Linton accuses gov’t of using state authority during Independence

Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, has accused the government of using state influence and authority to “make sure its wrong appears to be right.”

He was speaking against the background of comments made by several members of the government who argued that two Independence events, which the UWP had called to boycott, were successful.

The UWP had called on citizens to boycott the National Youth Rally and the National Day Parade to ‘silently protest’ the election of Charles Savarin as president of Dominica.

Prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit took a shot at the idea on Independence Day, describing the National Day Parade as the ‘largest and the most colorful’ and saying those who attended “have distinguished right from wrong, sense from nonsense, responsibility from immaturity, love for country over love for a political party.”

But according to Linton, the issue of numbers had nothing to do with the call for boycott since the government had used its influence to pump up attendance at both events.

“I am told that the numbers at the stadium for the National Youth Rally comprised hundreds of students, thousands of students who normally would not be part of the crowd at the Youth Rally because they would be at school,” he told Q95 on Wednesday morning. “They were commandeered, dictatorship style, to be there with their teachers … a number of them there unsupervised, a violation of the Education Act.”

According to the UWP leader, the numbers at the rally was the result of “a dictate from on high” that “thou shall be at the stadium for the Youth Rally or else.”

He went on to say that for the National Day Parade, buses were made available to people across Dominica to transport them to the Windsor Park Stadium.

“It has never happened before,” Linton stated. “If you are going into that new facility now of providing transportation for everybody who wishes to have a lime on Sunday afternoon to come down to Roseau, don’t you expect to see numbers at the stadium? If you are commandeering students who are normally not at the stadium at the Youth Rally to be there or else, don’t you expect to see people there?”

He described the boycott call as a “principled stance for the Constitution” noting that it has brought national attention to the issue.

“We think very importantly, significant national attention being brought to this issue, whether people agreed with us or not, it means we have work to do to get them to understand the significance and importance of government adhering to the Constitution and the rule of law and we are prepared to do that,” Linton noted. “Today we celebrate a different kind of victory, a victory that validates the stance we took for the Constitution.”

These comments by the leader of UWP is not only insulting to the Prime minister and Government of this island but also a gross insult to his fellow Dominican citizens who are true patriots and embrace occasions like these to show off their national pride. Mr Linton’s narrow mindedness is in direct contrast to the openmindedness of the majority of our very proud citizens. I suggest to Mr Linton that he go back to his radio talk show thing and allow the more educated members of his party do the politiking. Mr Linton’s experience in the political arena is like a small fish in a large pond.

Linton let me say this to you, stop going on about something that has already gone and move forward if you want ppl like me to see if you are qualified to the job of representing Dominica on the global front… Right now I’m not seeing that I’m seeing a man making noise about anything that the other party decid to do…
Pls Linton tell me what your plans are for my country, your goals and where you want Dominica to be if you are elected prime minister.
I am not interested if the prime minister paid ppl to come to the stadium, it’s not a bad thing that he done if he did do it… Linton you would do the same if u was in the pm’s place… So don’t make that an issue.

Hey, where have you been since Linton announced his interest to be involved in building Dominica as a member of government/parliament? You do know that his plans and goals and things of that sort are all that have been spoken about, right? I, for one, am almost tired of hearing plans, plans, plans. I want to see them in action in government – LOL. Or are you one of those who listen to one radio station, one political party and see with one eye? Please, stop acting like you care and listen to and observe from different angles what is going on around you and so make yourself, your family and country proud with an informed decision that you will make when elections come around.

During the UWP Economic Symposium last week, Mr. Norman Rolle, a business man in Roseau, representing DAIC, made a case for the business community by requesting that the numbers of holidays in Dominica should be reduced. In stead of listening to the Gentleman of emmense knowledge of doing business in Dominica, in order to stop of Mr. Lennox Linton’s match to the Prime Ministership, they have added two more holidays. What a country.

    • Justice and Truth
      November 8, 2013

What else is new? For some it is all work and no play. Life is short and people need this diversion.
The West Indies – Dominicans get more holidays. If it does not affect the financial aspect of their work, why should the businessman complain about it?
Furthermore, those holidays also produce work and financial means for others as also those who sell eats and other items at such times. We must look at it from every aspect and not a personal one.
I reside in a country that people also love holidays. If only we had more. When one considers the commuting time and work hours also in this era of little pay with hardly any annual increase, many wished there were more holidays. I do not blame them.

