KNOW YOUR CANDIDATES: The Petite Savanne Constituency

petite savanne constituency
Urban Baron (left) and Kenneth Darroux

EDITOR’S NOTE: In the run up to the general election, Dominica News Online will be publishing a brief profile or biography of each candidate from the two political political parties contesting the poll. The publications will be done in a random order. The material was provided by the both the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the United Workers Party (UWP).

Dr. Kenneth Darroux (DLP)

Darroux excelled in the then Common Entrance Exams in 1981 to later emerge as the top student in the CXC exams of 1986. He taught for one year, then went on to pursue studies in Cuba and obtained his medical degree in 1996. He served as the Medical Officer of the Grand Bay Health District for 11 years, earning a reputation as a compassionate and caring doctor.

He said, “It has been such a joy to represent you in Parliament during the last five years. I have come to know you even better than when I was your District Medical Officer and serving you has been my greatest reward.

While we have made great progress in education and housing generally we have also impacted positively on the lives of people in Pichelin with the bridge to the health centre; so too the young people of Petite Savanne who have a playing field for the first time; the residents of Bagatelle and Petite Savanne are enjoying a reliable water supply and the landscape of Dubique has changed with the sale of house lots to residents there for 25 cents a square foot. These are just some of the things that I am proud to have achieved simply because they have made a huge difference to the lives of ordinary, hard working Dominicans.

As we look to the future I will continue to implement social policies that will change the lives of the less fortunate; that will prepare our young people to own their own businesses; that will provide safety and security for our senior citizens and that will bring economic opportunities in tourism, fishing and agriculture to the people of our constituency.

We have a great opportunity to commercialize the fishing industry to create sustainable jobs by the construction of a fishing harbor and marine complex at Dubique.

Such a complex will provide opportunities for marine leisure activities aimed at tourists and locals alike and provide jobs for residents of the constituency.

I will also be promoting the development of tourist related projects on private lands through Government’s existing concessions for such developments as another means
of providing employment and economic activity.

Similarly I will be assisting young people who have good ideas to turn them into business ventures with the support of the Small Business Unit that will provide grants and concessional loans.

The National Employment Programme will be expanded for other young people seeking work and on the job training.

Infrastructural development of roads, bridges and drainage will continue in order to provide the conditions for investment.

I look forward to working with you and for you to help you realize your dreams. I am therefore asking you to vote for me so that I can continue to implement the people centred policies of the Dominica Labour Party.”

i note Dr. Darroux did not mention any accomplishments for Bellevue Chopin because he really have not done anything in this community. Dr. Darroux Bellevue is part of the Petite Savanne Constituency lest you forget. Fix the roads and water supply system among other things…..

Darroux was an old friend and classmate and the man i saw years later was a victim of the system. A man trapped by the Skerittism of Dominica. He is nothing but a Skeritt puppet and I know that he is 100 times smarter than Skerritt – Shame

I commend the efforts by DNO to educate us voters on who the candidates actually are but their efforts will be in vain if the present fraudulent activities in this election continues without being stopped. The will of the people is being stifled through the acts of bribery, and importing of voters.

I appeal to right thinking people out there to do their part in prevent election fraud this time around. If you know something. SAY SOMETHING DO SOMETHING. Go through the electors list in your respective constituencies and report all those who don’t belong.

DNO people don’t just like my comment DO SOMETHING JOIN THE FIGHT

DNO, this is the only set of candidates you have put out that have me thinking of who is better. All others without a second thought the UWP was head and shoulder above them. This time I had to think. here is my heart: 1. Kenneth Darroux
I like Kenneth Darroux because thanks to the UWP, he was able to go out and get himself qualified to be a doctor today. Although he is a DLP candidate, to me he is a UWP at heart and just waiting on the right opportunity to do what is right. I also like him because it is a fact that he cannot be bullied by Skerrit and will curse Skerrit in his face. However he should have distance himself from Skerrit and resign.,

    2. Urban Baron
I prefer Mr. Baron because he has demonstrated to all that he would not sit there and allow Skerrit to destroy Dominica and his constituency. After all, like the other ministers he could compromise character in exchange for becoming a millionaire. But instead he said hell no to this nonsense and resigned. That’s what I call real character and these are the qualities we need to take the country forward. And therefore on the basis of character, selflessness and love for community, I WILL VOTE FOR MR BARON!

