United Workers Party (UWP) Senator, Danny Lugay, has come under fire from prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, for statements he made at a UWP political meeting in Soufriere last week.
At the meeting Lugay said that that there are some people who “deserve to die” for keeping Dominica back.
“If I wasn’t a believer, I would take out some people in Dominica, you know,” he stated. “My heart is different and that is why I wouldn’t do it, but it have some people that deserve to die in Dominica. Honestly, when you see the sort of things that they do to keep back Dominica.”
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Skerrit labeled the statements as “extraordinary” and “very serious”.
“I have both heard and read the statements by Lugay basically saying that if he was not a believer he would take out some people,” he stated. “We find this extraordinary that people would make this very brazen statement inciting violence against people and literally talking about killing people. At no time have you heard myself or any member of my party speak about violence or encouraging violence.”
Skerrit said Lugay’s statements should be condemned by all Dominicans, including supporters of the UWP.
“I find it extraordinary that they would have taken so much strong offence to Reggie Austrie’s reference to goat meat, and so forth, and a statement made by Danny Lugay, which is supported by Lennox Linton, they are encouraging and inciting violence,” he said. “Every single one of us, including the Dominicans who support the Workers Party, should condemn it.”
He noted further that his government is not taking the matter lightly and will do everything in its power to protect citizens of the island.
“It is not something that we are taking lightly, we have a responsibility to protect ourselves and to protect the citizens of Dominica and this government will do everything possible to protect ourselves and to protect the citizens of this country,” the prime minister said. “If men want to come and fight in elections come and do so with ideas, policies, programs, on achievements and aspirations …. that’s what we have been doing. Whenever you hear me speak as the leader of the party we speak about how we are going to advance and improve the way of life in this country.”
Prime minister Skerrit dismissed the members of the UWP claiming that they are simply “guys who recognize that everything they put forward has been rejected by the people.”
“The ideas and suggestions that they make, make no sense,” he said. “They have a leader who doesn’t understand what governance is, he doesn’t understand what it takes to run the country. You have a group of men who are seeking to get employed through these means and they are not getting traction and their only recourse is to preach violence.
Skerrit said he believes the police should question Lugay “on what are his plans because those statements are very serious statements.”
I have no political affiliation in Dominica but when I heard lugay’s statement it makes me think some of the people governing the Island are some idiots, lugay said he is a believer but he needs to know as a man thinketh in his heart so is he and if Lennox agree with this statement he doesn’t deserve to be PM and if some fool go and do any thing stupid at a labor meeting lugay u can claim the blame cause u put it out there.
I do not condone violence, but I can see Danny’s point. The man is putting country first and he truly desires to see Dominica move forward and prosper. His choice of words should have been more measured, given the fact that he’s a public figure. However, I do share is zeal for Dominican’s growth and development.

Whether, the apology is in order or not, Lugay’s comments may have some merits. I do not condone violence, however, I do not believe he was insinuating, or trying to insight, or influence violence, or suggesting that Dominican’s should go on a rampage eliminating the people in power, since they are the ones keeping Dominica, backwards.
Nevertheless, I do believe that Dominica will not make any significant progress as long as many in this generation remains alive, these people will have to die by natural cause in order to prevent them from a never ending rush to be in Government, only to repeat the old do nothing! The policy of the Labor Party today is the same as it was long before the Prime Minister Skerrit was born.
The labor party seems content with small things, unwilling seek bigger, and better things for the country. What they did at Melville Hall Airport, is a trademark of the mediocre mentality, let us be content, that is good enough for us; they have no vision.
Why should a Barbadian, in the person of Hartley, or whatever his name dictates what goes one in Dominica, why should Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent dictate what goes on in Dominica, why should a nobody from the island of St.Kits dictate what goes on in our country?
The government of Dominica will deny my comments in that regard, but it is true!
The mentality of this government is something inherited, and will never change until the whole generation of politicians in the Labor Party are deceased in their grave; no question about that, and that is not suggesting that their demise should come by violence, what I am saying is Dominica, will change after they live their full life, become senile old and can no longer obstruct progress.
I suspect in the political heat of the moment the words came out wrong, nevertheless the intelligent may have got his point.

Please people, this is not a statement that should come from the mouth of any politician and I say this as a strong supporter of the movement for change. It is shocking that he would make such comments. I reside in Canada and if a prospect stated that, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) would take him in for questioning. People never, ever make such statements which are considered threats.

I hope they do. The problem with some people is when they are in a Party and those who support a Party, they do not realize they are free to agree and disagree amicably. They can argue but let it lie there. Never wish anyone harm.
A few weeks ago an Ontario Provincial election was held. The Party I support was not the Party some people whom I know supported. In fact for a few reasons I will not mention here, I said to a few they should not vote for the Party they said they support. I did not get angry with them because they voted for that Party; we are not angry with each other. I simply told them let us see what that Party will do and they better not complain to me because I will throw it at them.
Election is over and the Parties are not bickering against each other. During their campaign they did not get personal. They addressed issues which they planned to establish. Certainly, they will address the other about their inadequacies as each Party leader was vying for votes.
This is how it should be on the campaign trail. They do not threaten the others, saying that some people deserve to die and should be removed from this life. These are powerful and threatening words. This is playing God. It is also against the Law to make such statements at others. If anyone had stated that, they would have been out of the campaign race as fast as you could beat your eyes.

4. Stop interfering with independent organizations like DBS and the Electoral Commission.
5. Humble himself and admit that certain actions like $500,000 donation saga was wrong on many grounds.
6. Be prepared to participate in civil political activities to ASSIST Dominicans to become educated in matters of economics, health, jobs, active transparency in governance, political freedom etc.
7. Avoid political cheating and treachery, and activities like the bin bobol and the refusal to actively assist in the GON Emmanuel matter.
