KNOW YOUR CANDITATES: The Roseau Valley Constituency

roseau valley
Ronald Charles (UWP) and Dr. John Collin McIntyre (DLP)

EDITOR’S NOTE: In the run up to the general election, Dominica News Online will be publishing a brief profile or biography of each candidate from the two political political parties contesting the poll. The publications will be done in a random order. The material was provided by the both the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the United Workers Party (UWP).

Dr. John Collin McIntyre (DLP)

It has been an honour to represent you over these last five years. By visiting various areas of the constituency, I have been able to identify what is important to you and have tried to address as many of your needs as resources would allow.

Together we have made considerable progress and the foundation is now firmly laid to move forward at a more rapid pace.

You have witnessed the benefits that rebuilding the roads throughout the Roseau Valley constituency have brought to our community.

Some of Dominica’s most beautiful natural attractions are now easily accessible to our many visitors.

Our people have been given the opportunity to share in the benefits of eco tourism and to build a better life for themselves and their children.

The world is now a very different place and self-employment will be the way of the future. I am committed during the next five years to ensuring that the people of the constituency of Roseau Valley receive the training, skills, advice and support to realize their dreams.

Whether in new tourism–related ventures, new ways to farm or other service oriented businesses I will do all in my power to create a new culture of entrepreneurship and thereby a new class of business people by tapping into the programmes that the Labour Party makes available to Dominicans.

As we look towards the future, we will continue to improve our road network so that we can exploit the potential of both community tourism and agriculture. We will, however, do so in a sustainable way so as to maintain the beauty that visitors are willing to pay to enjoy.

With the rehabilitation of the main Roseau Valley Road from Bath Estate to Laudat and into Trafalgar completed, we will focus our attention on improving the Cochrane Road, the Wotten Waven Road and the balance of the Morne Prosper Road.

A new Labour Party government will continue to support the revitalization of agriculture. I will ensure that farmers in the Roseau Valley constituency and in particularly in Cochrane and Morne Prosper continue to receive agricultural inputs, fertilizer and equipment to be better able to enhance and expand their operations.

Greater concentration will be placed on housing in the new term and I am going to do so by selecting the most appropriate materials that will withstand our unique weather conditions in the Roseau Valley constituency.

Education provides opportunities for a successful life and will continue to be the most critical means of taking people out of poverty.

I will continue to place great emphasis on tertiary education and through our foreign friends and partners provide scholarships to our young people.

As you look towards the next five years, I believe it is important that you examine the Labour Party’s plans for making your life better. You know that we already have a good record and you can expect that record to get even better. We know what has to be done. We have the experience and a clear strategy of how we are going to achieve our goals. We have been working hard for you and we will not fail you.

I ask you to vote for me, John Collin McIntyre so that I can continue to work on your behalf.
Ronald Charles (UWP)

I am known as a Community man. A friendly and hard working man, a grass roots man and a man who stands for Justice, Peace, Integrity and Love; the people’s choice.

I stand by the concept that “the size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire.” It is that belief which has driven me to become an Attorney-at- Law, a Social Worker, Community & Youth Development worker, and an exemplary father of two beautiful children.

Today, I stand proudly as the Roseau Valley’s election candidate for the United Workers Party – Team Dominica.

Born on May 26 to Marie Gabriel Charles and Eugenia Charles, I was raised in a traditional home at Trafalgar, a village known for its majestic waterfalls and ecological beauty. My father is a former primary school Teacher, Sailor, Businessman, Sports fanatic and Agricultural Extension Officer, and is currently a lay minister at the Assembly of Yahweh. My mother, Eugenia Charles, the matriarch of our extended family, is well loved for her wisdom and for being a motivator for both her own children and over ten others that she has cared for over the years.

At 14 years old, I acted on his passion for community development. I became a member of the Trafalgar/Fond Canie Village Improvement Committee, and assumed chairmanship of that group at the age of 19. Acting on a musical inclination, I joined the Look-US Band at age 15, and to date remain the band’s keyboardist and leader.

