Isidore has nothing to do with Christmas morning fire – Astaphan

Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan (right) and attorney Lennox Lawrence at this morning's press conference.

Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan has labeled as allegations that his client Stephen Isidore has connections to a weekend fire at the home of former chief magistrate Glenworh Emanuel.

Astaphan has branded these allegations as “prejudicial” and believes that they are as a result of Isidore’s  relationship with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

Isidore is currently involved in a court battle with Emanuel, who is claiming that he (Isidore) stole over $6 million while being a partner in a law firm with Emanuel.

“As far as we know there is an ongoing police and fire investigation. The legal team and Mr. Isidore have given our fullest cooperation to the police investigating this matter and there have been discussions and meetings taking place from our side,” he stated.

Stephen Isidore at this morning's press conference.

“We have heard Mr. Glen Emanuel on Q95 speaking this morning; we hope that he has found the same amount of time to speak to the senior police officers who are investigating this matter. We are not in a position one way or the other to say anything about this fire, unless and until the police investigations are over,” Astaphans said.

“Immediately  after the fire and on Christmas morning there were those, who without the slightest evidence and no more than the widest prejudicial speculation, sought to implicate Mr. Steve Isidore either expressly or inferentially or his legal team because of an ongoing legal matter before the civil and criminal court,” he said.

He further stated, “We think that this rush to judgment is extra-ordinarily prejudicial. The headlines… on a certain radio and on the internet range from arson to attempted murder, without the slightest indication from the police or fire department, and or more specifically, without the investigations being complete.”

Astaphan said that there are no grounds or evidence which supports that his client was involved in the fire.

“In the absence of evidence and reasonable grounds – and there are none – which indicate any involvement, far less grounds for suspicion of involvement of Mr Isidore, we condemn such behavior as lunacy and as recklessness, if you will, by naked prejudice and ignorance…” he said.

The senior counsel said that Isidore’s home has been vandalized on several occasions in the past and the matter was never brought to the media.

“Steve Isidore’s house has been vandalized and ransacked on at least two or three occasions. The last occasion occurred after July 2010 when the dispute and disillusion of the partnership was well on its way. At no time did Mr. Steve Isidore ever accuse Mr Emanuel or any special person of being responsible for the break-ins to his house. At no time has Mr. Steve Isidore gone on radio or on the media to accuse Mr. Emanuel of any act….” he said.

Astaphan accused the United Workers Party of using his client as a scape goat “and to use this matter with Mr Glen Emanuel as political ammunition for their war of misinformation”.

He assured that neither him nor his clients had any personal hostility against Emanuel.

Isidore has spoken to police since the incident, Astaphan said.

The senior counsel was speaking at a press conference at his office earlier today.

    :) Why don’t we let the courts hand the legal matter and strive to become better citizens of our beautiful and blessed island Dominica, we allow politicians to brainwash us and everyday instead of loving each other, we keep critizing our brothers and sisters. In the days of slavery, it was slaves brought the white man to catch the maroons, now we are doing the same. the opposition is using us to bring down each, remember we have children growing up, and they are looking at us, and every negative thing we do or say registers in their brain, and when later they attack others we blame others, Let us take a good look at ourselves and share love with each other, leave politics to the politians, Our day is election day, the rest of the time let us teach our children to pray and give our lives to Christ, This is the only way our island can change for the better, Let us all abide in the shelter of The Most High. God bless us and God bless Dominica.

