PM to make ‘important announcments’ at St. Joe rally

The prime minister will deliver the feature address at the rally

The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) will be holding a mass rally in the village of St. Joseph on Monday and prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said he will be making some important announcements at the event.

Skerrit told state-owned DBS Radio that he, as party leader, will deliver the feature address at the rally “and I will make certain, very important announcements.”

According to the prime minister, the rally will bring party supporters together since they have been asking for it for some time now.

“And we felt Labour Day would be an ideal opportunity to bring the family of Labour and the citizens and residents of this country together,” he stated.

At the event ministers will present their ministerial portfolios and reports from their respective ministries.

“Every minister will have the opportunity to speak on a particular subject of his ministry,” the prime minister said,

He pointed out that it is clear the party has been working and developing Dominica, arguing that in “every single sphere and sector in society the Labour Party has made a change.”

He stated that the DLP inherited what he described as a “very poor infrastructure, non existence infrastructure.”

“The education system, the health plan was poor, we had no intensive care unit at the hospital, we had no dialysis machines, CT Scan, Mammogram, MRI…” he noted.

He remarked Dominicans now have their own stadium, “where almost every tour of the West Indies, Dominica has hosted a match…”

He stated the poverty and indigent rates have dropped due to “comprehensive concerted efforts and investments and policies into the social way of life of our people.”

“So we came from zero to nine,” Skerrit noted.

The rally begins at 12:00 pm.

What this man should be presenting is a report card on his promises versus performance,Feeder roads for agriculture are non existent, the Marigot hospital have been allowed to deteriorate to the point where it is now closed, Tourism is severely challenged, where is the vendors acade that this man promised? need I go on. What is our national debt? how are we doing as far as manufacturing and exports are concerned? What are we doing to enhance the Tourism product? How is the Geo thermal gong to affect the product in the layou valley? What have we done to promote the yachting industry?. How are we positioning ourselves for the global realities? These are the things that needs answering.

I am so disappointed with the manner in which this country is being governed. Never in the history of Dominica have we seen many expensive Government vehicles on the road. Never in the history of Dominica have we heard so many allegations against a Government like this. The Bin Bobol, The Fertilizer Bobol, the land transfer deal , The Villas, The $400,000 dollar house now valued at 2M, A minister with Three house, The G.O.N case and so many others. There is also a great influx of Chinese nationals doing work our locals can do better. There is also a great number of recognized businesses who have already closed to mention Brisbane, Best Buy etc. I don’t understand with what is going on there are still a few singing praises to LABOR. Lately there is money circulating in Pointe Michel like it has no value. I have known of individuals who have received 5,000, $6,000 and those who have even received $7,000 plus building materials. where are all those who claim to be educated- The teachers, Lawyers, Engineers, Doctors, Great Musicians, Architects, Builders who know better and leaves in this small community. There is that saying ” Is not only those who do it but also those who find pleasure in those who do it is equally GUILTY.” People rise up. For a community blessed with so many talents take a look at our playing fields both in Soufriere and Pointe Michel, don’t you think that our parl. reps could have upgraded those fields? Scotts Head for example is a land full of fishermen, don’t you think that a fishing complex could be built in that community? I remember the great cricket team called Conquerors- what a great team, yet when you visit this playing field it is very heart breaking. Villagers do not get fooled by the money they circulate because it won’t last for five years. This country is at it’s brink of collapse!!!

In my opinion, I believe we should have a set date for general elections in Dominica just like the US. I hate it when politicians think the country belongs to them ONLY, forgetting the fact that WE THE PEOPLE have placed them in office.
Stop playing with the minds of the citizens of Dominica and have us guessing…. We live in a democratic nation “I would think, and I hope”

You have a point. Not long and you will have a wish. All it takes is tue statesman that do not want to be in office for more than two terms. Not one who has a frivol, vitivie mentality; spark plug a woman and after three months wants to have a secret, rush rush wedding. We can do much better than this!

Why didn’t the UWP change it when they were the government. Tell me which other country like our have a set day for elections. They like it that way also; and yet, we do know within 5 years election will be called so we do know when election is. We know it is not longer than 6 years.

You will wait like the rest of us for the PM to call the elections.

