It’s fight back time – PM Skerrit

Skerrit said his party has been silent for month
Skerrit said his party has been silent for months

Leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), Roosevelt Skerrit who has been under pressure in recent times has said that, “it is fight back time.”

He made that statement while addressing a public meeting held at St Joseph on Tuesday night.

“I have called the family of Labour here into St Joseph to say to you it is fight back time,” he said. “We have set silent for months and allowed them to strut their stuff. They have gone far and wide with this insidious campaign targeting the economic welfare and well-being of Dominica. Tonight I say to the family of the Dominica Labour Party, I have had enough ladies and gentlemen.”

Recently the Opposition United Workers Party has been asking many questions, especially in relations to the Economic Citizenship Program. Additionally, several articles have popped up on the internet which the Prime Minister alleges is the work of the opposition.

According to Skerrit, in the coming days and weeks, the party shall unveil strategies to deal with all the ‘lies that have been told and the propaganda that has been promoted’.

“We shall outline policies to deal with genuine areas of concern and we shall address areas of worry of discomfort to you the people of Dominica,” he stated.

He indicated that Dominica shall be governed by best practices and, “we shall never be too big or too arrogant to address genuine areas of concern.”

Skerrit stated further that in addition to the address to the nation, he expects to deliver soon, the DLP plans to stage public meetings in every constituency, “in the hope of educating and sensitizing residents to what is happening in the country.”

“We shall build Dominica better,” he noted. “We shall build back and transform this country in the next four years and that is what has Lennox Linton and his co-conspirators mad and angry.”

For a Londoner, you seem to have quite a problem understanding English. I had to reread the article after reading your comments and from my understanding, the PM was not referring to physical fights my dear. Please read in its entirety because its not only physical fighting that is fighting. If the PM wanted to incite physical fighting against members of the opposition, during the elections when the UWP people were destroying people’s property, posters and actually attacking people, he would not have repeatedly asked Laborites to refrain from violence.

Nothing is heard of the PM for sometime and suddenly he comes out of ‘hiding’ with nothing new.
Speech from a cornered man spitting venom.

It is a sad fact that was said was what the majority of his followers wanted to hear as they are not interested in or know how policies should be carried out.

Why not spend some of the $millions collected dredging the Roseau River, clearing the arears in Town overlooking the River destroyed b Erika. Hundreds of visitors from cruise ships see these ‘eyesores’ daily. Would these areas be treated differently if DLP had won them?

How long before Erika is used as an excuse for works not being carried out?

To All Dominicans where ever you are, please refrain from instigating the violence that King Skerro is advocating especially at this time of year (carnival). Be mindful that most people are having a sewoe time and as such may be mentally impared (Beeelay) and most likely to behave in a manner they generally would not.

Provocation or instigation will definitely be on the side of the person being called traitor if he gets offended/ insulted and choose to daycarlay the instigator. We do not want any mischief during the carnival so I implore on all the importance of remaining calm even when you are chastised or even called coward for not responding.

Again, make a report to the police and clog the court system with civil suits if you feel insulted but no violence please. Skerrit time is coming sooner rather than later.

    Always Assertive!

I am not a laborite but voted them in 2015. However, as a born again believer, I CANNOT CONDONE EVIL. Mr. Skerrit it is very wrong to call on supporters to attack the opposition leader, Monel Wiilam, Thompson, and others. who were duly elected by the people of Dominica. This is very worrying and troubling, because we know how supporters can act when called upon by their leader. Look, Linton just had to pay a large sum of money to Mr. Byrns and we saw how his supporters acted to pay. We also remember when Mr. Savrin called on supporters to boycott BreezyMart, and how supporters responded, which led to the closure of the store. For the PM to call on his followers to call Linton and other UWPites “TRAITORS” is inciting violence and provocation. This is a very, very, very serious threat not just to those he called by name but even to innocent people. Folks, imagine being on the plane and someone calls Linton Traitor and trouble starts on the plane. That trouble could cause a crash.

I had already bought tickets to come home for the carnival but not me again! I mean put all politics aside and lets think as adults for a few seconds.

Dominica is a very small island with less than 70,000 people, where everybody knows each other, knows which party each other supports, knows each other’s physical address, and we are one week before carnival, a time that most criminals reserve to commit crimes..

For the Honorable Prime Minister to call laborites and say, “I have called the family of Labour here into St Joseph to say to you it is fight back time,” and to encourage them to call members and friends of the opposition “Traitors” whether in car, street, supermarket, plane etc. is nothing short of calling for violence during the carnival, and for that I will not come to Dominica, and I will encourage friends, families, to stay home.

