer questions from the media or public. I cannot understand why the man will not call a news conference; I cannot understand why he will not take on the opposition in a live debate; I cannot understand why the man will not hold a public meeting and entertain questions. Dr. Fontaine doesn’t have to tell us what we already know. Skeritt’s manner of management is similar to that of the pre independent Dominica, when we depended on good old England. Infrastructure, security were England’s main concern. As far as Skeritt is concerned, the mechanisms that should be put in place to build a solid economy is not part of his forte. You do not have to be an Economist to know that true growth happens in the private sector in a free enterprise system. I DR. Thompson knew about sustainable economic development he would return to Dominica to promote private sector enterprise and unite with his fellow doctors with all their expertise to develop Doninica. Not by words but by deeds. If the USA had to depend on the Government the computer industry would never exist.

  50. Observer
    October 3, 2013

Is Thomson Fontaine going contrary to and questioning the work of his former employer – the IMF. Has Dr. Fontaine forgotten that immediately following the general elections of 2000, he was giving free advice on economic issues to Dominica including giving public support for the IMF program here? Has Dr. Fontaine forgotten the state of Dominica’s finances at that time? Has Dr. Fontaine any recollection about an offer that was made to him to come to work here in the Ministry of Finance to help develop a new economy? Can he remember the response he gave to Pierro? Was that response a reflection of the salary that Mr. Fontaine was interested in? Dr. Fontaine we all know your record here championing the IMF program here. So now you are not with the IMF and in bed with the UWP, which found every reason to fault the IMF program, you can find every reason, I suspect partisan, to criticize the work of your former employer. What you must do now Sir, is to identify the areas of the IMF measures that government has ignored or better still some of the IMF measures that are contrary to the economy you envisage for Dominica. More importantly, it is Ok to say that government’s economic program has failed, but it is more significant if you can tell us what are your plans for the economy. Let us start with the “International Airport Project, the High Speed Ferry and a Dominica based Airline.Sir, are you aware of the source of funding for these very expensive capital outlay projects? What of the maintenance costs, the routes of travel (airline and boat? Are you telling us now that the IMF remedies, including not tobuild aninternational airport, you so scholarly defended whilst in their employ and prescribed as part of your own work in other parts of the world, are no longer applicable? Is that your position, good Dr? You have not explained how agriculture in a post WTO era can bring the type of foreign exchange earnings to Dominica even REMOTLEY comparable to the era of protectionism for our bananas on the EU market. We need soem details. Nice talk is just that. Nice talk. This election the people of Dominica must demand details of alternative programs for developing Dominica. It is not good enough to brandish a PhD, tally embarrassing your leader, and say the details on the program will be released at a later date closer to the election for fear of your ideas being stolen by the government. Enough of the cock and bull story. Welcome in facing the music.

    On a side note…..

I think our Constitution should be changed to ensure that persons who come and run for office have met residential requirements, whether or not they were born in DOminica. They should be a 5 yr minimum residency requirement to be able to run for political office.

Let the individual come in from a grassroots perspective – be on the island so that the individual is aware of the situtaion and can access it properly.

I feel like if you really love your country and want to make a difference – you should be part of that country, live on the soil, work the soil etc before you can try to lead.

      October 3, 2013

Such foolish comments, you are not poor? Well perhaps you are in the minority in Dominica, because approximately ninety-seven (97%) of all the residence of Dominica poor people.

So, you might be among the three (3%) of the people who enjoy’s life, be aware that 3% among them are politicians, are politicians, and drug dealers. Even some people in legitimate business in Dominica are considered poor!

Example, I sent a little above a thousand East Caribbean currency after U. S. currency was converted, when the recipient should up at a place where they claimed they, represents money transfer organizations, such a Western Union, that place in Dominica told the recipient (the person I sent the money to, they did not have enough money to payout a little over a thousand East Caribbean currency.

Mind you an thousand Dominica dollars is equivalent to about $370, U. S., so if an operating business does not have a little more than a thousand dollars on a daily basis, unless you are in that special category, it is time you recognize how poor you are, and how really poor Dominicans are!

Our island, and our people are the poorest in the Western Hemisphere, no if ands, or but when it comes to that.

Shouldn’t it be “Showed” instead of “should”. Just saying.

