James rejects Savarin’s statement on Barbados gun arrest

UWP political leader Edison James

Political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Edison James, has rejected a statement by Minister of National Security, Charles Savarin, concerning a man who was traveling to Dominica and was arrested in Barbados with a gun in his luggage.

James described the statement as “mumbo jumbo,” “disrespectful to Dominicans,” and “disingenuous.”

In a statement released on Thursday, Savarin indicated that Malachi Maliki Haile Mugabe was traveling to Dominica to pick up his five-year-old son when he was arrested. He also indicated that the police in Dominica have no reports of criminal activities by Mugabe.

Since the story broke there has been a firestorm of speculation and concerns were raised by many in Dominica that Mugabe may have had sinister motives for his ‘visit’ to the island. James was one of the most prominent persons who had called on Savarin to urgently address the nation on the matter.

In an interview with Dominica News Online on Friday James indicated he was not satisfied with Savarin’s statement. “What we have here from Mr. Savarin after this extended period of time is a most garbled, jumbled up, mumbo jumbo comment,” he stressed. “It is disrespectful to Dominicans.”

According to James, Mugabe could have been traveling anywhere and he would not have attracted the attention of Dominicans. “What is significant, what is salient, what is most important in this matter is that the man was coming to Dominica and he was found to be in possession of a gun and 59 rounds of ammunition concealed in a false section of his luggage,” he pointed out. “That is the important thing.”

He lamented that this crucial aspect of the matter was not addressed by Savarin. “He has mentioned nothing about this aspect of the case which is of importance to Dominica and the region,” James remarked. “It is really disingenuous.”

The UWP political leader also noted that Savarin’s statement, instead of helping, has actually made it worse for Dominicans who have expressed concern over the entire matter.

Mugabe was arrested on Sunday, December 16, when he arrived in Barbados by air from Trinidad. Reports indicate that he was on his way to Dominica. Customs discovered the gun and ammunition in a false bottom of Mugabe’s luggage while it was being scanned.

He was charged with a number of firearms-related offences and  was remanded in custody.

He is expected to appear in court on January 14, 2013.

It is truly interesting the way politicians behave! The security minister should have done his homework better than that and made a much more comprehensive statement; nontheless, we should not forget that some years ago the very Mr. James (as Prime Minister),was willing to have an individual by the name of Al Masari come live in Dominica when the British did not want him there for security reasons. Now, which of these two gentlemen could/would have caused more damage to this land? Your guess is as good as mine!!

@ Soul Sista…none of them think for me. The rule of law tells me that the man was caught in Barbados and the Bajan law will handle him. Out of courtesy, the Bajan authorities may give a general summary of the details to our local authorities. So why are we demanding the nitty gritty information that only the investigating officers would know and are saving for the court of law? I am not a politician neither do i sleep with one. Im just saying that we must be reasonable when we make certain demands because we live in a world which is governed by law and due process.

having read these comments, it’s not hard to know how foolish, myopic and politically brainwashed these people are. They are so dumb that they take everything for granted. This man was caught with a firearm and several rounds of ammunition with a petty excuse about picking up his son and Dominicans together with Mr Savarin bought that? Shame on these bunch of stupid labourites. Instead of filling in these senseless comments, Go read and educate your minds. Get some wisdom. There are so many unsolved murders in Dominica. This man could be a hit man that just happened to get caught. This weapon was concealed. Who knows what mission was he on? This is sinister. Dominicans need to wake up, be practical and stop their politics. Maybe we will achieve more as a people.

Eh las, The one/most popular degree held by Dominicans is “Assiology”. I read a number of these comments and I wonder how people in Dominica think. Mr James asked for Saverin to comment on the incident and Saverin spoke a bunch of mumbo jumbo. I am not political, and I believe the statement made by Saverin is pure crap. Saverin is ‘supposed’ to be the minister of National Security and if he cannot assure us that we are safe in Dominica, what better can we expect from such a character…nothing!!
It is long overdue…..these jokers should be sent packing once and for all before we have another coup…and this time, Saverin will be on the other side.

I do not understand why Dominicans are arguing with each other over this issue. Mr James is a member of the Opposition. What is an Opposition supposed to do? That is their job. If you want a ONE PARTY state then say so. If not, let the politicians do their job. I read the article in question and was also baffled by the minister’s reasons given for the man’s actions. If that is what he was told, he should have thought twice before repeating it.