Hasn’t it always been an honour to go to the park and stopm our feet “left, right, left, right, left, right, left.” and to salute “eyes right, forward march?”

I reminisce on those days and i remember them with pride, just as i remember some of us practising to be in the carnival parade.

these are part of our culture, our childhood and raising up Dominican.

Many of us were happy and proud to be selected to represent our schools at these parades.

i look back on those days with nostalgia for i cannot redo them, but i can live vicariously through the students of today.

so i say, what manner of betrayl and unpatriotism is this that this man wanted to support?

for the love of Dominica, there must be times when unity is a MUST and Independence is one of those times.

    Another failed attempt.

Whether is the Minister or someone authorised by him, they have the authority not you Mr. Linton to asked that all school should be closed to have children to attend what, these children look forward to each year. What authority did you have to ask them to stay home, certainly they did not listen to your call, either that of your cronies. I wonder what your children said to you while they were sited home watching their classmates on display, did you short down the television on them too? Your irresponsible behaviour it’s possible that you did.

Let me same to you, that your action to call for such boycott was shameful, irresponsible, and unpatriotic. I expected that behaviour from you certainly, but when the likes of Thompson Fontaine, a man of international experience subdue and support you in such comical behaviour, the future of you party is destined to fail. I have heard the warning of parents to children, “don’t involve yourself in big people business”. SHAMEFUL NONE OF YOUR CRONIES LEARNT THIS.

Mr Linton and Thompson it is shameful.

You mean to tell me, Dominicans are so gullible and unpatriotic??? I want Mr Linton to know that I paid my fares to go to the Stadium on Sunday. I did it because he asked for the boycott. Under Normal circumstances I would have stayed home. So because the Prime Minister paying for a bus I will go to see the parade when what I really want to do is boycott???? That is nonsense….Please… All you can “bawl” workers till tomorrow morning, all you have another five years to stay in the yard!!

Wouldn’t the Education Department, who is under the Ministry have any communication with the schools? Why is the opposition so bent on creating problems on the most simple and straight forward things in our country?

Mr Linton it is no way patriotic to ask the people of a country to boycott their independence celebration for something that you don’t agree on. Far worst it is so petty to involve the children to take part in this political games by asking them or their parents not to take part in the youth rally.
I dont see where all this politics nonsense of boycotting the independence celebration helping the country in any way on both sides with the talks and actions that were made and taken. Politicians remember we have a country at stake to build and to enhance. Please stop playing political chess with the country and the powers that the people have entrusted you with and please come up with innovative ideas and plans to Move Dominica forward.

Someone should inform Linton that injecting such dispute into NATIONAL school and independence day events ought to be considered a threat to national security. It was a bold, frivol risk that should not have been taken especially where children are involved. I would very much like to side with him but the safety of my children come first, and under no circumstances should parents appreciate the volatile situation that was created before and during these events.

I’m somewhat confused! So Lennox Linton and the UWP BOYCOTT OPPOSITION PARTY believe they have the outmost right to go on radio and the Internet repeatedly, telling the nation to boycott the Independence rallies and the Prime Minister have no right to urge his people to attend. Come on now people!! Lennox needs to stop his childishness. Stop lying because you can’t bring any prove that the government threatened people to attend. Did the Prime Minister send the police to force people out of their homes and unto buses?!! come on Lennox. So when PM Skerritt wins the next election you will tell us that the nation was threatened also!!! Just shut up and let it go; the call to boycott failed just like all the other calls that the UWP have made. Think of something else to do. And always remember that the Labour Party is a force to reckon with, they may be silent but they will continue to vote for their party.

You are quoting your Party Leader and no where in your story you could show independent confirmation or rebuttal of his allegations.

Since September 15, 2013 the Prime Minister made clear Allegations that the UWP was promised campaign funding by Handley and Partners to include campaign management by the notorious Strategic Communication Laboratories of London.

Furthermore, if the UWP knew what was good for them, they should have made Hon. Hector John the leader of the party.

He is young, holds a BA in Information Technology, and has a proven track record with the electorate in his constituency. And afterall, he is the present Leader of the Opposition.

He should take a leaf out of Julius Timothy’s book and ensure that the people that elected him be fully represented in parliament, rather than follow washed out doomsayers who practice the 70s and 80s type of politics.