S. currency was converted, when the recipient should up at a place where they claimed they, represents money transfer organizations, such a Western Union, that place in Dominica told the recipient (the person I sent the money to, they did not have enough money to payout a little over a thousand East Caribbean currency

Western Union Money transfer is financial service, which is supposed to serve people all day long–since their service is dealing with money how can they not be prepared to serve a “single’ customer–regardless of where they are located?

This does not involve even $1000.00 American, which cannot be more than $2,700.00 EC how can a financial service not be prepared to pay out to its recipient such a small amount of money like $1000.00–it that money was to given to them on behalf of that recipient?

Should they not make sure that they muse have the money which their customer will come to claim at least the day before?

I discovered that Western Union Financial Service in Toronto will accept no more than $500.00 on behalf of a customer–I have to know that my recipient will receive that amount–which would be no less than $1300.00 in Dominica–no question about that.

Now, I wonder who is telling the truth here, and why do people have to lie to receiver attention in this world? Because it does not have to be so! Gush man!

  55. Question
    October 3, 2013

So they inherited a $300 million dollar debt?

what was the debt when the UWP was in office and how much did they increase in by.

the DLP has been in power for 15 yrs. And the economy has changed significantly, not only in Dca but worldwide. It collapse and many economies plunged into debt.

So by comparison – 15 yrs in power and amassed roughly 700000000.

the question is – is that logical in today’s economy with the collapse of so many economies.

how worse off is Dominica than others on the international scale?

Dominica is a small undeveloped island whose sole focus was on agriculture and tourism. Two industries which are heavily maximised by other nations.

Dominica is struggling to come out of the hole which it’s in an the impact and the time it takes to do so, will be many times harder and longer than other economies which were way advanced.

Yes, the govt has to do more, but realistically speaking – how is the average person supposed to know how bad these figures are if the playign field was never even. Or how reckless the govt has been especially in an economy where so many nations ahvd to be bailed out of trouble.

Did Dominica had to be bailed out like the European countries? Was our economy worse of than theirs?

how do we average folks make sense of the above when we do not even know how to compare the differences vs similarities?

Are we to just say oh yeah – 1.2billion from $300 mil – that’s crazy, when we have no idea in reality what this means unless we know all the factors etc, comparables etc?

As you can tell, i’m not an economist, however, what is Dr Fountaine’s basis for this if we are not made to understand the info in the context of the realities we live in?

Hi Precious…. Are you really from Grand Fond? Are you telling me you will vote at the next general election for Ivor Stephenson instead of Thompson Fontaine? What kind of “common sense” are you claiming to have? You have enough time to reason, discuss, consult, chat with Thompson. You should also ask for God’s Guidance…. I am sure, THE MOST HIGH GOD will give you enough to make the right decision when the time comes…..

Thompson is just another disgruntled Labourite who was unsuccessful in getting into the coffers of tax payers. Thompson may love his country but he is up to something which we will find out soon. I listened to him on the Ferdina show and his resignation from the IMF is a mystery. Walking away from a stable job when you do not have anything stable makes no sense. He also claimed that he is a professor at the University of Maryland. Has he given that up or does he plan on doing that at the same time as representing the people. Here is what’s going to happen. We ought to be objective, put the issues on the table on how we are going to solve them. No political party is going to solve our problems, but we as a people. We have a duty to hold our leaders accountable because we live in a society that want’s it now, we don’t think of our future and the future of our children. 77. Francisco Telemaque
    October 3, 2013

“That government that does not care about the people of Dominica, they claim that they are for the poor, yet they destroyed the single thing that the people of Dominica relied on, agriculture,” he remarked.”

Thomson, when people are thinking in terms of change in Dominica, to me it would be pointless to continue to cleave to the same old thing, things which has long served there purpose, and though cannot be considered irrelevant, we have to be careful not to embrace, and invoke the same old things, as an attraction to solicit votes.

There was a time when agriculture played a vital role in the development of our country, however in the twenty-first century, our nation dependency on agriculture will cause even more poverty in the country. Try as we may, the production of Bananas shall never return to its peak as it was in the 1950’s and into the 1970’s.

For almost sixty years, we continue to cultivate the same farm land without resting the land, apart from modern day science which teaches that after cultivation of land for five years, the farmer must rest that portion of land for five years without planting any crops (on that piece of land). The way it is right now; all of the land in the country used for farming has been cultivated nonstop for too long, therefore no amount of fertilizer will produce greater yielding of crops.