I attended the Trafalgar Primary School and the Dominica Community High School, where I was deeply involved in sports. It seemed natural for me to follow in my family’s footsteps with involvement in community sports. Since my youth, I have been involved in the Trafalgar Basketball League, sponsoring a community basketball team the ‘’Bullets”, which is the current Roseau Valley basketball champs.

In 1992, I graduated from the Clifton Dupigny Community College, now the Dominica State College, with a Diploma in Architectural Drawings and Building Design. Subsequently, I migrated to the United Kingdom, where I studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Community and Youth Work Studies at the University of Sunderland, graduating with honours in 1997.

I worked as a Youth Officer at the Youth Development Division – a government department of the Ministry of Youth Affairs on a part-time basis after completing studies at the University of Sunderland.

My concern for the development of people also led to my participation in service organizations and in teaching. I am a past Director of the Lions Club (Dominica), Co-founder of the Trafalgar Football Academy and an online tutor in law at the University of the West Indies Open Campus Dominica.

In 2006 I left Dominica again for the University of West Indies Cave Hill Campus (Barbados) to pursue a Bachelor’s of Law. I graduated in 2009 from UWI, and following this, attained his Legal Education Certificate (L.E.C) from Trinidad’s Hugh Wooding Law School in 2011.

I was called to the Bar in Dominica on October 14, 2011.

Currently, I operate my own law firm RONALD CHARLES & ASSOCIATES, which is known for practicing criminal and civil matters.

My nomination as a political candidate for the United Workers Party took place on December 8, 2013 at a meeting of the Roseau Valley’s UWP Constituency Association.

Under a United Workers Party administration, my plan for the Roseau Valley will include redefining the tourism product so as to stimulate gainful employment for vendors, crafters and tour guides; redeveloping the playing fields in the Roseau Valley; upgrading the road network spanning the constituency along Cochrane to Wotten Waven to foster eco-tourism and agricultural growth and production; establishing a Roseau Valley Sports Club focusing on football, cricket and basketball and ensuring protection of the flora and fauna of the Roseau Valley.

It is the general consensus of all the valley that Dr. Mc Intyre has failed in his responsibility to represent the valley. Interestingly on Tuesday evening at Cockrane both the prime minister and Mr. Blackmore confirmed what we all knew, they both asked us to blame them for Mc Intyres lack of performance. It is my understanding that several villagers of Cockrane who were and are sick and needed to travel overseas for medical treatment were promised financial support from their palrep. to date they have not received a cent. however a retired head teacher got a bread new roof for her home and duty free concession on a brand new 4wheel drive vehicle. A shop keeper with a big house in Pottersville (rented for business) got her home in Cockrane completely refurbished. and if you look under her house there is enough material to build another house. Fertilizers have been given to none farmers who in turn sell it to genuine farmers. for over four years a family have been placed in the community center in very inhumane condition with the promise that they would be given a house under the housing revolution. McIntyre has refused to assist that family because he is not sure where they will vote. Mc Intyre is taking from the needy and giving to a few greedy ones in the village. Mc Intyre YOU ARE FIRED. Change is here.

Is that all you can say Shads? It would be nice to hear a more educated response from you given your involvement in the DLP! Smh!

Hello and good morning my people. Well our people have two educated and highly qualify candidates to choose from. I hope they take their time and make the right decision for the candidate they feel would best represent them. I don’t reside or vote in Dominica therefore I don’t take side. Good luck with your choice and final decision on Election Day. We need a set date in the fifth year of the administration for election preferably in October or November.

