KNOW YOUR CANDIDATES: The Wesley Constituency

wesley constituency
Ezekiel Bazil and Athenia Benjamin

EDITOR’S NOTE: In the run up to the general election, Dominica News Online will be publishing a brief profile or biography of each candidate from the two political political parties contesting the poll. The publications will be done in a random order. The material was provided by the both the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the United Workers Party (UWP).

Athenia Benjamin (DLP)

I am offering myself to you as your Parliamentary Representative in the upcoming General Election to continue the fine tradition of representation by the Dominica Labour Party in the constituency of Wesley.

I feel as if the Wesley constituency is a part of me as I am a part of the Wesley constituency. There is nowhere on earth closer to my heart. So strong is my love for my community that I named my only son Wesley.

As a trained community worker, I see the representation of my brothers and sisters in the Wesley constituency as the next step in what has been a life built around service.

I have gained valuable experience working in the Young Offenders and Family Court in Toronto where I supported the victims of violent crime and other vulnerable persons through the Court system.

The ability to work with people from all backgrounds taught me the value of team work, patience, confidentiality, respect for the views and fears of others, how to deal with Government and how to interface with the media. These are some of the skills I will bring to representing you, in addition to the ability to listen and assist people in what is often their darkest hour.

I will work hard to rejuvenate the agricultural base of Wesley and Woodford Hill and push to recover the prime lands acquired by the previous government for the international airport that never got off the ground.

Housing is also one of the areas that will receive my urgent attention. I will create a priority list to ensure that those most in need are taken care of first.

My pledge to you is representation that is personal, vibrant, forward thinking and all-inclusive. No one will be left out or left behind.

I humbly ask you to vote for me, Athenia Benjamin so that with God’s grace I can ensure that our community continues to grow and prosper.

Some plans:

Work with Central Government on the provision of agricultural lands to existing and new farmers for the cultivation of agricultural produce

Provision of long-term employment.

Working with Central Government to access new /more markets for agricultural produce

Maintain a close working relationship with all existing farmers groups.

Completion of the Woodfordhill Main Road

Completion of the Ten Shilling Road

Ezekiel Bazil (UWP)

I have willingly embraced the opportunity to serve my constituency by heeding their call to stand as candidate for minister of parliament of the Wesley constituency.

Growing up in the village of Wesley, I attended the Wesley Government School, the Dominica Grammar school and subsequent the St. Andrews Secondary school, where I completed my secondary education.

I hold a degree in property and casualty claims adjusting from the American Institute for CPCU/ Insurance Institute of America, and diplomas from Crawford Learning and Resource Center in Atlanta Georgia in the field of liability claims adjusting and in automobile appraisal. I also hold certificates in fire surveying and claims condition as well as motor claims management from the St Lucia Insurance Institute.

My career has included working as an agricultural extension officer for the Wesley/ Woodford Hill district with the North East agricultural program before gaining employment with American Life Insurance Company and Life of Barbados as a life underwriter. I went on as manager of DOM waters in Antigua, and was later employed as supervisor at Insurance Consultants Ltd agents for American Home Insurance Co. Nemwil and Barbados Fire and General.

I was appointed managing director for Mc Breadston Foods (Perkys) and is now a director of The Resource Management Service and the claims manager of First Domestic Insurance Company Ltd. I have served as general secretary to the Tipper Truckers Association of Dominica and was involved in a number of groups at the Wesley Catholic Church and the St Andrews High School. I also chaired the General Insurance Institute of Dominica, which brought the largest group of underwriters for a conference of the Caribbean, to the shores of Dominica.

I embrace any opportunity to care for others, which is what fuels my commitment to restoring the pride and respect which the people of Wesley and Woodford Hill once cherished.

Four top priorities
Revitalization of the agricultural sector
Jobs- employment generation
Farm access road construction
Fisheries development

so Ms. Benjamin, after you complete the roads and negotiate for lands for the current and new farmers how will their lives be improved? I don’t know if you are blind or just hypocritical to see that agriculture sector is bad, there are a lot of abandon farms. Why give ppl more land and it won’t be productive? Why shouldn’t you state how you going to improve in agriculture? so what will happen in the next five years? Last election labour tactics was ” who is Ezekiel?” when he came to help. They won. Can you state under labour the major accomplishments in Wesley? Now you came from Canada all of a sudden pushed away Mrs. Shillingford can the people of Wesley ask “who is Ms. Athenia Benjamin?” Personally, it is in my opinion that Ezekiel is the better man for the job, even though he lost he stayed with the ppl. He seems genuine to help everyone instead of some.