UWP had thier shot of leading the country, and only have themselves to blame, if the electorate chose to boot them out.

Come on man, would you hire some one who has no experience, or driving license to fix your car if it is broken down, or inthis case, a right-off, just because he is well-known for his ill-advised ‘investigative journalism’ and ‘thinking-out-loud’ rants in the media.

I cannot, for the life of me, recall one instance of Linton’t involvement in people development, or the running of a business, or yeoman sacrifice for a humanitarian cause. Mr. Lennox Linton and friends…especially the four ‘big’ ones, please change your tactic. You sound like little school children and quite frankly are losing potential voters. So what if students were encouraged to attend the Youth Rally, they also learn that they need to have pride in country and pride in self. Having pride in country does not mean turning your back on your independence celebrations. Remember: Skerrit and his team never gave independence to our country – have you forgotten Dominica celebrates 35 years of independence?? Encouraging students to love their country and celebrate its independence, beauty and culture does a lot for self pride.

Linton and team start looking at ways to help improve the country. Discuss plans, or better yet discuss what the government highlights in parliament, poke holes in it, use actual facts. Help make the politics game better!!! You have quite a knowledgeable team use it wisely!!!!

Dominicans do not care a damn about who Skerrit appoints, we are only interested in getting ready for the Elections when Skerrit will pack up with all his baggage.

Party affiliation or not, I always through the decision was a bad move by the UWP. Thankfully, there will be enough time for the party to recover from the negative PR this move caused. Personally I was turned off by the move. I did not listen to Q95 for days following that decision and when I heard Linton on Q95 on Wednesday, I turned off. No political party in my opinion could justify boycotting the two main events to mark our independence. Linton admitted that this was an unpopular decision; but Linton, it was a bad decision. I would surprise if you got 10 extra votes for this move; but won’t be if you lost 100.

I had hope that with Linton and the new team, there would be a move away from boycotting and other “aggressive” and “controversial” tactics. I believe that’s where the party lose a lot of “middle”/ “undecided” voters. This is politics and remember, you’re up against Roosevelt Skerrit; and while most of us know his many short comings, we all know very well politics is not one of them. He can play the political game better than almost any politician in the Caribbean. And I am not his fan, but the truth is what it is.

I through the job and economy forum was great from what I was able to hear; and these are the things people what to hear more of if they are to give UWP a try.

Linton, I agree your party must challenge what wrong every time, but consider the approach. If the members of the UWP had stayed away from the official events and left it at that (without encouraging members of the public to); there would have been much less political damage. The challenge against ABK was successful and others will be, but don’t expect all to be. Listen to a few people in the middle before making controversial decision. I suspect the party needs to create a few “focus” groups .

I still believe the UWP have a better and more sustainable plan for the development of Dominica; however, I expect a lot positivity from the party.

If you are so knowledgeable, why aren’t you proving it through your actions? Why are you separating the country, why setting up hate and war. Why don’t you use your leadership to build instead of destroying. Being on the opposition side doesn’t mean that you are against the party on power… Party on power and opposition should put hand together to build the country they both love and want its growth…
Mr. LL, we are saying there is no money in the country and you are coming to power, where will you get money to accomplish all what you are saying it was not done by the other party? I may be wrong… But just saying and thinking.. and Mr. LL you should think deep about your action…

Linton says that the UWP’s call for boycott was “a principled stance for the Constitution”!I wish to ask Mr. Linton one simple question: Has he submitted a challenge in the courts to the election of Mr. Savarin on the grounds that the process was unconstitutional? And if not, why not?
We recall that the UWP boycotted Parliament for almost two years following the last general elections on the grounds that among other things the elections were stolen (bribery; electoral fraud; illegal PM; etc…)The courts determined otherwise!

