Parliament to elect a President next week

His Excellency Charles A. Savarin is the sitting President of Dominica

Parliament will be convening on Monday to elect a President and it appears that sitting one, Charles Angelo Savarin will be getting the job again for the next five years.

By law, a President is nominated by the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition and elected by the House of Assembly.

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit said the government has written and taken all the steps to nominate Savarin as its nominee for consideration by the Parliament but there was no joint nominee by him as Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, Lennox Linton.

“I wrote to the Leader of the Opposition on August 3rd, 2018, indicating to him the interest of the government to nominate Mr. Charles Savarin and seeking his concurrence,” Skerrit stated. “He responded to say that give him 15 more days again, two weeks, as he will need to go across the country soliciting ideas and names and suggestions but he never got back to me.”

He said the government is proceeding to parliament, since there is no joint nominee, to elect Savarin again as the next President of Dominica.

The media was already invited last Friday to attend the swearing-in of Savarin to take place at the Goodwill Parish Hall on Tuesday, October 2 at 10:00 am.

The President is the Head of State of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The Office of the President was established by Section 18 of the Dominica Constitution Order 1978.

The President is elected by the House of Assembly and holds office for a term of five years.

Savarin was last elected on Monday, September 30, 2013.

As a student back in the late seventies this was the first man I knew that started the process of sinking Dominica..today am 53 yrs and my country had never recovered..why should we have this unpatriotic man being elected once more as president?.. please Dominica do better than this. Use the 360 plus thousand dollars and help the poor ppl of my homeland or use it to pay down the national debt. The prime minister will be traveling to Canada next month and I know he will be telling dominicans to continue helping their country. But please mr PM start with Charles he does not even work as hard as you to deserve that paycheck

DNO making it sound sooooo real. Check their headline: “Parliament to elect a President next week”. Somebody that does know what’s happening here will see that and think things are actually as they are seen. But the fact is Parliament is one man, Roosevelt Skerrit. Cabinet is one man Roosevelt Skerrit. Government is one damn man, Roosevelt Skerrit and even Dominica seems to be one man Roosevelt Skerrit . Dominica is not let’s say like the US, where Trump might want something but the Senate and Congress might not give it to him. In fact Skerrit has already chosen Charles Savarin and even if Ian or other members of the cabinet don’t like his choice THE MUST put their tail where it belongs and pretend that they want Chalo. That’s why I agree with Linton not to even nominate someone else because all Skerrit will do is start to victimize that person and his family for the rest of his time in office

Sad to say, the “somebody” who does not know what’s happening in Dominica is you, your partisan political beliefs and ignorance regarding our Parliamentary system of Government have driven you to write such nonsense. As to you agreeing with Linton, you have a right to agree with whoever you want but you will never know much from people who agree with.

Sad to say the somebody that knows what’s happening in Dominica is you and your political friends but you choose to ignore it for a few coins and some worthless promises from your master. It’s you and your political friends I hold in no small part responsible for what happens in Dominica right now. As mentioned before, in many countries you and your political friends would be brought before court for treason once this farce has finally ended. You guys make me sick!!!

What a wonderful way to use a $27 million dollar loan Roosevelt Skerrit & Co. To build a state house for a man & his wife to live in. You really have your priorities straight Roosevelt.

    Labbouuuuuuurrrrr…………

    Laboouuuuuuurrrr……………

So the Dominican taxpayer has to pay back this $27 million dollar loan for the state house which primarily functions as the dwelling house for Charles Savarin to live in eh.

Boy, boy, boy…………..what really is wrong with Dominicans?

Before you ask what is really wrong with Dominicans. Why don’t you examine the nonsense you have written. Do you really believe that the State House was built to function primarily as a dwelling house for Charles Savarin to live, wow, is this what your political partisan beliefs have done to your reason. Just to let you know the State House also houses The Public & Police Service Commission, Electoral Commission and Integrity in Public Office Commission and also amenities for a conference room. It has been 6yrs now move on, It shows you have nothing worthy to say.