Look people in St. Joe. You have to love it. Labouuurrrrrrrr

At the rally on Monday, I expect to hear lots of Lennox Linton, Thomson Fontaine, Arthie Martin and them fellers. You will see enough red to cover the BLUE Caribbean sea. What you will not hear are plans for an International Airport. What you will not hear is the name GON Emanuel mentioned. What you will not hear is the total national debt including Petro Caribe. What you will not hear is a date for the next General Elections.

Its amazing the amount of money that is being invested in this convention and our roads are in such hot mess. The country people are suffering to make a living, all our small businesses are closing,Why because the chinese continue to get duty free while citizens continue to pay 40+ % on imported goods. The have 150% on imported potatoes and it seems they forget the farmers are afraid to plant so Roseau have no patat!
To the young people who continue to honk their horns all over the place, I hope you know how you expect to live a decent life.
The problem is not skerrit is how he manages the country, these guys are to greedy they want to take every investment thats placed in their hand at half half.Half for you half for me……After we continue to sacrifice so much we still gwayea ing allu blind in that poor little country.

The Electoral process has already been flawed and compromised. Elections can never be FREE and FAIR in our lovely Dominica under that regime. Why?

No Electoral Reforms, as recommended by the Electoral Commission, has taken place. For Years now, the Commission asked for money from Skerrit’s DLP Govt. to produce Voter ID Cards and to clean up the bloated Voters’ List. The Commssion got no money for Years. Ridiculed. disrespected.

No Campaign financing reforms. Remember who gave Skerrit’s DLP Govt. $$$$$$$$$ for campaign.? WIKILEAKS revealed that the CLICO boss did in the 2005 elections. Remember CLICO and that boss and how Dominicans loose their money? Millions. Nothing has changed.

Imagine in the last elections, there were about 65,000 persons registered to vote on the list in a population of 69000. Pure Madness. That’s avenue for FRAUD.

The Electoral Commission was forced to produce National ID Cards instead of what it recommended, Voter ID cards. Serious political influence of the operations of such an “Independent” Body.

Has there been, will there be equal access to the National radio Station DBS?

Will Bribery go ahead again? Handing out free plane tickets and/or cash to people overseas, simply to come down to vote for that particular Party and return next day is bribery under the electoral Laws and Constitution.

Remember the famous E-mail sent to PM by SC and copied to a member of the Electoral Commission? Remember? You all forget already?

Look recently, the Chief Elections Officer claimed that the NID may not be ready for elections?

Don’t we learn any lessons at all, seeing the chaos, turmoil in countries where elections are not free and fair, with many irregularities?

Don’t we know by now when a Party/Govt. is trying hard to steal, cheat to win an election, especially when those cabals, who commit criminal acts, cannot afford to loose Power? The people are the ones who lose out Big Time. In the scheme of things, the majority becomes poorer and poorer, while the few amass wealth in quick time and by dubious means.

To the same villagers, they will return begging for their votes. The same rural and urban people they have made poorer. Standard of living down, down, down. Hands out for hand-outs.

    How Long? Not Long.

    dominican always
i hear people talking about the stadium among a few other infrastructural projects lets look at the stadium that has been one of the biggest disaster in dominica before the stadium there existed a vibrant sporting movement among the people of roseau and its environ the youths of roseau had use of the windsor park young men were able to play football we hard the hards courts where both men and women enhanced their skills we had the grammar school grounds which produced some of this country greatest sporting heroes roosevelt skerrit grew up on that hallowed ground even his younger brother hamill excelled at sports on the green patch but all of that was destroyed along with the dominica grammar school an iconic institution steep in history and tradition
the dominica labour party had a chance to bring development to another part of dominica with the building of the stadium but they lacked the foresight
the building of the financial centre next to a slum or ghetto is another one to speak of instead of of bringing much needed improvement to the ministerial building a car park would had been build it could have been operated by the roseau city council and bring much needed revenue to local government but this party is a one trick party begging for handouts

This statement by the Hon. Prime Minister troubles me greatly. You mean to tell me after 14 years in office the PM is not sure he can draw a crowd to small St. Joseph, on the basis of his vision for Dominica so he has to use “Certain important announcements he has to make to draw a crowd? So Hon. PM, you mean to tell me that you don’t believe Dominicans will not come to the rally unless you promise “Breaking news? On a holiday? So people might only come to hear beth and breaking news? Mr Skerrit, agriculture is in a mess as well as tourism, manufacturing, youth unemployment, local businesses closing down, the latest casualty is the three story building on Hillsborough Street, the branch in Portsmouth is long gone.
After 15 years in office what are your achievements? Minus the assistance from China, Venezuela and the EU? What have you done with the tax paid by Dominicans? Why are there more beggars in Dominica than ever before? 15 years is a life time and if this is what you claim to be success God help us. How much money do we as a nation owe? It is my understanding that every Dominican owes $17,000.00 for a national debt of over one billion dollars.

