James plans to meet with Melville Hall Estate residents

James

Parliamentary Representative for Marigot Edison James has planned a meeting carded for this weekend with Melville Hall Estate residents to plan a course of action.

James led a delegation to meet Housing Minister Reginald Austrie recently after government indicated that the people occupying homes at the Melville Hall Estate would have to vacate the area. The MP argued that the people had nowhere to go and that government did not provide an alternative.

He said when they attempted to meet with Austrie to discuss the matter, it did not go down well and there was no assurance that any steps were being taken to address the concerns of the people.

“We are meeting on Sunday at 4:30 with the people so we can decide what action they will take,” he said.

James said he wrote to the prime minister about the matter but he has yet to reply.

Dominican in the British Virgin Island, Totorla, I think your comment is without substance!

When James tell the people to pay the government for the land, I am assuming that you are saying that these people are squatting on public property. If I am correct, that makes the land, the property of the people of Dominica, and not the individual politicians in power at the moment.

Whereas, the land they squat on may belong to the nation, and the use of such property must be paid for; the same as you advised James, to tell the people to pay the government for the land that they have squatted on for all these years, because they have no other place to live.

You need to advised our government, also to do what is fair, and pay all the people in Dominica, including Fenton Telemaque, who’s land was taken away, in the name of public domain, and although he was award a settlement for his land, he has yet to receive a single cent of the money owed to him.

There are other examples which I can bring to your attention, but too much politics will be involved, so I’ll let that slide.

Nonetheless, the government must set an example, by abiding by the laws of the country. In that when a court, or an arbitration rules on a matter, the government is not above the law, therefore the government must respect, and honor any, and all rulings handed down by our judicial system.

The government breaking the laws, of the land is not a good example for the citizens of the country.

When the government, refuses to uphold, the laws of the land by not paying the debt the government owes to its citizens, what do we expect from the people of the country?

They will not pay their debts also!

I support the DLP, nonetheless, I cannot condone the idea, nor I understand why they are so reluctant to accept the ruling of the court’s in our country.

The government is not above the law’s of Dominica!

The issue should be addressed by the government. The people have been there for many years.
Please don’t turn this into a political brawl. There are many communities in Dominica such as Highland Grand bay, Yam Piece stock Farm where people sqatted for years. The government worked with the people and regularized the issue. Mr. minister do the right thing show Dominicans that you can rise above partisanship and work with the pal rep to help those people.

people think government should do everything for them. why should the government do anything for you when u dont even want to pay taxes. where would the government get the money to do the things that its suppose to do.
might point is we like FREE stuff to much and never consider or think where the monies are coming from. its like a wife constantly harassing her husband for stuff and she is not doing anything to help the situation.
Opposition parties are like jealous family who want what u have and cant just be happy for you and help you do better. we all going to benefit if we all just come together and put or country first

  8. Discrimination?
    January 6, 2011

Any Political party in power, in Govt. has the responsibility to do the right things on behalf of all Dominicans. The DLP Govt. is boasting about housing revolution. Some squatters on Govt. lands have been regularized. Some were offered $1 dollar per sq. ft on lands they occupied. So why the discrimination against a group of Dominicans by Dominicans?

The residents of Melville Hall Estate are Dominicans too. Why should Govt. not try to solve the problem they are facing re. housing, in an amicable way. To those cohorts and wicked persons who are as selfish as selfish itself, why are you all not giving support to your fellow Dominicans as yourselves.

The foreigners come to Dominica, get anything they want, especially if they have friends in high places. Some have made millions of dollars from Dominican assets, none of you persons have yet to say anything. For example, Foreigners have been involved in selling Dominican passports, amassed millions, fooled the Dominican people about building a Layou River Hotel. Years upon years have passed, no hotel, no $$$$$$$ back to our Treasury. Some of you even support those persons who have done that to Dominica and its people.

