KNOW YOUR CANDIDATES: The Roseau North Constituency

roseau north consittuency
Julius Timothy (DLP) and Danny Lugay (UWP)

EDITOR’S NOTE: In the run up to the general election, Dominica News Online will be publishing a brief profile or biography of each candidate from the two political political parties contesting the poll. The publications will be done in a random order. The material was provided by the both the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the United Workers Party (UWP)

Danny Lugay (UWP)

As a Christian, my duty is to serve my Constituency and my Country without fear or favor. I became a senator in 2011, and will contest the Roseau North Constituency seat to become Parliamentary Representative in the upcoming General Election

I have always been active in promoting community efforts, especially in regards to sports development and community recreation. I played on the Dominica national football team in 1978 and 1985. I then received training as a rural communications specialist, and worked as the communications manager of Dominica Banana Produces Ltd. and director of DAPEX. I served on the Roseau City Council beginning in 1996 until today, and continue to stand for democratic rights and principals, many of which have been eroded over the past ten years.

As Member of Parliament for Roseau North, I, along with Team Dominica, intend to create a more vibrant economy for the many residents struggling to make ends meet. I also aim to provide more opportunities to develop the talents of our young men and women bursting with potential that can be harnessed for the betterment of the constituency and country.

Top four priorities:
-Housing and appartment expansion
-Upgrade of fishing facilities
-Upgrade of existing playing fields
-Rehabilitation of roads, drains, sidewalks

Julius Timothy (DLP)

I want to thank each and every one of you for allowing me the privilege of representing you during the last Parliamentary term. The Dominica Labour Party Government continues to make great strides in the development of our country and in the investment in our people and I am proud to have been a part of that team.

It will soon be time for you to choose a new Government and you must look to the future and determine who is best placed to provide the opportunities that you and your
family need to progress.

I know that if you had to judge the Government solely on our past record that you would have no trouble in choosing us again, but you must also examine our plans for the future.

Are they sound? Are they achievable? Will they take you and your family forward?

Here in this constituency I have solid and exciting plans which will accelerate your journey to progress and the Dominica Labour Party’s focus in the next term
will be on providing the opportunities for Dominicans to create and build wealth for themselves.

In sports and recreation we are going to build an indoor sports arena for volleyball, basketball, and netball in Stockfarm, and it is my intention to make it a multi-purpose facility for cultural events.

I am also going to lobby for relocation of the prison so that the land there can be incorporated as part of a larger sporting development of the area to include a 400-meter running track.

Negotiations are ongoing for a 120-room hotel next to the Aid Bank, which will provide employment and economic activity in the constituency and provide opportunities to residents offering goods and services to the hotel and its guests.

Of course we are going to build a new hospital on the existing site of the Princess Margaret Hospital, which will benefit our residents as well as the entire country.

There will be employment opportunities during the construction stage and opportunities in the medical field will open up for those of you trained in this area.

I am going to push for rebuilding of the Goodwill Secondary School and refurbishment of the playing field so that our young people can continue to benefit from a fine education.

All of the strong social programmes that provide housing and care for our seniors, education scholarships for our young and employment though the national programme will continue, but I am most excited by the new thrust towards the fostering of a new small business class by providing constituents with start up capital and business advice.

This programme can be a life changer for so many of you who have the desire to own your own businesses. I hope that you seize the opportunity with both hands.

I am asking you for your vote so that together we can continue to build a community of which you can be proud and to give yourselves the opportunity to benefit from the programmes of a new Dominica Labour Party Government.

A vote for Julius Timothy is a vote for progressive and caring representation.

In keeping with my fair and unbiased analysis of all the candidates contesting the December 8th general election and again, not taking colors into consideration (red, blue, green, whatever), here are my analysis of the two candidates for the Roseau North Constituency as profiled by DNO.