All of you who are preaching education, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard and became one of the richess men on the planet. Now tell him that you are not impress with his. qualifications and his tenure at Microsoft in all of yo modda as! I for one am more concerned about how one governs his buisness affairs then what degree he or she may hold. Food for thought when you go to apply for a bank loan, they do not ask what degree or certificate of education you posses. So all you stay right der with all yo stupidness and see how far you get.

Hello it was non other than Lennox Linton who brought up qualfications / degree when he chastised the late Pierre Charles, get your info right. The Constitution does not require an MP to hold any Degree, but if Linton believed that Pierro was not supposed to be PM because he did hold a degree, how then does he put himself up for that very office when he NEVER EVEN completed Secondary School?????? Stop being partisan and speak truth to power…. lol

Balanced you are tipping over, not balanced……… Lennox is an exceptional man who is blessed with talents and abilities, knowledge and intelligence. He has demonstrated it for decades. First of all, he brings a great deal more experience and knowledge than Skerrit did when he became PM and Skerrit was quite impressive and a quick learner, so what makes you think Lennox does not have what it takes. The man has interviewed persons of all disciplines and all walks of life in his journalist career and has held numerous management positions in big Companies. Skerrit Sir, was only a school teacher, so wheel and come again! Lennox for PM boy!!!!!!! DA needs that change!!!!!

I thought Franciso Telemaque and others had insinuated that the Nanny had improved herself but now we know differently; She has done nothing to improve her academic standing since been expelled from primary school for fighting with Mr Kenneth Samuels.

So the question is, Why did Skerro choose her over the banker, is there something that we do not know? Skerro please tell us, enquiring minds want to know!!!

    • Francisco Telemaque
      November 25, 2014

I if I could simply say to you “doh call me name in you ting,” and leave it at that you may begin to develop something more than it is in your mind, nevertheless, I would like to remind you that Athena is not only my friend, she is also my cousin. And let me inform you of how we manage to become related.

Her late grandmother Mildred, was the daughter of my late aunt; Elsie Telemaque, (Ma Joseph Harry), and by her farther Martin Benjamin; who’s mother is a biological Dodds; no point of telling you , I am also a “Dods” since my late mother was born Dods, as matter of fact the fired Gloria Dods Shillingford father Jonathan Dods ( and me mother Yvonne were brother and sister). So it matters not what you say, I am not going to say anything negative about her; neither I will sit here and lie to help her in any way shape or form, because I am not a liar, and I endeavor not to indulge in telling a lies! I will iterate though, that I vacation with her spending about two weeks or more in her house in Canada, along with my nurse, and Athenia’s, Son Wesley, spelt with a “Z’, I drove her to her job at the Brampton Court House, I went to her work station, and I can tell you I saw her work, and I believe that job requires someone with at least a secondary education.

That is all I’ll say about that!

As to wether she went to a university, a four year college, or a two year community college in Canada, perhaps an vocational school, I can’t comment on her educational background, because I do not know! What I do know is one can finish high school in Canada or America, or Europe, and that is any country in Europe even if they were expelled from kindergarten, or as we say in Dominica “Stage 1.”

That is the first class we enter on our acceptance into elementry. We never know; she could have educated herself. If I wish to know wether someone is intelligent or not without my asking them about their level of education, all I need to do is engage that person in a conversation, and try to communicate with them at a certain level, if that person is unable to respond to the diction, or grammar I used appropriately; I will know for a fact that person is not at my level if the person is someone I care about, I will communicate with them at a level, and use simple words that they can understand.

Case and point a while back in Dominica, I encountered Algonnan Shaw, in our village of Wesley, former teacher, principle, educated in England at the expense of Dominica government, he is related to both Athena, and I, his mother is from the Telemaque Klan Via Elise Telemaque. when I was a kid Algonnon tried to make a fool out of me. He told me to count from one to thirty, when I got to twenty-nine, just about when I was about to say thirty, my cousin claimed I said “twnety-ten,” and laugh at me and told the village how I count to twenty-ten

      Hahahaahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahah

I was about nine years old then, I have not forgotten that to this day, so the last time I saw him in Dominica it was political time, and I was explaining some issues which should be cause to return the UWP, to power, Mr. Shaw stood, and he listened to my opinion, then he butted in, using all sorts of words out of the English language, and out of a dictionary he believed poor little dumb Francisco (doh) know what he is talking about. Just when he thought he was embarrassing me with his big words, I responded to him word for word which he thought I could not understand, the sucker was shuck, he shut his mouth, and the last thing I said to him was ” You knew me way back when I attended elementary in the village but you do not know me now, and unless you have a PhD. in something or doctorial degree, you can’t touch me because I am better educated than you are, he walked!