Such call is malicious, and I am calling on the Police to arrest Skerrit for inciting and instigating national violence and…

It is sad to say but Dominican and their leaders are on a brink of a nervous breakdown. There is to much happening. Not in the favor of this tiny island but in the favor of everyone for themselves. When can u all come together and see that u all are hurting each other. When u all had nothing there was peace. Now u all want to think that u are the U S A but u are not!!! When will Dominica realize that it is not a continent but a tiny island and stop wasting money it doesn’t have. From the head up to the poor man lives above their means. Its high time to stop and love each other. Share what u have and Dominica will rise from th e ashes. Right now there is a lot off anger from Dominica’ s leaders the opposition and the rest of its people. Non Violence. When you all see each other as human then Dominica will rise from the ashes.

The fact that Skerrit told his supporters to call members and friends of the UWP TRAITORS, is proof that Skerrit knows a person, other than members of the UWP, that is a traitor and deserves to be tried before the courts, for treason
Here is Merriam Webster’s Dictionary example of a traitor: “She has been called a traitor to the liberal party’s cause. He was a traitor who betrayed his country by selling military secrets to the enemy.”

Here are some acts committed against Dominica, and I Skerrit to tell us who committed them and if he believes that person is a traitor:

    1. Who is the owner of MY Dominica Trade House?
    2. Who sold or gave Diplomatic passport to NG LAP SENG, who is now jailed in NY for bribery? By the way, Skerrit was seen in photo with NG, ASH and others, a week before they were all arrested by FBI.

Not how I am going to work with the opposition in a respectful and pleasant manner, moreover putting Dominica first. Not I will stop pitting party loyalist against each other . . .not me against them and them against me . .
One day skerrit, Dominicans will overcome and shall use your reign as an example to not to go back. We will learn how absolute power will not be tolerated by no one. We will learn that empowering your friends and family, loyalists and your self will never see the light of day of any future prime minister. Everything does come to an end under the sun. The rebirth of Dominica will happen one day.

DNO wisely addressed Skerrit as DLP leader and not as PM of Dominica, because it is insane to think a PM would set up his country for trouble, like Skerrit did last night.

Although I realize DNO was too embarrass to put out some of the evil statements of Skerrit, but just so that readers know what we are talking about, here is part of what the PM said: First of all, here is a quote from DNO so we could see who he is addressing; “I have called the family of Labour here into St Joseph to say to you it is fight back time.” Then he went on to say,

The UWP opposition and their friends are traitors. Ladies and gentlemen, when you see then in their car, on the bus, at the supermarket, walking on the streets, on the plane “call them TRAITORS”. He continues, How did I say to call them?”….

Apart from this meeting inciting violence to the highest extent, it is also putting our sons and daughter in a position where they could be sued.

How many diplomatic passports have you issued and to who? Name them.
How many passports have you sold since 2005? Who are the new citizens? Name them.
How much money has Dominica collected from the sale of passport and where is it?
Why is your baby mother a passport vendor, together with all your friends, while decent citizens are not given an equal opportunity?
What is your true worth? Are you prepared to declare all your assets and allow the IPO to do its work?
How much did the Nigerian billionaire ex-minister pay for her diplomatic passport?
When are you going to purchase DCP and with what?
Why are the Bath Estate apartment buildings still closed almost two years after completion, while the people of Petite Savanne are being evicted because they have overstayed their welcome?
Why are the passport pushers hiding to sponsor the carnival queens?

It was one of the saddest days in the history of Dominica; and i’m wondering how long will it take for us to recover as a God fearing people. I read with interest that the Zika virus could affect the brain of babies and i’m beginning to wonder if the experts should not take a good look at skerrit so as to make a determination whether the virus also has an effect on the brain of this compulsive lair. I have listened to past leaders of Dominica address their supporters and the nation never have i heard so much venom; outrage and garbage come out of the mouth of a leader. I realy felt sorry for the little boy and his dumb supporters ( being led like sheep to the slaughter) The contents of the delivery of most of the speakers did not surprise me one bit i expected it to be Linton! “Leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), Roosevelt Skerrit who has been under pressure in recent times has said that, “it is fight back time.”

First of all DNO, I am very offended about the paragraph about though I concur with the sentiments. Yes, Skerrit is supposed to be the leader of the DLP but in reality he is the PRIME MINISTER of Dominica, who set the tone for a civil war between his supporters and that of the UWP, just a few days before carnival. It would have been bad enough for any political leader to say what Roosevelt Skerrit said, but when he said those things in his capacity as PM, expect some trouble during the carnival.

