George “disturbed” by James’ remarks on airport renaming ceremony

Acting Prime Minister, Ambrose George, said he is “very much disturbed” by remarks made by MP for Marigot, Edison James, who said the location for the ceremony for the official renaming of the Melville Hall airport could be a disaster waiting to happen.

The ceremony is expected to take place on October 27 2014 at the airport’s car park and James had said choosing the area is “irresponsible, reckless and constitutes a serious danger to lives of persons” who will attend the ceremony.

James had argued that that a large crowd could compromise any emergency at the airport.

But speaking at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) for the upgrade of Roseau and Portsmouth on Thursday George described James’ statement as ‘unfortunate,’ saying he is bothered by it.

“The way that the member for Marigot described, unfortunately, the whole question of emergency and contingency plans, I was very much disturbed at those pronouncements,” George said.

According to him, when the government was commissioning the night landing at that same location, “there was a big crowd there and everything went smoothly.”

“The plane landed alright, everybody clapped and was ecstatic about the whole thing,” George stated. “I don’t see all of a sudden why we should expect some catastrophe at Melville Hall at this stage just for the renaming of the airport. So really and truly this is very disturbing.”

He added that James gave the impression that hosting the activity in that location “would end up with an aircraft falling from the sky.”

Recently prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, announced that the airport will be renamed the Douglas-Charles Airport in tribute to late prime ministers, Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles.

Why would a government who owes Public Works Corporation and as a result staff has not been paid almost three fort nights and two months salary spend in excess of $259,000 to just change the name of an airport? Why would Dominicans participate in such an event knowing all this information and not ask the government to do the right thing? Are we less caring about our fellowmen? I say anyone who knowingly gives his brother a stone who is hungry when he has the food he seeks has done a great wrong. I am of the belief that those who participate in this event are equally culpable. The food and music tomorrow God willing will not fill your stomach and the music will sound like the pain your brothers and sisters endure who are being treated unfairly. It may not seem important now because you have not been affected, but there will come a time when it will be at each of us doorstep who ignore the pain of their brothers and sisters. May God will be done in Dominica.

to me that is nonsense there’s the pierre Charles secondery school named after pierre Charles already. why name an airport after him again? there are so many people the airport can be named after for example the person who constructed it in the first place. if all you cannot see the simple logic In that just name the whole island after pierre Charles and done with that

I think the airport should be named after E.O. LeBlanc and that’s it. Since he was at the helm when we obtained independence, he should get credit and no one else.

When I become PM I will change the name again. Not for political reason but for practical commonsense reasons.

It is interesting that Skerritt names that Airport for his former colleagues of recent history PM Pierre Charles and Douglas these personages who have already been named by schools and a road Charles .
Is that a conscience issue for the PM who may wish to make amends to their families and supporters by the present PM Skerritt who during their time in office there were reports of infighting led by Skerriit who led a very early challenge to their leadership.?
QUITE HONESTLY I great have difficulty in understanding the importance given to the contribution by these honorable gentlemen in the history of Dominica to warrant these continuous accolades .PM Douglas was mostly missing in action in office during his tenure a case then made by Skerritt at the famous party meeting in STJOSEPH. He was traveling the globe and was not hands on as PM .
Indeed the only claim to perceived notion of governance seem to be the authority to build the FINANACIAL CENTER!!
Douglas was better known for his nefarious activity and other escapades before he came into government for the brief period he served and of course being a great orator!
A kind man better known internationally than any other PM whilst actively engaged with world events prior to being PM.
As an AGENT PROCATEUR he served as the man to curb agitation following the murder of Rodney in his appointed position BY PRESIDENT FORBES BURNHAM He was a front man in the IRA struggles in Ireland a promoter of armed warfare in LYBIA where he sent many Dominicans. including former officer now decease Johnson and others to be indoctrinated and trained in armed struggles —. a testimony given by TIM HECTOR of Antigua at his funeral .He was obviously an international personage who hobnobbed with the great personalities of the day as he was involved with the black movement in north AMERICA ..
which led to his jail sentence in Canada ! He was of concern to the French Government as a leader in the independente movement of Guadeloupe and Martinique .
These events were before his leadership of Dominica but which had no direct relationship to advancing the cause of the state and so he being a cause celebre is not based on activities whilst in office as PRIME Minister for a few months .
Pierre Charles was known to be timid and unsure a butt of the jokes of radio talk show hosts who now parade as labour supporters !He was subjected to intense internal pressure from Ministers of his Government including so it is told the present PM !
Indeed his only claim to fame outside of his moments of cultural activity and library work and youth work in GRANDBAY before his attainment to high office as MINISTER and PM was dealing with the FINANCIAL CRISIS of 2003!
Yet again this was handled by AMBASSADOR Swinburne Lestrade the economist and former CHIEF OF THE OECS given the man of the year award in 1973 ..The PM merely acted on advise !!!
as nation need to treat History with respect and mot for political conveniences ..rallying the trrops of alabour must mot take precedence of honest evaluation of our History
We now have a Savarin AS PRESIDENT foist upon the labour party in history a direct contradiction of the role he played to destroy Labour initially now we have heroes who are placed on generations to come devoid of merit as directed by PM SKERRRIT IN THIS GENERATION
We need now to examine the raison d,etre for the absence of commiseration and consideration for the other LEADERS who served this nation