I am trying to be very objective but from a personal standpoint, I must admit that this one is extremely difficult for me, in that I know Tim-Tim. Ladies and Gentlemen, when I say that I know Tim-Tim, I know him, and that goes way back pre-his political days. It is a fact that all of us have our shortcomings in life and Tim-Tim certainly does, but on the other hand, he is and can be a very nice, passionate and caring person. At least, he was that person prior to entering into politics but sadly he has changed since. In addition to that, he has made some wrong move/decisions in my opinion, but perhaps those were best fitted for his own situation and ambitious endeavor so I should not hold that too strongly against him. We all have made and will continue to make decisions that will best suit our individual needs and goals in life – and we should.

Having gotten that out of the way, I am again, extremely disappointed in the DLP’s candidates profile as I know that Tim-Tim have credentials but no mention are made of them nor has his political achievements or lack thereof, been highlighted in his profile. Likewise, Mr. Lugay’s profile lacks educational references and only focused on his work history whereas, Tim-Tim profiles lacks his work history. Given these observations, I am compelled to ask just two questions: is that because the DLP are so confident that they will win the general election that they are not putting much time into their profiles, or, is it an unfair balance of the profile templates. I can’t understand how some candidates’ profiles are so consistent and others are not and the poor profiles generally are that of the DLP. I would like to see consistency with the profiles, if there is an educational portion of the template then let everyone address that as well (whether they are educated or not}. I see no educational references for both candidates and Tim-Tim being a businessman that he is, he is quite aware that if someone comes to him seeking employment with a bio/resume like that he would not even consider them for an interview. Therefore, I have a very hard time comprehending if Tim-Tim or the DLP are really penning these ridiculous bio/profiles, and if they are, they need to step up.

In conclusion, I am not going to make a pick based on the published profiles. In my view, both bio/profiles are not consistent and on that basis a thumbs up or down are withheld.

    God bless Dominica.

It is a fact that all of us have our shortcomings in life and Tim-Tim certainly does have some LONG comings, not taking care of ur child is a LOng coming moreso when the child’s health is burdensome why leave it to ur wife who U are separated from. They visisting DA for months and you are yet to visit and you are in walking distance. Vermins Runaround men who behave like U.How did you become a Minister of Gov’t x2 parties? Something is more than wrong with the average D/can. You left one corrupt party to join another. That says a lot about Character. Do us a favor and just >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> alone but on the other hand, he is and can be a very nice, passion person and an exploiter. Danny said some people need to be taken out in DA this is one and ur opportunity to beat him Danny take him out once and for all.

There’s no where in the world Danny would’ve able to run for election, is no way you a make a life threatening statement on a person and gets to stay in the political race. It is alleged that you drove around in an uninsured vehicle for years and ended up in an accident, if this was the states that would be another case of how reckless you are as someone who should do everything in your power to uphold the law. To me you should only get two votes.

I commend the efforts by DNO to educate us voters on who the candidates actually are but their efforts will be in vain if the present fraudulent activities in this election continues without being stopped. The will of the people is being stifled through the acts of bribery, and importing of voters.

I appeal to right thinking people out there to do their part in prevent election fraud this time around. If you know something. SAY SOMETHING DO SOMETHING. Go through the electors list in your respective constituencies and report all those who don’t belong.

DNO people don’t just like my comment DO SOMETHING JOIN THE FIGHT

  22. Its my damn business
    November 27, 2014

It brings tears to my eyes and heart when I see how low the reputation of my friend has gone throughout Dominica but especially in Roseau North, the last 3 years. No one seems to have any respect for my friend to even call him mister Timothy. The man’s popularity in the constituency is like that of a once prominent person who got involved in crack and becomes a thief. That hurts me!. Roseau North has never been in love with the Skerrit brand of dlp but because of the good reputation my friend earned under the UWP, we voted him. But now things a so bad with him that Skerrit had to come and cry to voters for Tim. Oh that hurts cause he is my friend! Lugay ALL THE WAY!!! The way things are looking I hope Timothy does not lose his deposit.
