James fed up with silence over villa ownership issue

James

President of the United Workers Party (UWP) Edison James has spoken against what he says is the silence of local institutions on a controversial “villa ownership” issue affecting the country.

James, who spoke at the Fifth People’s Parliament in Wesley last night, criticised the church and employers, among others, for not offering a voice on what he deems a crucial matter affecting the country.

“…. The employers silent except when they talking about who goes on sick leave and which doctor gives more sick leave in the country,” he said.

The former prime minister said he is convinced that the church and even the Dominica Bar Association have failed the people of Dominica with their “silence”.

“I am a member of the Christian Council. The church of which I am a member is a member of the Christian council. I am the leader of an organisation in my church so I am part of the church, but the church has failed us,” he said.

    @Big-bannan:

Eddison James and the U W P have built the warner to belfast Road,
the Delice to pitite savanne Road,
the trafalga to wotten waven road,
they secured the funding for the irregation system that this labour gobvernment has sitting in Castlebruce,
they built the Castlebruce secondary School,
    the Grand Bay secondary School,
they started the north Eastern Education complex that has now been reduced by this labour administration,
they settled the windblow people of Castlebruce land problem
They initiated the World Creole Music Festival the only economic activity that this government now dpends on
they had a reputable hotel chain waiting to invest at T BAY in Portsmouth should the jet strip airport come on stream.
they acquired all the lands for the jet strip airpotr at Wood ford Hill and Wesley,
they brought the water to the Carib Territory, They built a new wing at the salybia primary school
they extended the kalinago territory by 82.3 acres of land
they built the michael Douglass bolivard.among several other projects within just four and a half years; clean and transparent leadership no corruption according to Tony astaphans, Burnard wiltshire and David Bruney three top attorneys all served and attached to the labour party.

compare that to this Skerrit administration, million dollars assets five thousand dollars salary, lands in wall house , trafalgar mansion on vieille case, Villas in Savanne Pye, cottages by ross, big pajeros and suv, sex gifts from China, bank account in Cayman, surrender of bird island to chavez, bin and fertilizer bobol and the list goes on.

Make Politicians work for their money like the rest of us,since Parliament makes nothing that anyone wants to buy the pay of Politicians has to be taken from the pockets of the useful citizens in form of tax. We should never forget that tax is a compulsory levy, enforce by the threat of prison, by which the productive are made to subsidise the unproductive. Edison knows too well that corruption took place under his tenure as Prime Minister however not one single member of his party were tried for any crimainal acts we still don’t have any system in place to combat this serious problem, corruption is a social and economic disease and is rampant in our country: PS I don’t carry any flags.

    God bless our beautiful Island.

@True Dominican: I understand your plea in considering Eddison an important figure in Dominican Politics. But please tell me why you say that, what has Eddison done that causes you to make that statement. I dislike Skerrit and his ideology and dread Ambrose as a minister.. but i cannot understand what it is the Eddie is doing or have done for Dominica. Help me please.

Eddison is among the best politician, we now have in the state, i admire his courage, he is hard working, committed, honest with integrety to give free to you labourites, ask Tony, what was his finding after he engineered the false propaganda against Eddison and the U W P, and how much he was paid to conduct an enquire against the same.

We Dominicans have problems. when you talking they saying you talking to much. When you quiet they saying you mo mo. I think it is the little things that we don’t talk about that is affecting us the most. Another thing is if something happen today it is a big deal but After a few days pass we forget about it. We got to stop that kind of thinking and let the people WE appoint to answer to us. If they can’t come with an answer them something is wrong. So long people want answers to these questions and up to now WE the people can’t get an answer. This my people is wrong. Let the UWP do their good job that they have been doing.

Who is in charge of reconstructing Dominica? I agree that answers are needed, but after all, they have been singing the same song, with no change in lyrics. Isnt’ it time that a diffrenet song and tune be played.

Mr Edison – show me why i should want to vote for you. Do not tell me why i should hate DLP. Show me what difference you can make as a PM. Highlight your strengths, not your weaknesses. I do not need to see you and your team beating a dead horse. I want to see you leading your horse to the stream. Let us want to drink what you are offering. Do not try to beat a dead issue.

If you trust that the people of Dominica are not blind and want differently, then show us what you will, can and must do.

Living in the past may not necessarily advance you in the future. Live for tomorrow and show us what your plans are to move Dominica forward.

@diaspora: Why would anyone want to appoint a commission to investigate what a crazy man is ranting and raving about. It is eating up Lennox up inside inspite of years of his personal time he has dedicated to bring the Prime Minister down he has not succeeded so far. Could someone talk to Lennox. I believe that his family is concern about his mental state. The brother is crying out for help, please someone send him a life line.

Only Eddo that want to know and to know how he can get a slice of the action.