Can Dominica ever achieve its fullest potential with these people in positions of power and influence? We have a lying and insensitively corrupt leader, a hateful and potty-mouthed senior advisor, a grossly incompetent and venomous Speaker, a docile and subservient President, an unaccomplished and servile Chief of Police and a Cabinet of spineless, yes men and women. Dominica will forever remain a land of deprivation and insufferable hardship if these misfits are allowed to continue their stranglehold on the governance of this country.

The PM has taken a lot of good things he met in our constitution to the parliament and changed them. But if there is one thing I would like to see him take to the Parliament to change, is that of presidency because a president is not needed. In a true democracy a president is needed because he ought to be the umpire in the matchup between the government, the opposition and what is in the best interest of the people. Charles Savarin is definitely not that person as the facts will show that he is a player on the government team and that cannot be good for our country whether we are supporters of the DLP, UWP, DFP or other. A president ought to be seen as the father of the nation that is fair to all of his children and Savarin is far from that. The reason why we are in such a big mess is because the president, the Attorney General, the police commissioner and to a lesser extent the House Speaker are all supposed to be independent, for the wellbeing of the nation. They are their for the PM

  6. I Must Admit
    September 29, 2018

Do we really need a president in Dominica? In fact do we even need 18 government ministers, when Skerrit has demonstrated that he is the minister of everything? Skerrit said Dominica does not need an opposition because all they doing is eat tax payers money. But let’s put our politics aside for a while and be real people. I can see and understand the necessity of an opposition because everyone must be represented and the concerns of those that don’t support the government must be heard. Furthermore, the job of any opposition is to keep the government on track and force them to deliver. Even if I am not a UWP I must admit the opposition is doing their job because had it not been for this opposition Skerrit maybe would have sold us. The monthly salary and expense of the president is sufficient to pay the salaries of all the opposition and I just can’t see his worth. To me Savarin is either an advisor to the PM or their to protect him and as such, he is not needed.

I wonder if this ‘President’ ever thought what would happen to him when Skerrit is thown out as PM. He and for that matter the Speaker and the Ministers would have no future in DA. I guess they never thought of that?!

What on earth is going on with PM Skerritt n this government? This is the best candidate they can find for president? This grandpa must go into retirement where he can enjoy his big money. The presidency is not for old, tired, bias, aging grandpa’s. Grandpa Challo, do yourself a favour, one term was good enough, let some brilliant n smart person be the president. But in anyway, being president in Dominica is just ceremonial. But grandpa its time to move out of the Palace, go in your own house. Dominicans had enough of you

Dominica will always look like a God forsaken place and remain at the bottom rung of the ladder in the sub region as long as Skerrit and the DLP maintain power. The Senior Counsel (Tony) is 60+years pregnant with hate. His presence in government heavily contributes to the current pervasive, hyper-partisan political tribalism that has become the biggest stumbling block to progress. He is the de facto leader of the government. Savarin is uniquely unqualified for the position he now holds. That position of President of the country, although mostly ceremonial, can be effectively used as a platform for unity and cohesion in society, for aspirational and inspirational purposes, for the dissemination of goodwill. There is a darkening crowd hovering over the country incapacitating the advancement of the vast majority of the citizens. Skerrit is simply out of his depth, he doesn’t have the acumen to maneuver the ship out of turbulent waters. The leadership is found wanting.

Dominica do not need a president, a poor like country Dominica cannot afford to give a man a $27 million dollar palace and $30 thousand dollars every month while half of the population do not have a roof over their heads.