    Right is right! After reading the UWP posting on DNO I cannot help but to be disappointed about how this information seeks to sway public opinion about a matter that has not been finalized as being a criminal matter by the police. We should be more concern about not inflaming the situation given how volatile the acts of violence are on island to date. This was really irresponsible to address an unfortunate matter with such under currents from other issues that have not been established as related to this matter directly because the investigation is incomplete. Now, keep in mind I do not support any party for this very reason the lack of maturity to show statesmanship and not look for short term gains for long term regrettable outcome like social unrest in the same country we profess to love. I will add that if the matter is as suggested by UWP and others as being a criminal act then truth needs no debate and as such the condemnation will take its natural course instead of trying to steer it in our favored direction. This only serves to alienate potential supporters for UWP because they might be looking for someone to show calm even in the middle of an all out crisis. This is what I am looking for at this point people who can inspire others not by mere fancy grammar and accents, but to really make them question that deep consciousness that despite who you are speaks truth to power. Where are our leaders so we can follow them and make our children proud? Please look around our children are depending on us to win this battle for them not for us which would be a short term outcome, but for their future to look back to something they can be proud of tomorrow. Can we really say that we are looking at the big picture? I know that Lennox et al have done a lot to expose information that have not been proven in the court of law as true, but one has to admire his guts to put himself on the line. My hope is that he does not let arrogance rule his decisions because some people have the ability to be so narrowly focused that they miss what is important. Looking at the advocates for truth in Dominica my hope is that if you all are seeking to restore democracy do it for the children to have a better future.

    I have known my country to be the kind where almost every aging citizen would like to have his or her last peaceful days spent, but nowadays the thought of being peaceful in this lovely nature island is becoming more and more uncertain to many. Can you imagine the threat that even the elderly face with them rogue fellers today? One would imagine that the elderly or rather our senior citizens should be respected with all accounts, but instead we see an attempt to wipe them up even when they have the right to their rights. Although one can conclude that Mr. Isidore may not have direct link to the action of arson on that cool christmas morning, but the mere fact that he is in a court matter with his once shared partner of the known law firm, it is believed that Isidore cannot bare the public outcry for his most disgraced alleged misconduct and the 42 charges, he may well be an indirect actor in this horrendous, brutal and atrocious attempt of murder through arson. Should he deny his involvement, then the good Lord that we all know will surely judge the criminal inescapable of fire burning. Remember the words of the good book. Thou shalt not steal and thou shalt not kill; then If one does one of the above, then certainly he will face prosecution by the master knowing that he will stay unrepented. The evidence must come to light whoever is the culprit. Watch it labourites if you only talk too much then you will be targets as well. Save your country from these hooligans.

    That’s why black people are last all over the world.

    I don’t want to be black anymore. we are a stupid race

    Look at the people who are defending the EVIL of Roosevelt Skerrit: White skin upper class people who have historically looked down of anything black- Tony Astaphan, Parry Bellot, The Nassiefs (whose family history is one of oppression of black former slaves), Lenox Honeychurch… and now the Chinese. My God Lord please help our BLACK PEOPLE open their eyes.

      I will start of by saying to you. If you think education is expensive, try ignorance, you know being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to know and see the things you say and believe, that is sad. Nothing is more dangerous than your sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity to some of the statements you have made. Prejudice, is a great time saver it gives the opportunity to form opinions without having to get the facts and that is simply what you are doing.

      Mans greatest enemy is his own self, especially his perceptions, thoughts and beliefs of others. There is so much absurdities in some of the things you wrote. Finally, why is it you are asking for prayers to change people, when in fact you are the one who needs the prayers to lift you out of your ignorance.

    Tony makes absolutely no sense and Isidore sure does not look comfortable during the press conference. While we do not know who did it and we’ll never get to know who did until an independent investigating team leads the investigation, one thing that’s very clear to me and any open minded person is that of Astaphan’s strategy to hold a press conference which to my opinion, left more questions than answers. Prior to Tony’s press I was like these guys would not be stupid enough to do that. However after the press conference I am like, whaw, whaw, very interesting. We really need help from the FBI to deal with this one.

  16. COMMON SENSE
    December 28, 2010

    I did not go to law school but I have plenty common sense. I listened to that press conference today. A question was asked whether he expressed his sympathy or his condolences to Mr. Emmanuel after fire gutted his house. The man could not answer the question. The man is asking about the cause of the fire rather than the fact that a fire occurred. They then moved to the cause of the fire. We do not know the cause. It is under police investigation. My concern is do you need to know the cause of a fire to express your concern? Did you know that the fire was going to happen why you were not surprised? Are you not concerned that you are in the neighbourhood and there was a suspicious fire? You knew about Isidore’s burglaries and yet a suspicious bottle was found at the fire site and it is of no concern?