did I hear right? Did I hear “here to stay” ok!!!!
Meanwhile the people perish! the brain drain continues to rise!
the live of the people get worst everyday! The begging continues! The rich (ministers of government) gets richer while the poor get poorer (The Masses)! And ironically this is what this government is thriving on- The poorer you get the more you become dependent on me, anything I give you I can us it to enslave you!
This government isn’t creating an environment for people to become independent. They are creating an environment for people to be dependent on them. Dangerous!

Skeritt full of drama. If it is an anouncement for the country why do it at a political rally. I guess its only important for labourites. Talk about self gratification. You are still the prime minister of Dominica national info is for national media.

While you on infrastructure please add this to your feature address; Big thanks to the chinese gov for there hard work building the roads, bridges, stadium and state house. It will be a source of national pride in our country’s ability to get gifts from wealthy friends so our people do not have to work hard. Why work hard when we can get grants and loans elswhere.
to venezuela and chavez i cannot say how much you have been there for us. Even while your country with so much resources cannot raise your peoples standard of leaving have given us night landing and free fuel. You have also invented the red clinic system that i effectively use today to keep people unemployed, unambitious, and in poverty. It is so popular and in such high demand we have adopted it in our housing revolution under the squatting department.

We inherited a vibrant agriculture industry but to diverify and increase processing and developing our manufacturing would take more than 14 years so we figure we will wait till we get abatoire and coffee plant from venezuela to put anything in place.

Additionally i knew the hospital suck then and now. We will be getting new one from china soon. In mean time i hope you understand why my kid was borm in the US. I just could not trust the facility. Heck even the minister of health had to be flown overseas when he got stroke.
last but not least thanks to you my supporters for your patience. Even in this hard economic times you have allowed us 50% increase salary while you barely got 1%. I know some of you have been working for 20 plus years and cannot buy property or build a home. Even if you married its difficult. I was able to own a mansion and countless assets in short time so i cannot understand your pain. Hopefully you guys can earn enough to pass on to your children. Mine will be in US if things get rough. My supporters; you are patient.
because of your patients i need 5 more years to get to the next level. That will make it 20 years. Help me reach my goal of 2050 because realy this is all i care about. 21 seats would be another record under my hat. If is not for me you would be nothing. Ask my ministers non of them would win i have saved you from desperate times and you must be greatfull

Dominicans, let me warn you here: While it is a fact that many of us cannot wait for the election date to be announced to free our country from the bondage of Skerrit, I want us to be smart here. After going through the blogs one by one, I am very concerned that all you don’t scare Mr Skerrit and cause him to boycott that very long anticipated election announcement. Me too cannot wait for that date and result so I can proudly and publicly show my real color I have been hiding for 3 years now. So please, let’s express ourselves but let us not scare him because I know the man is already afraid. In fact let me call on my good friend and Minister for Health, Tim Tim, to make sure there is always an ambulance and best medical staff following my PM wherever he goes these days because even if he kill the country, and for that I will not vote again in my lifetime, I still love my pm.

To the Christians of Dominica. Get ready and continue to uphold your Christian belief in truth and honesty and Godliness. Let God continue to guid you to the poles and vote them out. Do not continue to prop up crocks, oppressors, victimisation, segregators, selfishness, dictators, propagandists, slave masters, to name a few… If you do you will be worst than tham. Look around you and judge carefully whether this man has done what you have entrusted him to do. Look into his personal circumstances and question his wealth amassed in 14yrs. Can you take more of it? Consider that you arre slowly losing the power which comes around every 5yrs. Let him call election and deal with him in a way that he will understand that the power rest with you and not the SSU. PRAY ON THIS AND ACT NOW TO RETAKE CONTROL OF YOUR COUNTRY

Dominica is like the wild west to me . People have no respect for each other and the rule of law. The law is not enforce by the police. Customer service is poor …remember it not only now these problems have surfaced.

