Students visit with an elderly man

The Student Council at the North East Comprehensive School (NECS) for the academic year 2015-2016 undertook a number of community outreach activities as part of its action plan for the year.

During Term 3, focus was on the elderly in the school’s catchment area dubbed as Elderly Connection Program.

This initiative requires members of the Student Council, to visit an elderly citizen identified between Calibishie and the Kalinago Territory, during the weekend to establish a rapport with these stewards of the community. A small package containing useful commodities and food items is also presented to the senior. Items are collected from staff, students and contributions made by the school.

The village council of each community is first contacted to assist in the selection of the most suitable individual. The first visit took place in April 2016, at Woodford hill, where Mr. Jafette Wallace was surprised and ecstatic about meeting and interacting with the students.

Subsequently, on Saturday June 4, 2016, an elderly of the community of Calibishie was benefitted by this wholesome experience when the students visited Mr. Maclean Royer who was elated by the fact that he “got to know” the students.

In July, 2016, an elderly in the community of Wesley, will be visited.

The North East Comprehensive School Student Council seeks to continue its collaboration with the communities through the Elderly Connection Program and other such activities in the upcoming school year. It is expected that greater assistance, whether tangible or intangible would be provided to the individuals. This will create a greater impact on the individuals and the communities by extension while the enriching experience will influence our youth to be a more sensitive and charitable generation.

This initiative promotes the school’s approach to better facilitate student empowerment, leadership, parental involvement and community participation in developing students holistically. It has been fully endorsed and supported by the management and staff of the North East Comprehensive School. The student council comprises of the Headboy, Headgirl and the prefects of the school and is guided by Ms. Lucien Alexander, their liaison teacher on staff.

The Student Council also initiated a Character Counts Day at the school. On the last Thursday of each month in Term 3, focus was placed on a particular character pillar (e.g. Respect, Responsibility, Citizenship, etc). Staff and students were encouraged to wear the colour that represents each pillar to school and a variety of activities were done at school to influence students to emulate these characteristics.

It’s amazing that when persons do bad, individuals are quick to throw the stones, yet when good is being done, those negative individuals still look to criticize. The students are doing a wonderful job and they should keep it up….. encourage them, the school and the principal who must have been the driving force behind this activity. Don’t discourage. We need other schools to follow. We need to see our students bring forth change. And to disgusted…you appear to be a teacher there and I guess a statistician. It’s a shame when people bring down their own organization because of their opinions. At the end of the day, if the school fails, guess what, you did too…smh! Go students!!!!!!

to the students well done. unfortunately the school’s leadership seems to be lacking as he continues to lead from the back and not the front. our school needs more than just these superficial activities, our school deserves more from it’s leader. the fight continues, who feels it knows it.

Congratulations Nort East Comprehensive. Was this part of your community service for graduation requirements? Would have liked to have a brief description of the task you accomplished.

    Wish you the best.
