PM Skerrit fires salvo at opponents

PM Skerrit
PM Skerrit

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has taken a swipe at his political opponents and critics including new United Workers Party candidate for Roseau Central, Joseph Isaac.

Speaking at the commissioning of a filling station in Scotts Head on Tuesday evening, Skerrit questioned those who criticize his social programs.

“How could you criticize us for helping a poor person with a home, how could you criticize us helping a child get to school through the provision of a school bus, how could you criticize that?” he queried.

In an apparent swipe at Isaac, although he did not mention his name, Skerrit stated, “And I am hearing all of them with interest in politics these days, enunciating all kinds of things but I am saying to them, especially those in the Roseau Central Constituency, that monies you owe anybody go and pay it first and then make yourself available to the people of Dominica.”

When contacted on the matter, Isaac said he will respond to the prime minister’s remarks “at the appropriate time.”

Earlier in the month reports from the United Workers Party (UWP) indicated that Issac will be replacing current Parliamentary representative, Norris Prevost.

In an interview with Dominica News Online Issac indicated that he had the full support of the executive of the party and the supporters of the UWP in the Roseau constituency.

Isaac also emerged as a nominee for the position of UWP ‘s deputy political leader at the party’s nominations council meeting last week.

Skerro, Have you and the DLP heard this term? ” Give a man a fish and he will have food for today , but teach him to fish and he will have food for ever.”
I think you and DLP want Dominicans to be fed for one day so that they will be dependant on DLP for ever.
This is ashame on your part, and these are among the reasons why we need change in Dominica.
Another thing is am so shocked at, the number of people who are swallowing your crap that you are saying and even clapping evertime you open your mouth. I mean who are these people who can’t see through your lame lies??

Ted boy, some people like you try to raise the level of debate and conversation on issues. The p.m knows exactly what he is doing with these comments or so called maypwee. He is just energizing part of his base.
Those are the people who are given hand outs close to election, those who think that free bus ride to school is development, those who will proclaim how much they love their pm because drains are being built in lagoon and work is being done on the cottage road.
Ted how will these politician become competent, accountable and responsible when in addition to his base who love to hear their pm and Reggie give maypwee you have a dentist from lagoon, prominent business men-hardware store owners , a famous pastor, so called villa owners supporting them and refuse to admit the dishonesty and lack of transparency in this administration. By the way some of these supporters preach in church and so eh. I don’t know if they ever preach about honesty, integrity and soo..

Ted you know how many houses Reggie has? Have you seen the expansion of his home? While he is able to develop himself his supporters settle for a handout every election and they love their p.m

    Ted what u gonna do?

Put a pig in a palace,it still remains a pig. Regardless, to who represents the Labor Party, the mapuis, the roro business is part of the organization. It is like a culture. My Dad once told me that during a political meeting, a Minister of the Labor Government, told his supporters he knows the price and colour of underwear Miss Charles wears. In resent times, we have heard of several derogatory remarks coming out of the foul mouth of a man called Tony, with no respect for Dominicans especially members of the opposition. Those of us who listen to the so-called animal show, are familiar with the description and language that comes out of the mouth of a Senior Citizen who vehemently supports the Skerrit Labor Party Government. When I hear Skerrit with this mapuis, roro, rum shop talk, I wonder wether the leadership qualities of the man is overrated.

Oh, and when did Mr. Skerrit’s Govt. pay their own Public Works Corp. on time? When did they ever pay their light- and telephone bill on time, eh? We have an old saying about that big pot calling the kettle black, not true? I don’t know about Mr.Isaac owing money but surely, you should check yourself first before coming with such talk because it can easily bite you.

Are we Dominicans the most emotional or are we just playing politics? Words seems to break our bones even if it’s not dirrected at us, that’s a sign of personal weekness. Whatever is said to someone should only hurt them if they allow it to, a strong person who is being told something negative should either not answer or answer strongly, instead a crying it hurting. Everywhere in the world you listen to politics you know it’s a dirty game with alot of words and most times it do get dirty. Here we seem to think that it should be all sweet talk well I am ready for all the negatives that will be said about me for my post but I am not a cry baby.