Edo seem to have the ‘UNCLE TOM’ mentality of ‘Extra-Rendition’, a policy widely used as part of USA foreign policy. The big difference there, is the Trillions of $$$ that the USA is able to use to run organisations like the CIA to enable them to conduct such policies. In the case of small impoverished islands like DA and other Caribbean countries, We have to rely on each others security
services to intercept dodgy passengers carrying weapons for what ever purposes, for the security of our own citizens. The fact that this individual was intercepted in Barbados and is a citizen of St. Kitts, bears no responsibility on our Security minister to know what his intentions were, even if he was planning to travel to Dominica. I’m sure that there are many instances where people slip under the radar with weapons or drugs and pose no real security threats to Dominicans or other Caribbean nationals just because they are in possession of a weapon.
Mr James should get real and let the authorities in Barbados and St.kitts deal with this matter and obviously inform our security services of what ever outcome.
Stop being a ‘dumb’ politician, Edo! There are more important issues affecting Dominicans that Mr James should be addressing.

Although I understand the context within which you write, I must tell you that I disagree with your conclusion. It is the business of the Minister of Security to know the reason this man was coming to DA so he can be better prepared in the future, to protect our citizens. Savarin is not psychic and cannot decipher the man’s plan, but he should send a team to Barbados to interview this person, and he should then report this and any ‘non compromising’ findings to Dominicans.

We all know James is playing politics as he should – the foundation of any democratic process; however, he is correct that Savarin did not provide us with sufficient information to alleviate our concerns about what is being done to protect us from future attempts like this.

so u dont consider a potential hit man heading to Dominica to take out a potential target and important issue for Dominicans??? If the report above read about the death of another one of our citizens in unexplained cricumstances, you would probably be the first to complain about the security services not doing enough – how can u possibly say that someone with a weapon poses no real threat, u mad??? u unaware of what weapons are used for? If someone is travelling with one, its either to use, or to supply to someone else to use, there is no other reason to travel with one!

Is the suspect a Dominican citizen?
    Was he arrested in Dominica?
Did he commit any acts of illegality in Dominica?
Are we spending too much time and negative energy speculating as to what might have happened, had he not been caught in Barbados and allowed to move on to Melville Hall Regional Airport?

What is clearly of importance here is the fact that government must now invest in and install high quality x-ray machines at the arrival hall in order to check ALL incoming luggage.

Why are we Dominican’s so naive and stupid? is it that you all so hate mr. James that anything he says is wrong? let’s put politics aside just for now. Are you really satisfied with what Mr. savarin said? Folks, this is a man coming to Dominica with a gun and 59 rounds of ammunition in a false buttom. To hear the minister of security tell the nation that this heavily armed guy has a 5yr old son in Dominica and was probably coming to get him leaves me with lots of questions. In fact Savarin, as minister of national security, did not reveal his source. How can I blame Mr. James for raising the concerns he raised? Only political fools would accept Savarin’s statement and therefore anyone who accepts it is a pure blind FOOL even if educated.

Of course there is an outcry and concern how can yo say there isnt’t? One of the main discussion points in DA today is escalating crime and drug use. It just so happens this incident reached the news and as you can see much reaction.

so DNO didn’t post my earlier comment probably cause of too much expletives and slang… so let me put it in “english”.. Dominicans I believe are the most hypocritical people in the Caribbean if not the world. You know who the drug dealers in the country are, they live next to you.. You know who has guns in the country, your sons probably have one now under the dresser you dare not look in cause you are in disbelief. you know who sells drugs, your kids are involved so you try to shield it… why are you people complaining about a man most if not all of you know nothing about? yes I understand your concern about the issue but if this was not brought to you attention, if the Bajans kept silent about it you would have never known and your “meaningless” lives would have continued…. HI HI, somebody needs to clear me out on this matter, because i am suggesting that mr. saverin is saying exactly what the barbadian police told him after questioning the guy, because it is not said that mr saverin knows the fellar nor his intentions, so how the heck can someone expect him to give the reason why the guy had a gun and ammunitions? big men can be soo ignorant and behave childlike, and what is more disturbing is that these same people were once leaders and still want to be leaders of the country, this is crazy stuff here, i am not saying that the guy did not have other reasons than what he gave but why would saverin know? something is definitely wrong with these people trust me.

So then Savarin should say as such. He should acknowdledge that THE key issue here, why the guy was carrying a concealed gun and ammmunition, has still not been answered but they are still in hot pursuit of the answer. But, according to what I read here on DNO, Savarin has made no mention at all of the gun. None. In fact, again by what I have read, Savarin has painted the guy like a little old sunday school tescher dad, picking up his kid. HELLO! the man was travelling to our country with a gun and ammunition HIDDEN yet no mention of such fact??? Really????

Can you imagine if after 9/11 the offical statement from the White House was:

These guys, their real names are xyz and were born in such country and they were stuyding to be pilots in such and such school in Miami and they have no past police records (which they didnt). THE END.

Let’s ponder that scenario for a moment shall we?

The Hon.Edison James has not surprised me with his reaction to the statement given by the Minister of Security Hon.Charles Savarin. This is typical Edison, great at manipulating public discussion for his personal gratification. What next a call for an inquiry.