  12. "Go to Hell "
    September 28, 2018

Skerrit told us to ” go to hell” but you think he was not referring to the hell he was building in Dominica, with Skerrit is PM, Charles Savarin is president, Alix Boyd Knight is speaker and Tony Astaphan is his advisor ? Is hell worse than the Skerrit empire in Dominica? I know he’ll is a place where Satan rules and God’s presence is absent but is Dominica any different? Well the difference is in hell nobody will go to church and use God’s name in their evil, whereas in vain these people go to church and mention God’s name in hypocrisy. But their heart is hard and doing evil is a light thing for them

I know Isaac Baptist is president of the UWP but is Charles Angello Savarin the president of the DLP? If not why not make the current dlp president the President or, just make Charles Savarin president of the DLP and have him to sit in the $27 million dollar White House? What’s the difference between Charles Savarin and a person that is concerned about the political affairs of the DLP? Make no mistake about it, Charles Saver is NOT the president of Dominica, but rather the president of Skerrit and the DLP, just as Justina Charles told us his predecessor was a dlp politician, working in the interest of of Skerrit. I don’t even believe the current president of the DLP would allow Skerrit to do what Savarin allowing him to do. Linton and the UWP should just walk out and let Skerrit and his whalers vote for Savarin. It’s a waste of tax payers money to pay a salary to Skerrit’s president. These guys have destroyed everything in Dominica and UWP supporters should stop pay taxes

People with their ears to the ground say it is $36,000.00 plus perks. That Kind of money could easily take care of 15 families @$2500/month.

This guy Just like Skerrit knew what they were about in their respective eras.

They kept their eyes on the prize all the way. If the D/can population wasn’t part selfish, part dumb …& had other interest apart from sewo-ing, this situation would never have occurred.
These guys in office like ways the opposition should not be dog catchers let alone boy scout leaders.
We have so many studiated people who lack honesty that make them uneducated.

Does Dominica have a President? Sounds like news to me. There have been many traumatic events in the country over the past five years and the person occupying the position as head of State has not acted impartially and as a father figure to calm the nation and people of all political stripes. I know that the position of President is ceremonial but it’s real. I hoped that the government side would allow for the opposition to consult with the other political parties in trying to get a person of consensus who can help unify this decided country. When Charles Saverin was ambasador to Brussels he was technically on a long vacation away from home now as President he’s on a long vacation but this time at home. Skerritt delay this nomination procedure and allow for a person agreeable to a wider cross section of Dominica. That’s what the country needs.

The President of any country should be a man or woman of unblemished character who possesses impeccable integrity and is unquestionably impartial. Can this be said of Mr. Savarin? Mr. Skerrit has vandalized all the revered institutions in Dominica by his partisan political appointments. The Police Force, the Speaker of Parliament, the Head of the Electoral Office ,just to name a few, have all being tainted by Mr. Skerrit’s unhygienic, hyper-partisanship politics. These political appointees give him unwavering support to enable him to retain political power and feather his own nest. Every time he makes a pronouncement, he deems it necessary, to punch the Opposition below the belt. This man destroys and corrupts all he has inherited from the State. Everything he has touched has failed miserably because he obstinately refuses to yield to common sense.

walking around where? you sound foolish. he not anywhere looking for anybody. from since 2013 he expressed concern that this man is unfit for the presidency. they made lots of valid suggestions such as Dorothy Levy and they were over powered with “the ayes have it”. so Savarin was installed. savarin did nothing for the 5 years, elections come again and skerrit resubmits the same name. so who ever Linton suggests wil be over powered with “the ayes have it”. sooo he basically want Linton to come up with a name so he can rub it in his face that i discard your candidate- unless this government put country first nothing positive will happen. saverin brought destruction on Dominica for 57 days and his reward is the presidency…. again…..

We all know hahahahahh the one who was acting President when this one was on check up leave for his Heart. Remember him on KiriFM? On the animal show he was losing his voice.
The one am referring to has a British -American accent after his longest stint abroad was in B/dos in the early 60’s on Police basic training. Why not a Bajan accent? In 1997-98 he was asked to resign/retire in the public interest only to resurface 20 yrs later as acting President . Only in DA people! But many of us remember even if some say we have memoire poule’. Two faced peeps are never forgotten we remember them alright!