Why does citizens always thinks it’s their job to answer for a politician? Shouldn’t a politician be able to answer for his/herself? DNO did the smart think as always to go straight to Isaac for his response yet we have people here answering for him although he chose not to comment yet. People please let the politicians argue on our behalf stop acting as if they ask for your help.

Say what all you want, curse me, call me all sorts of names, give me all thumbs down, I could care less, but I giving this government 2-3 more terms in office because I don’t wish to be fooled again into thinking that politicians who outside talking going to come in and do any better. The present government have made many mistakes but atleast they have the experience. Therefore a new party would simply come and have to make too many more mistakes before they can gain the experience to do better. In an island as difficult as Dominica to develop I believe a government needs alot of time to do work. Countries like the US and Uk have had their democracies for a very long time so hence the country is strong so they can afford to change government more often but we need time. The UWP is now rather a new party so there is no guarantee that they can just pick up the ball and run with it and who can’t see that must be living in dreamland, where that is. It has never happened in the past and certainly won’t happen now if you were to follow the history of Dominica you would notice under every government people cried out about poverty and so to migrated.

This is a downright lie. Do not misconstrue what he stated. As PM he must assist the poor who are in need of. Will you help them or who will?
He is making a point of what he has done for Dominica and you opposition and critics are ungrateful. You still give him a rough time. Some of you people lack love. Your hearts are hard as rock. How could such a Party want to rule Dominica?
When election time rolls around I hope Dominicans put on their thinking cap (before that) and vote wisely. If they do not, they will bear the repercussion of their words, emotion and actions.
Me, personally, I would vote for the Party/person who has done the most for Dominica and will do more for it. This is how I vote in Canada. No one pulls the wool over my eyes.
God is depending on Dominicans to vote wisely for the good of the country and all nationals, not by your emotions and coercion. You should know what I mean. Be smart. Learn appreciation and gratitude. Be fair.

Let us take the opportunity of debates and the election process to challenge him on whether he invests in technology for Dominica and his strategy in the long-term and short term to alleviate Dominica from the heavy burden of debt. Stop selling passports, stop selling land and expand Dominican based businesses internationally, we can export our quality and knowledge without selling our country and culture!

As a young lady looking to make a decision as to which political party best suits me, I am disheartened to hear the leader of our country for the second time mentioning that citizens owe money, and what they should do. Now, let’s look at this holistically; does Dominica owe anyone? Why do we have banks and what is one of their main functions? I mean need I elaborate any further? This scare tactic foolish and childish attitude need to stop ASAP. I am in touch with many young people like myself who just graduated from college and owe the bank, and sad to say these very same politicians have not provided the enabling environment for business to flourish and employ young people talk shop. First, I want you to know Mr. PM the young people of this country who I interact with and are without jobs will make their feelings known at the poling stations next election. You and your cronies who have turned this country from dealing with issues that affect employment and other pertinent issues will hear from the youth of Dominica. It’s is a promise! Do not be fooled by our lack of chatter in the public domain, we are listening.

    August 22, 2013

I have commented before on many issues, especially political issues on DNO. I am a Dcan by birth and upbringing. I have lived in Dca all my life. I was an avid support of Ms Charles because I believed in her visión for the country. She was not perfect. She had her flaws like everyone else… but one of the things we are all overlooking in Dcan politics is the people behind the scenes. They are the ones really responsable for the governance of this country, good or bad. And this is true for all our political parties, be it DFP, DLP, DLM, UWP. There are quite a few of them, and God alone knows what damage they are cuasing to our beloved nation. We dont know because we dont see them.. we may sometimes hear them or of them.
My point is, our political culture is as corrupt as the come.. has always been! Who is going to take the responsibility of changing it? To do so, is tantamount to political suicide and they all know it. For example, UWP didnt clean up the electors list in their time. It wasnt in their best interest to do so… and I dont see any other party in power doing so, not even the same UWP who is asking for it now.
Unemployment is another big issue. Dcans have always migrated in groves – we are all over the world. Do you honestly believe that any one political party can change the unemployment landscape? Ms Charles couldnt, Mr James couldnt, Mr Skerrit cant and certainly Mr Linton wont be able to. Where does that leave us?