When a country is weakened and exhausted by battling controversies and the needs are never satisfied and desires never fulfilled that population is vulnerable to manipulation as seen from the comments regarding this incident and the many preceding controversies which has occurred after the lost of the UWP in the last General Elections. The focus on rebuilding the Country coming forward with a better alternative to defeat the DLP is not their agenda but rather a focus on getting in power through chaos and creating controversies it is an exercise that is hugely time-consuming, absorbing and debilitating. The UWP believe that by creating such conditions they will be the next elected Government and their rule is guaranteed.

When Edison said quote “Since the story broke there has been a firestorm of speculation and concerns were raised by many in Dominica that Mugabe may have had sinister motives for his ‘visit’ to the island” Please note the word sinister used by Edison, that is Edison at his best, word play. What we all forget is, this Man Mugabe will have his day in Court. He alone knows
the motive for having a gun hidden in his luggage so why all that speculation. Whatever speculation exists it is inflamed by mystery, suspicion and secrecy.Hard and exact facts will cool it.

“Where as other Caribbean states might have a fiscal deficit of seven to eight per cent of GDP (Gross Domestic Product), we are climbing up to 10 per cent. That’s a warning sign so we have really got to ensure that we bring it under some degree of control, and resolve those differences.

If he stupid enough to lie about a matter being deal with by an independent party, meaning the bdos authorities, then he is an idiot and Dominicans will deal with him. “What is significant, what is salient, what is most important in this matter is that the man was coming to Dominica and he was found to be in possession of a gun and 59 rounds of ammunition concealed in a false section of his luggage,” he pointed out. “That is the important thing.

By his very pronoucements, it would seem that Mr. James knows more about the man’s intention in Dominica than what the Hon. Minister is saying to us. Mr. James is already on the record calling for a full statement by the Minister on the issue. At the time he did not tell the people whether he was aware that the Minister had sufficient information on the matter like he seemingly has. The minister I supposed waited out his time got some information from an external jurisdiction and made a statement. Mr. James is now disappointed. A reasonable person would therefore conclude that Mr. James knows much more about the matter than Mr. Savarin and that such information points to a plot to break down the national security apparatus in Dominica. If that is not the case then why the big hooplaa about the Minister not asddressing the very important issue?

It has to be of concern to all that a foreigner was caught enroute to Dominbica with a concealed weapon and ammunition. The other big question, which always arises when certain sized drug busts are made here. Was the drugs meant for Dominica or was it meant for somewhere else? Can the same question be asked about this firearm and ammunition Mr. James? Had the gentleman landed in Dominica with the illegal weapon and ammunition, and caught then there are adequate provisions in law to deal with him.

The truth is our leaders (government or opposition) has to act responsibly. Mr. James you keep making noises, so that your voice is heard. Alas, the people who matters are not listening to you. See your several attempts to “put boots” on the ground. How long did it take after your last attempt in this dregard to hear your voice on radio again? When will you ever get that fact right. You have served your time. The people entrusted you – placed you on stage with the full backing of the constitution to make your policy work. Remember what happened? You screwed it up. Free up Spaggs, make way for Lennox and enjoy the fruits of your hard work – you have contributed, no one can deny that. Of late your contribution is mired in hate and illusionary thinking.

you are so mistaken and misguided, master degree has nothing to do with pure and simple common sense, or the abilty to reason. Most of the world biggest fools are well educated people. They believe in their own abilties, their education, to try and reason out everything, believing that they know everything, when they are far from reality. ‘the fool says in his heart their is no God’ they say we came from monkey, the world was created by a big bang, there is no life after death, etc. As a matter of fact educated people are the most selfish ,and one sided people you can meet, full of arogance ,and thinks what they know is always the truth. Between MR. James and Mr. Savarin who would you conclude spoke the most rubbish? You guys need to think for yourself, not allowing Mr. James nor Mr. Savarin to be your sense of reason. As a Dominican, I would be nervous with the explanation given by the minister of Security, even if I wanted to dismiss Mr. James.

      • And
        January 5, 2013

@ Soul Sista…none of them think for me. The rule of law tells me that the man was caught in Barbados and the Bajan law will handle him. Out of courtesy, the Bajan authorities may give a general summary of the details to our local authorities. So why are we demanding the nitty gritty information that only the investigating officers would know? I am not a politician neither do i sleep with one. Im just saying that we must be reasonable when we make certain demands because we live in a world which is governed by law and process.