There is also a Biblical principal regarding that also.

If you are talking agriculture to impress the farmers of Dominica, you are not going to get very far with that, since the old farmers are almost all dead, and the younger, highly scholastically educated generation cares nothing about agriculture; one should not anticipate someone graduating college or university, returning to Dominica, to go into the field of agriculture, even if they have an degree in Agronomy, or Agriculture, and to my knowledge, such are not the science or disciplines our youths go to college, and university to study.

Our priority should be to industrialize the nation, so that the young and educated people can find employment in the country after they graduate college. Let us agree that we cannot abandon certain types of agricultural produce, since our people must eat, and most of our staples do come from the agriculture, however, if you are contemplating an agricultural based economy, your have already failed!

If any nation could succeed on agriculture, the former Soviet Union, Cuba and China would be the most successful nation on the planet during their agricultural eras, and communism would not have failed. Although China is one of the richest nation today, their success derived not from the production of rice, and other agricultural products, but from the industrialization of China, the same applies to Russia, head of the former Soviet Union.

I do not live in Canada, I make Los Angeles California my home; I reside approximately nine miles (outside of Hollywood/Beverly Hills, and about seven miles from Santa Monica, I have no intention of leaving that behind and return to my former misery when I was a kid growing up in Wesley.

I carry enough Bananas on my head when I was about twelve years old, now I am a little old man, ( I doh coming back to involve myself in that oui). My ambitions has long exceeds that, and I suspect if the banana plantations is your only ambition, that is an indication that you are one of the less educated Wesley/Marigotian!

By the way, the man who tag the name Canadian Moo-moo on me daddy, he is now a Canadian, he and all his children, and wife is enjoying life in Toronto, the last time I went over to Canada, I visited their home, Rockson and I sat and drank we beer, while Renwick, his first son, was out front pounding his guitar, entertaining a crowed of Canadians, in a bar, and restaurant out front.

His daughters all have serious professions, as for Wendy, she is a big time entertainer, very big in the Orient, Singapore and all!

(We do coming back to plant bananas you can keep that, our ambition exceeds the banana plantation, if you want some free land I have some I can give to you cause I doh want it oui)!

For your information if you do not know it, the Continents are: Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America and Australia.

It is also said that Dominica (or the islands) was supposed to be part of South America that erosion of soil broke away those islands which made them an entirety. This is what has been said which is not in the history books. There may be some truth to it.

Do you honestly believe that Dominica can rival the likes of China & Brazil in industrialisation? As a first step we need to use what we have to best advantage, so improving our agricultural output would, reduce our food import bill and bring income through the export of our produce. I don’t recall anyone saying that Dominica should depend solely on agriculture for its development, have you?

How could one debate the truth that’s confronting the nation today? It’s undeniable! The nation is governed by the less honorable men in the land whose priority is self indulgence to get as rich as they can.

These ridiculous comments from those who see no wrong with the governance of the country, speak volumes of who we are today, and how far we’re ready to go for change while the politicians continue to get richer at the expense of the poor.
It’s indeed sad and shameful that many is so consumed of their never ending selfishness that once they get what they want, they care less of the country and their children’s future.

The claim by Dr. Fontaine that Dominica owes 1.2 billion means trouble if it’s true. Let’s do the math to figure out how much each Dominican owes. Let’s assume Dominica has 70,000 people. Then let’s divide $1.2 billion /70,000 people. THIS MEANS EACH DOMINICAN OWES $17,142.86. *NOTE: THIS FIGURE VARIES (DEGREASES OR INCREASES) BASE ON POPULATION SIZE; if the population is less than 70,000 then each Dominican owns more. However, if Dominica’s debt is not 1.2 billion then Dr. Fontaine should be held accountable for his statements. These are troubling numbers by every measure whether you are Jew or gentile.