    My other point of concern is why would a man who has nothing to do with a fire, go to his lawyer and then to the police to say ‘It wasn’t me?’ I find this very suspicious! If I am innocent I am not going to the police! If they come to me, yes, I will co-operate. You must agree that the actions of certain people after this fire is very suspicious! None of you acted surprised!

    If Stephen Isidore had his home burglarized and as an attorney he chose not to involve the police, why cry now? It was his choice! He knows what is in his house he woud never call the police!

    I think it is time we stop insulting the intelligence of some of us who go little school. We do not have a law degree but we have plenty common sense.

    • Anonymous
      December 29, 2010

      The burglaries at Isidore’s home WERE IN FACT REPORTED, next time ask a question first. I understand the last two sentences of your comment clearly.

      But do you know that the victim of the fire IS NOT CO-OPERATING WITH THE POLICE, not even to give a STATEMENT OF WHAT HAPPENED, YET he is on the media giving information.

      Isn’t that MORE SUSPICIOUS than Isidore co-operating with the police? I listened to a particular radio station the day the fire happened and there is something like innuendo, that can be the basis for lawsuit. In case you have time check the Oxford online dictionary for the meaning and then listen to the the investigative journalists and tell me whether nobody hinted that Isidore might be responsible for the burning of the house.

      December 29, 2010

      Some of us like to use the word “common sense” and find it fashionable. However let us not forget before something can be considered common sense, there must be and should be convincing evidence that it worthy of being common sense. You have shown none of that, other than making you own assumption and then making your own conclusion. What really got me is your comment quote “You must agree that the actions of certain people after this fire is very suspicious! None of you acted surprised! ” really, what actions are you talking about. The incident is under investigation can we not wait and see what happens, isn’t that what common sense should be, you have not shown any use of common sense but rather what you think and believe and that is called an opinion.

    I have carefully listened and read those who have commented on and denounced the attack at Mr. Emmanuel’s home. No one has said that it is Isidore who did it. There is widespread suspcion that the fire may be linked to the Court case involving the two gentlemen. THis is not surprising and perhaps understandable given recent events surrounding the case. Having a suspicion that there may be a link is not the same thing as accusing Mr. Isidore. Mr. Astaphan must stop playing his evil mind games.

    Mr. Emmanuel and his wife were both at their home, they were both at asleep, the vehicle which they use to commute between Mr. Emmanuel ‘s office and his home was parked in the garage, Mr. Emmanuel’s bedroom is above the garage where the fire attack was concentrated, it was late in the night, both occupants are advanced in age…yet Mr. Astaphan refuses to admit that the fire attack was an attempt to kill them. Is he thinking that the owners set fire to their own vehicle and home and gravely risk their lives to seek sympathy?

    I’m sorry, but this Tony Astaphan is a paternalistic fool with a condescending attitude. Just seeing him and hearing his patronising voice makes me cringe.
    Anyway, the light is becoming clearer and clearer with this entire case. God does not like ugly, and Tony and his deeds regarding my beautiful country, Dominica, is extremely ugly.

    Dominicans should not believe this press conf is just a typical spin tatics from the evil side to keep their ignorant base oiled..

    the issue i think personaly the more protest actions thats the cure and clean civil unrest..

    block roads etc will drawn international attention to the cause in Dominica…talk wont break this evil spell over the island….

    WE DO NEED MORE ACTIONS…..drill a few holes in the airstrip that will be a clever move to show disgust not harming anyone but taking actions that will make the Most Corrupted Regime ever in Dominica’s History Labour Feel the hard way!

    Please lets intensitfy actions to make a mark so the International Community at see how the citizens are being subjected to corrupted regime….Labour!

    Dominicans talk talk too much….is anyone courageous to bit the bullet and take such actions!!

      December 28, 2010

      Are you really calling for people to take such action as damaging Melville Hall?

      Are you mad or are you just trying to sound like a militant. A sick one at that.

      Who do you think will suffer from such actions, not the DLP, but the people of Dominica.

