Graneau outlines plans if reelected

Graneau want to place emphasis on economics if re-elected
Graneau want to place emphasis on economics if re-elected

Parliamentary Representative for the Kalinago Territory, Ashton Graneau, has outlined to GIS News his plan for the area if he is given a second term.

Graneau explained that his first term was used to directly improve access and living standards in his constituency, noting that his term also saw a record number of College and University students from the Kalinago Territory.

If given a second term by the people he serves, Graneau said his emphasis would be on economics.

The Minister has a very specific plan for putting money in the pockets of Dominica’s Kalinago people beginning with the Farine Processing Plant.

“We can encourage all of our farmers to grow Manyok and believe me, banana has never been a dollar a pound, neither plantain, cassava now is 80 cents a pound and sometimes when it is scarce it can be sold at a dollar a pound,” he said. “So you can well imagine five years from now, Cassava can be sold at $1.25 a pound. Cassava is a heavy crop, a bag of Cassava weighs more than one hundred pounds, so from one bag you can make over one hundred and twenty dollars. So this is one [direction] we will [focus] on. We should be able to get a small programme to assist the [farmers] to produce Manyok.”

Still in Agriculture, Graneau sees the need for emphasis on short term crops in the constituency.

“I would love to concentrate on short term crops because that’s where the money is. The long term crops are coming. We have cocoa and coffee, which Government is pushing for rehabilitation with the coffee plant coming [into effect] and so many of our farmers will get into coffee. In the meantime, we could be producing other things, dasheen, peppers and ginger and these are some of the short term crops that we are concentrating on,” he noted. “We’ve already engaged the director of Agriculture to concentrate on the production of short term crops.”

The mass production of poultry and pork via the national abattoir is also being seen as a viable means of improving the financial status of constituents, according to Graneau.

Outside of Agriculture, the Minister says his constituents are business-minded and only require help in developing their businesses.

Graneau is suggesting variety in the sector stating that too many people want to have bars and small shops. “There are other areas that we need to concentrate on. We will be looking at the new ideas that we have so that our people can invest in and earn from it,” he noted.

The Kalinago MP was speaking to GIS News on a recent tour of ongoing developments in his constituency

Mr. Graneau, your second paragraph clearly tells us why Dominica is in the mess that your DLP government put it in.
“Graneau explained that his first (should be seen as third term) term was used to directly improve access and living standards in his constituency.”

So Mr. Graneau, you are now publicly admitting that your government’s housing program / Red clinic failed. Maybe you and your government should have started with economic development because that would put the Kalinago people and Dominicans in a position to improve living standards because they would have the money to build their dream house which would create employment for masons, carpenters and helpers. So you are now acknowledging that the plan failed! Again, if you want a person to depend on you, give him fish. However, if you want him to become independent, give him a fishing line and let him go look for fish. When he is given fish, he never has enough to spare his friend; when he is given a line most likely he will catch enough to sell to his enemy.

My dear friends is this not the very Graneau who made it abundantly clear that he was not seeking reelection? Dem fellas are a bunch of clueless politicians that Roosevelt Skerrit keep stringing along. How long? not long….

Recently a police officer who is closely aligned to the government intimated to me that the Graneau brothers are simply a waste of time. He went further to insert that Sanford is the best suited representative for Kalinago Country so we wait patiently for this very important change!

Hear Mr. Graneau’s vision for economic development if given a second term: The Minister has a very specific plan for putting money in the pockets of Dominica’s Kalinago people beginning with the Farine Processing Plant.

Mr. Graneau, Manyok is not only grown in the territory and there is no law that prevents Dominicans to grow Manyok in other parts of the country. Do you think if there is a livelihood in farine Dominicans all over will plant Manyok too just like they planted bananas? So before you start to talk planting Manyok, why don’t you ensure there is a market for farine and cassava especially abroad? But listen to how he ends it nou boy: ” We should be able to get a small programme to assist the [farmers] to produce Manyok.” He is not even sure he can get a program to assist them after 14 yrs in cabinet. Can you believe this! He reminds me of when I was a Laborite and Hon. Matthew Walter once told an audience that he has a vision for Dominica if the DLP wins the 2000 elections. here is the vision folks: I can see how we can raise Manicoos, Agooties and mountain chickens and kill them, smoke them, bag them and export to countries like the US, USVI, London etc. Well guess what? They won the elections and have been in power since but the only thing they have smoked is the economy.

    February 6, 2014

Kalinago people, Mr. Graneau just confirmed that after 14 long years of Graneau /Skerrit / DLP administration they HAVE FAILED to bring economic development to you and Dominica, and I sincerely thank him for his honesty. Listen to what he said: “If given a second term (he meant 4th term), by the people he serves, Graneau said his emphasis would be on economics.” In other word he is admitting that he and his government failed you for 14 yrs. That’s why change is a MUST and NOT an option!

  25. expired cabinet pill
    February 6, 2014

Mr. Graneau, you just confirmed to the public that we have an bunch of expired pill in the cabinet and we cannot wait to trash them out. First of all, is this the first term of the government? If memory serves me right your government has been in power for 14yrs, although the hardship they have brought on us makes it feel like 40 yrs. To tell the people that it is your first term is just pure joke because between you, your brother Kelly, along with Skerrit and the DLP, you are in your 3 term and you are asking for a forth term?
Mr. Graneau, when you tell the people that in your first 3 terms dating back to 2000, you could not concentrate on economic development and therefore you need a forth term (20 yrs0 to come with a plan that makes no sense, can you not see that indirectly you are telling the people the you, your brother Kelly, Skerrit and the DLP have failed the Kalinago people as well as Dominica on a whole? Man you are and your pill in the cabinet expired long time ago in Bethlehem.

After four-teen years, they now have a specific plan for putting money in the pockets of the Kalinago people.