I was on Google looking at the poorest countries in the Caribbean and Dominica seems to make the list of most researchers.. Yet still we should remain quiet???
After 15 yrs and a few infrastructural projects not much has changed in Dominica. Most people are trying to leave Dominica. October 4, 2013

No! I am broadminded enough to know this is not the reason or primary reason, because of the Laborites that you are discouraged from returning to Dominica. It is because you no doubt reside in a bigger and progressive country (which incidentally also has its debts and deficits, unemployment and poverty) where you can get everything possible as long as you have the money to pay for it; even sales on a frequent basis or seasonal (if you reside in a cold climate). Dominicans do not enjoy all of that and at a minimal cost.
You must also understand that dollar for dollar, everything, including housing is much more expensive in Dominica. This has nothing to do with the Laborites.
Most of the goods are imported. This account for the expensive costs.
I have family and friends in Dominica and they are by no means living in poverty. They will agree costs are high but this is all.
We would even think they are better off than some of us who reside in those so-called progressive countries.
Were it not for the high costs which have absolutely nothing to do with the Laborites, many Dominicans would have already returned home for good. Take it from me, one who also resides abroad. Those here would echo my sentiments.

I could tell you. Did you complete high school of all? Look for work. If you are not married, cease having babies. The latter have caused the country to be poor. Unemployed people having babies with also unemployed people, even teenagers having babies with teenagers. Then, men whose income is minimal cannot afford to support many children as some have children with different men, no exception the women with men.
Why is the government blamed for the irresponsibility of some nationals? Let everyone look to themselves and see how they are living, i.e. their lifestyle and served their country. By also not worshipping God, therein lies the answer of their woes.
It is said, those who have computers can afford; they are not poor people. They have to pay for Internet service. These are extra costs. If they could not afford it, they would not be able to purchase it and to pay for the service.

You are so right Mr. Fontaine, but not only did they destroy agriculture and ballooned the debt. The members of the government enriched themselves and that, in my opinion, is worse than all the other things they stand accused of. There is nothing worse than stealing from a poor man or in this instance from a poor country. I am certain when they are voted out of government all Dominicans will be astonished to discover what these guys have done in a relatively short period of time: Chinese MoU, ALBA treaty, the PetroCaribe setup and administration of monies thereof, waste of money at Melville Hall, buying of votes, the IPO affair, selling of passports and the proceeds thereof, total disregard of the constitution on several occasions … and the list goes on and on! I hope all of them will be investigated and if irregularities are found that they will be brought to justice and dealt with in a way that never again a member of government feels brave enough to put themselves above the law of the country.

Very well said Dr. Fontaine! That’s the type of politics I have been yearning for. Mr. Skerrit and the DLP administration have literally run all of us broke while the wind of unaccountable riches resides with only a few of them. It hurts me to drive from Mr. Skerrit’s own constituency and see what he has done to agriculture right there in his own backyard, the Vielle case constituency. He has literally killed there farms and turned them into patients of his Red Clinic Program. For example, there is a young man from his constituency I will simply refer to as ‘Big Steve’; This gentleman use to have a large field of bananas, citruses, and all types of fruits planted when Skerrit became PM. He even had people working the farm for him. Today as we speak when you drive around his area around Gomier flat, I most times feel like crying, especially having known the man myself and remembering what he said when Skerrit was made the PM. Folks not only that, but since Skerrit became PM 8 out of every 10 young men you meet from his own village is either paro or jobless, or …, while Mr. Skerrit himself has gotton unbelievably rich.
What even hurts more is to see how Mr. Skerrit has a team that passes from one labour house to another giving out $100.00 every month and during election giving out up to $20,000 to certain families in the name of housing development. Strangely enough, nobody’s house is improved and every election the same set gets that money and no one investigates where that money is coming from, to see if it it legit, and then if it is tax payers money so they could follows up to see if money was put to use as said. So yes Dr. Fountain you are on track and I do hope DNO does not delete my comments but rather do an investigation so the public could know the truth.

My friend and former SMA classmate Thompson Fontaine stated that for 15 years we have witnessed a government that has taken Dominica from being one of the top countries in the Caribbean to being just before Haiti at the bottom of the Caribbean islands.

    Really? Seriously?

I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt Thompson – please give us facts & figures; remember, we are entitled to our own opinions – but not our own set of facts.

Subjectivity my rass.. Get a copy of the gazette if you can read and understand. You all are quick to get personal and pretend to want to be open minded and fair. It is not his job to give you jack, since you want to come across as learned, tell us what you know with empirical data. You are entitled to your opinion, but not to be the voice of reason for all and sundry, neither your own set of facts.

Did you or are you going to ask skerritt to produce facts and figure in support of his assertion that ” we (Dominica ) are doing better than most ” and don’t repeat the foolishness that Dominicans are paying the mortgages of people in America. So until you’ve done that you are in no position to demand anything from Thompson

    • He TF
      October 3, 2013

HE was there all the time with his band of bandits from the Diaspora.