When a leader cannot talk about his success story as the reason why we should re-elect him, then he has to turn to things like maypwee and curse words to get supporters to applaud him.
But then again the man has a right to talk like that you know. If the nation would get serious and question him about monies spent by I am quite sure he would be left owing the country.
For example, ask him about the Penville road / water project. Ask him how much was spent on the original water project? Ask him who was the contractor? Ask him what is the qualification of the contractor? Ask him why it is that after millions of tax payers dollars were spent on the project which failed to deliver water, why was the contractor not held responsible to correct the problem? Since we all know that the said contractor is from his constituency and home village, can the honorable PM also tell the nation if he has any shares in the said investment? Can he also tell us what were the terms and conditions of the said contract, if any? If there wasn’t then why? Tell us why another contractor was hired to do the same job that was paid for already? If according to the story given by them that failure was due to manufacturer problem, did they get the company to compensate the Dominica?
DNO please do not delete because I did not make any false accusation, I am just simply asking pertinent questions because tax payers money is our money and we need to know how our monies were spent. This is not the DLP money that they can spend as they want.

The PM has been called a thief, a gangster, a this a that. Every effort to paint the Pm as a highly flying criminal of the highest order has been levelled at the PM and given prominence as the truth in certain sections of the media. He has been referred to as highly immoral without a morsel of respectability and decency in him. He has been called all manner of evil. In large measure he has taken it in strides although some have stood in his defence. Opposition criticisms goes with the territory as the PM says. However, the moment he opens his mouth and utters one word, the rules change. He the PM should not say anything, Just sit back and take all manner of blows sent his way. Not even his moment in the sun (wedding day) was accorded any respect. One salvo at Scotts Head and the hornet’s nests is blown wide open.

Joseph Isaac is on the record as saying that “papers” is of no real significance in Dominica because we are a small country. It is more important in America or Europe. He said he is a trained Industrial Engineer and he does not need papers to do his work. That statement has not captured the attention of certain media houses. Was Mr. Isaac misinterpreted? I suppose he blamed the “enthusiastic” being on radio with a host that asks direct and not flattering questions. Mr. Lennox Linton is on the public record as “daring” Pastor Peter Augustine to “take him” on the issues he, Lennox is championing in what he referrs to as central to the governance of this country. Should Pastor Augustine not heed Lennox’s warnings, he, Lennox Linton will personally see to the removal of the “ointment” from Pastor Augustine’s “anointing”. How he proposes to do that? Pastor Augustine I understand was prayingfor the leaders of our country and asking God’s help to protect them form mischief making people. did he call Lennox Linton by name? Did he refer to Lennox’s crusade as unimportant and evil? Did he ask for God to rid Dominica of the Lennox Linton’s of this world? I do not know? I did not hear the goodly pastor’s statement. What is sure, there is a voice recording of mr. linton making that threat to pastor Augustine. Was the recording doctored? was Linton’s statementtaken outof context?

For certain sections of the media, that statement was never made and if the public is reminded (as they must)that the statement was indeed made, then we are told that it is precisely because Mr. Linton is a threat to the ruling party why the public is being reminded of that statement which is on the public record. Give me a break.

Observer you have the audacity to come here seeking sympathy. Are you kidding me. Skerrit is on record calling the then UWP government corrupt; The Labor Party got in power on allegations of corruption which tony Astaphan who was part of the brigade was paid to investigate the allegations. You know that don’t you. Well the accusations thrown at Skerrit is certainly poetic justice and if one is not bias he or she can simply follow the dots and find the glaring truths.
You want to fight Peter Augustine’s fight . It is obvious that Peter Augustine choose to step into the ring to throw his punches so he must be prepared to get hit. As simple. Let us not be hypocrites – when peter make certain comments we all know who or what he is referring to. So my suggestion to Peter and Observer is that if you are truly doing the work of god do so without the political antics. It is only right to let Peter Know that we all have impurities in our ointment and his anointment is no exception and a Peter should find that part of the Bible that talks about playing with dogs twill bring you fleas.