Is this “De same Ronald Charles”..You mean..de de same same Ronald Charles!! Mr Charles…We are with you! You are undoubtedly a better option. Your credentials just puts the icing on the cake. You have been involved in community development for so many years even to the point where it required you to put ur own funds to ensure the success of an event or project. You are a true good man and understandthe true meaning of community spirit. I had a lot of confidence in Dr.Mac but he ket us. Lets take a pause and look at Dr. Mac’s he said “Some of Dominica’s most beautiful natural attractions are now easily accessible to our many visitors. the road is more accessible…Yes!..we admit..Thanks to Geotherrmal! Tell me…What have you done to help increase the tourism product? ‘Dr Mac the vendors of the valley are crying..it aches my heart to see and hear these vendors who say “Labour ka twavay” in one breath and in another low down tone say “Today was rough wi….a lil water I sell my the site today.” He also said “I will do all in my power to create a new culture of entrepreneurship and thereby a new class of business people by tapping into the programmes that the Labour Party makes available to Dominicans.” Dr Mac are you referring to the NEP?? Have you been asleep, what have you been doing? We gave you a chance to help us but instead you disrespected us; neglected us; helped the same set of people over and over while development should be on a community level rather than a hand-me-cash level…We put you there so we are going to take you out! Make way for Mr. Charles. It’s time we get the deserved representation… and BTW…Dont be fooled by some people shouting labour labaour in red t-shirts, they are just saying thanks for the cash and building materials. And stop telling people you will give them cash after they take a picture of the ballot paper to prove they voted for you…Im so happy I opened my eyes!

Hello! Hello! Hello! Is this the same Ronald Charles who now has the full support, love and appreciation of the ENTIRE Roseau Valley Constituency??? This one is not even debatable, Ronald Charles is like a Rock Star in the Valley. I was there in Trafalgar just over a week ago and I tell you, the man is well-loved!!!! Notice I have yet to mention his opponent, why? Because in the valley it is all about THE SAME RONALD CHARLES!!!! One more in the bag, this grassroots movement for change and good governance is POWERFUL!!!

    • December 2, 2014

so why couldn’t he even win enough votes to become chairman of the village council a few years ago if he is soooooo luved……I reside in Trafalgar so I know….”Rock Star” lol boy please hahahaha

      • TR
        December 2, 2014

He did not win because people like you in the village are not progress minded. I hope you are satisfied with the current state of the community. Where is community spirit? What happened to our feast? This year he tried to save the feast by organizing a jam. when the young lady was sick..he organized the fund raising activity…It’s sad when I see that girl’s mother dressed all in red and started following Labour when Ronald went over and beyond to help her daughter. she could at least show neutrality even though she votes the DLP…I guess she got a cheque too. smh….The people are full of hatred and despise their own for no reason. If you say that you live in Trafalgar you would know the contribution that Ronald has made even though he was rejected by the people. Ronald is a determined man. Community development and team building is part of his nature. No matter what he will do it..It is his calling. TR people know better. I can understand you voting your party (DLP) for whatever reason but give jack his jacket…You all know the contribution that Ronald has made and continue to make to help develope the community. I was born and raised in TR and I would like to see my people rise again! All the way with UWP!!!

In keeping with my fair and unbiased analysis of all the candidates contesting the December 8th general election, and not taking, colors into consideration (red, blue, green, whatever). Here are my analyses of the two candidates for the Roseau Valley Constituency. This analysis is based solely on the published profile or biography by DNO.

Undoubtedly, it can be argued that these are two qualified candidates. However, I cannot help but shake my head when it comes to the DLP’s definition of a “profile” or “biography”. To me, it would appear that only the UWP candidates that truly understand the definitions and the DLP candidates are mainly focused on what they may or may not have done by the national party. As a constituents that bothers me in that I am not getting to know the candidate – the man – the person. Isn’t that the objective of the exercise so we can know our candidates? Unfortunately, I am not getting that from the DLP candidates is it because they are confident that that they will be reelected to government?

Based on the published article and nothing else, I have no choice but to give “thumbs up” to Ronald Charles over Dr. John Collin McIntyre.

    God bless The Roseau Valley.