He is only visible when leaders are not qualified!! When Perro was PM he was very visible because the man did not have a degree and did not have a doctorate like him. So Charles depended on him for bad advise. It was he that wanted Dominica to have undergone a more burdensome austerity program under the IMF.

One of his sidekick went as far as saying is dry bread and water we in Dominica would have had to endure!!! A union leader upon hearing that dry bread and water statement went and opened his own supermarket for his membership but is Charlo alone that affected the company fortunes.

Now if the Country’s economy is that bad as this man states, you can just imagine the amount of taxes we will have to repay when he becomes minister of Finance.

I rather trust Skerrit everyday than to give TF a chance!!! I do not like to hear the pronunciation of his initials … it have me worried!!! Satan will try and correct sin. Alas DNO we cannot afford others. At least those there have conscience.

He has been developing the United States economy.
He has given nothing back to the country. He was asked to help develop the country when it was under crisis, he chose not to, but took a big job with the IMF. SHAME ON HIM, but today he and the rest of his clonies want to come back in the land they say that have plenty misery.

Your questions bear no merit. If i were Thompson, i’d say I was overseas, studying, learning, gaining experience in the field of economics, building my resume to the point where I can now return to emply my knowledge and experience to the benefit of Dominica. Could it not be that now he has decided to “give back” as you put it?

You are comfortable in your nice life in the USA. I hope you have renounce your citizenship before you present yourself for election.

I am not poor and I guess you are one of the Dominican Diaspora running the country by remote. control. Stop making people believe Dominica is in crisis. We are not. We are just feeling the effects of the global economic crisis.
You know better Fontaine so stop trying to fool the people. Instead educate them. Don’t say what you think the UWP want you to say but instead what you know to be the truth.

You cannot defend your mismanagement claim against the government because apart from the Freedom Party in Miss Charles days, the DLP is the government that is doing the best job in the management of funds whether it is loan or grant.

Stop fooling yourself and others because deep down you know your claims are not true.

Disappointed in you. Best you stay out of politics.

The Government owe you access to a decent job to earn a decent wage to support yourself and your children and be able to afford decent housing.
The government does not owe you a house!! We need to get rid of the government dependence mentality!!

      • Me too
        October 3, 2013

I am totally against the idea of Government dependency for anything. When people think that government owe them everything then – what is created is mental poverty. Which in turn translates into LAZINESS, CRIMINALITY, CHILDREN WITHOUT FATHER etc, etc. Get up Take charge and fight for what you want. JEHOVAH IS YOUR ONLY SOURCE and His word says “HE who don’t work shall not eat” Even God hates laziness etc

      • October 3, 2013

Government does not owe you a house!!! really! What about the housing revolution that austrie spoke about why u did not say s that then what about the red clinic skerit use treasury money my to give his supporters large amount of money to buy furnitures

@ Hurtault-It is indeed!!!scary) The truth is our people aren’t concerned with data and this kind of information though available to them, because we simply don’t like reading or those of us who do, find excuses such as “even the USA is heavily indebted…”

        October 3, 2013

Dominicans don’t like to read and discuss issues from an objective factual, informed position. They wait on everybody else to tell them and then either defend, slander or live up proudly to Pierros’ labeling theory. I’m appalled that people choose to get so personal over issues that they should take a step back, and analyze how it’s going to affect them and their children. In 2013 it’s truly embarrassing reading through some of these comments.

the fact that you don’t even know that, and you have access to the internet is the sad part.

no offense but this is why I feel there is no hope for Dominica. While I’ve taken it upon myself to read our most recent IMF report, Most Sherritise/laborites dont even care, they think that is irrelevant.

And who is your minister of finance?

keep supporting the foolishness in the House of assembly, when UWP try to protest a Budget you guys calling them stupid, in the end you wonder why you must live paycheck to paycheck.

@ True to the Bone: You need not worry about Thompson and his US passport that you claim he has. Stop running your mouth on things you have no knowledge of. Have you ever seen Thompson with a US Passport? FYI US Citizens don’t need visas to enter Canada, Thompson even living in the US needed one. I’m not asking you, I’m telling you. Deal with the issues, and stop getting personal, you just might learn something valuable, whether you support him or not.