Before we touch this one let me remind you of the present state of the MARIGOT HOSPITAL, which is closed down as we speak, months before an election, where you have a doctor contesting. The only hospital that serves the main airport? ME DABA!
Infrastructure you said? The fact that you did not mention any I will not waste time as well.

    4. Windsor Park (Stadium) you said ?
ALL residents of Roseau and other visitors of the city will remember very clearly that when the DLP became the government in 2000, they met ongoing work for a brand new Widsor park, which was supposed to be ready in time for the last cricket world cup hosted in the Caribbean, I think in 2008. It was the DLP that stopped the work and abandoned the stadium for a number of years, just so that it would not be seen as a UWP baby. In fact it was being built and financed by Chavez, You as then minister for sports, stopped it and after you became PM , you got the Chinese to build it. As result, we were not ready for the World Cup as Dominicans were forced to fly to St. Kitts, St. Lucia, and other islands to see World Cup Cricket. So don’t take glory for putting out fire that you yourself set. That’s the only reason why we do not have an international airport today

:?: We need to stop being so selfish in the Country. I wonder where they were going to get the money to do all of the thing that UWP started when there was NO MONEY in the treasury department, or when Dominica was on the IMF Black List? UWP COULD NOT DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS CAUSE THE COUNTRY WAS BROKES AND IN FINANCIAL CRISIS!!!! The labor party could NOT do those things cause the UWP DID NOT LEAVE ANY FINANIAL MEANS OF GETTING THESE PROJECTS DONE!!! ATLEAST the labour party pulled us out of the crisis and got work done. Let me list a few out of many.
The Yes We Care Programme, The National Employment Programme, The School Bus, The fact that people under 18 and over 60 don’t pay hospital fees, The scholarship programme, The housing assistance programme, The assistance programme for people who lose there house in disasters, The abbatoir poultry progamme, The Petro Caribe Gas (bet you buy those when shell has no gas), the schools in Grand Bay, Newtown, Portsmouth, Grammar School and other schools that got fixed, water projects in Giraudel, Kingshill and More, The road to the Melville hall airport, soufriere and Pointe Michel, Night Landing, the football fields in Kingshill and Loubriere, the new equipments in the hospital like Dialysis, the expansion of the Melville Hall airport, the road from penville to portsmouth, the housing programme in silverlake, the 2 percent agri and education loans AID Bank, not forgetting our new tourist site – the white house. I will stop here. But I’m encouraging that you do your research and when you do I’M BETTING YOU’LL GET MORE.

      • st.lucian
        May 2, 2014

@irritated: Who do you expect to build schools, hospitals, roads? Any government that is their responsibility.
Economics time: How many Dominicans were employed on the following: West Coast project, The state House, Melville Hall airport road, the Staduim? NONE. Do you know that amount of money lost to Social Security? Say the West Coast- !00M.
If 40% is Labor- $40M our citizens lost and if DSS is 7% then they have lost 2.M. Do the maths for the rest and you will see how much money went back to China.
Roseau- How many Local businesses do we have left in Roseau? Not Many. Can you say that the economy is doing fine?
Can you explain how one man can build three homes in 14 years? Well his economy is fine.
The Abatoir you boost- Why can’t it finish and where are the farmers who is going to supply it since most farmers have abandoned their farms.
What about the BIN and Fertilizer BOBOL?
Like you say” I Betting you will get more.” what Corruption!!!!!

I hope when he gives the state of the nation speech, he will leave the mapuis, roro, movaelange for another time. We will want to hear all the plans Government has put or will be putting in place for the eventuality of a disaster in the Valley.

    2. The health plan was poor. OMG! Is health care better in Dominica today than 15 years ago? Boy, I know many Dominicans that want to retire abroad and move to Dominica. However, 99.9% have one common concern and that is, the health care that is so bad. I remember when persons from the neighboring islands would leave their country and come to Dominica to have surgery and babies. However, that’s not the case today. NOT EVEN YOU SKERRIT TOOK A CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR BABY BOY BORN IN DOMINICA. Today before Dominicans go to the hospital they need to make the sign of the cross because of the risks

Allu too sot! Skerritt not going to say anything about elections, he is going to make announcements of major projects to be funded by the Chonese, like the start of construction of the new hospital on Tuesday. He is also going to talk about another new hotel. What he will not say is that once again Dominicans will not be employed on these projects.

