REVISED: Opposition Leader’s statement on Labour Party’s “boycott” call

Opposition Leader Hector John

Following the public condemnation by the Political Leader of the United Workers Party Hon Ron Green and other Dominicans of the statement made by Hon Charles Savarin, seeking the boycott of O D Brisbane and Sons, it is very disturbing that the Dominica Labour Party and Government would endorse such a maliciously calculated statement.

It is clear that the members of the government are manifesting and upholding suppression of dissenting and objective voices in our democracy. Such a frivolous and irresponsible statement coming from the Minister of Labour and National Security is setting the stage for further economic decline, loss of jobs and possibly civil unrest.

Mr. Jerry Brisbane was expressing his given rights as a citizen of Dominica as enshrined in the Dominica Constitution. Hon Savarin’s statement was made in the presence of the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, CARICOM’s lead spokesman on labour and the free movement of people within the region and Mr. Eddie Lambert, the National Authorizing Officer for the European Union. Both gentlemen gave credence to the destructive statement by not immediately asking him to retract his comment and to issue an apology. They have confirmed their postures as huge parasites feeding off a decaying system.

In this regard, the Parliamentary Opposition places on record its condemnation of the statement released by the DLP/Government in support of Mr. Savarin’s remark. The government has neglected its responsibility to ensure the protection and advancement of every institution and every citizen of Dominica.

We call on Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to remove Charles Savarin as senator and a Member of Parliament. His comment as a minister has no place in a civilized society and should not be allowed to go unpunished. The government should be working with all organizations towards developing a more productive country.

Supporting this destructive action of Mr. Charles Savarin is detrimental to the atmosphere of free expression of entrepreneurs and of positive Dominicans who speak truth to power.

Hon. Hector John
Leader oF the Opposition.

You referring to Brisbane and his backward and treacherous action?
What proposals he put forward for the furtherance of Dominica or it’s good standing in the international community?

Actually he’s probably done the ruling party a favour as the recipients of Brisbane’s letter probably feel pity for the PM having to put up with such ignorant people and are probably wondering why the PM takes it so lightly as the recipients would have such people put under house arrest if not prison if such a thing happened in their country.

many said by Brizze and charlo, this is democracy, there is no need to cry over spilt milk. if i was mr brisebane i would use the opportunity to capitalize on the current issue to maximize profit for my business and create more jobs for Dominicans because this issue is giving good publicity. when crysler developed i very cheat car compared to bmw the sales grew by 100% within weeks but bmw presents the potential customers with a 25% increase in the cost of its products and gave the customer valuable reason why they should own a bmw. brizze need to think outside of the box and move on. there is no need to cry over this. In this society it is not about changing the world to suit u but changing ur styles to adopt to the environment.

We must have facts before we going runni9ng our mouth and pointing fingers at each other. We are ALL Dominicans. Can we at least be respectful even when we disagree?

***CIVIL UNREST????????     READ THIS PIECE AGAIN FROM HECTOR JOHN***

Such a frivolous and irresponsible statement coming from the Minister of Labour and National Security is setting the stage for further economic decline, loss of jobs and possibly civil unrest“.

Hector John, you’re really not a skillful politician. You’re certainly giving Mr.Savarin too much importance in the eyes of dominicans. It’s not like the minister is a “beloved and trusted”  individual. Do you really think the vast majority of dominicans will listen to charles savarin or even carry out his pathetic little wishes??

You mention civil unrest? ??? Again……..  that’s foooolish!!!!  Because now you’re implying that dominicans are ignorant and sensless and that we can easily be pushed into violence!

Besides….. this issue happened weeks ago.

Where were you when Josophine Gabriel & Co announced that they will now be a DISTRIBUTOR!!  instead of a “producer”  for coke drinks!!! That should have sent urgency and shock  waves through your little veins!!   Sadly, it did not!

But NO!!  Instead of you speaking up on the Josopine Gabriel issue!!  You did just the opposite and gave priority and importance to the….. “Charlie-Brisbane” Carnival!!

Skillful politicians know when to pick the right fights!!