If Dominicans want to know then we want to know what UWP did when in government between 1995 to 2000.

Why did Mr. James ran to the same churches to get PM Charles to block the inquiry? What and who were he trying to protect? Why was the IPO initiated in the first place? Who gave the DLP the motivation to have such a law in the first place?

If we cannot understand that the UWP is no angel then we will accept Satan trying to correct SIN.

Who would you prefer to judge you, God or Satan?

DLP is not a saint either. DFP is no saint as well. All politicians are corrupt. Why? They all speak untruths and do anything to gain power. This is where it all starts – with lies and deceit.

I dont thing that the PM should have Tony speaking on his behalf because every time he opens his mouth he makes it sound as if the PM have something to hide and if he do believe that the emails that were laid out to us by Mr.Lennox Linton ( journalist) and I must say a very thoughtful one so if what he brought to our attetion why dont Tony as well as others within his party and within the government appoint a commission to investigate the evidents instead of saying to D”CIANS they are stupid whatever we tell you beieve us.
I listined to AARON regarding MR. why is mr james brining the church into this affair ? how is owenership of these villas affecting dominica? how many people in da own villas and hotels and bongalows? why have not these come into question? is anybody questioning what mr james ownes?. if these villas belongs to skerrit as mr james is claming what is the problem with that? doent the pm have a right to own property? if not then all mr james property should b taken from him.if my james has proof that these villas belong top mr skirrit and that he gain it through the wrong means then just bring out the proof and stop yr bullshitting. stop yr complaning and start to work. why point fingers at the pm and look at yrself. u go into the house and walkout and still get paid at the end of the month. is that not robbing the hard working people of dominica?is that diffrent from the person that goes out and rob somebody ? how is it u dont see that as affecting the country? come on mr james and prove to the people of dominica including me why we should vote u and yr bunch of clowns. give us reason to want to vote u if push comes to shove. we want top hear yr ideas for the develoupment of good dominica. stop talking about international airport the way u do and tell the people of da what the burden of an international airport will be and who will bear the cost. i use to pay $10 depature tax to live st martin b4 now all the charges included i now pay $55 us and it will soon be more ., the reason ? they have to make the money to meet the needs of the airport and who is paying for it we the citizens. let dominicans know that we will not be paying just $45 depature any more but mabe $100 – 150

Counting the Costs of Corruption in Dominica. Just a few points for all those who blindly condone corruption in HIGH PLACES and are so bold about it. It is so frightening. Dominica is in serious TROUBLE. WRONG IS RIGHT AND RIGHT IS WRONG these days?

In many economies, corruption is institutional and dealing with it on a daily basis seems more convenient than combating it. Looking at corruption as an economic issue means that corruption is more than simply a wrong behavior. It means that corruption, while benefiting a few individuals, is costly to society, the private sector, and governments in the long run. Corruption must be rooted out.

Corruption misallocates resources that could otherwise be used for provision of public services. Funds for licenses or tax income, instead of contributing to the budget, may simply end up in the pockets of corrupt government employees. Also, resources are not used most efficiently, as it is not the most efficient but, rather, the best-connected firm that gets a government contract.

In the systems that are corrupt, lawmakers will often generate policies and regulations that are not intended to improve overall economic or political environment. Rather, they benefit a few who are close to the decision makers or those who are bribing government officials to pass a favorable regulation.

Corruption has negative effects on the levels of both foreign and domestic investment. Investors will ultimately avoid environments where corruption is rampant because it increases the cost of doing business and undermines the rule of law. Corruption is also often associated with a high degree of uncertainty, something that always drives investors away.

Tax evasion, one of the biggest threats to government revenue flow, is widespread in corrupt countries because firms that are informal do not report their profits and subsequently do not pay taxes. Also, firms that operate in the formal economy will pay bribes instead of taxes when tax administration is corrupt or opportunities for abuse of the tax code are widespread. Moreover, corrupt government agents take for themselves fees and payments they collect from firms for the state budget, thus depriving government of funds needed to provide essential goods and services.

Public investment projects often offer opportunities for government officials to get bribes. Simply put, faced with the possibility to directly benefit from awarding contracts to cronies, government officials will promote as many public investment projects as possible. In fact, these scandals erupt not only in corrupt developing countries, but also in more developed nations. In many countries, it is sometimes the case that projects awarded to cronies are never finished as funds simply get stolen. Corruption also causes mismanagement of public investment projects and thus contributes to larger fiscal deficits, jeopardizing sound fiscal policy.

Time and money spent on bribing government officials and dealing with complex regulations increases the costs of doing business. These costs are either passed on to the consumers through increased prices or products of lower quality. Also, corrupt judicial systems limit the ability of business to enforce contracts, hindering normal operation and blocking new opportunities

Corruption hurts small enterprises because the high costs of corruption (time and money) are harder to sustain for smaller firms than for larger firms. Generally, small firms have less power to avoid corruption. Thus, in corrupt environments, it is harder for small businesses to survive, and this hurts an economy’s growth rate because small firms are the engine of growth in most economies.

