Former DLP candidate endorses UWP

st-hilliaire-265x300 (1)A former candidate of the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has thrown his support behind the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) in Dominica.

Less than one week before people go to the polls to elect a new government, Griffin St. Hilaire who contested the 1995 elections for the DLP believes the Skerrit led administration has deceived the people and should be voted out.

St. Hilaire lives in Geneva Switzerland and works in the UN office there.

“Let us put aside, all our petty prejudices. Let us put aside whatever differences we may have had with the United Workers Party (UWP) in the past and rally behind this team to remove this government,” he said to cheering party supporters in the capital city Roseau on Monday.

According to St. Hilaire, “it is not an easy task when you are dealing with fellas who are unscrupulous, have no principles and will do anything to remain in power.”

“We have to bring down the full force of the people on them and put the brakes on them…come December 8th, I am asking you, I am begging you please support whichever candidate that is going up in your constituency and vote for the saw so that the future of our children will be better, so that we will have jobs and Dominica will be a prosperous society once more,” he said.

St. Hilaire has become a regular speaker on the platform of the UWP in this 2014 general election.

Labour Party advocate, Tony Astaphan, has said that St. Hilaire was “disgruntled” because he did not become the leader of the DLP instead of Roosevelt Skerrit.

  1. Red Eyes Dilemma
    December 7, 2014

I read with amazement the various comments against Griffin St. Hilaire and wonder whether those who criticize him wish to control his thoughts and perspective? It appears that because someone had a falling out with a party, they have no right to participate in national politics and they cannot be objective for fear of this vicious attack on their character by those who are themselves blind folded by the cultism of Labour politics and who suffer from red eyes or political glaucoma in Dominica. It is so evident, the number of economic slaves who follow and support the DLP, it makes me feel sorry for them. The saying is so true, ” when Dominicans love you, they will love your sins and when they hate you, they will hate your righteousness”. The Almighty God whose name the DLP abuses encouraged and supported by highly paid local and foreign RELIGIOUS (NOT SPIRITUAL) agents/singers like Mc Klurkin ($250,000.00), is not asleep!!!! No one seems to recognise that the true and massive benefactors of Labour are the apologists like Tony Astaphan who makes a kill on legal fees and the one who speaks about Drones who is bankrupt and being bailed out by PM all the time….. Sing for your supper, eat at the trough, while the rest of DOMINICANS languish and some get some crumbs from the table………….MONDAY 8TH DEC: Last chance to avoid full dictatorship and economic collapse. TAKE HEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what.. I keep saying to myself. Here are so many negative comments re Dominica. It’s like This place is the worst place on earth, p Yet still people can still go to restaurants, buy costume for carnival join a band sometimes one person is in 2-3 bands different costumes, buy tickets for creole festival.. Go to look at cricket at international games, have parties, weddings christening and invite 100 people and
more +moppets, and still hVe extr food, have private transportation, big block houses. Paint thier homes every Christmas, and the list goes on.. When around the world people are starving to death.. I mean my god.. You all should really stop painting a grim picture of dominica..

Just last evening I looked at a program on Niorobi a capital in Kenya with 3 million + inhabitants, where they literally go from hand to mouth which implies if there is nothing in the hand then nothing goes to the mouth. And yet still you all sit behind your computers and make these kinds of dreadful remarks.. I really feel sad… It’s a good thing I can’t be swayed and be manipulated as I do go back home to dominica and see for myself.. Of course there can be improvements especially in the hospitality industry, but to talk about change I wish to know from what to what. Dollar to cents. Male into female. Male pregnancies instead of female.. Please be more precise because if truth be told you all are really living In a paradise.. And if griffin is really honest he will tell you all to live in Switzetland is not a bread of roses.. It is extremely expensive. And if you don’t have a 5 ec dollar which is 2,50 chf you can’t eat.. So stop this mis leading talk about lovely dominica and give thanks and praise to the Almighty that you can still breathe clean unpolluated air and drink clean fresh water… You all live much better than some of us who are in foreign.

Members of the UWP should be real concerned of the appearance of griffin St. Hilliare..am not saying that Rosie is turning in his grave this is not for me to say.. All I can say is there will be cause for mucho concern in the UWP camp.. Lennox has a big mouth with slot of experience in a few organisations. However griffin is very educated an accountant by profession… And .. So my friends we are all in Dominica seeking Eldorado..