    3. Both UWPITES as well as Skerrites attended the functions because as Dominicans we like to sewotay.

Well what I do know is that traditionally for the school’s parade a contingent of 30 students were asked to take part in the event, and then school continues as usual for the rest of the student body.
This year the secondary school in my area was shut down. Not a single child was at school on that day. So Lennox, Fontaine, Norris , Q95 and UWP supporters were in full force telling people not to attend the rally. For days they were all over the place calling for the boycott of the two rallies.
The prime Minister Skerritt made a call to encourage ( according to % coerced to attend) Dominicans to attend the independence activities. There was a bigger crowd at the stadium than ever. So it shows that the people, including the UWP supporters did not listen to the Boycott party and attended. So what is the story about it was a victory for the UWP?!!! You guys better leave that alone, because even UWP supporters are embarrassed by the whole thing. Mr. Linton did not have to disclose those facts, every one knew that was Skeritt’s plan. Skeritt and the Labor Party Government might be accused of many things, for instance corruption, lies, jobs, promises not kept, but not stupidity. Mr. Linton has become Skeritt’s political night mare, consequently,
he will do whatever it takes to secure his popularity as well as a total grip on power. The man is in the toughest battle of his political life and a strong possibility should he loose the next elections their will be countless investigations, what do you expect him to do. Remember months ago Skeritt was accused of travelling approximately twenty days in a month, haven’t you observed the trips have disappeared, dried up, well, this the doing of Mr. Lennox Linton. Right now the man is confused as regards to the date of the next General Elections, this too, is the doing of Mr. Lennox Linton. • Toomatoe Tomato
      November 7, 2013

If what Mr. Linton thinks and says, it just shows that we would rather listen to The PM than him. He should realize he has no effect on how Dominicans think. Thank God we had a choice and we chose Dominica and our Independence Celebrations than listen to Linton.

Linton made a big mistake and he must realize that if he doesn’t he is not ready yet. He wants to dictate to us what we must do and he comes with his buses story? Dominicans all over the country came to the celebrations. How many of us could walk from all over Dominica to come to Roseau? So now he wants to say we were commanded to go? He should be ashamed of himself.

He made another big, big mistake – he messed with what Dominicans hold dear. That is where his acknowledgement that he is a novice shows up once again.

He would have more credibility saying he made a mistake than coming up with his bus story. Even if people got buses, they did not have to go if they didn’t want to go. That is where he under estimate Dominicans. I am sure there were many people who wished they could have gone and could not go even if they had a ride and if others had a rides why would they miss it?

As for the Youth Parade – anyone can see how the school children practiced for that occasion and they did not just practice in a day or two, so that again is full of ignorance and that is a shame.

Any child whose parents kept them home for political reason have done their children great harm that will affect them for many years to come. Can you imagine a child watching their classmates in the parade with tears running down their cheek because a disgruntled parent prevented their child the opportunity; I mean if the child was sick yes, or any other serious reason but using their own children that way is very bad parenting. Poor parental skills.

We have to congratulate all the parents who made it their duty to put their children above politics.

I recall my days at school when I looked forward to my school uniform cleaned, starched and ironed and marching in the parade that we practiced long and hard for. Even if we had a little fever we wanted to go because these days are important to us.

This is getting pathetic now. Truly pathetic. Just shut up and get on with policies. Enough is enough. I am truly fed up. I want two or more effective parties in Dominica. This childsplay crap is getting pathetic now. Pathetic little jabs from both sides. I heard, I saw this happen, they say. Is like Dominican politics turn into a soap opera now. Just shut up, all of you work together and fix my country. If me self have to revolt is against all politicians right now because they are all making me sick now. Grow up

hahahahahaha… ‘a different kind of victory..’ .. One where you lose the game by an innings and 300 runs (get 2 for 1 as they say down here) …but you still win the match??? they give you a ‘doh paou two’ and you still counting the points for you .. that kind of victory … Listen partner, you better come better than that or the minuscule chance you have now with just disappear … Start calling black for white and 6 for 9 ..and you will lose your credibility faster than yon can say ‘landslide defeat’..

    Linton, can talk…leadership is ???

  96. November 6, 2013

I think it is high time that Mr. Linton acted his age and stop using every opportunity to criticize and start listening to the people of Dominica. It was a very unpatriotic on his part to ask the populace to boycott an event that is part of the Dominican pride. Dominica is not a toy , stop throwing tantrums when things do not go your way Mr.Linton.

Lennox Linton is a Dictator too, he was comandeering children to boycott the state events. The Government has a right to choose the President and since UWP always absent from Parliament they missed out.

Lennox Linton it is time to shut your trap. I personally am getting fed of UWP and their nonsense. Please focus on what you have to offer,
what can be done to improve youth unemployment, create jobs, help development and make Dominica a more saleable focus in the tourism market.