“The education system, the health plan was poor, we had no intensive care unit at the hospital, we had no dialysis machines, CT Scan, Mammogram, MRI…” he noted
Mr Skero let’s deal with them one by one

    1. Education. On what basis is education better today than 14 years ago? In 14 years, how many high schools did you and the DLP build? UWP built 2 in 4.5 years. How many elementary schools did the DLP build in 14 years and how many did you close down and abandoned? I know for sure that you closed down one in your own constituency, in the village of Thibaud. So if the old good Dlp, the DFP and the UWP did not build those schools, you would have to build them and would not be in a position to do what you claiming you did. In life one usually plants a garden, one weeds it, another waters it, while another takes the produce to the market for sale. Who is better? Is it the one that seels or the one that plants? No. They are all important because the seller would not be able to sell if one did not plant. Even the bible tells us so in 1 Cor. 3:5-9.
Bye the way, Universal education did not begin with you and the DLP neither was free books , because as a then poto DLP supporter, my family benefited from both programs as our son was able to go to PSS which was extended for such program by the UWP and we were able to get free text books for all our children. Yes we have more people that are better educated but that is not as a result of Skerrit. It is as a result of times that have changed and trust me, 10 yrs later, e degree will wort nothing as times and seasons always change and make higher demands on us. so stop this useless noise because you and all your supporters know very well that the last 10 years have been the worse in the history of our nation since independence.

Growing up as a young teenager I always admired the Prime Minister but its time for him to go, he always tells one side of the story states the good but doesn’t never state the BAD that he does. Young people open your eyes its time for the Dominica LabourParty to go. too much corruption what will happen when China starts to ask for their money ? what’s the price will Dominica pay for all these monies ? Venezuela’s current president wants all the monies the deceased Hugo Chavez used to give money ? What will the Dominica pay for that ? we need answers. I’m not for Workers neither for DLP,But the people of Dominica needs answers

“I will make certain, very important announcements.” What certain announcements Skerrit can make that the public and UWP do not know? here is what to expect:
    1. Election date
WE all know from months ago that based on his last poll with that Bajan, pollster, which identified UWP winning 15 seats, the big boys of the DLP forcefully told Skerrit that he must call the election because the longer he drags it the worse it getting for DLP
    2.A slate of new candidates
But we all know that having NEW Passengers, on an OLD SINKING boat, CAPTAINED by the same person, is no improvement. Is the SAME OLD SAME OLD and even worse, as long as the captain remains the same and the nature of the ship remains the same. So come quickly Skero, cause we have been ready since mid year 2013.

So where on earth would a government give 6 months for an opposition to prepare for an election? Anyway 3 weeks is more than enough for the opposition. The UWP should not need more time than that, since they have been in campaign mode since the beginning of the new millennium.

They have been stuck like a gramophone needle since after the 2000 election. They have been, what is the movie Cher starred in? Ah Moonstruck! Yea, the UWP has ben Sun struck for some time now. Isn’t that when they went to worship the sun and God got angry and said to them you shall not have false Gods against me? I cannot recall. Maybe it was no then but it happened didn’t it? Back to the gramophone; their needle is maybe full of rust and cannot move, so they can wait until May 2015, no hurry; Dominicans can wait until the PM is ready and we will be ready whenever he says and then for sure we will all know because elections are constitutionally in 2015. And we will be Red, Red, Red, Ready for 5 more years.

This government is the best thing that has happened to us as a Nation for some time; and we aren’t fools to spite ourselves and put the UWP back in government. Our future and our children’s future depends on this continued that the DLP under PM Skeritt have started we most allow them to continue.

5 more years for PM Skeritt and the Dominica Labour Party.
U get it. We will keep moving Dominica forward in the right direction, we are not looking back. Sorry UWP not this time, you are not ready yet.

I guess to announce that the recommendations made by Gregor Nassief to reduce/remove VAT as applied to service charge, staff meals, and such staff benefits in the hotel industry would be reckless!!!! Maybe just maybe to announce that Gregor Nassief is wrong and being malicious and downright dishonest when he highlights that our tax, legal and fiscal framework as it relates to tourism development is uncompetitive. Again it could be to further discredit Gregor Nassief when he mentioned that there is a policy vacuum, and what the tourism industry needs now more than ever is real commitment evidenced by clear policies that give our industry a competitive edge. Election date!!!!!!!!!!
