Government will not act irresponsibly – AG warns UWP

AG Royer

Dominica’s Attorney General Francine Baron-Royer is refuting claims that the Roosevelt Skerrit government is avoiding the introduction of voter ID cards.

The United Workers Party (UWP) has given indications that they will boycott Parliament because of the absence of the introduction of voter ID cards, along with other issues.

Baron-Royer told Parliament last night during the budget debate that all possible implications will be examined before voter ID cards could be implemented.

The UWP is well aware that last year Government indicated its general support to the introduction of Voter ID Cards. The government however indicated that there were far reaching implications which had to be sufficiently considered. This included whether it would be more appropriate to have a national identification system rather than just a voter identification card, and consideration needed to be given whether this new system would result in voter being disenfranchised,” she said.

She said it is untrue to state that the governments do not want to introduce voter ID cards.

“This government will not act irresponsibly. It will not act without considering all possible implications. It will act once a way forward has been agreed upon after examining all possible implications,” she added.

The attorney general says if the UWP were serious about the matter, they would participate in Parliament.

Another reason for the opposition to boycott.
Dominicans I think it’s our turn now, to put those “BASTARDS” out. Enough is enough.
They were not elected just to boycott.

I voted for the red rasses so I should have a say too.

Instead of spending 27 MILLION on the government thouse, spend it on electoral reform.

The idea of a voter id card is an EXCELLENT IDEA!!! hats off to the Opposition Party for the idea.

The idea of a national id is also a good idea, hats off to whomever suggested it (canna remember at this time).

I like the idea of a National Id card because believe it or not, people who are not employed do not have a Social Security card. And there are MANY D/cans who have never made a passport!!

Now you need two id’s for certain transaction at the banks, especially NBD and you also need two id’s for other business places. On a daily basis I am faced with customers who only have SS card, or only passport or none! We have resorted to having them provide a Police Record to identity themselves.

If the National Id is made a reality it could serve many purposes; voting, identification for travel and for other business transactions. In our sister island St. Lucia, they have a NIS (National Identification System) card which is used for voting as well as for identification.

We could have a good debate on this topic and see how swiftly it could be implemented….

Doing things intelligently is always best. Having voters ID is the best thing dominica can institute. It will be for the benefit of all parties. When decisions are made by the public everyone will be happy. The advantages:There will be no need for wasteful by elections money. This will also put an end to the time consuming in name calling.

@DES: true democracy lies with the people not parliament. when Patrick John was ousted was it through the actions of parliament or through the people. emancipate yourself from mental slavery where we put politicians in charge of us and then act like we have no control over the democratic process.

Why do you think she is? I can help. The father and daughter sometime ago were in the news together. One day the father spoke on radio and wrote in the news paper.Next day the daughter was on radio.I was awiting word from the mother and the brother too.
DFP transplanted to infiltrated DLP .It’s like 10 yrs now a pal of mine from the north keep insisiting that the DFP has metamorphorsied to the new DLP.He clarified it sucessfully by stating the following.Charles Saverin, Charles Maynard, Skerrit former young DFP president, Hubert charles now Ambassador in D.C post DSC, most of the PS’s were former right hand henge persons to Mamo. Look at the former Black power advocate early in the 70’s ( made a 180 degree turn) joined and became Mamo’s confidante retired only to re-emerge as honory consul to Findland.-I guess weeds don’t die plants do. Now back to the current AG and your discription of her. Simple it’s striaght fom the DFP coocoon. Birds of a feather flock together. Meme bete meme puole.

    @ PIE

Since “discovery” Dominica has been administered by colonial Governments {hence colonial AG’s), from Spain, England and France. They slaughtered thousands of Caribs. They institutionalized slavery. They raped our women and plundered our resources. Are you honestly saying that this AG is worse than these colonial thugs? I’ve heard that argument before: Obama = Hitler.

Never seen such a cack-handed attempt to claw back the initiative. Splitting hairs about whether it should be a voter i.d. or a national i.d. For voting purposes either would be acceptable. The possible implications were studied some time ago when the idea was rejected on the grounds of “costs”. To try and claim the moral high ground now is a bit rich.

Have the people of Dominica had a referundum, to vote about the need for ID’s . Did the people of Dominca vote and ask for ID’s. Have the people of Dominica decided that they want ID cards. There are implications or having ID’s.
Are we willing to give up our civil rights of privacy are we wanting to make it easier for a fascist government or racist government in the future, to throw us in jail because we are not travelling with our ID cards on us.
Have we discussed the raminifications of having ID cards. Do we understand the implications involve with ID card.
After the people of Dominica have engaged in debate and taken a vote by form of a referundum, then and only then can a law be passed for ID in Dominica.
Just see what is happenning in Arizona now, and those of you who are too young read the history of Hitlers germany and ID cards.
Because America have ID,s does not mean Dominicans showed give up our fought for freedoms, to be under big brother. ID cards could be an invasion of privacy and giving too much government control on peoples personal lives.

Madam AG you talking a whole lot of rubbish. In this enlightened age when information is so well available, you expect Dominicans to take what you are saying to the bank? Look at other OECS states electoral reform compared to Dominicas? Please Madam AG, do not insult the intelligence of Dominicans. Our young people are looking at your conduct and that of the members of the DLP, history will not absolve you!

Dominicans awake from your slumber before it is too late!

Dominica will be a better country if it ammends its constitution to have its AG elected by the people, for the people and for the good of the country. AG Francine Barron-Royer is just another stooge of the PM and the DLP. She has zero credibility in the eyes of the people and is a disgrace to her nation. May the good Lord enlightens her path so that she can uphold the constitution.

The constitution is the highest law of any nation, what does the constitution of Dominica states about an eligible voter. I have been out of Dominica for over twenty years, yet my name still show on the voters list. If you have a voters ID, people like me who live outside the country for a considerable long time will not be able to come and vote at the drop of a hat. Madam AG, can you educate the citizens of Dominia about the electorial process of our beloved Dominica

    @Democratic lover:

if you ever travel out of Dominica the social security card is not accepted as a form of ID in some countries.I believe that the country needs a national ID card.
St.Kitts and Nevis whose population is less or maybe the same as Dominica has a national ID card so the point of the population does not hold much weight. To obtain a social security card if my memory serves me right a payment of XCD 10 is to be paid so if the same fee is charged the card would pay for themselves.

I always divide Dominican politicians into two groups. Those who live by what they know to be a lie, and those who live by what they believe, falsely, to be the truth. We just cannot win with these people. You just have try to pick the bad from the worse.
