James in charge – again

Edison James

United Workers Party Executive has re-elected Edison James as its new political leader.
Sixty-eight year old James, who has been serving as the president of that party for three years, replaces Ron Green who served for three years as UWP political leader.

James told the UWP’s 22nd Delegates Convention in LaPlaine on Sunday moments after the announcement that he is ready to lead the party into successful general elections whenever it is called.

“I have decided to give up on this function as political leader but you have enthusiastically invited me to serve once more. There is no reluctance on my part to put everything that I have into implementing these functions”.

“I want to thank the immediate past leader for the work he has done in leading us over the last several years. I want also to say that it was my privilege to serve as president of your party,” he said.

James said he is also “totally” committed to the cause to bring about the change that is necessary for Dominica’s forward movement.  He said.“Our country must move from a position in which we have been made to be beggars. We welcome aid but we must put greater emphasis on self reliance,”

Responding to those who have been complaining that James is old and has expired, he said “they said that I am like a ripe banana. But I say to those people that in your happiness, this brain in here might be sixty eight years old, but the waist is strong. Don’t test me,”

Former parliamentary opposition leader Hector John is now the new Deputy leader, with Brian Linton Public Relations Officer.

The UWP’s new president is Ezekiel Bazil, Assistant Secretary Christabelle Auguiste and Treasurer Lambert Charles.

Former UWP Leader Ron Green was elected as a trustee.

Dear Mr. James, Congratulations. We in the Roseau Valley support you. Tell us Sir, who is the UWP Care Taker for the Roseau Valley constituency? Who is will be contesting the next general elections to get honest, sincere and dedicated representation on behalf of the people of the Roseau Valley? Are we preparing to get rid of the engineer of the allegations of corruption in the Labour Party – those who are at the center of Garbage Bin fiasco, the Fertilizer issue, and the purchase of housing material supplies. Is the gentleman –Mr. Charles, who gave the vote of thanks at your convention still interested? Let us know.

how old is edison james? 69? i am not being negative here, but instead of going forward uwp is going back? the days of old leadership is so over in the entire world. edison was too old ten yrs ago. we have had him, and he has been discarded. the party needs new leadership, and i mean new, not a disguise or a plaster to patch things up. they need policies, strategies and people that the country can believe in. they have lost all faith in the majority. they need to reinvent everything about the party, drop the entire skerrit thing and concentrate on getting in power. thats the first step. wanna change things? win the election

this voter ID is the form white supremacist used to keep black people from voting in the JIM crow era. It is something the white people rejected. It is against the interest of the common man and an infringement of civil liberties.
Why is the worker party wanting to inflict such a divisive and backward institution on Dominicans, why are they trying to remove freedom to vote from Dominicans. dominica does not need ID. we are a free people.

    Stop the hating.

Political parties don’t rise to power on their own free will. The people must elect them.

It was about time. Mr Eddison welcome back. I am a fan of Ron Green and do love him but this is not a game about who you love best. It is what is best for the party and Dominica on a whole. This time Mr. Edison do not let those who called for you to step down do it again. They know exactly why they do not want you there. However let me just caution you….if you mess around and start playing the fool I will be one of them to call for your resignation or never vote UWP again.

I speak on behalf of the young people in this country that we must uphold our status to move Dominica forward. The old haven’t wisen up as yet. listen to their talk, they are corrupting us to a nation who will have no respect for authority, to only show up at Parliament when our salaries are close and lack of ethical approach.

God call us because we are strong, because we have the know how and the wisdom in all things. Put down the pen and paper get with the technology stop drinking milk and eat meat, now is the time for us to rule. Are we going to take back corruption from the UWP Government whom their leader Eddison James cannot tell us where the Money for that the diaspora raised in New York for the International Airport?

Is he the same one who testified in court that he knew that Ron Greene was a citizen of the USA and he was well a citizen of the same? What utter nonesense. You cannot justify yourself by trying to remove the Mote IN SKERITT’S EYES AND YOU HAVE A BEAM IN YOUR’S.

Young people , it’s time for us to rise and create a vibrant opposition party who has VISION to contest and take Dominica to a higher level, off with the UWP. DFP needs to rise and take it’s rightfull place.

    God Bless Dominica.

When will some people like you know that only God saves. No human being can save Dominica and by no means sinful ones.
Was he not the one who sold Dominica passports in former years as PM to Chinese people? The Canadian immigration caught them with the passports. This has resulted in DA nationals having to go through the trouble, exertion and cost of getting a Visa to visit Canada. Correct me if I erred.
If he is the one, is he the same one whom some DA Nationals want as a future PM? How quickly do some people forget and once again find themselves in the soup again and a worst one.

When will these UWP supporters recognize that Dominicans do not like Edison James as a person, a politician and certainly as a Prime Minister. Nobody owes this man anything. This is about leadership of a country not just a mere classroom of 20-30 pupils or an old proven nurse skilled in the profession. There is a significant difference in responsibilities, besides Eddo brings nothing new or different to the table but the same old adage. Let’s see how we can slander the government so that we will get support. Why should UWP priority be to appeal to the public for funds towards appealing the latest court ruling that they are most likely to lose again? Why not invest in developing a mandate that deals with the economics of the country? UWP does need God’s blessing but firt they must repent for their transgressions!

I think this is an excellent move. We need to get, strong, intelligent and experience leadership to move us out of the place where we have gone. I believe strongly that Eddison James together with the rest of the team are the ones to do that. We as Dominicans we chose a young leader and where did that bring us? To a country bordering on Dictatorship, poverty, mendecancie, dependency, corruption and economic failure. Age is just a number and not important what is important is the capability, fairness, truth, charisma, intelligence and determination of a leader and we have all that in Eddison James. I support him all the way! I believe why so many persons are upset with this decision is that Eddision James is a force to be reckoned with. God Bless you Eddison!