So, there are many ways we can find out if someone is simply scholastically educated at elementary, or secondary level, or academically educated

  11. Voting for Dominica
    November 22, 2014

This is my own objective analysis in keeping with the brief profile or biography of the Candidates so far contesting the December 8, 2014 general election as published on Dominica News Online.

    Taking into account the following:

    • Education
    • Training
    • Experience
    • Involvement
    • Common Touch
    • Understanding and Articulation of the Issues

I wish further to submit that if Dominican voters are voting for the right reasons and are fair. Again in keeping with the Candidates brief profile or biography on DNO would allocate these Constituencies as follow:

    • Castle Bruce – UWP
    • Portsmouth – Very Strong
    • Wesley – UWP
    • Salybia – UWP

ATHENIA said that she will restore the land that was purchased for the international Airport that never got off the ground. ATHENIA the reason the airport did not get off the ground was because of te DLP party refusal to continue the project. Te UWP bought the land and preliminary designs and surveys were in motion prior to the 2000 election.
I am not sure why ATHENIA made such statement- she actually ave kudos to te UWP and criticized the DLP. Voters pease pay attention

  13. Question
    November 22, 2014

Wesley is well respected as village that takes education more seriously than other parts of Dominica. I am almost certain that if statistics are gathered, that will be proven. With that been said, I think it’s an insult to the people of Wesley to ask them to vote for someone who cannot give their educational background in their online request for votes. The DLP should be ashamed. I hope the doctors, economists, lawyers and other influential people from Wesley are taking note and are working to make sure that their strong support of education in their representation remains.
It would be interesting to know how influential Weslians like the former DLP candidate and the country’s chief mental health specialist feel about this.

  14. Not Me Alone
    November 22, 2014

If Athenia Benjamin had any sense of pride in her she would withdraw herself from the Skerrit Labor Party. You mean to tell me Athenia that after you took time to listen to the abuse against women speech Skerrit gave, you still in that with him? Are you not a woman? Do you have daughters? Do you have grand daughters? As a former Freedomite who voted DLP in 2000, 2005 and 2009 just to keep workers out, I don’t even want to remember my sin because my heroine, our heroine, Dominica’s political heroine was a female by the name of Mary Euginia Charles, whose past I know nothing about. What I do know is she did not have children let alone grand children. Skerrits attack again Monel Williams is an attack against Dame Euginia Charles and all women. More shame on you Athenia because as a woman who spent most of your life in Canada where women are respected, you should withdraw yourself from Skerrits dirty down politics against women.

Interesting to see how all the talk about education biting the DLP now. Ms Benjamin what are your qualifications? You didn’t hesitate to go after Lennox the first opportunity you got at lagoon. You had the perfect opportunity as a newbie to elevate the dialogue. You did not.

  19. Francisco Telemaque
    November 21, 2014

I know that both of you are going to get angry at me; but I find nothing significant in what either of you stated. You talk about employment; state the source from which the employment shall derive.

Tell the nation what type of industry either of you intend to bring to Wesley, that someone can get up in the morning, and enter a place of employment, and work eight hours per day; the industry must be able to produce sustainable employment. This nonsense about agriculture, and roads and a trip to hell and back is nothing that we have not heard before.

Look at it this way; the Moroccan fifty (50) room Guess House called hotel in Dominica was supposed to be built somewhere in the vicinity of Wesley, Gloria anticipated that: What did Roosevelt Skerrit and Ian Douglas do; they ensured that Portsmouth was a better place to have it! The International Airport which was in progress to be built in the back of Wesley walking distance from the Village. What did Skerrit and the Labor Party do?

Led by Pierre Charles, they ordered the contractors, and engineers out of country, and shut the project down; compounding insult to an old injury; Skerrit on the orders of Ralph Gonzales of St. Vincent, used the money to install Landing Lights on the Pink Red and Yellow Elephant, and named it Douglas-Charles.