I am non religious so I don’t know where but I believe that there is a Levi or Leviticus ( something like that) in the bible to so check it out.

Observer, what exactly is the purpose of coming on here to spew all that garbage? Don’t you know that the mayor of Roseau got over 1000 bins from Dupwell? I suggest that you go down to the city council office and get/buy one of those to store you garbage, ok. You seem to have a problem with all the truths revealed about skerrit’s dishonorable conduct which has me rather baffled.
In every country under the sun, people who rub the revenue of taxes are regarded as criminals. So to the extent that skerrit has done so on a number of occasions, then yes, he is a criminal and a thief! Any man who goes on official government business and tries to get into the pa… of every woman he sets eyes on is immoral. Skerrit has no choice but to take the criticisms because he knows that everything said about him is the truth. AS for all those who come to his defense, “is fass dey fass”.
“And I am hearing all of them with interest in politics these days, enunciating all kinds of things but I am saying to them, especially those in the Roseau Central Constituency, that monies you owe anybody go and pay it first and then make yourself available to the people of Dominica.”
Did skerrit have a memory lapse when he said that? Has he forgotten that the gentleman debated him on Mapin tv in 2000 as a member of the UWP? The fact is that the boy skerrit has a habit of saying those things to people. Why? because he has access to the state’s resources and has become wealthy while others have to struggle to do business in a hostile economic climate, while providing jobs for others.
As for your friend peter Augustine! It is a fact and I believe Pastor Rodney when he said that he peter augustine never made himself available to pray with the cabinet of Mr. James during the four and a half years in office. Can you believe that? Do you know how many weeks there are in 41/2 years observer? Peter Augustine is the last person to talk about “protection form mischief making people” as a civil servant and school principal, he was on the frontline making mischief against the labour party in the 1970’s and then again between 1995 and 2000 against the UWP government.
So friend when you have you garbage please find somewhere else to deposit it. People like you enjoy the fact that you can hide behind your computer screen so no one can challenge you but doh fraid, as they say two mountain cannot meet but two people can.

Oh boy “Frenz” you missed my point. Did you not read that I said that the PM consider criticism of him, whetehr is true of orchestrated as natural for who and what position he hold in society? I am sure you did, but chose to side step it. He still does. I was looking to see if you would have explained away Joseph Isaac’s take on education and “papers”. for whilst he was saying that “papers” are not important in a small country like ours, he was at the same time promoting his “papers” to the embarrassment of the man he is publicly defending for not having any papers. Imagine in todays Dominica we can justify selecting a man with absolutely no academic credentials to be head of government ahead of others in his same grouping with excellent academic “papers” who are more experienced than him in the practice of politics.

You want to quote Bible, when King David was anointed King, his predecessor Saul was ill at ease with the new soon to be king. Saul had fallen away form God, yes God. Saul went on a rampage to kill David. God protected David. When David confronted Saul in a cave sleeping, he was urged to do what most of us would do and that was to kill Saul, the king who was chosen by God and then fell away from God. You know what David said, I will not touch the Lord’s annointed and walked away. By the way what did Peter Augustine say about Lennox. Did he criticize lennox’s tactics? Even if he did, so what? Is Lennox above reproach and cannot be criticized? I can imagine when he ‘becomes PM”. Papa Bbondieu, help us!!!!

Congratulation Pm. You seems to be well informed.

While you at it tell us why one big contractor our partner cannot get to do more government houses under his name. Just to open your mind.

Mr. Pm you must realized everybody have a best friend and nobody keep secret. You need to stop attacking people personally and debate the real issues of the country. Giving houses and buses for school children is good argument. Stay on that line and defend your performance. criticize the recommended policies of the opposition.

When you go Attacked people personally like DLP people is saint and above board you will cause people like me to loose a lot of friends. cause we will talk.