Sounds like the parl. rep from Grand Bay, Justina Charles, except she’s asking for a second term to secure her pension. So here you got it. One wants to put money in his people’s pocket, and the other wants it for her pockets. Amazing eh!

These ministers are incredulous and disconnected with their constituents. Are they for real?

Our history is a sad story. From who we were as a regional nation, to being confined to a reservation with a leadership controlled by government,is indeed the saddest story in Dominica. However, what deepens the sadness of this story is the willingness of government appointed representatives (Our Own Blood) who has lost their value in heritage and exchange their future for insignificant monetary resources. Our Leaders in the last decade has not only sat and watch the demise of their own, but took part (with silence)as Carib Reserve has been the Cash Cow of the Government and “chosen ones”. (They have used our indigenous name to finance their pleasures and educate their kids while our kids are laughed at every time we walk the stairs of ministry seeking educational assistance.Their has never been a sadder moment in our history. The Key of success does not lie on the Government of Dominica. This election should not be about politics (we have heard every possible promise over the last 20 years) this election should be about survival.

Is this man serious? Now you want to talk about improving the lives of the Kalinago people? You’ve been there now, how many years? Your party has been in this position now, how many years? Now that you see the writing on the wall, you singing a different tune? Piece of advice – save it! Keep that talk for the rest of that bloated cabinet who will soon be on the unemployment line, you know, the same unemployment line you people never paid any attention to for the past 14 years; you’ll soon be joining them.

Another thing – learn basic economics and product costing. If you sell a 100-LB bag of casava flour at $1.25/LB for $125.00, you didn’t MAKE $125.00, so stop fooling people. There were costs involved; raw material, growing, production, manufacture, transport, salaries, commissions – that’s all included in the $1.25/LB selling price. Go back to school. Or better yet, resign and allow a bright Kalinago progressive individual take your place and do the math for you.

The expectation of cassava being $1.25 per pound in a few years is misplaced. A simple understanding to the basic economic supply and demand model tells what happens to price when supply grows. As supply grows, price falls. So when the rush to plant cassava materializes, the price then may not be able to reward the farmer’s efforts. I do agree more emphasis needs to be placed on economic incentives to stimulate Carib Territory growth. However, that growth will not come unless some for of real property ownership is given to Caribs who can then leverage the land to better themselves. Until then, the Caribs will remained tied to a system that has them land rich, but cash poor. May its time to dismantle the Carib Reserve, or give them complete autonomy to govern themselves, and to enter into business arrangements with business entities, local and foreign, and with other governments and aid organizations.

Congratulations, Ashton. I hope you win a second term. I think you are on the right path. People think that bars with alcohol and cigarettes are what is needed, but sugar, soap and all the basic necessities that their children need is lacking. Children start drinking and smoking at young ages because that is what they are surrounded with. Mostly men say, after a hard day’s work they are going to kill the rum, little do they realize, the rum is killing them, slowly. I think after a hard day’s work parents should sit at the table and enjoy a good healthy meal with their children, and not leave them hungry to go and get drunk. Well, enough said. Ashton, GO FOR IT.

Your government sir ignored agriculture in an agriculture country for 14 years. You guys should not be forgiven for such an atrocity.

Your government sir has destroyed a whole generation of farmers. I am not even sure that the UWP team much less you lame duck government ministers even fully understand the enormity of the task of restoring agriculture when the human resource is simply not going to be readily available and adequate to muscle the industry back to prominence and economic sustainability. The restoration of the agriculture industry is not a 1 , 2 punch it is going to take years to rebuild 14 years of destruction.

Now it is interesting that after 14 years of the Labor Party people attacking anyone who publically resented the neglect of the farmers and agriculture and all of a sudden they want to start talking about agriculture. Where was the action of Ambrose George a trained agriculturist? Instead of showing leadership and maturity the government officials chose to isolate the farmers who find themselves on Q95 preaching agriculture and their politics. My god why not go for the good and sift out the bad /politics – that is what mature and responsible politicians do. They embrace the good ideas irrespective of people’s political inclination. Mature politicians would embrace the expertise of someone like Edison James all in the interest of the country but noooo their arrogance, selfish and corrupt ways would not allow them to put the country first.

DNO sorry I am very passionate about agriculture cause I know the kind of value that agriculture has brought to Dominica prior to this administration however I am also very angry for the disdain shown to the farmers by this Labor Party administration. 14 years !!! Totally unacceptable and they must go.

Dominica News Online – Wednesday, September 11th, 2013 at 12:20 PM

Your first term? Man you party has blamed you for the DLP failure and wanted to replace you. Also, your brother Kelly who served for 2 terms was seen as the failure and was replaced by you. Parliamentary representative for the Salybia Constituency, Ashton Graneau, has hinted that he may not be seeking re-election when the next general election is called.

“The truth is I am seriously considering not seeking re-election,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

When questioned on his achievements and why he should earn a second term in office, Graneau said the question hinges on the assumption that he will be seeking re-election.

“Your question hinges on that I will be seeking re-election if I were to,” he stressed, “I think based on what we’ve been able to do, some of the projects that we have ongoing that needed to complete … that were done during my time.”

He stated that there are a “few new things” that were done during his tenure, “and those, I would be able to sell out.”

He spoke of ongoing projects that need to be completed and concluded that the people should be the judge of his performance.

“ I wouldn’t want to break the news so to speak, but as you know election is due in the next year or so, nine months from now, constitutionally, so in the event that I were to seek reelection, I think I would allow the people to judge me and judge my performance,” he stated.

Ashton Graneau is the brother of former Salybia MP, Kelly Graneau. He has served only one term so far and is Minister for Carib Affairs.

The Salybia constituency consists of the Kalinago Territory, Atkinson and Antrizle.
