I am not interested in gutter politics – Joshua Francis

Joshua Francis says gutter politics is of no interest to him

Local attorney and United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the Roseau South Constituency, Joshua Francis, has stated that he is not interested in what he described as ‘gutter politics.’

He was responding to prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, who targeted UWP candidates, including Francis, on a local radio station saying that they are unemployed, loiterers and wasters of time.

According to Skerrit, Francis “cannot get one legal job besides a bottle of rum somebody steal in a shop and he has to go and bail them.”

But Francis told Dominica News Online on Friday that he is not interested in ‘gutter politics.’

“I am above this fray,” he said. “What I am interested in is to elevate politics to a point where people can benefit from my submission. I am part of a team, Team Dominica, which is involved in a new political dispensation, a team which talks about issues, not a team to character assassinate, not a team to look for non issues but but a team to elevate Dominicans, to make the populace more sound in their reasoning.”

He said from a personal perspective, such politics is just not attractive and he even wished the prime minister well. “I ask Dominica to pray for him, pray for the Labour Party so that they can understand they are on a mission to elevate people’s lives not to break down people,” he noted. “I hope he comes to the realization that he has a responsibility to lead people to a better place and as a prime minister it was an indictment on him for him to make those types of comments.”

Francis pointed out that he can get a job as an economist but has been practicing law and has been doing well. “I have had absolutely no difficulties in paying my bills,” he said.

He noted that he loves helping people and that is what his practice is all about. “I have never had anybody walking into my office and walking out without legal representation and it is my pleasure to help my barefoot brother or sister,” he said. “So to say is only rum shop people that I am representing, I think the prime minister made a mistake.”

The attorney said he doesn’t have to be involved in politics but he chose to do so because, “I believe Dominica can be better.”

Francis also pointed out that Dominicans should recognize the passing away of legendary South African leader, Nelson Mandela, noting that his life should be a testament for what Dominica should stand for as a nation.  “And that is integrity, honesty, resilience, patience and long suffering in the interest for what is right and above all, service to country, putting country first,” he said. “I think every young person should aspire to have those qualities and in the next general elections, these are the types of things that we must aspire to look for in our political leaders.”

Francis expressed condolences on the behalf of his family and the people of the Roseau South Constituency to those mourning the death of Mandela.

all i have to say to you mr francis is that you are the new kid on the block for now. you seem like the candidate who believes he is the one that can change the way things are.change the political game. however my brother be very careful for politics has a way of changing people.how it is from looking on the outside is far different than what it really is on the inside.some people will do anything to win or to stay ahead in the game and in the process loose themselves.be very careful of the things you say and the things that you do.Be true to yourself and to your God. All the best to you.

Judging by the remarks of a so called future minister of the people, I would like to say this is not someone that I would want to lead me any where let alone the country.
You are so desrespectful how can one dismiss a prime minister’s comments like you did, and the sad thing about it is the people of Dominica is wasllering in your nonesense, would not be happy to be led by your party no way.

Those of us who have seen the movie Mission Impossible would see a recorded tape being destroyed as soon as the last words are said. I cannot help believing that Skeritt is like the tape, the guy gets into a mode of self destruction whenever he opens his mouth. Why cant he, as Prime Minister, just shut up and allow his red jokers to defend him and save Dominicans the embarrassment.

Skerrit boy, you could have been a great leader but time has shown your true intentions and it’s evident that you are not concerned about the Dominican people…you may be able to fool the one’s who are blinded by party colour but to the wise, you are nothing but a fraud…in a sense I understand why you are going to such degrading levels and why you are so desperate because God knows if you lose power you will become a mad man. smh

I hope that AMBROSE rise up in arms against Skerrit, for making this statement about Joshua Francis, because the effect of this imbecile piece of Rum Shop Crap is to UNDERMINE AMBROSE as Parl Rep in the Roseau South Constituency, a seat he would still lose even if this puerile statement was not made. However if AMBROSE was alreasdy weak, THE PM HAD NO RIGHT TO FURTHER WEAKEN HIS POSITION.
COME ON! RISE UP AMBROSE! You know for a fact that it’s young Labourites that the man is giving pro bono representation to.

I think that was uncalled for by the PM. I do like our PM but sometimes he stoop to the lowest lows with some of his statements. This was embarrasing and uncalled for. He must recorgnize that even Mr.Francis is part of a different party, he is also Dominican and he Mr.Skeritt is also Mr.Francis PM and should not insult/embarass thim that way. It’s his duty to see that Dominicans are not unemployed and for him to use that unemployment thing to degrade or insult people is really stooping too low and I think the PM should at least take that statement back. If anything I think the PM is hurting himself when he makes those type of statements.