Whats wrong if the young man have debts. If you have business then the likely hood is that you may have to borrow.
It seems you don’t want this country to have an opposing point of view.
Once one don’t support your regime they dunce, thief ,after money etc

The sad thing is your followers repeat everything you and Astaphan says. you don’t realized the amount of people that actually believe in you and is time you raise the level of your debate so you can educate your followers.

You are not infallible. so yes you will be criticized on certain policies and there are also people that think your contribution have been optimize and its time for new ideas , new process , new management.

I for one have stated on numerous occasion that i would not support any government that oppose an international airport for Dominica. Along with that i said your government had some good ideas but very poor implementation.

Eg – numerous people get monies for small business and nothing to show today. why. there were no follow up by the government with person who receive the monies. i would have had project managers going around the country to monitor these investment even giving advice etc to the young entrepreneurs.

Your housing revolution, again good idea but giving an 18 years old a house, giving a house to people in their 70’s and 80’s who have young hard back kids selling drugs not making any contribution in the country to inherit these houses when their elders pass away. No way. i would build more home for the elders and higher social workers to take care of these people when one die some body else comes in .

Teacher who loving doctor ( hope my partner eh vex with me)get government houses in chance zicack, 4 person ( young hard working) from same family get land and house in zicack when there are countless poor people left behind. your program good but is not properly targeting those in need.

Giving away prime land with commercial value to individual just for votes . madness

    Chinese displacing local entrepreneur .

Low level of wages while prices is on the rise.

No improvement in our agricultural sector .

    Manufacturing is almost non existence.

Health care services is very poor. Can i do an MRI at the hospital . its 2013 .

Not enough playing facilities , courts for basket ball , netball ,tennis etc. facilities need lights and for free. Get the youth of the street man.
No recreational areas other than the gardens , yet you just giving land with now plan for community center, daycare/ pre -school centers, playing field and recreational centers and a polyclinic. look at chance zicack, last election you gave away acres to those who had occupied buck( the land of flake at cotter hill). now your minister asking to do the same in george town and you cutting more plots for people in cotten hill without the necessary amenities i have mention.

How many community computer access centers are there?

how many free hot spots are there around Dominica?

The great Robert solow in his noble prize winning economic growth model articulated that long run growth is achieved via increase in technology. Are we doing all we can in this area.

Tell Ian and Reggie we need a rehab center in Portsmouth too much damn paro in the place man.

Could go on but these are just some of the reason y i am not supporting your administration. and also beside my criticism i must take time to say that you gets an A plus from me when it comes to infrastructural development and tertiary education. Like i said no government can never do all good nor all bad.

To this day they are still mamagying people with “roads”. There was a time when Dominica really needed roads, and that has stayed in the collective consciousness as a sign of progress. Today, however, Dominica needs a sustainable job market.

Skerrit is Mr. Personality and only thrives on personal attack.

Not sure why the Finance minister would have a problem with a small businessman or woman risking and taking on debt to run a business that helps to create employment. That means he is not interesting the private sector development and employment creation because 95% of them have debt.

So for you to get in the political arena you must pay off your debt as a business or a taxpayer…..

There is no gentleman in politics It’s called ‘dog eat dog’. Do you remember what Hilary Clinton said and did to Obama in the first primary ? It was disgusting – and they were in the same Psrty !’!!! The PM is an astute Politician – well educated. He isn’t doing anything which isn’t done in politics. Mepwe? You haven’t seen anything yet! He’s a Dominican and will give as good as he gets. The heat is on. He’s thrown the gauntlet !!!

  76. ROSEAU VALLEY
    August 22, 2013

One must admit that politics can be a dirty business and the type of rhetoric often used by the PM comes with the territory.

One must be prepared to face the music and dance to the tune once an interest in running for political office is declared.

This is especially true in the context of DLP’s nasty politics. This is the DLP’s idea of the next level of the low, “Mammy, Sogo and Crazy ” politics. It has always been so and it will remain so until the voters of Dominica send them a clear message that this level of politics is unacceptable.