The way you men are behaving it seems Prime Minister Skerrit is all you main and only focus and while you all are looking for holes to dig the said Prime Minister has done threefold for the country.

Stop playing beh belle diable and set up a good opposition. Be pro active in Dominica’s core development not negative and fighting like black devils in a corner round a furnace burning all you self up. Show Dominicans that you guys are leaders, and not some grave diggers whenever they complaining or fight case they end up digging their own graves

Sorry, meant to say DNO, not son as my android phone keeps changing my words sometimes.

    • Justice and Truth
      November 7, 2013

Do you think this is the fault of your android? Note the difference in those two words, “DNO” and “son”. The “s” is not close to the other words. When it occurred to me on more than occasion, I thought that someone was playing tricks and/or has control of my computer system. It is a strange phenomenon which I do not experience on other Websites and not in my personal writing.
I merely comment from my computer keyboard and observed on many occasions some words changed and showed incorrect spelling. I wrote DNO about this more than once. I cannot prove what is causing this but it is strange in addition to annoying, disappointing and frustrating.

Give it a rest Linton, the independence celebrations are over and everyone had fun. The transports provided was a good initiative to give the unfortunate ones the privilege to see the events for once in their lifetime and to celebrate their country.
You are just unhappy that your boycotts did not work and you lose this one.

    November 6, 2013

I see no sense for people boycotting this parade. The prime minister made it accessible for people to enjoy the celebration. Why are we seeing negative in everything? By him providing transportation enabled people who could not afford to enjoy the celebration, a chance to rejoice alongside the entire country. Linton’s views make no sense and needs to be clearer and he needs to be more detail in his reasons for boycotting this special occasion. Give us a concrete reason why someone should boycott a celebration because of the views of one political party?

And so I would say these words to him: Hail Linton, full of hate, the Lord be with you; do not call for boycott and when the masses don’t heed your advice turn around and cry like a baby.

Rubbish, rubbish and more rubbish!!!!!!!! The youth rally is always well attended, when I was going to school that was the rally that all school kids looked forward to, so don’t come and talk your nonsense about children was forced. Secondly, the military parade is just evident of uwp disrespect to their country’s culture, what about the people who were honoured for the continuos contribution to dominica? Man ya’ll better stick to economic growth and international airport and don’t ever try to divide and bring in politics into our country’s celebrations.

    November 6, 2013

Linton!!! The government is going to break the law regardless so stop paying so much attention to them and going back and forth. Do some internal work on your party and some ground work within the constituencies. Concentration on ways to deliver the country from the present situation and move forward. Work on you all game plan and then when the time is right you will go public. Right now I think a little less talking and a little more action is necessary.

PS: The strategy your party used the last 2 elections – talking a whole lot on the radio, accusing the government of corruption and going against the constitution, and digging up dirt on Skerrit and his cabinet – DID NOT WORK. Therefore I also suggest you try something new – Hire a strategist if you have too.

Oh, Mr. Linton! You have shameless guts Some time ago you made a public statement to the effect that it is better for someone to acknowledge they have gone or done something wrong, bite the bullet, say a me aculpa, and move on. But that seemingly is a bitter medicine for you. You argue that government directed that those students who would not normally attend the youth rally attend or face certain consequences, only you can imagine. And so by force they came to the Windsor Park and formed the numbers. I am sure you would have claimed even a greater victory if the very same students who as you say would not normally attend the rally stayed away. You would have called that “no show” at the stadium for your campaign. What a weekend you would have had. That not being the case, your volcano erupted in your own face, you now turn around and find every reason, not patriotism or disrespect for your call why the youth came in their numbers. What did you expect Sir? You expect government to simply stand by, ignore you and thus allow you to run amock with the intelligence and psyche of the Dominican masses. Now prove the point that government or party paid buses to bring people to Roseau on a Sunday afternoon. ONLY A MISCHIEVOUS PERSON AND A BITTER LOSER CAN EVEN THINK LIKE THAT.Doesn’t it occur to you that PM Skerrit has significant support among the Dominican masses. The quicker you learn to accept that truism, then no smooth talk of “state sponsored” action as you are suggesting will lighten the emotional load you are carrying. Your CALL FOR A BOYCOTT OF TWO INDEPENDENCE ACTIVITIES FAILED AND FAILED MISERABLY. Take that!!! Put it into your pipe and smoke it!!!!