Fellow Dominicans in the DIASPORA, I am calling upon you to call your children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, parents, uncles and WARN them not to be fools with Skerrit

WHERE IS DEMOCRACY??? How on earth can a SITTING Prime Minister go out on a public platform and call for his supporters to agitate, taunt and provoke Citizens of his Country??? Can you, again, imagine the President of the United States calling on Democrats to shout “TRAITOR” at Republicans or anyone else who questions or criticizes his policies and practices? Don’t you think that there would be an immediate call for the impeachment of the President??? In the United States, with the proliferation of guns, both legal and illegal a reckless, utterance such as that made by the Prime Minister of Dominica would be considered a declaration of civil war! It is in fact shameful that our Prime minister is so emotional that he does not understand that as the leader of the Country there are lines that he just should NOT cross with regards to public statements and utterances. I agree! This was a serious error of judgement. You can’t allow people to provoke you into recklessness because at the end of the day you are the Prime Minister and every word you speak must be able to stand up to scrutiny!

I do not necessarily agree that the issue is just about questioning policies and practices, it is also about constant and relentless allegations for about fifteen years which have smeared the gentleman’s character. I must still use the word allegations because they are all yet to be proven, which prompts me to think that this guy must either be the luckiest man in the world not to have any of the allegations so far stick, or he has every institution in the world on his pay cheque covering up for him.

About democracy, remember it has universal application, so it allows for free speech but also for the protection of those spoken about be they king or commoner.

To continue, I also cannot help but notice that the American public is a little different from us in that they enforce standards for incumbents as well as those aspiring to office. I noted their treatment of that arrogant, loose-mouthed cannon Donald Trump in Iowa. The lesson was that it is not the media hyped polls which determine who is Presidential candidate or the President but the actual voters. It is still early days for that contest, but it was interesting to see that turn of events wasn’t it?

Ms. Saunders, I would put it to you that those allegations that mr. Skerrit has dared to challenge either did not make it to court (Matt Peltier’s questions about th P.M.’s assets, when an out-of-court settlement was reached) or are deliberately being delayed by his legal advisers (Dr. Thomson’s accusation of the appointment of diplomats of questionable character). As you rightly say, there has been a plethora of accusations over many years, none of which have been challenged and the question is why not? It is reasonable to suspect that mr. Skerrit does not cherish the prospect of being questioned under oath in court, is it not? Under these circumstances I would submit that his continuous silence is tantamount to an admission of wrong-doing.

      • February 3, 2016

@ Barbara Saunders…First of all thank you for understanding my perspective. As for your take on the issue of whether or not it is about questioning the policies and practices of our Government, we need to admit seriously that the evidence of many of these failed policies and practices are right before our eyes. We do not need any further evidence that our Diplomatic Passports were issued to individuals under investigation, arrested or awaiting trial! We do not need further evidence that the mydominicatradehouse.com website is using our country’s symbols, emblems and images to falsely advertise businesses that do do not exist in Dominica. We do not need further evidence to see that the Layou Hotel project which arose from the Economic Citizenship Program was a dismal failure and that the passport money amassed therefrom has disappeared. We do not need further evidence to see that the highly touted Moroccan Hotel was abandoned and seems to be forgotten. It’s right THERE!!!

Titiwi; Labour of Love and company!

I didn’t realise that when someone makes an allegation about you, you are the one obligated to prove that the allegation is not true. I thought it was the other way around that when we make an allegation about a person’s character we must have the evidence, given that at the end of the day a person’s good name or character is all they really have!

But TITIWI if as you say in support of your argument that there was an out of court settlement in the Matt Peltier matter was it the PM who paid Matt or the other way round? I don’t get your point in faulting the PM there! I also do not subscribe to the view that non-response is confirmation of guilt.

I have no interest in defending anyone, PM or Opposition as they are the only guardians of their motives! Only time will reveal who was on Dominica’s side in all of what is going on. In the meantime, I reserve my right to analyse everything and everyone!

DNO, this is not fight back time as you so smoothly put it. This is the prime minister of Dominica, officially declaring the opening of a Civil war between supporters of his party and supporters of the UWP, just one week before carnival. The timing is very important as Skerrit chose the correct time for the meeting and to fire up his supporters or calling them to action rather, the eve of carnival where all kinds of lawlessness usually take place.. I mean for a prime minister to tell his supporters to identify uwp and their supporters, and call them trator, whether they are in their car, on the bus, on the plane, at the supermarket, is nothing short of setting up a trouble during the carnival.

