UPDATE: Monelle Williams named UWP senator

Williams is the new UWP senator
When parliament meets on Tuesday July 1, the opposition United Workers Party will have a fresh face and voice added to its side in the person of new senator Monelle Williams.
On Friday, the UWP announced that Williams was named senator on it side.
Williams told Friday’s press conference that her gift is her love for people and this she will take to parliament.
“I love to help people attain success, and so I take this passion with me into parliament,” she noted.
She said she is honored to be selected by the UWP to be a senator.
“I am honored that my peers have selected me for appointment as a senator in parliament of Dominica,” she stated. “As I enter parliament, I enter a new journey but I am ready. I will be bringing a high level of debate to parliament. I rise to make parliament aware of the things that matter most to the people of Dominica, especially the women of Dominica and the people of the St. Joseph constituency.”
Opposition leader, Hector John, described Williams as the most dynamic young politician in the present male dominated political race.
“A young politician who continues to rise and make a mark in Dominica’s politics,” he said.
According to him, Williams will add gender balance to the House.
He also thanked the former Senator Ronnie Isidore, who Williams is replacing, for his contribution to parliament.
When questioned on how Williams was chosen, John said it was “very simple.”
He disclosed that the matter was discussed at a management meeting of the UWP and several factors were taken into consideration.
“We looked at her youthfulness, gender balance, what she brings to the people of Dominica and right now Monelle Williams is the ideal person to be a senator in Parliament,” John stated.

Alas Monelle, i feel sorry for you . Dem smart cats use you to just expose and show your weakness..
Why couldnt Thompson, Lennox himself or Sikerree or all those dynamic men of UWP go … saying they love women that is just mouth talk… Monelle while i support you as a woman you needed some experience before entering Parliament girl.. Spaggs there so long and look at majee he doing.

Secondly, Lennox could not expose his weakness yet not on live TV…. and too compound the situation he would have had to take oath infront of Charles Savarin lollolololll and then to hear Madame Speaker tell him Retract your statement Sir, will cause Lennox to give the lady a colpein… Before nothing let Monelle go and face that dragon…

I just heard two people replaced the UWP former named candidate. One as Senator and one as their Candidate in Mahaut. That man must have been really leader material for the UWP. Makes you wonder of the real reasons why he was dismissed.

I wish the new Senator well in Parliament. But I would wonder why not the Party Leader.

I guess he wants the PM job period and since he cannot have the job of the Leader of the Opposition because he is not an elected member; he does not want the Member for Salisbury as his boss in Parliament, so he is staying out because he would not have too much authority in the House.

I see it as a poor move on the behalf of the UWP but an excellent one for the Government and the incumbent Parl Rep and for us the people to see. Let the Opposition keep on making a mockery of the system. While we the people have the power to keep them in opposition for a very long time.

In what country, you would find a person who wants to be the Prime Minister would not do all in his power to go to Parliament as soon as possible.

Normally the first thing a Leader does if that is the true intention is have a by election in a safe seat and get to parliament as soon as possible.

But unfortunately not the UWP. They are not a serious party. They are many things but a serious contender for the Government of Dominica? Heaven help us.

They say they want the PM to call elections. They keep on telling us, even before elections are constitutionally due. That is one thing they are doing to feel relevant, while the government is working.

We are not even certain the wanna be PM know what constituency he will be running. It would not surprise if when elections are called that he is no longer a candidate.

Thank God we can count on the PM and the Government, to do what is in our best interest.

I see most of the UWP supporters on here joyous I even seen one said that CH and the PM must be regretting what they did that one was real funny, now you guys keep looking at things blindly they think they did Monelle a favor but they just hung her out on the line like newly washed clothes, you might ask why I say that, they only gave her the senator ship position because yes she is out of a job the sad thing she will be exposed before her political carrier even start it will show how ill prepared she is. Standing on a podium and telling people what they want to hear and raising issues in the house and making headway is two different beast at least if you had win and you went into the house you would have five years to learn the ropes but to just enter the house at that stage was ill advised but hey these people cant seem to do anything right anyway.

Here we go again! The leader cannot see himslef being led by Spaggs John, the biggest, most celebrated incompetent person to serve Dominica at the level of Leader of Opposition Leader. Can you imagine we have a Leader of Opposition who cannot command a decent position in the heirachy of his party. they have relegated him to the position of Vice President,, imagine. What about the Presidency, Political Leader, Deputy political, Leader, General Secretary etc – Vice President of an opposition party in Dominica? What is his role? Absolutely no respect. They are just scared of removing him only for fear of the wrath of the Bawi people

You have much to state if DLP chooses a candidate. Let us hear your views, the truth of the matter, pertaining to her credentials, not mainly as a woman but as a suitable political candidate. The people need to hear and read about it.

That is just the first step for you Monel ,the next giant step is when the people of the St Joseph Constituency endorse you as their next Parliamentary Representative in the next General Election. I wish to congratulate Miss. Monell Williams, excellent choice by UWP Team Dominica’s leader Mr. Lennox Linton .Despite all the political mapuis which has been pelted at Mr. Linton by the Skeritt Administration and supporters, he has always tried to accommodate their wishes. When he was a radio talk show host, they asked him to become a politician, he has done so. They asked him for a plan, he has presented a plan of 5000 jobs in three years. They asked him to return home while over seas on business, so that they could serve him with court papers, he has done so. The criticized him for not having a lady in the Parliament, he has given them Miss Monell Williams. He has done everything Skeritt and DLP have requested. Now is his turn, he wants Skeritt’s job, I hope there will not be a problem when the General Elections are held.

    • Peeping Tom
      June 29, 2014

I wonder what this “more debate in the House” means.

      1. Monelle will insist that the UWpwee team cancel its strategy of boycotts and remain in the House to debate? This would certainly raise the amount of time spent debating.
      2. Monelle will somehow persuade the lawmakers to create rules that allow her, specifically, more speaking time so that she can “debate”.
      3. The UWPwee team in the House was asleep all along and so, now that Monelle is there we will now have “debate” from the blues. (Of course, if this is what she means she would only be confirming what we already know, that the blues were usually absent and when they were there they were either noisy and disruptive or superficial in their contributions.)

All what you have said is true. What really does
monelle mean, and does that reflect on the DLP or the UWP. Because if there wasn’t debate in the house before is not the fault of the DLP. If the Opposition doesn’t participate in discussion, doesn’t bring ideas forward, in all, doesn’t do what they are being paid to do in the House of Parliament, then that comment that Monelle made about ‘there will b debate now’.. only reflects that this woman is going to come in here and do better that the existing senators and parl reps for the UWP has done. You are so engulfed in a them and us tug of war, you don’t even realize that this comment does not reflect bad on the DLP, but on the UWP. Monelle is proclaiming herself as the ‘Savior’ of the UWP.

Don’t put blight on yourself . The lady has three mouths to feed . Monelle is a child of God too. Politics have distorted your mind . Shame on you .