By forcing business into the informal sector, creating barriers to entry, and increasing the costs of doing business, corruption essentially reduces private sector employment because firms are less likely to grow and expand.

Corruption lowers the income-earning potential of the poor because there are fewer private sector opportunities. Also, by limiting spending on public sector services, corruption facilitates inequality—it limits access to such essential resources as health care and education.

Corruption creates a culture where government officials are not held accountable for their actions. Also, in corrupt systems, laws and regulations on paper are not enforced consistently and fairly. Therefore, what matters is not the law but whom you know and how much you are willing to pay.

Countries have to build and develop institutions that provide the enforcement of laws and ensure a transparent and inclusive policy-making process. In corrupt systems, developing such sound and well-designed institutions is an arduous task. Corrupt government officials responsible for reforms are less likely to take measures that will directly limit their ability to personally benefit from bribes and kickbacks.

Corruption contributes to high crime rates
Corruption fosters a system with a high disregard for the rule of law and creates a society where legal, judicial, and enforcement institutions are ineffective. In corrupt systems, it is easy for crooks to buy their way out of punishment. Corruption not only leads to political and corporate crime, but it is also responsible for fostering organized crime.

Will, we as a people, ever unite?..We need to come together as one,for the benefit of ourselves, our children, and our Country…There are too many different divided voices….Are we really that confused?…Are we really, closely examining issues which affects us as a Nation, and are we really putting things into the proper perspectives?.

We need to think through issues.Public attention must be focus upon the gaping hiatus between what is,and what might be. In a democracy,we have a right to petition our Govt.;and we can do so in various ways, for instance, rallies and marches….And yes, we as citizens, and a People, have a right to ask questions about things and issues which affects us and our Country.
What we need to do, is to better organize and mobilize ourselves to better face the struggles and dificulties ahead…Education and accurate information are essential factors in our quest to indentify, understand, and resist propaganda….Be partial to none.
Fellow Dominicans, let us keep up the pursuit of Liberty, Justice and a Peaceful Nation…..Dominica!,we love you.

    All the best to you….and…

Performing the SAME act over and over and over again with no variation, expecting a different result each time but getting the SAME result each time is a sign of………….

INSANITY (Someone named Albert Einstein voiced this idea)

But then again, maybe if this issue is communicated enough people will change their minds and begin demanding the resignation of the current Prime Minster. As an outsider looking in, this is what seems to be the thought process of the group. Maybe the UWP party or Mr. Edison James (whichever) should consider boosting the influence of the party by changing its focus from “Let’s push DLP out then build ourselves UP” to “Let’s build ourselves UP then push DLP out.” Again, this is only if that is the aim of the UWP or Mr. Edison James.

So bottom line is to make some additions, subtractions or create a new mixture in order to produce a different result!!!!

    Just a thought or 2.

If someone goes to the Registrar of Lands and asks for information about ownership of this property, will he or she get it?

Edison James thinks that Dominicans forgot about his ownership of North-East Quarries Ltd (NEQ).

NEQ was set up to sell raw materials (Sand/Stone/Gravel) to the Government and People of Dominica for Airport construction. This business set up by Mr. & Mrs. James was done so at the time he became PM of Dominica. Mr James has never been known to be a man working in the area of these raw materials, but rather a farmer, banana farmer to be exact. Futhermore, Mr. James was leasing state owned lands to get these materials and sell it to the People and Government of Dominica. Well we know how that story ended……Magway Ca!

It would be like buying fig from a pardner who stole it from your garden.

That is a classic example of having your cake and eating it.

Well boy…somehow Mister lose the elecshuns and then things turn tight.

They (UWP) are suffering from SKERRIT-MYLITIS

I pray for a speedy recovery.

The day must come when every Dominican will know the true owner of the villas, and what a day it will be!…Since the issue will never go away,i suggest a Commission of Enquiry, but who is brave enough to launch it?…Mr James keep the fire burning…The guilty person must pay one day..

Why is this a problem? If Skerrit is clean – then let the light of truth shine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WE need TRANSPARENCY in GOVERNMENT

After reading to all those comments i can only conclude the norm in da is stealing and if you not doing you must be a donkey, those that not stealing aiding and supporting and hiding those that are even if they not benefiting so they can get their turn to. The most corverted people are those that can steal the most and get away with it. Our youth role model should be those that have plenty no matter how they get it. Now i hearing our elders sayingg if we want people to come out poor it ok to take someting on de side.

So want to be a celebrity in Dominica, it easy JUST STEAL, in da u safe

    October 20, 2010

We all know who owns the villas, so why all the perpetual discussion.
The registry has the owner on the deed and you can trace from there.
Or you can take it to court and have documents produced.
Dominicans talk too much and do nothing.

