New president to be elected Monday

Charles Savarin

Dominica will have a new president on Monday and it appears Charles Savarin will be the one in that post.

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, confirmed on Thursday morning that Savarin had resigned as minister of national security.

He also said that Savarin is the next government’s nominee for president of Dominica and elections will take place on Monday, September 30 in parliament.

“We expect the inauguration of the next president to take place on the 1st of October, 2013,” the prime minister said on state-owned DBS Radio on Thursday morning.

Skerrit also said Jennifer Wallace Lafond, his previous nominee, withdrew because of “personal challenges.”

“Unfortunately she could not proceed forward,” he said without elaborating.

You are smiling in this picture, Savarin but I am absolutely sure it’s not you who is going to be elected. Dominican people are fed up with this monkey circus orchestrated by this PM.

If the UWP was interested in the constitution they would follow the constitution an nominate someone else if they disagree with the governments nominee.

The UWP is simple trying to undermine the constitution.

Any right thinking Dominican just needs to visit the official website of the President of Dominica to determine if Savarin qualifies. Visit http://presidentoffice.gov.dm/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3:the-personality-of-the-president&catid=15&Itemid=2. If Mr Savarin is considered non-partisan, then all pastors and priests are atheists.

Dominicans believe what you want, but there was not one President of Dominica who was not elected because of party support. They aaallllllll were supporters of the government who nominated them. Don’t be fooled by politicians. The Freedom Party did it, The UWP did it and now the Labour Party is doing it.

but they were never minister of a party, always a retired civil servant someone who served the country as a senior officer. Someone who was objective.. Think of the past presidents -Sir Clarence Signoret, even Shaw who was UWP was good – he was never on political platform he was a support but he was never on platform and on radio show giving opposition maypwie like Savarin when he teamed up with Austrie

    September 26, 2013

Please be advised that I am a labourite no more. My government is doing everything it can so as to be rejected at the polls whenever the next general election is called. They have shamed us the supporters and this time I am putting my country before party and in the interest of Dominica I will join any group to undo what I so regretfully did when I voted this DLP in. Dominica I am sorry for what I have put you through with that decision and I will now join ALL the patriots both here and abroad in righting that wrong. Charlo will be an albatross around their necks and a constant reminder to the voting public that these guys must be discarded at the polls. According to Comrade Floyd Capitolin, “he fooled me three times”.

Change is really no option at this time but a must.

I heard talk about Brian from some of the opposition supporters.

why haven’t the opposition nominate Brian?

you all don’t nominate but when the PM does you complain. the Pm so far selected 3 nominee’s and every one of them the opposition had a problem with them.

This clearly confirms to all of us that our young PM is off his mind and like King Saul, he will do anything to ensure that Dominica goes down with him.
You mean Charles Savrin for president? OMG we in trouble. The same savrin that killed the same DLP for almost 20 yrs? Are you referring to the same person that Miss Charles could not trust and did not want to hold any leadership role in her administration? The same savrin that is responsible for Breezees Mart to close down? That same Savrin that has contested several elections both in Roseau and Portsmouth and if he won once never won a second time? Boy you sick mr. Pm and need to be flown to the US for emergency evaluation. If your previous nominee ABK was rejected by the public you should know that Mr. Savrin is hated more.
Is it that you just could not find a suitable candidate in Dominica to fill the post? Or is it that you just want to insult us all? If what you are looking for is in a nominee is a person that will be loyal to you then why not nominate Evangelist Peter R Augustine, a former school teacher for many years? Or better yet, pas. BJ who is from Viellecase himself and taught for many years? Even if they both have their personal issues, generally speaking they are both popular.
Anyway, if you really make Charles Savrin our president, I can bet every penny in my account that it will be fastest way of getting rid of you and the DLP. Just mark my words

I have a few concerns and questions!! (1) Why does the PM as head of the country not inform the people of Dominica as to his intentions for nominee for President? Instead of nominating who he want, then inform Dominicans? Is like Who Vex Lost! (2) Why isnt the PM telling us Dominicans why Mr E. Williams is not suitable to be nominated as President for the next five years, after serving for a few months? (3) If the PM think he is doing the honourable thing on behalf of Dominica and Dominicans by nominating who he would like to be President, why isnt he informing the Opposition Leader of his intentions, and ask them to present a name for President? and (4) Why havent the Opposition nominate someone as President, why are they reluctant to do so? (5) Doesnt the PM know that Mr C. Savarin is not a healthy man? though one would think he is well versed and knowledgeable in the political arena and the Civil Service on a whole, but the man is not well, Dominica deserve better at this time.