    Does anyone get my point???

I do not support any call for any boycott by any one of  any business enterprise in Dominica.  I therefore do not support the call to boycott the business place of OD Brisbane and Sons/Brizee’s Mart or any other business.

As we approach the advent season…I am calling on all Dominicans of all political and all religiousto begin to reflect on our reason for being here.  We all have a higher calling and we must all remember is pass we passing.  Let’s learn to live in peace and harmony not merely for our own sake but for the sake of the generations who will be replacing us…

      November 26, 2010

We are indeed passing.  Therefore we have to make the most with the allotted life and time that God is granting us.  We should spend it wisely and fruitfully and not waste time.  There are times I wonder if politics is not a waste of time.  Note what is occurring in Dominica. It is not a good example which is also displayed to the world.

Life is short and death is sure
The hour of death remains obscure
A soul you (we) have the only one
If that be lost all hope is gone
Waste not time while time shall last
For after death ’tis ever past

And Heaven or Hell your destiny.

what is going on here? does that mean that mr, brisbane has freedom of speech, well let me not say speech but rather writing, and poorchalo doesnot even have fredom of speech? nonsence,at least charlo SPOKE and unless smeone taped it,then it isg one,but mr brisbane WROTE and it is there as a witness to future leaders of the countries he wrote to so somebody tell me whih is more detriment mr savrin,s words can hurt mr brisbane and maybe a few dominicans, but mr brisbane,s letter can andwill hurt dominica now and also in the future, infact we are not even aware of the impact of that letter, so dominican,s judge the consequencies.

    November 25, 2010

The response given by the Hon. Hector John is not surprising and it is the same  consistent   Political rhetoric blindly ignoring the facts and the truth. The question i would like to pose to Hon. Hector John,  the letters written by  Mr Brisbane and the response given to the letters by Hon. Minister Charles Savarin which one  is setting the stage for further economic decline  in loss of jobs and Development, and that is the question we should be all asking. It is not about free expression under the constitution, of course we know he Mr Brisbane was not denied any right to express himself, it all comes down to the facts of the letters, are the facts truthful and correct in what was written and if so where is the evidence to back up  the claims made about mismanagement and accountability in these letters,  let us not forget  freedom of expression comes with responsibility.
One of the   things that  makes it so laughable in this statement is the words used by Mr John e,g his reference to Quote “The Parliamentary Opposition places on record its condemnation of the statement released  by the DLP/Government in support of Mr Savarin’s remark”. Well here we have someone proudly espousing  his position boastfully  as “Parliamentary Opposition”  but does not want to attend the meetings held in Parliament prefer to boycott, prefer to make statements on the record  in the press and the so called peoples Parliament.
In regards to the comment made by Minister Savarin,  yes, he has a right to his opinion  and he spoke his mind,  but the only  difference  is,  Minister Charles Savarin is a Public servant and should act  responsible before making comments, is the comment wrong yes.  As for Jerry he has a right to free expression, but that right also comes with responsibility.

As I have always stated I am not for the DLP or UWP or Freedom.  So I can give my unbias view
    and ask the following questions:

Why did Mr John not make a statement directly after the event.  Is he not meant to be the LEADER.
In all other political parties (world wide) the leader speaks on behalf of his/her members.

Why has the UWP got a Political Leader and a Leader of the Party.  Can someone please explain the difference(s) and the exact role of said positions.

Why are the persons involved (both have overstepped the mark) not man enough to sit down and iron out their differences, apologise to each other, thus setting a good example to the Dominican people and showing us that we can  settle our differences by talking .

Why is the nation allowing  BOTH sides to take this further by jumping on the bandwagon. Is our lust for gossip and scandal so craved that we want this to continue.

Come election day, I want all sides to give me solid grounds why I should vote for them.  I want a party that I can honestly say is working  for the good of Dominica.  So far it’s a one horse race, DLP.  At least I’d know who the jockey is.