Shut up Edison. Doesn’t he have a farm to take care of?

    October 20, 2010

WHICH COUNTRY IS THE OWNERSHIP OF THE VILLAS AFFECTING? How does it affect ME????? Or any other DOMINICAN?? You are the politicians and is making political milage to what appears to me as a none issue for the electorates. They have voted the DLP with all the allegations that were circulating in December. The UWP has lost credibility because of the hacking into computers and the “doctoring” of E-mails. It is hard for the Dominica public at this time to take Lennox (a politician) Eddison and the rest of the mongoose gang seriously.

TJ and LL and EJ are just making fools of themselves! UWP have failed us big time….think and work on ways to win the next general election, but instead they are so focused on the PM that they are not even thinking of ways to boost and improve their party. this is just pure hatred for the PM, he has them like little puppets, he sends bait and they are so easy to catch..LMAO

    October 20, 2010

The fools that vote for you are worst than you. How ownership of villas affecting the country? You are the leader of an opposition party? Use you energy towards something more productive and stop this childish nonsense about villas and trash bins. This came up before election and the people still voted for the young man. I left Dominica 21 yrs ago and i travel to all the islands and i must say Dominica have improved and is ahead of some of the islands that were ahead of us for years. Try to find a way to break bread with the PM for the good of the nation. Talk like that was when we had one standpipe in the village and everyone would stand around gossiping about what the well off people have and did not have……those days are gone.

It is a questions asked by DNO some weeks ago….no answer your worship!

In reading the comments from those so called Dominicans: dkt, True Dominican, fed-upppppppppppp and all the rest I’m a bit taken aback.

It is interesting to listen to you all saying Mr. James, Lennox, Matt, Angelo, Arthie, and Mr. Clayton should stop talking. If it wasn’t for these same good citizens, and the constant talking about the Bin Boobol ie Bin Theft, the treasury would not have been refunded with all this money by extension allowing the same government to pay civil servants ect.

Putting all politics aside, Mr. James is simply talking for the good/betterment of Dominica.

    October 20, 2010

I say to Eddie and his follower, be patient. The ownership will be made public soon. Lennox is already beginning to sweat with his doctored emails from TJ. I will ask again, will TJ hang around with Lennox when the truth comes out? My guess is that he is already hiding under his bed with his computer. All I will say for now is that Lennox is simply a mad man, lol. People, just hang on for some very interesting news this week. It will make many re-think of Lennox’s motive.

You are a member of the christian council, the church you attend is a member of the cristian council, you are a leader of an organization in your church – does that mean you have also failed us in this regard, Mr. James? Just wanted to get the point clarified.

Eddie is right. the church is more interesting in offerings, the pastors spend more time looking at enriching themselves. thats one of the main reasons why we have all these crime taking place. they need to speak out.

But how many leaders UWP have nuh! Hector John opposition leader commented on the Cabon boat issue. Eddision James commenting on airport and villa issue, Ron Green commenting on Leanthia issue, wonder he didnt say she was bribed by skerrit as john said that carbon was bribed. This Party is too confusing.

Mr. James tell us about the hotel you owned in barbados, tell us about the catapillia, tructors, proclams that u orders to build the international airport. Tell us of the land you took from the farmers Mr James, tell us about the baby store u had in roseau, tell us about you big houses in St. Aroma and Marigot and the big house u have in Barbados. Tell Us Mr. James. Stop being a bloody hypocrite.
I recall Earl Willaims saying we know how to cover our tracks, is it because u could cover ur track that you own all these things.

  88. True Dominican
    October 20, 2010

The man said he’s not talking about the “Villa Issue” AGAIN!!! So take the silence! That’s not crippling the country!! James and his cronies are!! Right now people don’t even care if Skerrit owns the villas anymore. Start discussing things that really affect us! Enough with the Villas and Bin Bobol!!! Enough already!!

  89. dkt
    October 20, 2010

Mr. James, please do the people of dominica a favour and shut up! Stop commenting for commenting sake. Take about what u can do to help the people of Dominica. Who are u Mr. James
Mr. James tell us about the hotel you owned in Barbados, u didnt get it before u were in power, u got it while u were in power.

I listened to the villa story and i took it on my own to go out in some constituency to hear what people had to say about the villas. Suprisingly Mr. James, the people say they will still vote Skerrit and the villa is not an issue to them. I tried it in 5 constituencies and will continue to do so in another 3 next week before creole festival.

So this is a lession to Mr. James, Lennox, Matt, Angelo, Arthie, Clay and their other puppets who call the talk show every single day. This Villa issue is not a issue to manypeople. They do not care who owns the villas.

    GET OFF SKERRITS BACK PLEASE!