One day Dominicans will see how senile the UWP and its leadership is and has been for some time too. They are pathetic and shameless, its not hard to tell that they just don’t mean well. I agree with mr James 100 percent. This thing we allow in dominica to pass as a government is not at all acceptable. Not even in Zimbabwe and other countries alike that a government “one man” can just get up one morning and do and say such ridiculous things to the citizenry of a country.
Unless this “one man” can’t come and tell the people
1.for how long was this renaming of this air strip was in the pipeline
2.did/was any FAA personal informed ;with details ok and permission was granted for such event
3.how much is the exaxt bill for such an event on the backs of the tax payers
4.finally were monies for such event given in advance to certain ministers and party “harcks”? How much? And will these funds be ever accounted for properly in the interest of transparency?
I know I will not get a positive answer and if I do get den I can bet it will be a maypwee but as a concerned and responsible dominican I must ask ok

I was referring to, Mr. James saying that people would be trapped between the Air Port fence and the river and the Pagua area would be a disaster for the people going through the area, I was asking Mr. James what were their plans, whether they were planning to place buggy traps in the area. I was only asking a question

Mr.James is right since after 9/11 security and safety standards are key elements at Port of entry.

Not because it went smooth the first time makes it wise to do it again, airports are not entertainment avenues.

A brief and small gathering is what is key, larges crowds posse more work for security personel.

but it’s dominica they aren’t known to be a wise minded

this facility leaks when it rains the layout is a first class in low standards when it comes to space and airport design

that’s a poor reflection on esp Roise who was a man of International appeal, it’s a slap in the face renaming a basic tiny low ended concrete shed for these former PM’s

but again it’s dominica they are not know for shooting high, they are comfortable with nonsense…the “is so it is”

that’s why they are rated the poorest in the eastern caribbean block, and according the the Wikileaks info from the US Embassy in Barbados to the US State Dept in WAS

Dominica’s Prime Minister is out of depth with his fellow PM’s in the Caribbean….

Didn’t Ralph from Vincy tell him and Dominicans they don’t need a international airport, but Vincy’s international airport Argle will be opened soon..

    Dominica the FOOLS PARADISE!!

Why should we even care if Mr. Ambrose George is disturbed by Edison James’ comments? As far as I’m concerned, Mr. George and the DLP should take heed of what deceased Rosie’s sons and family are saying. They are not happy with the disrespectfulness the Labor party have displayed and continue to demonstrate towards the true Laborites. Every authentic Laborites know very well that the renaming of the airport is a sham and another vote attracting scheme.

At the end of it all, the monies spent on such sham can help pay for a wage increase for all civil servants. But knowing the cult type mentality of the DLP supporters, they aren’t capable of seeing the wrongs of the government, even when it’s against their interests. Help us oh God to see the truth and the light before it gets worst.

It is interesting that Skrerritt name that Airport for his former colleagues PM Charles and Douglas who already have SCHOOLS NAMED AND A ROAD AT GRANDBAY named after CHARLES as well
Is that a conscience issue that Skerritt had himself issues to replace both these Leaders and now wishes to make amends to their families ???!!!
Quite honestly I have difficulty in understanding the importance of these men in the history of Dominica for these extraordinary naming of them ,
Douglas was mostly absent as A PM during his short stay in Government travelling the globe whilst even Skerritt tried to replace him for his extensive no show as an active Prime MINISTER IN THE MONTHS HE SERVED ..Douglas was known more for his escapades before his short stay in Government. His experience before government as being AGENT PROVACATEUR FOR GUYANA,S PRESIDENT BURNHAM as well as a promoter for GUADDAFI AND SENT MEN TO TRAIN AS MILITANTS in LYBIA .He was also involved with the IRISH struggles etc
His only claim to fame rests on activities before his leadership of DOMINICA .
Charles was known to be timid and unsure attacked by radio hosts constantly and Skerritt was not known to support …indeed the claim to fame in his short service was
the financial CRISIS IN 2003 which is known to have been really masterminded by LESTRADE WHO WAS NAMED MAN OF THE YEAR in that regard .
Person close to Charles saw felt to be overwhelmed by his responsibilities which may have contributed to his early death
Many of his MINSITERS were on the verge of turning the table on him then .