@dominican in cuba or usa, let me get this straight. Are you suggesting that because Brisbane is a private citizen who represents himself, he is immune from criticism? He took it on himself to write the these governments  and NGOs as if he was speaking for the rest of us, and we have to just shut up? Give me a break man. Savarin’s statement concerning the boycott was ill conceived, no doubt about that but I don’t believe we just have to sit back and let Brisbane of the hook.

Same difference…  Charlo should not have said what he did as the minister for labour. Jerry is a little too fleared-up about himself. Respect people if you want respect. Say Charlo should be punished for speaking his mind, why shouldn’t Jerry? Mr. ODB wants to tell the Government what to do and when. Charlo’s spoken words can only cause limitted damage to Dominicans but Mr. ODB’s actions can cause us a bright future.
People we have our own minds. There is no law which says you must do as the politicians say or advise. You want to shop at ODB fine. You don’t want to, that’s fine too. The final decision is yours. ODB wants the DLP out, cool. That is just not your say. So what happen, only the opposition can speak their minds without fear?

Are we as Dominicans suppose to want a leader who chooses to condemn wrong only when it suits his person? What makes Spags better than Skeritt?

I cannot believe that he would come out and defend Brisbane while saying that it is his right as a Dominican to express his views. Can’t the same not be said about Charlo? Afterall, he is a man too, and many a times, people err and make mistakes.

So why is it that Brisbane can write to the other countries as a Dominican Citizen – with so much freedom of speech, and Charlo can’t do the same?

Are you going to say because Charlo is a Minister? Well, what about the fact that Mr Brisbane is a prominent business man?

So Spags….are you telling me, that if you get into power, you would gladly welcome any letters of negativity against your governnment? What if they were false and or malicious? Would my right to freedom of speech be an excuse?

One must remember that we all have rights and freedoms, yet, these rights and freedoms can be contained within a free and justified society……. there are limitations on our rights …and so, there are limittions to freedom of speech.

Both  honorable gentle men were not wise, in writing letters to helping and friendly countries, and calling on people to boycot a local business. Mr. John has done a poor job in being one sided. Both men should be called upon to make a public apology to the nation, and move on.

Some people feel that they are too big to say sorry to the country for the foolishness.

The  Opposition Leader and Prime Minister should both say sorry to the country for not telling their men that they were wrong with their statements.

Mr. John, you need to demonstrate to us that the UWP is a viable alternative to the present administration. You need to start showing us that if the UWP was to attain power tomorrow, for whatever reason, you guys can hit the ground running on issues such as the world economic recession and its impact on Dominica, unemployment, corruption, crime, high utility bills and the like. What legislation are you going to implement to tackle some of these pressing issues?

Mr John, I’m so glad that you are alive. I thought you were not alive because your voice was not heard at all. YOU are just too late now and by you opening your mouth now, just reminds me of how confused you all are and how you all are just not up to date with the cry of the people.

Mr. Opposition leader, it is good that you have finally come out as such to address issues affecting my beautiful island.

You may not have the finacially power to push Eddo and Ron aside but you are an elected parlimentarian and I know that you have a very big mouth. So you have to tell Eddo and them that they have to give you more time in the public lime light to express your thoughts. Speak out more!!

This is not the only issue affecting Dominica today as far as the Gov’t is concerned so come out and let us hear you, bidding contracts, road and airport projects, under table deals where contractors give Gov’t ministers and friends money back when they get a project, this is where most of the airport monies went, back in the hands of ministers. Many police officers are now rich due to shady actions, lack of freedom of speech. I can go on all day writing about the ills withDominica Gov’t , and I know you have evidence that these things are happening, So as the opposition Leader you have to take the lead so Dominicans can follow.

Very disappointed in the bias statement heard from the opposition. I believe as an opposition party you should be able to be practical in casting judgements. There are two wrongs in this entire fiasco, not only Savarins’. If somebody is stretching the joke too far its Mr Brisbane! As a Dominican i would never go as far as he did. I am smart enough to realise the consequences of my actions and in going so far, clearly my best interests are not Dominica but some personal vendetta i have against the Labour Party Administration. I can Atleast read between the lines… maybe some of us should too

You are late bro! You react like a follower, not a leader.