      Make a mark you say, well I’ll tell you what mark it will make, a bad one. The International Community will hear about this and think ‘typical blacks, this kind of thing only happens in black countries. What do you expect from uncivilised, uneducted people’.

        Fed up thank u. This person stoney is sick sick sick, if they think that by disrupting and distroying the international communuty will be impressed. all the world will say is what we tell u those blacks dont understand how to communicate like civilised humans, they are still savages masquarading as civilised. they wil sit back and watch us distroy each other, in the mean time when we finish the self-distruction, they will come in as Saviour and all the things we accuse each other off they wil do it to us but ten times worse, but those that staying in Atlanta and inciting riots and distruction, dont have to worry, when Dominicans suffering under the hand of the international community because they safe in Atlanta drawing their food stamps.
        The slave mind is still alive and well I see, we dont want to talk with each other without violence.

      Drill a few holes in the airstrip huh? Dominicans open your eyes. This is the UWP strategy!!

      They need a pretext to justify radical actions. What better pretext than to say that the PM and his lawyer sanctioned an attempted murder on a lawyer who was in court with them?

      Is overthrowing a gov’t with an 18 out of 21 seat mandate what democracy means?!!

      Even if Dominicans made a wrong choice then they have to live with it, and then make a change the next time elections come around. That’s how a democracy operates.

      Those kind of statements give me just cause to have thoughts that certain people will stop at nothing ,but just to cause confusion and try to destabilise the country for their own selfish political motives.It certainly will not surprise me to find out that the fire was deliberately put by people who want to put Isidore and in extension the PM in bad light.When people live a life of continous revenge and malice then I say “The Lord forgive them”.
      Isidore is no fool and I am sure he knows that if something like that happened he would be the first suspect so I put it to you Dominicans,beware off all those persons pointing fingers at him and saying that he was responsible in some form or manner for the fire.

    The moreI hear this guy the more i am amazed. You know during the days of the karate craze I became fascinated by the art of jijutsu – somebody correct me please which I think is the art of using your opponents weight against him ala Steven Seagal. Tony is master dan 10th degree black belt at this. good thing I never learn it. The man using us against ourselves. Unbelieveable. You see black people and their simplemindedness.

      I must agree with you brother. Its a shame!!!

      That’s why black people are last all over the world.

      We have a nasty habit of putting others before us.

      Right now we have a BLASTED ARAB taking simpleminded black people for a ride.

      I don’t want to be black anymore. we are a stupid race

      Chines fight for Chinese, Whites fight for White, Japanese fight for Japanese, Indians fight for Indian….. and blacks fight for all of them against himself. FOOLISH BLACK PEOPLE.

    ‘We are not in a position one way or the other to say anything about this fire, unless and until the police investigations are over,” Astaphans said’. What exactly does this mean ????? Nowhere have I seen him sympathising with the Emanuel’s. Boy these people are amazing. Did anyone say it was Isidore who was responsible for the fire ? Who has more to lose from this case ? Isidore or the PM ?

    Tony Astaphan thinks that he is the only one with sense to speak in Dominica, and to a certain extent I blame us Dominicans because we always tend to think that foreigners or persons of foreign decent are better than us. Tony Astaphan is rude, disgusting and an embarrassment to us all. Why is he in control of our country ? Boy Dice was soooooooooooooo real back then “Puppet Master’ but now he is pulling the strings of many more puppets.

    Psalm 91 (New King James Version)

    Psalm 91
    Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God
    1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
    Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
    2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
    My God, in Him I will trust.”

    3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler[a]
    And from the perilous pestilence.
    4 He shall cover you with His feathers,
    And under His wings you shall take refuge;
    His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
    5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
    Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
    6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
    Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

    7 A thousand may fall at your side,
    And ten thousand at your right hand;
    But it shall not come near you.
    8 Only with your eyes shall you look,
    And see the reward of the wicked.

    9 Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge,
    Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
    10 No evil shall befall you,
    Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
    11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
    To keep you in all your ways.
    12 In their hands they shall bear you up,
    Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
    13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
    The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

    14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
    I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
    15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble;
    I will deliver him and honor him.
    16 With long life I will satisfy him,
    And show him My salvation.”