After 15 years in Power the Doc has pitifully little to show as achievements in the Roseau Valley. He did choose his words wisely though, LOL. With the foundation now set….. what foundation? they are nor in a position to move more rapidly.. garcon you never move in the first place. only concrete thing he was able to mention was the rehabilitation of the road from Bath Estate to Laudat and Trafalgar. what a pitiful bunch of ministers. He did no better than the majority of his colleagues

The same Ronald Charles is the one we want for the valley to go right alongside Sikiri, Isaac and Danny. WE taking all the Roseaus self!!

DNO, wasn’t this man a government minister and is still paid as a minister? Minister of WHAT did he receive a month pay cheque for again? Didn’t I once read that he was the MINISTER OF EMPLOYMENT, TRADE, INDUSTRY, CONSUMER AND DIASPORA AFFAIRS OF DOMINICA? If yes, then is it fair to conclude that when CADREC conducted the Feb. 13 poll for the government “and reported that Dominicans are at this time most preoccupied with the issue of “Unemployment,” it was a direct slap at the minister? So he failed as parl rep, failed really, really, really bad as minister of employment, failed in trade, failed in industry, failed really bad in just about every aspect of his ministry. In fact based on his report card I am left to wonder if it would not have been better for Dominica to save thousand each month by eliminating this ministry and allow civil servants to run it? I am only referring to a DLP administration. But this being said, maybe we would have been better off to allow civil servants to run all of those ministries that we paid large cheques to politicians that knew nothing about leadership. I am going all the way with THAT SAME Ron ro ro Ronald Charles!

DLP candidates have continued to fail to sell themselves to the people. Is this because of haughtiness? or Maybe a sense of entitlement? Dr McIntyre for example has made no mention of his academic background, He could have told us for example of his days as a student of the St Mary’s Academy and what area he has his PhD in and from which institution etc., instead he barks on almost redundantly and sedately about the “Labour Party’s achievements”.

Mr Charles, on the contrary seems to be more intimately involved with the people and presents himself as a more people friendly individual. I would be truly surprised if Mr Charles fails to take that seat based solely on his autobiographical sketch.

  18. gee me gee me all
    December 2, 2014

Gee me Gee me all simply means ‘give me all’. This guy is another proof of the give me, give me all policy of the DLP. As a Parl rep the man’s profile confirms the failure of Dr. John Collin McIntyre first as a parl rep and as a minister. In his first paragraph ” I have been able to identify what is important to you and have tried to address as many of your needs as resources would allow.” Is he trying to blame his failure on lack of resources? There is NO WAY the people of Roseau South will accept this crap and lousy excuse. We talking about a party that gathered and heaped up over $30 Million dollars to campaign in just one month! No resources to improve the lives of constituents? Hogwash that! Also, no mention was made about the hydro project since this government spent a lot on it so far and saw it as a way out? Should I take this to mean that the minister sees it at a failure and no longer sees a future in it? He talked about roads, education self employment, housing etc. , but nothing about hydro. This gentleman deserves to be the first one to get rejected come the Dec. 08.

Ronald Charles, I must say I am very impressed by your credentials. Your involvement in the community and especially with the youths, give me hope that the youths in your constituency will be given the opportunities to excel and not sit on the street side ideal all day. I am certain that you will make the effort to ensure that your constituency raise above all odds. I believe that you will give exceptional representation to the Roseau Valley.

But why are u all so impress with Ronald Charles and the rest of team dominica credentials or qualifications wen their leader Lennox Linton do not have a school leaving certificate. he has never been involve in any community group in Marigot or in any part of Dominica. I find that very interested eh.

        December 3, 2014

Shart! I am unsure why people like you are so fascinated with Lennox Linton education. I would like to see how many of you have degrees. Half of you all didn’t even get to complete primary school under Eugenia Charles regime. So stop bashing a man who have taken every opportunity to excel through numerous training and working with numerous reputable companies. You guys are so hype about Roosevelt Skerrit Education and fail to realize that he only has a useless psychology degree, oh by the way maybe his degree is not useless since he using it manipulate the people of the country.