Seem it is an attempts to really the troops for COMING ELECTIONS
ist is imterestnamesnamed on the west coasat road ing Leb,kanc was
We need to really give all jacks their jackts ,FRANK BARON our first premier too served and gove early self help housing ti the north of hgoodwill etc
Patrick John who excelled im sports a DOMINCAN FOOTNBLL PALYER FOUNDER OF WAWU a past MAYOR OF Roseau ..A promoter of PIATIAN an ananual carnival bnad calypso writer …Founder member of a popilar sportsclub with THOMAS BAPTISTE ,. A log serving PRESIDENT OF THE DOMINCA FOOTBALL Associaition and an exexcitive memeber of the Caribbean footabll associaition .A LEADER of the labour party for years also as SECRETARY OF THE PARTY along serving Minister and our PRIME NINISTER who led to this country to INDEPENDENCE .
Yes he took prison as he was charged as a political prisoner who sought to overthrow a government as reatalalation for his own overthrow but so did ROSIE DOUGLASwho too was a aprisoner in CNAANDA

But Ambrose since you voiced your concern while speaking at the signing ceremony of the (MOU) for the upgrade of Roseau and Portsmouth, then since Rosie Douglas was from Portsmouth and his son Tiani is also from Portsmouth, why didn’t you use that opportunity to address statements made by Tiani Behanzin, on his weekly Law on Q program, when he made his feelings known about the renaming of the Melville Hall airport? Isn’t that very disturbing to you sir? I cannot believe that neither yourself, nor the PM, nor the spin doctors of the DLP have said a thing about those remarks. Come on Ambrose and the DLP, Please clear the air on those disturbing remarks of Tiani Behanzin. DNO, I am also surprised that you never posted his remarks especially because he is the son of Rosie Douglas, after whose name the airport will be named.

The things that people say and do for political advancement. I am sure that Edison is playing his own political game too however his concerns is legitimate as well.
Safety is paramount and there is nothing should be ignored. In any other country or even in the professional setting Ambrose would be dismissed for making such outrageous statements regarding safety. “It not like a an going to fall from the Sky”. I am sure that anyone who truly understand the emphasis and preparation that goes into safety occupation will regard Ambrose’s response as irresponsible and reckless.
From what I heard Edison saying I too agree with the safety concerns expressed. Theread is a one way in one way out situation at the airport and that is a serious obstacle to emergency management even when on an ordinary day.
The things we take for granted I Dominica makes me wince sometimes. I don’t know of the circumstances following the death of the man from vehicles but I know that he fell from the roof. When I first read the story immediately I wondered whether the gentleman or the contractor had taken all the necessary safety measures or fall protection measures. I sympathize with gentleman family however we must ask the life saving questions and we must begin to take safety matters seriously. We cannot politicize safety.
So Ambrose a plane may not fall from the sky but someone on the compound may end up needing urgent medical attention. What if there is a fire? What if there is a stampede? What if there is a sick passenger coming in on a flight. What if a passenger is suspected of suffering from the Ebola virus and has to be idolated?

    Leaders must be more responsible.

  34. Way D Bank Ambrose?

Until Ambrose George truthfully answers the following questions, he should have no business in our parliament, let alone to act as PM. WE need him to tell us: 1. Why he was fired by late PM Pierre Charles? 2. Since he is now acting as PM for Skerrit, he needs to tell us why he was fired by that same Roosevelt Skerrit? 3. We need him to give us the correct address of the bank he was looking for, since that bank could not be found.

As a former supporter and part of the inner circle of the DLP during the reign of both late PM’s Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles, my good friend Ambrose George, should be very disturbed by statements made by son of the late Rosie Douglas, on his weekly Law on Q program Monday concerning the renaming of the Melville Hall airport. I mean Tiyani Behanzin, the son of Rosie Douglas, did not leave any stones unturned concerning Skerrit’s relationship with his father and the fact that Rosie the MOU signed between his dad and China was for an international airport, and , it is more ridiculous an act, to attach Rosie’s name to that building, when Rosie was well aware that the building would become obsolete”. That to me was very disturbing and to my surprise and amazement, no one in the DLP has responded or said a thing about Tiani’s remarks.

In my opinion that statement of Edison is a threat to nation security and should be taken very seriously, Don’t forget that was the same Man who declared a state of emergency in Mahaut for a little by election in 95. Blocked the pagua road in 2005 general and put over 20,000 people at risk during the Labour Party motorcade, the same man that instructed to hold Hubert Sabroche at Gun point in the parliament. now he is talking of a catastrophe, and plane falling down into the crowd and where will be the escape route or exit, those statements should not be taken lightly I believe he should be arrested and put away so he can’t implement his evil plan against innocent Dominicans who will be gathered at the Airport in very large numbers, on Monday. Or maybe he trying a stunt and when police arrest him the evil I S style Team Destruction will move in and make an overthrow of the Government because they so hungry for power. Dominicans be careful with those words of Edison.

Anybody in Dominica who would allow a character like you to influence them would have to be out of their mind, they would deserve to be incarcerated in a mental asylum, by now everybody knows your reputation, you have now become the Fox guarding the hen house; you know the chicken coop. You are wasting your time, the influence you might have in the past is long gone, mixed with the labor garbage on the garbage heap of history!

The only reason the people in your constituency voted for you over, and over, is because the vote they cast was not for you but they wanted Skerrit, and anything Skerrit told them to accept, they bowed to his request; as such they gave you their vote. It is all over for you and Skerrit, so there is nothing more for you say; you and Skerrit, and your cabal has all become redundant, and irrelevant, it is time for you people to evaporate into oblivion, we are tired of seeing your faces!