Skerrit is just blatantly brazen and disrespectful with not the least bit tact and discipline. Even though UWP candidates are your opponents how can you refer to people as loiterers and wasters of time? No respect whatsoever. This man is distasteful and people tolerate and ‘exalt’ his piggish and disrespectful ways? Obama ran for election and regardless of his disagreement with their opinions he never once spoke ill of them or disrespected them. Us as Dominicans just do not know what qualities to look for in a leader. This man can NEVER get my vote. Gutter politics is correct Mr.Francis. Skerrit will do as he pleases because he has already sold D/ca to Chinese. Gosh! I am just besides my self. Avoid public display of personal animosity Skerrit. The Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit should take a look at the word honorable in the Dictionary. The prime minister has become very prideful and pride goes before a fall. I pray that God will tear down that spirit of pride that has taken up residence in the PM” chair and I pray that God will expose all corruption that is going on in this country. I pray that arrogance will crumble and fall to the ground. One must never forget where they came from. Being in leadership in a country for 20 years does not qualify you to use derogative words against those who are now in the position where you once were. You were once a first time politician. So why are you now putting down those who are in for the first time saying they have no experience in politics. If our memory serves us right as Dominicans you and your cabinet were once newcomers to politics. So Mr PM and your cabinet a word to the wise “never despise small beginnings.”

The Prime Ministers statement is sad because it expresses his lack of knowledge of the legal profession. Young attorneys like myself should be concerned. The worst part about this statement is that it will fuel the ignorance of those who chose to believe and those who do not understand how the legal profession works. Perhaps the Prime minister could contact one of his legal luminaries to assist him in understanding the role of an attorney. Every beginning attorney knows that the rum shop man and the man on the street with no money are the ones that will look up to us with confidence and give us a chance to perform. An individual who is truly interested in harnessing his craft as an attorney does not shun or look down on the rum shop man. Not every attorney will get the banks, all the government contracts and get rich in 5 minutes. I am happy with Joshua’s response and I will join him in his prayers.

The issue with the UWP is that they think they know it all and all others are idiots. If you don’t go the UWP way you are called all types of names. The moto of this party should be,..do as I say not as I do. Many of us forget too quickly, not too long ago Mr. Skeritt and Mr. St Jean were taken to court by the UWP in an attempt to have them removed from office due to the fact that they aquired French citizenship from their parents and allegedly had in their possession French passports. The UWP took this action against Skeritt and St Jean with the full knowledge that Mr. Ron Green who was the elected representative for Laplaine constituency for several was a US citizen and the holder of a US passport.
The Honorable Edison James stated in court that he knew Mr. Green was a US citizen but he considered him a Dominican. Mr. Green under oath confirmed he was a US citizen when he contested the election. Yet this very party spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to remove Skeritt and St. Jean from office for something they themselves were also doing. It is truly mind bogling to understand this. Skeritt and St Jean were called liars and Ron Green hailed a hero.
So I am not suprised at the reaction of the UWP and it’s supporters who believe that only they have a right to throw mud and assasinate peoples character. When they get a taste of their owm medicine, they cry fowl and try to scamper to higher ground, but too late they already smell of the politics of gutter and character assination. The hundreds of thousands of dollars spent to prosecute Skeritt and St Jean could well go to help the poor and needy of this country.

Most supporters of Pm are not in agreement with such statement. It was meant at getting at the opposition yes but many other Dominican blue or red were embarrassed by the statement. Lets encourage young lawyers who took loans or got scholarship to study and returned to make some kind of contribution. Although politics is politics but lack of wisdom can really mess things up. I believe the statement is hurtful. Lets us tackle each other but in a manner that will not hurt the rest of us that are not really involved in this real day to day political battle. PM try to focus more on the positive. Mr Francis, you acting wisely in your response and that will draw many people towards you Sir. PM try to keep the focus on what you have done for the country and your bigger vision and plan for the country. You are doing well but please watch it. You can also turn people away by what you say. Intelligence is not wisdom. I wish both gentlemen well and you are both great men in your own rights
    Love and respect

This is the lowest any political leader let alone a Prime Minister in any civilized society could stoop. Roosevelt Medad Skerrit, that was disgraceful and distasteful. You are as thin skinned and as insultive as they come. You come across as one who was ill bred and ill disciplined. I swear that you were DRAGGED UP instead of being brought up or raised.

The guys have every right in a democracy to seek to represent their people. This country was not willed to you neither is a part of your mother’s garden (patois please). You have lost it and need to be checked. Every time you speak badly of other sons and daughters in this manner it shows how power hungry, greedy and disrespectful you are.

I also think that you have an obsession with rum or rum shop as much as you are obsessed with power.

Roosevelt Skerrit the good Lord has already rejected you as king and with the passage of time it will become crystal clear to you and the populace just how much you have failed as the leader of this government.

I was one of those who favored you over Griffin St. Hilaire for leader and boy have I lived to regret it.