Meanwhile he wasted half a billion ($500 000,000.000) five hundred million dollars on Melville Hall Airport, when less than that could have built an new International Airport in Wesley.

Both of you are basically promising the same crap, so what is the difference between both of you?

As far as I am concern the choice will be up to the voters, I am certain the one they chose will not be based on any thing you offer, or promised, it will boil down to who the people of Wesley loved the most. I am disappointed. Wesley could careless about agriculture, and feeder roads. If Skerrit have not taken care of such simple matters in more than fifteen years, why do you believe you will deliver. Maybe if the UWP wins, Ezekiel might succeed; then again what he has promised is nothing, and I mean nothing as in zap. zero, nada!

As for my cousin, if you win, Skerrit will not allow you to have any say in any decision he makes, you will be just another token: as Gloria was. Mark my words he will treat you worst than he treated your cousin Gloria. We are in the twenty-first century the world does not revolve around agriculture, and Roads, alone we have been dealing with this crap forever, and any place you find the dependency is on Agriculture, poverty is usually rampant. Example: Uganda (Remember Idi Amin), well Uganda in Africa, shipped bananas to Europe, at one time and to this day a cup of coffee cost more than US$8.00 dollars in Uganda, the majority of people still live below the poverty line.

Dole, and another company in South, and Central America shipped Bananas and other agricultural products to Europe, at one time they even try to gain control of the entire market, by getting the monopoly cutting the Caribbean out, they have since abandoned their efforts because the market no longer exists, agriculture is no longer a profitable business: So, both of you are behind the times, we are in an age of technology, and modern industries, both of you are talking about nonsense from which there are no benefits.

If you two want to be angry with me over my opinion, I could careless, be reminded: ‘a man who stands for nothing, will accept anything;’ that is not my game, I will speak the truth even if it invoke all of my dead parents, and they return in their burial shroud! (The word should be industrialization, and more industries).

If you all believe agriculture will work these days, talk to Jamaican and find out why they abandoned agriculture as a source of employment in Jamaica!

Athenia is totally out of the picture.99% of DLP candidates, with the ex eption o TIM TIM are extremely weak. NO WONDER they have transformed Dominica into a begging and handout society/country. Take the two leaders as example.Linton is not only brighter, more respectful and more arti ulate than Skerrit, but even when the Labourites are told what to do, they simply cannot do it! HOW LONG! NOT LONG!

  21. SCWH
    November 21, 2014

By now you all should know my name represents the ‘Sherrit Christmas Wood-ants Hospital’. Now to business. As I compare the profile of both candidates there are some import observations I would like to highlight here:
1.Yesterday Skerrit promised Marigot people a top government minister and up to this day he is yet to do the same to Wesly especially when one remembers that teacher Glo was a minister who was sacked in controversial manner. So clearly its a step backward for Wesley
    2. Interestingly Ms. Benjamin says absolutely nothing about growing up in Wesley as a child, her elementary education and yes, her High School experience. I wonder why? Did she make a mistake and forgot to remember? I thought education really meant everything to Skerrit! That is not the case with Mr. Bazil
    3. Ms. Benjamin sounds like a stranger that does not know anything about Wesley and hence, cannot connect with the people. NO wonder last week she referred to the land purchased by UWP for an international airport as land UWP took from the people. Although someone corrected her because on her profile she agreed UWP acquired the land for the international airport, although she does not seem to know it is her DLP that never got the airport off the ground and hence, took bread and butter from the mouths of Wesley people.
Quite clearly, Ms Benjamin sounds like a person who has already secured a pension abroad and could NOT resist the offers made to her by Skerrit. I wonder how much money Skerrit payed her to come to Dominica even if she does not seem to have entered a high school.

    November 21, 2014

So I am a supporter o the PM Serrit, and his advice to the Dominican electorate was to vote for the right person for the job not for party colour, here in Wesley again it would appear that the better qualified candidate is Ezekiel Bazil so Wesley should be voting for is the better candidate, E. Barzil. Thus returning true democracy to Dominica, a labour PM with a some intelligent Dominicans who can challenge him and keep him grounded rather than puppets who are too afraid to say something and allow the PM to self-destruct this would create a more consensus type of government for Dominica, where all Dominicans views and ideas were taken into consideration. True democracy. Weslye should vote E. Bazil

How does a true woman feel to stand on a platform with Roosevelt Skerit? Where do they find the guts and courage to be one of his candidates? Ms. Athenia Benjamin in particular is demonstrating to us that she has no class whatsoever and is not ready to serve in any form of government since she has lived many of her years on earth in Canada, where women right and dignity is a very big issue. If was voting in the Wesley constituency or in any of the four constituencies where the DLP candidate is female, I sure would vote against them even if I was a laborite. In fact as a form of support for my mother, sister, wife and daughter who are all women, there is NO way Skerrit gets my vote.