    They cannot challenge your intelligence.

They cannot challenge your track record. (Ask Timothy)

They cannot challenge your honesty and integrity. (Ask Komkom and Ian)

For years, they called you corrupt, but later pleaded guilty in court for repeating the allegations on Mr. Astaphan.

Sir, welcome back! In Dominica, the DLP and their hooligans have created this culture that a Prime Minister MUST be “young”. Most other developed and developing countries have Prime Ministers who are in the age range of Mr. James.

    Antigua – Balwin Spencer, 64

St. Lucia – Kenny Anthoy, 61

St. Vincent – Ralph Gonzolves, 66

    Barbados – Freundel Stuart, 61

    Trinidad – Kamla Persad, 60

    Guyana – Sam Hinds, 69

    Grenada – Keith Mitchel, 66

Jamaica – Portia Simpson Miller, 67

And I can go on and on and on and on.

It is only in Dominica we have developed a mentality that a Prime Minister MUST BE in his 30’s. Look at the blouse Dominica getting under the “young man”, but they still there talking none sense.

Let me make it clear to these labourites, the UWP and it’s supporters have a right to elect who ever they want to lead. It is not allu business who leading our party. Allu and allu foolish mentality can continue to wallow in ignorance. Go find out the ages of Charles Savarin, Mathew Walters, Ambrose George and etc and tell me if is “YOUNG” allu so like, while don’t they go home?

For once in allu life, go learn something sensible to repeat.

Mr. James is a power house and time will tell a wonderful story!

    • Observer
      January 16, 2012

All the above are seating Prime Ministers. Edison James is not Prime Minister yet. By the time he becomes PM again, if it happens soon (Three years) he will be in his 70’s. What a “power house’ he is indeed. Julius Timothy can attest to that ‘power house” – simply underming those he doesn’t want.

Ralph gonsalves 66 has been in office for over a decade. Persad of Trinidad 60 is about 2 years in office. There is a crisis of leadership in the UWP. even the blind can see that. Once again the old guard of the u.w.p could not resist the the urge to hold on to the reins of power.Sadly, mr John who had been seen as to much of a “softee”, though an intelligent man,was found to be unsuitable to continue as opposition leader. Was it a matter of recycling the old guard? Why didn’t Mr John assert himself and make his mark as opposition leader? Why didn’t he set the tone for the party’s forward movement instead of simply following and toeing the party line? Was this the agreement that they made? Or was he not verbally destructive enough? I suspect he has now been dumped into the party’s recycling bin for further consideration if and when it becomes necessary to use him to further Mr James’ never ending desire for political power.

So is Mr James going to be the new leader of the opposition . . officially?
As leader, Mr James has previously lost elections to the late PM Eugenia, to the late PM Douglas, and to PM Skerrit.
And lost the most recent election to Skerrit as acknowledged string-pulling party leader.
Can anyone indicate to me why Mr Edison Chenfil James, who is yet to accept any of his party’s last 3 election defeats, and who is a confirmed LOSER, is the best person to take us to the next Poll?

Not a worker but I think this is good. For both the UWP and Dominica. Dominica needs a more vibrant opposition. It’s kind of funny using the word ” vibrant” in relation to a sixty eight year old man. But as political leadership goes, he’s the best the UWP have to offer right now. And besides he is a smart man.

    • Way Papa
      January 16, 2012

Why do you think he is the best? Here these men are talking about the youth, the youth, why didn’t Mr. James say he will groom Hector, Ronnie, Eziekel or one of the younger men in his camp to do the job? I have always maintained that Mr. James does not want to give up the party that he started.

Who talks about youth more than the DLP? After all that is why they now have their current leader. Yet this party has no youth EXCEPT skerrit within its TOP ranks as compared to the UWP

You cannot continue to stay out of the house and expect people to vote any of you in office come the next general election. Is that the most correct Title that the article deserves? The title conjures an erroneous perception. The Party’s delegates voted James as Party Leader. I do think and many would agree that he did not take charge again. The party went through a democratic process and elected James, given his experience, capabilities, intellect, articulation of the issues, fearlessness, committment and hard-work. Age is just a number.

Really, Dominicans must rally behind Electoral Reform. It is not a Political Party thing. We must save Dominica.
About 7 years ago, the “Independent Electoral Commission recommended to Govt. for funds to provide Voter ID cards and to Clean Up the unclean Voters’ list. Up to this day, Nothing. No $$$$$ to the Electoral Commission.

Is the opposition wrong to demand that Govt. provide the funds to the Commission? Again, the Constitution guarantees, give the Electoral commission the RIGHT so to do, provide Voter ID Cards, Clkean up the Voters’ list and other vital refiorms or changes needed/ Election campaign funding is also an issue to be seriously and quickly dealt with.

Why are a FEW people allowed to continue to rape our Constitution like that? Our elections in Dominica could no longer be deemed FREE and FAIR without Electoral Reforms. The opposition will continue to lead the fight to ensure Electoral Reforms as a necessary step towards a Free and Fair electoral process. If no reform our rights will be further trampled upon and thrown out of the window.

Every democracy, need a stong opposition party. Go to the house and debate the issues maturely. Do not denigrate the character of others. Show the people how the UWP plan to manage the affairs of the country if elected.

God bless all DA’s sons and daughters! One love to all Dominicans!