Don’t know who did the write up on or for Dr. Darroux, but that information about when he went to Cuba is totally false. The guy went to Cuba with me in 1996 and did his 7 years in Cuba. He returned home in 2003. He then worked as a doctor probably from 2003 to 2009 when then contested the Petite Savanne constituency for the DLP. So to say that he worked as a doctor 11 years is misleading. Please tell the truth.
Look like is only today Dr. Darroux went to help young people who have business ideas in his constituency. For the past five years I have followed all the comments that were being made with respect to Dr. Darroux not doing nothing to fix roads, employment, etc. Some use to say that he would pass them in his big ride well dark up and would never stop to converse with them. So my question to these young unemployed people is, do you thing if you vote him in again he do something for you all this time around?

Qualification alone is inadequate to make one the representative of choice. It takes several other qualities, one of them being that a parliamentary representative must be a people person. Remember Romanus Banis. He competed against 2 doctors and beat them. He was a down to earth roots man. So that quality must be added to one’s educational/professional qualifications. The candidates plans and vision for his community is also important because if he/she wins, these will be the yardsticks by which his constituents can evaluate his performance.

That is always when I post, when I find someone who is always a labor party supporter speaking rubbish as they always do. Dominican to the bone, why are you trying to bring down Mr. Barron for being someone carrying fish for the fishermen of his constituency, do you know how much these people make for their hard work, I bet you, he makes more money than your entire salary at the end of at least 4 trips. And you have to be a down to earth man to carry fish to sell for you people who needs that money to feed their family, I know because I am a gardener.

At least he didn’t stay with the Labory party driving his big vehicle with his darker glass up and not saying hello to any one, and living in his palace like hi leader Skerrit and his cronies.

Its people like you that will keep voting for labor party, to allow them to keep on enriching them selves and not doing any thing for Dominica, (your idiot). Mr Baron is the only minister with enough self respect to not kiss Skerrit butt to remain a minister, and for your information in the days of Rosie Douglas, God rest his soul, Mr. Barron was treated with respect and dignity, Remember Mr Barron, Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles were the ones who brought labor to where it is today and none of these men have been treated with any respect. Go Skerro, Mr Invincible, your time to be a looser is at hand, just don’t get the heart-attache you guys gave Pierre Charles to take his place.

On the issue of qualifications, no comparison between both candidates. It just struck me, let us get away from the party/colour system and vote Dominica, that is, select the best qualified candidate in each constituency, so even if we are red and the better candidate in your constituency is blue, all I am saying is let us vote blue!!!

In keeping with my fair and unbiased analysis of all the candidates contesting the December 8th general election and again, not taking colors into consideration (red, blue, green, whatever), here are my analysis of the two candidates for the Petite Savanne Constituency as profiled by DNO.

Although, I would have liked to have read more about both candidates background, it is obvious to me that this time, the DLP candidate Dr. Kenneth Darroux have the edge by far (thumbs up). This is based solely on “credential” however, it should be stated that this is another DLP candidate that have disappointed me performance-wise. As a Minister with portfolio for the Environment, Natural Resources, Planning and Fisheries, Dr. Darroux has not done a good job with that Ministry and as a direct result, our Environment and Natural Resources are in dire straits. The trend has been that we are continuing to disregard and damaged the country’s greatest asset. From a professional viewpoint, it has always been my positions that Dr. Darroux’s ministerial portfolio appointment was not the correct one for him, and he has done a dismal performance as was expected. That one was over his head.

Mr. Baron on the other hand, has had an exceptional political and Governmental background and his experience as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure Development should not be discarded as it is valuable to the governance of our country. His background no doubt is impressive.

Given that fact, the UWP candidate cannot and should not be discounted and certainly Mr. Baron has the experience edge over Dr. Darroux (thumbs up). Nevertheless, here is the pro – I do concur with Mr. Baron that he is a true veteran politician but honestly, isn’t that the partial problem that is plaguing our Government and country today? This is why, to me, issues are and should be the focus and not this pouring in of funds into all these foreign artists and performers, because at the end of the day, who will suffer? We do need to educate ourselves and vote wisely on December 8th. The freebies are all nice, but they are just for the moment, and after December 8th, 2014 we will be right back to square one – and we will be forced to endure it for another 4 ½ to 5 years. Can we really risk that readers and electorates?

    God bless Dominica.

In my opinion the DLP candidate gas a far better chance he is young and wants to learn and move with the people for betterment . His plans are modern and more sophisticated.. R
The UWP candidate on the other hand might have the political experience but may be lacking vision and scope to move beyond 2014 ideologies. He could lend support to the upcoming DLP candidate..