Don’t you all have a conscience? Today you all are not willing to see the residents get their fair share or be treated in good faith. Why are some of you all behaving, speaking, acting with such hearts of stone? Aren’t you all human wishing to see other human beings like yourselves live a happy life being properly housed in their place of birth? Why should such wickedness reign in our blessed land. Just one week after most proclaimed a time of peace and joy, praising the creator for his goodness and mercy, such devilish words are being spewed about people who reserve the right to housing their families.

Wouldn’t proper housing help to bring peace of mind to all the families residing on the Melville Hall Estate. As Dominicans, don’t they need roofs over their heads too. It is the beginning of a New Year and already persons are continuing with their HEARTLESS pronouncements. It is totally INHUMAN, not to support the residents of Melville Hall estate in their predicament. The issue cannot be about Edison James. The burning issue is housing for the innocent residents and quickly finding a way to effectively allow the many families to have PEACE OF MIND by solving their HOUSING NEEDS.

I support you 100%. The length we go just to protect our political party. Until we start putting our country before party we are doomed. It is obvious that the government is treating these people like the red head bastard. After all these people are Dominicans.

But why Edison must Incite people to riot so? eh? The minister responsible for lands was heard on national radio advising the affected persons to go to the lands division where the letter came from and they together with the government will seek to address the problem.you talking about meeting with people to decide what to do? Advise the persons to take their letters and visit the lands division like the minister suggested. and then if all else fails you will have a meeting to decide further….Why do these so called politicians like to play on the emotions of people? You brought people to go up Govt headquarters to see the minister. 38 persons and you did not think it right or decent to at least inform the minister that you were bringing a delegation with you to see him? And when the minister refused to see the people out of common protocol and decency? you belly ache….The strategy of the UWP i am very sorry to say is one to try in instil fear in persons and cause civil disobedience we should all remember when this type of behaviour started. when they blocked pagua to try to create bloodsheed….. This and many more reasons, but this chiefly is why you sir can never rise to the second highest office in our land ever again…….

So to make your sour point you had to lie on the number of people who were at the meeting. It was 19 sacre sot. If you were from Marigot you would never say those foolish things or maybe you living in some auntie or uncle house. For you to say that the people should be regularised like all other areas you talking a whole set of crap. What happen all Marigot people not very smart again. I am sure when Mr James mother made him she never dreamt he would reach the office of PM. Can the same be said of you? Do you have anybody in your family that can reach so far? Well wait the same set of people you siding will shoot who you put down.

I consider the squatters village at Melville Hall an eyesore of badly built, structures in disarray, randomly placed with no regulation. I can only imagine what my friends -visitors to the island thought when they confronted this illegal jig saw puzzle of shanty towns representive of poverty.
First the squatters KNOW that they are illegal. They just got wood sand and concrete and against the standards of The Housing Comission built badly designed structures with a total disregard to codes and standards. This has NOTHING to do with government and politics. I am from Marigot, and I cannot stand to see the area we used to know as Camp. I heard the sob story of Pity and Go a family who has lived there for over 25 years, yes I agree those individuals need some consideration and help with relocation but you want to tell me a certain ex Mrs. Charles needs help from government to relocate when she knowingly put down her concrete and board there illegaly! mag way sa, Mr. james is wasting his time, Government will give NO assistance to healthy men and women who break the law and then have politicians using them to get airtime. The squatters village is illegal and that is the bottom line! I envision a lovely built hotel, motel, guest house, supermarket, villas, restaurant, in the exact location. I mean that is prime real estate
and illegal squatters must have the last say. Hell NO! Let them relocate at their exepense especially the johnnys come lately, and find legal land to build on. STOP the pity party. All you try something but accept it doh work! This cannot be compared with the Castle Bruce folks, apples and oranges.

Government did not ask for payment. In fact many of the people have suggested and are hoping that Government will allow them to PAY for the land.
Also Government gave many permission to be on the land with the promise of being regularized.