Mr. Editor, any particular reason why my comment, submitted earlier today (about 5:45 am) was deleted and not published. It does not even say it is being reviewed. It just disappeared. Was I disrespectful, libelous or slanderous, telling a complete lie? Why so many of my comments are just not published and I see in so many other stories a litany of untruths, half truths, innuendos and simply and scandalous matters receiving the Editor’s and management’s blessing. What is the explanation?

ADMIN: Our site has been experiencing technical issues. Your comment was not deleted by us. If it were, it probably was the issues we are experiencing right now. Please be patient. We are working to rectify this issue.

    • Francisco Telemaque
      December 6, 2014

I do believe that somebody has the capability of invading the site, and extracting the comments of some submission, especially if the comments are critical, and not in favor the Labor Party. I wrote a comment on the issue of a certain man I know is the responsible source of providing tickets to the hundreds of people traveling to Dominica for the purpose of voting Labor.

I identified two places where people have received tickets to travel, some of the people I know personally, and they are in the hundreds!

That did not get cleared for posting, secondly I submitted something regarding the claimed arson: that was gone within seconds. If the administration is not deleting people post, someone perhaps even within DNO may be obstructing, and preventing critical comments from getting cleared.

We never can tell, but something is radically wrong!

The site is extremely slow: When I insert Dominicanewsonline.com into my browser, most of the time the search engine informs me “the site you are trying to reach does not exist.” I am aware that if there is plenty of activity, that could slow the site down, nevertheless, my connecting system is Wi-Fi, very fast, I should not have any difficulties gaining access to the site. I had IP check on there problem, when I could get in, and they informed me that the problem is definitely is with the site.

If I use Dial Up connection, it never connects lately.

I totally agree with the veteran labour rights. The principles that labour stood for in the 80’s, 90’s and the early 2000’s they no longer stand for it. So men of principles will definitely move away from them because these guys were the grassroots members who were there from the beginning. I salute those member who put Dominica and its population before party. Men of principles. Those I can standby and go the way. I was a young member of DLM in the early days and call all names in Marigot because we stood for the empowerment of Dominican, so when members of the DLM who help revatalize the DLP see those principles being eroded, they have no other option than to move away from the Skerrritt Labour Party who to them are renegade freedom it’s.

griffin is still living in 2000. Remember when went up against Skerrit for leadership of the party? To this day he has not accepted the results of the vote for leadership at the delegates conference. he has never forgiven the party and Skerrit. He left for Geneva and virtually disappeared from the political landscape for a long while until the run-up to the 2009 general elections.. Then his name came up as a posible candidate for the UWP in Wesley. What ever happened between them, thatwas not to be. he disappeared again. Never word was heard from him.

Suddenly out of the “blue”, yest out of the blue, Griffin appears and want the Dominican people tolisten to him. He has resigned his job from the UN. he is still very much a career UN employee based in one of the more affluent countries – Switzerland. He does not live here and face the challenges of survival. He is hardly heard and any issue. Yet still he thinks he can hold sway to public opinion on who should run the affairs of Dominica? Sorry Griffin, your influence stops in Wesley. You all guys are spent political bullets. You guys have no political currency here no matter how many of you. Remember when in the 1990s Rosie wanted you to run for elections here? Remember how long it took you to decide and when the opportunity came for Geneva you promptly resigned a senator position and took off to the comfort of working for the UN and living in Switzerland. You were not concerned about us. Where were you when went through our austerity? In fact where are you today? You were a regular caller to the talkshows from your base in Europe. that has stopped for perhaps five years now. You do not live here. We do. You do not shop at the same supermarkets, or send your children to the same school as we do. You do not buy gas form the same pump as we do. You came here for elections purposes only and to demonstrate your disdain for the man who defeated you at leadership contest. You still begrudge the DLP for that. Griffin, hold your peace, save your opinion for yourself and your family in Wesley. Roosevelt Skerrit loves us and we love him. We will vote for him. He ishere with us and live withus. See you on the plane back to Geneva soon.

I love my children very much. But if they are not doing good, disrespectful etc., I will I have to let them know and if I have to punish them one way or the other. We might love a party or individual, but if it is detrimental to us and the country, We have to speak out verbally or otherwise. We are human beings, and are not idols. We feel pain and frustration. We have to give another person a chance, this life. If you have an employee and they are not doing their jobs well or bringing down the business, you will get them out.

Life is about change. That’s the bottom line. Fifteen years, time to go, give someone and some others a chance. Dominica is our lovely country which belongs to us and not a few. Especially when we are paying them with tax payers monies. Lord make us make wise decisions in this critical election time. Love for our Dominica, love for all each other.