I will tell you this much, if Team Blue is a group of unemployed people, from the day we go to the polls, their status will go from unemployed to gainfully employed. Skerrit boy you are a big disgrace so i will say to you in your own famous word GO TO HELL.

what hurts me more as a laborite about the pm statement is that Mr. James Alexander is a retired school principal , who can be the pm father, could have gotten an opportunity to teach the pm during his teaching carrier and finally this retired man is creating employment in Grand Bay. i mean come on man , justina Charles can confess to that. i know that Pierre Charles would condemn such a statement.what a sad day in our history. skerrit will cause some loborite to just abstain from voting and it will be to the peril of his party.so no wonder some children talking to their parents any how.

No, it is not ok, but Skerrit is the leader of the Nation, so he must be held to a higher level of accountability. I am truly disgusted at his comments towards a hard working Dominican whose only crime is a desire to dedicate himself to serving his country. The Prime Minister has to show respect for his fellow countrymen/women, regardless of their political affiliations. Skerrit is a disgrace and ought not to be anywhere near the mantle of leadership. But as the saying goes, a democratic country always gets the leadership that it deserves. And Dominicans deserve this arrogant punk for voting him in twice. I had been a UWPite for several years till October 2013, was even approached to be a candidate for this election, and not for once have any member of the UWP complain to Lennox to stop his unwarranted attack on the PM. Why did the UWP not ask Lennox to stop the attack on Rev. Peter R. Augustine and stop placing himself above God by taking away his anointing? Is that fair or is it that it only hurts when the shoe is on the other foot?

    • Ben Dover
      December 6, 2013

Dumb statement. When Lennox was pointing errors of Skerrit, he was not a politician as yet. He was just a talk show host. Plus he never called Skerrit unemployed or anything. There were many questionable things being done and Skerrit and Lennox was right to ask questions.

This is the team I belong to, not the team that have failed this country, because of one man, a poor communicator, a man gone mad.
The leader this (UWP)is not only smart, but he is highly respectful, and has a mind on his shoulder which is his.It is filled with ideas of where this country should be heading to, in terms of economic advancement, equal opportunities for all, and off course the engaging of minds around all corners of the globe.

A man that had a very powerful voice during the time of DFP and UWP, and under DLP has been part and parcel of the problem? FYI, when a human becomes a witch and is killed as a witch, her killer is not considered a murderer. However, if killed as a human his killer becomes a murderer. Similarly, when a Rev behaves like a Rev. he will be respected; but when he becomes a politician, he has literally given up on the anointing and deserves to be treated as a politician. During those past 14 years he has not behaved as a Rev and therefore you cannot blame Lenox or the opposition for putting him where he belongs.

As for this so called Peter R Augustine you are babbling about, if he is a preacher he has no darn business in politics, once he introduces politics on his pulpit, he now becomes fair-play in the game of politics.

Lennox is not the kind of person who picks on people, you can guaranty when he makes claims of anything he has a source, and he is usually correct at least eighty (85%) five percent of the time.

One could ask the Very same PM and his government ministers: ” How many of them were rich and well to do men and women before entering Politics?” How many of them came from upper class families?” It it a clear case of a human person who has forgotten his or her roots…….
The PM should be the last person to go down such road because no one in Dominica was born rich and famous, with big house and fleet of vehicles.
Such comments from a PM is a sign of desperation and sheer panic.. Its really time to save the PM from himself because the power seems to be going straight up to his head and its made manifest by arrogance and utter disrespect for his fellow political opponents.
Those on the other side should offer the other cheek and never fall for these cheap political tactics.. @Jabby You are nothing more than a political slave of Skerrit so Shut the Hell Up. Are you one of those who were clapping there, when one of the politicians you adore referred to him as God? Well he is your God because of your laziness. So wallow in his insults. Joshua is an extremely wise man, that’s why he will not come meet YOU AND SKERRIT IN THE GUTTER,or the RUMSHOP. The Prime Minister’s official position begins with HONOURABLE, I guess he chooses when he should wear it and when he should not, besides those rum bottle people he talking about might just be his own supporters, call a spade a spade, its a shame for a PM to speak that way and if the man cannot get a job its his fault too, he is the one who asked for the job to create jobs…. just saying.

I guess you have never listened to any of the Opposition talk shows, or no one would be shocked that the PM has finally answered. Or maybe you expected him never to respond.

One statement the man makes as compared to hundreds of statements the UWP has made about him and his government and the UWP supporters crying wolf?

A little bit of your own medicine and you crying that it is bitter.

It is politics – If you give you should be able to take and when you get yours do not cry foul. Know that you had it coming.

