Petter Saint Jean shrugs off UWP leadership change

Petter Saint Jean addressing the DLP delegates conference

President of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), Petter Saint Jean, has shrugged off the leadership change in the United Workers Party (UWP) as ‘new wine in old bottles.’

Speaking at a DLP delegates conference in Pointe Michel on Sunday Saint Jean was referring to the passing of the leadership baton in the UWP from Edison James to Lennox Linton in Castle Bruce recently.

“The opposition is deja vu all over again, old wine in new bottles,” Saint Jean, who was reelected President of the DLP, said.

He stated that when Earl Williams became leader of the UWP in 2005 he demanded that prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit step down “even before learning the reigns and the ropes of power.”

“But lo and behold, Earl Williams came with a roar, but you know what, he went out with a whimper,” he said. “That is why I say to you today we have been here before, we have been here, no matter what you hear…”

Saint Jean stated that in 2008 Ron Green was made leader of the UWP and he was defeated twice in La Plain by himself, Petter Saint Jean.

He noted that after the UWP “searched high and low” for a leader looking “for an antidote to the DLP,” the party turned to what he described as “a high school drop out.”

“Lennox Linton is not a member of parliament but he is UWP’s front man on parliamentary matters,” Saint Jean said. “He wants to protest here, he wants to celebrate here but I recall Earl Williams before he came with a roar but he exited the stage with a whimper, like a little cat, and so you know it already Labourites.”

He stated that the DLP is more united than ever and is just waiting ‘for the bell to ring.’

I’m not from Dominica, I have no relatives from here, I can here on holiday about 2 years ago from Canada. I love the beauty of the country, how green and the simplicity of the land, I spent 3 weeks and had a lovely ‘holiday’. I said to myself I will be coming back to this country to live with my wife and raise my 2 children.
We have been living here for about six months now, but have decided to leave at the end of the year. We are leaving because of the government situation. What my wife and I think and feel is that the Labour Government kills the spirit of the land and most of the people on the island.
They don’t love the people and the country, they need the power. We have learned that alot of Dominican need some sort of power, but the government needs it to survive and in order for them to gain that power they fool the people of Dominica with material things, gossip, he say she say. The people feed on that. They love it.
The government has over powered the land.
It like kids on a playground.
Unbelievable, I have never witnessed anything like this.
If the people of Dominica wants to save this country they need to get this government out, and its not just the Prime Minister the the whole lot!
If this country elects this government again the lives of young people especially are in danger.
I now see why alot of Dominican are moving away from there own country.
    Worst government in the Caribbean.
I will miss the nature aspect of it all, and a few friends I have made, but that about all…

Like Reggie said about Mr. Linton, I would like to say, Skerrit Labor Party Government and supporters are giving me a headache. Patter St. Jean has said, he shrugs off the idea of Linton being Leader of the UWP, yet approximately eighty percent of good quality radio and live video streaming time were spent on Mr. Lennox Linton during the DLP Delegate Conference. He talked about Mr. Williams and Mr. Ron Green, Dominicans say, “lightning never strikes the same place twice.”

Not all those who call themselves Christians are genuine and practicing ones at that. Genuine Christians are not blind to the good of what has been done for Dominica. They support a PM that can do something good for the country and nationals. This PM has already shown that he has done just that with more to come. He has proven himself as a capable PM.

I do not think the PM is afraid to debate with this man. He does not want to waste his time and intelligence doing that.
You want them to copycat the bigger countries? If it is not mandatory, he does not have to debate with him.
A leader should be of a certain caliber and should possess certain credentials. Otherwise it will appear that the country is going down the drain under this type of leadership. You will experience this in time.

Dominicans know what are the PM’s plans. They want to know what are the plans of the UWP leader. He does not have to debate with the PM about it. Merely inform Dominicans of his plans. This is good enough for them. Some of them may not be interested in a debate.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the season of lights, it was the epoch of incredulity…” These lines are some of the most famous in English Literature and guess what? … they were written by Charles Dickens, a high school dropout, in his immortal “A Tale of Two Cities.”

In short, Mr. Dickens tale is so much like the present day scene where superlative degrees of comparisons are being made about two leaders, one a college graduate who has declared to wit, that no law, no constitution, can keep him back and the other, who wants to protect the Constitution, described by Petter St. Jean as a high school drop out.”