Another thing Skerrit cannot make any deal or sign any contract of entre any agreement on behalf of the Commonwealth of Dominica and it’s people all his authority went away when the office dissolved .

Skerrit cannot under the election law give direction or order the Police they are officers of the state of Dominica only, Skerrit is just a regular individual person on the Island. Every time someone backs the UWP this man says they are disgruntled. Does it not occure to him that these disgruntlers have been in the government, saw the corruption and decided they wanted none of it and left. You would have to be very deft not to know that. Just see where StHillaire works – in one of the biggest and very important institutions in Europe and very respected as well. The man have seen, at least more that this Astaphan guy. I have been a staunch Freedomite in the past but looking at the transformation of the new UWP, professionals, well educated groupe of people deserve to govern come December 9th. Every Freedomite on the island should join hands this time and throw their support with the UWP and make sure they get Skerrit and his henchmen out. See he is trying to get sumpathy, by begging his supporters to give him a landslide on Monday. Claims he know who set the fire at the airport. Tony Astaphan you should tell the public why Roosy Douglas refuse to accept your candidacy for Roseau north and pick Patrick John instead, is it because he new, he new, he new!!!

    December 4, 2014

Dear People, who are targeting the PM Skerrit and others through jealousy and greed, Ponder on the book of Daniel and see what is happening. Gregoire and Griffin becareful of the trap our hole you dig for someone, you may fall in it. The old and young are praying for PM, remember that.

    “Daniel 6:4-22

4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”

6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever! 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den. 8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.

10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”

The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”

13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”

16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! 22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

Griffin St. Hilaire ponder on Daniel and think of what you are saying and doing. And since you do not have sins, throw the first stone, okay my brother. I voting Athenia this time around sorry. So what you and Gregoire doing her is not vote all you come and vote. So what now. Shame.

    Daniel 6:4

“So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him.

    Okay Mr. St. Hilaire

I guess it is okay for you to come to Dominica from Geneva two or three weeks before elections, vote as an overseas Dominican and encourage other people to impose the UWP Government on those of us who live here(as your colleagues would say) and then go back to your UN job in Geneva. I guess it is only wrong when the Labour Party supporters do it?

I expect to see one at least one more major endorsement before Friday evening. It is just a pity that you all are deceiving people just as you are accusing Mr. Skerrit of doing. It is your democratic right to change sides but don’t try to drag everybody with you when you are not giving them the full information to assess the credibility of your message.

Frankly, I don’t think that the Labour party folks are saints and they probably deserve some of the flack that they are getting, but trust me, if they continue to survive this onslaught, twelve years or so and counting on the radio, TV and on media in the diaspora, just know that Dominicans are not as gullible as you all think they are and they probably view you all as worse than the Labour party with all its faults! That’s a bitter pill to swallow!

It seems like tony astaphans is the leader of the DLP an not skeritt. Where in the world you ever hear a finance minister propose a salary raise from donations from friendly governments. You call that prudence. I am still holding hope that Dominicans are smart people and more will come out vote for what is right.

That is not news he endorsed the uwp a long time ago. It’s always those who wanted something from the government but did not get it. They only supported Skerrit because they thought that he was a little boy who could easily be manipulated. What we are seeing now folks is the disappointment of finding out that Skerrit is a strong leader and so the plot began to send him into political oblivion by those with a sense of entitlement because of their personal achievements. Well, surprise, surprise! You can’t keep a good man down. Long live Skerrit! Dominica is much better having known him. thank you sir for elevating our little island.

Griffin St Hilaire has been a UWP supporter for the ten years plus. Why on earth is this news? Does he want to give support to Dr Benjamin. ok. What do they want now? Are we suppose to cry over the loss of these two egomaniacs? Stupes. Absolutely no loss. Don’t turn back. No room in the inn. Griffin and Benjamin have their power agenda. All of a sudden, you all want to act like you care about people? This is just amazing. All the world ‘s a stage.

So Tim Tim was disgruntled that he was not made leader of UWP and Labor accepted him even if Tim Tim was labeled by the DLP and Tony the most corrupt minister. Now Tony is trying to destroy a disgruntled Laborite. But Tony there are many many Griffin St Hiliare, Dr Benjamine, Urban Baron, Recker, Corcky etc. But what should be more concerning to Tony are the disgruntled who are silent and the people too afraid to talk.