Political mapuis, diving into the gutter or toilet in order dig out garbage for the purpose of plastering one’s reputation, is part of the Labor Party culture. This type of politics is not new, it just gotten worse. The older folks cannot forget when a Labor Party Government Minister publicly described a lady politician under wears. Dominicans cannot forget the public remarks made by a madame Speaker of the house at a political meeting as regards the distance between the UWP and certain parts of a Chinese anatomy. Tony, on many occasions, has referred to members of the UWP as cockroaches, and different animals. A Minister of the Labor Government once referred to himself as a Rottweiler ,therefore, Mr. Francis should consider himself fortunate so far, if that is all Skeritt has so say about him.

@ just saying.. and others of the same perspective. Here is my question? So when does this end?

Was the PM challenged recently that would call for such a attacks or did he simply do it cause that’s who he is. I am so tired of this. Posts like yours always compares behavior instead of saying WRONG IS wrong. What the PM did was plain wrong. No excuses that he is “human” etc. It was NOT a spur of the moment or heat of the moment response in retaliation to some recent defamatory comment of him (the PM).

You know, I first believed that there was some truth in the rumor of “they can’t find jobs, they unemployed, they simply want to be in power” rhetoric , so I actually listened to Q95 this morning to hear their response, and realized that what the PM said was exaggerations filled with outrageous lies. He has lost my respect. I was really trying to hold on but….just tired!!!! I expect better from him. He is MY PM!

Just Blaze, I would really like to know what exactly you have against Lennox Linton. I have listened to Lennox for years, have not always agreed with the approach he took to a few matters but I honestly cannot recall him reducing himself to such lows. I wasn’t in favour for example, of his revelation of skerritt’s declaration to the IPO, that is until he revealed that the information was being circulated by tony asstoufan. Have you heard anything about taking him and the phantom member of the IPO who was supposed to have leaked the information to court since the truth came out? Lennox has only presented facts about the wrong things which skerritt has done. So you and your gang can stop with that foolishness about giving skerritt blows and get aboard the train to bring change to Dominica.

Josh ignore Roosie. I can’t say I am surprised because when a man shows you who he is, you have to believe him and WE know who the real Skerrit is. Stay on message and let overgrown juvenile deliquents expose themselves. Skerrit is in survival mode, he has to unwind like a ball of yarn, because he fears his feasting and gloating will be shrinking or completely disappear from his table. Skerrit is not even an issue to me, it’s the people who are defending this purile and crass behaviour that are scary. Many of them are jobless and have no means to improve themselves but at the expense of their inner core values, they will sacrifice even their kids to give false praise to a man who just a few years ago was bouncing cheques. Let Skerrit beat himself up and so it is written, so it shall be done!!! His tongue has more confessions to make. He should be ashamed that as a leader he has so many professionals, by far superior in intelligence than him, languishing.

This is the same man who travels, makes pronouncements at home urging Dominican professionals abroad to come back home, to set up business and employ people and then he turns around and slam them when his very policies marginalize and shut them down in favour of Chinese in their home country. That too shall pass. Skerrit is tired and out of touch with reality, he thinks every turn has to be a circus, he lacks the ability to debate issues or evoke a sense of hope in the Dominican people, so he is showing himself, I hope the masses listen to him, he is telling them he is bankrupt of ideas.

    • Admirer
      December 6, 2013

My darling TSB Skerrit is both protagonist and antagonist in his own play. The brother is weak in character and delusional. The man can’t stand up and debate issues, he has become a jester of labour always on displayn because coming from absolutely nothing, achieving nothing academically worth croaking about in terms of degree, and yet having vaulted from obscurity to PM and wealth beyond belief he’s in a diabolical state to hang on to power at any cost. Since when does owning you business and emplpying people or freelancing as a qualified consultant make one a loiterer or lacking in ambition? He isn’t a risk taker, he only knows how to drink and fatten himself up at the well so he is right to attempt to insult others.

As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself… Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.” ― Nelson Mandela.

Skerrit, the time you wasted to talk a bunch of ignorance on the radio station, you should have taken the time out to honor Nelson Mandela. Look at the time, you decided to talk a bunch of ignorance; while the world in morning one of the world’s greatest leader. Skerrit what will your legacy be? A LEADER OF EMBARRASSMENT….SHAMEFULNESS……..STUPESSSSSSS……..

Please accept the words of your opponent on this occasion Mr. Prime Minister – there could not have been truer or more sober words spoken in reaction to an action. Sometimes, out of the mouth of babes, wisdom comes flying by, grab it before it whistles away with the wind.

Amen Joshua Francis! You sure sound like your name. I am definitely not interested in Skerrits dirty mouth politics. As a person that love and respect people, Skerrit is definitely not appealing to me. A PM that curses its citizens in public? A Pm that can use this type of language on radio? I sure do not want my son to be like him!

He just did, can’t u read or u just don’t know substance when u see it. People ask for the Opposition to be positive and when they are, they still ask for them to be positive, they ask for the opposition to put forward their plans and when they do, they ask where are the plans, I must say its on purpose u all do that or some people are just blind and dumb.