Calling a person “traitor” is an offense under Cap.53 of the Dominica Revised Laws of 1961 if they view this as an insult. Yes, using “insultive/ insulting language” to another is a crime under our laws.

I listened to the PM but he should think before he speak and I was very disgust with Skerrit behavior and attitude, and for people who want to follow the suggestions of Skerrit should be prepared to stand up in Court to defend themselves because if they believe that Skerrit legal attorney will be there to defend them they better think twice, it’s Canival time and to insight people like this is dangerous for Skerrit .
Why didn’t Skerrit explain to the public why he said in his budget 2014-2015 that they only made $ 25 million in selling our birth rite, and now Vince Henderson part of his Administration telling us that in 6 months they made $ 124 millions ask Skerrit to explain that, so if you have money to pay court fees go a head supporters of his because the biggest traitor in Dominica right now is Skerrit., your ppl just sat there and do nothing. Definition of “traitor” (Oxford dictionary:

“one who acts disloyalIy (to country, leader, cause etc…)”

I hear mr. Skerrit calling members of the opposition traitors and exhorting his supporters to insult political opponents in public with that epithet.
However, one must ask how we should term mr. Skerrit’s act of making agreements with Chinese interests, concerning the future of his country, behind the back of his country’s then leader?
I think mr. Skerrit would be well advised to fulfill his promises and put all his efforts into building a more equitable society at home rather than concentrate on amassing fortunes for himself and his cohorts.
Instead of belligerent talk that would be far more effective in creating unity and a common sense of purpose.

The Supreme Leader has decided to fight back against those who question his policies and practices with regards to the sale of our sovereignty and the vast amounts of monies being collected and not being put to the benefit of the common Citizens of Dominica. The great and wonderful, beloved and ordained Prime Minister says that he will “fight back” in the defense of issuing Diplomatic Passports to numerous persons whom are either under investigation, arrested or awaiting trial in criminal matters. The great King of Dominica advised his supporters to approach his dissenters on the roads, in their cars, on the buses, at their workplace and everywhere else and to agitate them with taunts by calling them “traitors”! Of course, the Supreme Leader knows that in this highly volatile political environment, what he is pushing his supporters to do is basically advocating violence. I am NOT, for one, going to approach anyone and call him/her any derogatory names. I see trouble brewing!!

I saw a very troubled man ranting and raving at a tribal meeting last night. The Zica virus is threatening Dominica but the tribal leader is not interested instead he gathers his tribal followers to call other Dominican TRAITORS where ever they see them.
Not enough blood is flowing in the country, the Tribal Leader wants more blood to flow.
If I am going about my business peacefully and from nowhere a member of the Red Tribe calls me Traitor, what I’m I suppose to do? Does the Tribal Leader know what a Traitor is?
Roosevelt Skerrit is acting like a raving lunatic and sadly he looks very sick and afraid of something. His main fear is that he is being exposed in the international media and it appears that he is on the run.

Took some time off last night to watch the garbage meeting that was held in St. Joseph and my word that was indeed rubbish. Their speeches were so predictable it’s like I could tell what they were going to say before they said it. First of all, Ian Dog-last sounded like he was drunk. He boasted that the NEP created 500 jobs. Ok, fine, that’s just 500. What about the other thousands who are unemployed? As expected, there wasn’t any talk of a clear cut plan to take the country forward. The highlight of the night was mainly about bashing Linton and the Workers Party and giving them maypwe. They claimed that they were educating their feeble crowd about the tactics of UWP. They claimed that there has been mass development since Erika, so much so that people who came down for carnival were amazed by the progress they’ve made leaving them to wonder if there was even a storm to begin with. Talk about a goat dressed in sheep’s clothing then talk about DLP continued ….

I stayed up and listened to the meeting up until about 2am this morning. Instead of hearing clear policies and objectives laid out by the various ministers within the government, I heard the various ministers thanking one PM like a supreme leader (the best thing since the invention of the World Wide Web).
The ministers then turned their focus to blasting the opposition which i found distasteful. There was absolutely no substance in their speech. There was an abject paucity of information as to how the government intends to turn the economy around, how they are going to create jobs, how they are going to get agriculture and manufacturing flourishing again, their strategy to make Dominica the Eco Tourism destination of the Caribbean. Not one sound economic plan or policy for the country.