Mr. Savarin is known as one of the most partisan, divisive and hated politician in the land.

The Dominica Skerritor Party DSP is currently under tremendous pressure ever since Skerrit ignored the process to nominate a president ninety days from the day the office became vacant as prescribed by the “SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND,” the constitution.

The nation must come together in large masses to demonstrate against this injustice in the land. I firmly believe that the DSP is in its last throw of a “HAIL MARY” in its undemocratic operation.

I really don’t understand what the problem is…To me the president should be some one who is about to leave the work force and is getting ready to retire..What was wrong with Mrs Knight as president or Jennifer? maybe Edison should make himself available…I think Savarin is a good choice I think it’s an indication of retirement..See what happened to the DPP? before the man started work he had to call it off because of all the negatives about the man..When will we stop? Lets hope that when Dominican of high esteem is chosen to take up some high office some where in the world that he or she is not vilified like the way we do here…The past is the past with mr Savarin. When all of us were frustrated and all kind of laws by the government at the time were passed, we all came together to change things…There is work in the country we are just to damn lazy to do it.We all want to work in an office playing games or spending time on chat networks wasting time..The farms are being utilized by Haitians and they are making enough money to send to their families in Haiti..If one of us get to be successful we look for some way to pull them down..What I see is that we hate to see people being successful in this country..Mr.Brisbane crucified himself. You can’t be openly critical of any government when you are in business, you will be punished some way..God bless Dominica

the president, for now, as very little power but the constitution could be changed giving the president a lot more power so that together with the prime minister and elected members of the ruling party they can basically do what they want legally and too hell with us,just look at world history and this is how a democratic elected leader can slowly and legally turn himself into a dictator,i do not know if this is the plan but as citizens we must be cautious.
for now a president is basically a friend of the truth and someone who is the watchdog for the nations constitutional interests,as well as cutting ribbons and giving speeches, the question we must ask is if Mr savrin is the man to tick all the boxes and if the answer is no,then we have a democratic right to at least question the appointment,it is our country after all is said and done,

When will politicians learn they are here to serve the better interest of the country not their party??
When will politicians realize that their power comes from empowering the people and not enforcing their will??

When will Politicians think as mature men and women and not as vindictive children??

When will Labor,UWP , Freedom develop a wholistic plan and come together for the betterment of the lives of Dominicans!

Mr. Savarin you are clearly “partisan” and it’s MY OPINION that you will preside over the country with a bias towards those that put you into the office of president!

Mr. Skerrit please put someone that is neutral and get over yourself!

Charles Savarin was a government scholar from Portsmouth attended and completed the Dominica Grammar School. He sat Alevels and did very well also he taught at the DGS. He joined the trade union movement and attended university in the united kingdom, was the Ambassador under the DAME and you know you had to be qualified ask LENNOX he should know about that. Has held many high level positions in the public service. the ONLY reason the opposition is crying foul is because they will not be able to push this president around. charlo help people like you today to seat behind your computer and say what you want. when he was negotiating for the people of Dominican, all edo and the rest enjoyed the forty days strike. had he not do what he did, the madness that some of do, and say is freedom of speech would not have that privilege. He did not put weapons in any bodies hand and say go fight. He was negotiating on every bodies behalf, and after the strike everybody was happy to stay home and still get paid. check the history. he did not ask defense force to open fire on people and kill young timothy, the only memory Dominicans had to remind them Edison came and whip it out. So if we want to blame, blame ourselves, because we all enjoyed what he did at the time. as the good book always say, those without and absolutely no sin cast the first stone.

What is worse about this situation is that the PM continues to disrespect our constitution and he is now insulting Dominicans.

Once again there is no consultation with the Leader of Opposition. The PM is not even allowing the Leader of the Opposition the opportunity to disagree with him this time. No 14 days for Charlo-it is straight to election.

Unlike Mr. Williams and Ms.Lafond, who did not deserve this kind of row-row appointment, Charles Saverin deserves it but not Dominica.

Enough is enough. Will Charlo bring us another 1979 with him on the receiving end of the coolwash brigade this time. What goes around usually comes around.

It would appear that Alix and Jennifer Wallace were nothing but smoke screens.

Indeed Mr. Skerritt contends he has executed the proverbial ‘coup de grace’on UWP, however it appears more like ‘hari-kari’ on Labour.

According to them he instigated the whole process…it was like when hurricane david pass everything was from bottom up again. IS that what you are hoping for your children and their children and their cousins if they have any. A good man you say he put a curse on Brisbane business now almost 500 of us out of work…you think he’s going to offer to pay the bills and the money we owe to the bank for the roof over our head.