Dear Minister St. Jean, please do not underestimate the wisdom of high school drop outs. I learned in History a long time ago that Wilbur and Orville Wright, makers of the aeroplane were high school dropouts who never formally studied engineering. Walt Disney the man behind the Disney empire was a high school drop out. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most famous US Presidents and greatest orators in history left school at age 12. Compare him to President Bush who graduated from Yale University. Sir Richard Branson, head honcho of Virgin Airline and Virgin Records, one of the best managers and one of the richest men in the world does not have a high school diploma on his wall because he did not graduate. Bill Cosby dropped out of school in the 10th grade. Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb was a high school drop out, as was famous diplomat, inventor, and key writer of the US Constitution, Benjamin Franklin. Country Music Star Tammy Wynette, a high school dropout, gave us the immortal” Stand by your Man.”

Stand by your man with the degree Mr. St Jean but don’t shrug off the other man because he may not have a degree. I understand you had a dream once about the political scene that almost became a trademark. It’s your turn for a vision now. As a Church man you should be aware of the Holy Book chapter that says the young shall see dreams and the old shall see visions…

Erasmus B Black. If Charles Dickens were living in these times, do you believe he would tell his children not go to school, because others did well without finishing school?

Would you give your own children that advice? And if not, why not? If the Opposition were to win the elections would you advice them to close all schools because schooling is unnecessary because you can get by without it?

Go and tell that to the employers and the people looking for a job and the requirements the job postings are requesting in Dominica, and the other O.E.C.S countries or in the larger countries.

Suddenly, Laborites who didn’t care about Ron Green’s Ivy League education (Columbia University- Obama alma mater), or Pierre Charles’ lack thereof, want to compare Lennox CV to Skerritt.

St. Jean, are you serious? Did you say DLP is more united now than before? Boss, I was a laborite and I know what is happening in the camp. I still have my ‘in house’ briefing, and therefore I know what is happening just as when I was in there. I know the DLP is in serious in house trouble. It is very, very, divided as many of your key supporters are not at the delegates conference. Not only that but several of the top boys are upset about the manner in which Skerrit got married and they referred to it as “Embarrassing and childish.” I would like to call some names and ask about them but I know DNO will not post. St. Jean behave yourself because I will join the rest of you preachers and tell the public what I know and you all will be embarrassed.

Mr. Saint Jean, You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You made certain statements that you need to check yourself on.
    1. You referred to Lenox’ election as “Old wine in new bottles.” Unfortunately, in your case, you have become “Old wine in a broken bottle.” In other words as a fellow Christian and preacher, you have allowed yourself to be part of the most corrupt government in the Caribbean and your Christian bottle can hold no wine.

2.I would feel much better to be a high school drop out who has taken time to educate themselves, than to be in a Christian preacher, who upholds unrighteousness, and is believed to be part of the corrupt team. 1Timothy 6:5 tells us that we should not be blinded by the theory of “Gain is godliness: and from such we are commanded to “Withdraw thyself.”

Saint Jean, You upset Lenox called a protest to ensure ABK is not made president by Skerrit. How embarrassing preacher St. Jean! After all, you should be the one to lead that protest instead of Lenox. You are the so called believer and man of God. Remember what you told me sometime in 1999 about that same Alix Boyd Knight? But you know, back then you were a man of integrity but because you have dumped integrity and your Christian conviction in a cabbage bin called “CURRUPTION”.

  51. September 15, 2013

“A high school drop out” means nothing. People drop out of school for several reasons; some become successful businessmen. “A high school drop out” is not a reason to not vote for someone; some has MORE common sense than those who did finish high school and went on to college. I am not in favor of any party, I am not a party affiliate, but I know we, Dominicans, need IMPROVEMENT in every aspect.

Lennox really need to get a hubby, and Roosevelt need to take a break, go on his honeymoon, or whatever. Dominica is not CHINA, CUBA, VENEZUELA, PANAMA, RUSSIA, JAPAN, The MIDDLE EAST, IRAQ, IRAN, nor anywhere else where ONE PERSON has to RUN the nation as their PRIZE POSSESSION. People, you DO NOT vote for a person because you like him/her, you vote for a person because that person is QUALIFIED for the JOB. CUTTING and PASTING DO NOT MAKE THE GRADE. Is there not anyone else that is MORE QUALIFIED than ROOSEVELT or LENNOX? I AM, but SORRY I am POOR. EDUCATED, QUALIFIED, but POOR, and I am a DUAL CITIZEN, I DO NOT NEED THAT DRAMA.

OOPS, I did not know one had to be a member of parliament to run for office, ONE MORE STRIKE AGAINST ME. Petter, you are redundant, you and the Labourites may be the ones exiting the stage “with a whimper like little cats”.

Nothing personal guys, just my opinion.

So what example are we setting for our children who are in high school, that it is ok to be a drop out f high school and ok to conscientiously deny yourself of going to a structured higher establishment of learning?!