Hmmmm, reallyyyyy Astphan….so when again did Skerrit become the leader of DLP????? Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t that from 2003 or something……ok!!!! Didn’t we have two elections after that; 2005, 2009 both where Skerrit served as the leader of the party….soooooo why only now Mr St Hilaire is upset at not being the leader of the DLP….after some many years.

Dominicans would be dumb to believe you Astaphan

Come let us reason saith the Lord, though your sins may be Crimson I will make them white. The support of a political party is an individual choice and in a democracy people are free to support whichever political party they want especially when they believe the other side is not performing to their satisfaction. Let me say I do not support any political party and for that reason will support whoever wins the general election but beyond that all politicians generally goes into office with good intentions or what we may they have a calling to serve the people and when they win the elections the calling of the people evades them because they are preoccupied with other challenges and programmes that they believe is in the best interest of the country.
Both political parties are looking to win the next general election therefore they will present what they believe to be their best strategy to win and that strategy is to make their contender less qualified to serve. Let us put it that way, we have all sinned and come short of the glory therefore no one is perfect and we must exercise a certain degree of tolerance to the shortcomings of others because speech can be misguided and we all could be misinformed by some type of speech therefore those who take no side in the political race should be given consideration because that is a different level consciousness achieve to analyzing the problems that confront communities and nations in a non partiSan way.
The politics of today requires a different message, one that makes us united towards a common purpose as opposed to one that makes us showcase our dreams and crucify others who we need to work with but sometimes the damage is so painful that it is difficult to repair.

The last time so many members of the DLP either disassociated themselves with the party or endorsed another candidate was in 1979. If by now, Skeritt has not come to the realization that he will loose the general election, I don’t know what will convince him. The Douglas family has dominated everything political in Portsmouth for approximately fifty years and this is the first time they are going into an election divided and that is under Skeritt’s watch. If someone had said to me approximately fifteen months ago, I would make such a statement as, “should Skeritt win the election, this would become the biggest general election upset in Dominica’s history, ” I would deny it 100%.

We all know that Griffin challenged Skerrit for party leadership. He never took his eyes off the pie, so this is a desire and envy gone mad. Griffin has tried all avenues to hijack party leadership, even by his recent move to make his nephew the candidate of choice for the Labour Party in the Wesley Constituency…Sorry Griffin, but on December 8 your endorsement won’t mean a thing…Happy that you’ve shown your true colours at last.

    TO: GRIFFIN ST. HILAIRE
griffin you are talking about putting differences aside, it have to begin with you, its been years since we did not elect you as political leader at a delegate conference of the party in Grand Fond,
and since then you have this grudge against the prime minister you could not persuade the people of Wesley to vote for you as a mere candidate, is for prime minister they will elect you, come on lets face, is people who ask to make peace most times are the ones who incite war and that suits you, The anger in your tone of voice says it all but your next move to FIGHT Lennox Linton for the top position of their party its just a matter of time, time will tell soon and very soon.

Why are so many past DLP supporters endorsing the united worker party and still Dominican fail to read between the RED lines and see that the DLP under the leadership of Rosevelt Skerrit has refused to bring Dominica any development and kept Dominica in a primitive state despite the growth of the other Caribbean countries. It’s a shame to look at Dominica and Dominicans in the year 2014 still hopeless and jobless and turning to one man for bread and butter. What happen to days when Dominicans use to work and build their own homes, buy their own toilet to put in their home, when Dominicans would work and get paid and go to the Grocery to shop with their own hard earn money. Some of you refuse to want better for yourselves and development for Dominica. I stand and I look at Dominica and see her mourn under the burden of Rosevelt Skerrit praying and hoping that one day she will be liberated from her pain and her shame and embrace the success that her other Caribbean friends have been embracing for so long. POOR DOMINICA!!

Both Mr. Griffin St. Hilaire and Dr. Benjamin have exemplified what true independent thinkers are and should be. At this critical juncture, one must or should at least, consider putting political allegiances aside and vote for the best interest of the region and therefore of the country.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with one person being an adamant supporter of a political party and vote another at any given General Election. The DLP is hurting because of its own doing and it’s not taking head – and as I said in a previous commentary the writings are steadily being pasted on the wall. There are a lot more around like these gentlemen and an equal number of “undecided” who may very swing this election victory in favor of the UWP. I have been saying that from the inception that this election may very well depends on the “Independents” and “undecided”.

The cards are crumbling. With abated breath I am waiting to see who is next to jump ship. Captain the ship is sinking, captain the seas are rough, we are abandoning ship, we are not staying on it, captain you can’t tell me what to do. The UWP should use this as their team song, heaven have an election, vote out Skerrit .