In an earlier blogg, i categorically stated/that i refuse to believed anything that i read on this release by Savarin. Despite the fact that he and his ilks are treating some Dominicans like they are part of a colony of clowns, there are those among us who are mentally sound and can distinguish fact from fiction, truths from untruths, and those who are vacillating.
Under pressure, Savarin has exposed the religious tenet that we were raised in “Thou Shall not LIe”…The superficial and obscured statement leaves many unanswered questions Sir. Remember you are this failed state Minister of National Security! Domninicans who have opposing views fronm what the cabal is promulgating, and other like minded Dominicans have reasons to be uneasy. We are still remembering what happened to GON EMMANUEL on 25/12/2010 and the cabal has not shown any interest in giving justice to this man. We know we have had killing(s) by people who seem to be professional killers and the murderer(s) has (have) escaped,we know that the cabal is tormented by those who show dissent by exposing the way in which the country’s affairs are mismanaged,We know of statements like NO Law NO Constitution Can Stop Me.
We need answers like, where the man was visiting on island, how many visits has he made to Dominica,Who died or mysteriously disappeared during this time those visits were made, whether the home or people he was visiting has had any brush(es) with the law,and many more Mr Savarin.
We are living in a different Dominica these days,so patriots of this land has to be concerned with their safety Sir.
Who knows if this man was not the last to arrive here, and maybe, Just maybe he has others like him on island already. IN THE ABSENCE OF ANSWERS WE MUST SPECULATE.
This garbled statement by Savarin was an insult really.

Does the typical parent travel with concealed weapons to pick up their children?

Anyway, if the man is innocent, all well and good but WHY was he travelling with a gun and ammunition. Thats the million dollar question here that Savarin is yet to answer.

Mr. James is so right! I agree with him 100%. We need a reason for the gun and being head of the country’s security, for Savarin to feel just fine that a man supposedly travelling to pick up his child was caught with concealed weapons and ammunition is mind boggling!

Do you actually believe that there is anyone in the Caribbean who believes that the man’s intentions were noble? Surely, you do not think that Mr. Savarin believes the guy’s explanation, do you?

The man was caught, the responsible authorities in the Caribbean interrogated him and did their investigation and they reported on what was said and discovered. NOWHERE does anyone indicate that the explanation given by the man is truthful. In fact, the investigation continues and the details will come out in the court case. Mr. Savarin has merely reported on the current findings of the investigation. Of course, i am sure you already know this.

      Let common sense prevail.

      • Anonymous

Common sense does prevail. It is common sense that an issue which has caused such heated discussion and even fear about DA and escalating crime, that as the head of security for the country, Savarin be far more verbal and clear on his stance.

For example he could have included, if his objective was to reassure his people that he is on top of it, something like – We are very pleased with the cooperation of the Barbados authorities and their investigations thus far, have been carried out in a most exemplary manner. There are still some major concerns mainly why, if he was simply picking up his child, was he carrying a concealed weapon. As we are actively trying to crack down on illegal arms in Dominica, we are alarmed with this vistor coming to our country with hidden weapons. We have a zero tolerance approach for such crimes. Police investigation continues along with the Barbaods authorities and we will keep the public up to date on findings –

You know. Something like that

    Reasoning with Edison James.

Eddo lawlessness rules our nation. Dem fellas raise immorality to a higher moral plane than morality. The rich and powerful are subject to different laws than the rest of us. , whereas the income tax prosecutes little people for tax evasion.
Cicero rightly said, “The more laws, the less justice.”
The majority of Dominicans are slaves not freemen, servants” of whatever we submit ourselves to obey, and we obey sin, then we can’t really call ourselves “free,” can we?
Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)
Lavrentiy Beria and the Soviet KGB understood long decades ago that it is easy to overthrow a nation once they have become immoral. First sap and undermine morality, and then the nation easily falls. But then, the Assyrians, too, already knew
that tactic and practiced it, as did the British forcing opium on China in the 19th century, and the Japanese pushing heroin on China in the 1930s.
Truth is, “Obedience to the law is liberty.” There can be no liberty save “ordered liberty,” because without morality there is no liberty, only slavery to whatever lust moves us at the moment.

      January 4, 2013

I am still very baffled by Savarin calling him “gentleman”. If this were to be extracted and taken into isolation you will find that there is much more behind it which lead to the kind adjective. It is almost as if Mr. savarin wants to protect the image of the guy. In all his ramblings, he could have said the man, or Mr. Mugabe but he chose to include an adjective which distract from the negative connotations to the man

      • Aye Dominique
        January 4, 2013

You are right on the ball. There seems to be much more to this story, the guy is remanded to be tried, but Savarin has already tried the case and found him innocent. According to Savarin, the guy had no bad intentions. The only thing he did not clearly say is that the Bajans made a mistake by arresting the guy and they should release him, but make no mistake about it, this was clearly implied in his statement.

It would be interesting to see the outcome of this case.

I pray that Edison continues to press on with this matter, we have a right to know.