I and we, the people of Wesley know better. While the rest of Dominica is looking to see whether university degrees are listed, we already know the universities where Athenia was educated and for the benefit of those who did not know, she mentioned them during her launching in the village. So we don’t need it on there to know she is educated… OK? Now seat your butt down because we are the ones who are going to vote her, not you. Yes, we are happy to hear of her plans while others put their qualifications but short pay us on their plans…

Those days AGRICULTURE was the 6AM -3PM jobs ( not BEGGING ) and then the RUM shops. to chill out ( not a ,$400,000.00) house. so being in a RUM shop does not make one unfit to do a great job..

Does that sound like someone with time on their hands to go and sit in rum shop all day to you?

Besides it should be a clear indication of the current economic status in the country – if people in your village sit in rum shops all day, unless of-course is Mr Bazil alone that just be sitting in the rum shop!

But wait , is DNO bias or is the UWP candidate they have shown are just by far more qualified academically and much more involved in community life than those of the DLP ? In keeping with the Dominica News Online publication of the brief profiles and/or biographies of the candidates contesting the December 8th general election, here is my objective analysis. Let me reiterate, I am neither “red” nor “blue” I am reviewing the profiles based on “credential” from an employee advantage point. Given that, here are my logical conclusions:

Mr. Ezekiel Bazil over Ms. Athenia Benjamin (thumbs up).

I am extremely disappointed in the DLP candidates’ profiles thus far – can’t they do better than that? Ms. Benjamin is applying for a job but her “curriculum vitae” have much to be desired. I have not learned much from her and based on the DNO published profile she has not told me anything about her. Interestingly, she have told me about her political aspirations and she is singing the praises all what the DLP may or may not have done, but tell me about yourself Ms. Benjamin – shall you? By comparison, Mr. Bazil told us about his education background and work history whereas, Ms. Benjamin just briefly touched on her work history (only).

In sum, I am very disappointed can’t the DLP retain someone to pen their candidates profiles and polish it up? Thus far, from the three profiles published by DNO, if we are to vote by “credential” (which is not the case), only Portsmouth constituency I see a real competition. In the other two constituencies so far, UWP would have the edge (thumbs up). I arrived at those conclusions based solely on the profiles but when it comes to the reality we know the answer to that. At the end of the day, I am not impressed with DLP candidates’ profiles so far. The DLP need to raise the bar and find a writer to pen their candidates profiles. I am, however, impressed with the DLP manifesto and that is based on layout, production and contents. I am still reviewing their programs and what are their projected and long term plans for the next 5-years, if elected. The same effort that they put into their manifesto they need to focus some attention towards their candidates’ profiles and bio. Please don’t hate supporters of either political party for keeping it real here.

    God bless Dominica.

Do you think DNO will have time to profile the Political Leaders of the both parties? Leadership is everything.

I noticed also the DLP candidates pictures seem to be hiding in the preview and until you go into the article you do not see the whole photo of the DLP nominee. Coincidence? Maybe.

That is so true. After reading her profile, I know nothing more about Ms Benjamin than her name. I am left to wonder why did the PM choose her over Teacher Glo, a woman who worked so hard to bring home that once UWP stronghold to him. I believe he has already started regretting that decision.

Why is it so difficult for the candidates of the DLP to give a breakdown of their education and work experience in Dominica. Mr Bazil is the best choice for Wesley,Woodford Hill and PalmTree. Let Miss Benjamin go back to Canada where she spent her 30 plus years and have the guts to say she love Dominica and worst WESLEY. CHANG IS A MUST NOT AN OPTION.

Another good pair of candidates! Both obviously have close ties to the community. BUT, given that Wesley is an agricultural community, Mr. Bazil is the better choice given his academic background and past experience/skills. Plus I do not like how Teacher Glo was brushed to the side for someone who spent most of their time outside of Wesley/Dca.

Ezekiel Bazil takes this one hands down…not even considering the fact that the Wesley People have emphatically rejected Ms. Athenia Benjamin. No more really has to be said on this one!!!