The PM has repeatedly demonstrated his comfort in stooping low in the political gutters with such “un-primisterial” remarks. He feels that he could use confidential banking information of private citizens, information obtained by virtue of his position or information passed on to him through privileged attorney-client relations to vilify, malign, belittle, speak ill, and denigrate his opponents, who are honest and hard working Dominicans. Even our courts have been drawn into rendering maipuis filled judgments as in that of Justice Cottle in the defamation law suit by Pinard-Byne against Lennox Linton.

This is what the PM and his mouthpieces on the “Animal Show” attempted to do to Sir Brian Alleyne, Dr. Francis Saverin and continue to do against Dr. Fontaine. This is what they are doing to Lennox Linton, Joseph Issac and this is what they will continue to do to anyone who presents him/herself for public office against them. This is their modus operandi. They thrive on gossip, character assassination and personal attacks against their opponents. This is the reason that they cannot engage in constructive, educational and professional debates on ideas and issues.

Imagine, for weeks now following a budget presentation, all they seem to be doing on the “Animal show” is mercilessly attacking and trying to re-defining Lennox Linton, who is destined to be the next political leader of the UWP. You hear men without any formal education being critical of Lennox for not having the same.

It is the hope and intent of Roseau Valley Group that in this round of political campaigning we can raise the level of political discourse to the next level and focus more on debating real issues and ideas for our development rather than paying so much attention to this type of negative, gutter, mudsling, mercenary and personally attacking politics.

    Respectfully

Roseau Valley You have obviously raised your intensity. Not only that you were operating at ring side now I see that you even removed the boxing gloves and swing like a boxer gone mad. Well Roseau Valley ( I wont use your initials) you may not be doing yourself justice by coming into the ring with a mask. You see it does not and should not matter.

Let’s just express our views without fear but in a respectable and civil manner. Focus more on the issues and ideas and less on the individual. Internalize, scrutinize and process the message without being overly concerned with the messenger.

ROSEAU VALLEY had no intention to come out swinging as you put it. However, since some individual(s) decided to use the blogg name Roseau Valley to mislead people on DNO- we have decided to let the name ROSEAU VALLEY speak and speak we must speak because their is a need for it.

Year after year the UWP has attempted to tarnish the PM’S reputation. They have used the most derogatory terns to address the PM, they have accused him of all sorts of wrongs, still, the PM kept his head up and did not give up, asking someone to clear their debts before presenting himself as a candidate should be a requirement and not used in attempt to score political points. Making this s big issue, in comparison to all the libel and slander some have subjected the PM to, is pathetic. PM, keep your head up, they cannot touch you.

Sakwais gas if I can operate a slush fund through my lawyer with cash of more than $2 Million why not laugh at those who work hard to make an honest living , take risk/loans in an economy that is bummed out.

But you know what – the truckers owed and is still owing the bank. I know of truckers who “kwedir” and still cannot pay their creditors simply because (1)They were not paid for 7 months; Now we understand why some of these truckers were so afraid to come out and talk. Instead they were asking Q95 and the listeners to talk speak them. Had they demonstrated many of their ” Zanfen” would have been exposed.

Oh by the way I would like to hear people like Lennox Lawrence jump on the band wagon “mepwesaiying” people who have debts.

Another thing Mr PM pay Venezuela their money and pay the people who have worked on government project more than 5 months ago and are yet to get paid.

    August 22, 2013

    Dear Mr. PM,

The problem is not with helping someone. The issue is how you do it. Community empowerment is not simply giving people money. Community empowerment is for example hiring people with no jobs to cut the weeds growing on your way to villages every 2 -3 months like is being done in St. Lucia. Community empowerment is opening a small factory in villages and hiring people to do woodwork etc and the money from doing that is injected right back in the economy. That is what you call helping people.

That’s how they do it “voyez mapuis” if you cannot reason with the individual attack the character. If he owing is probably because there is no growth in the country and he cannot generate a profit after heavy taxes, but at least he putting himself out there as entrepreneur and trying to create employment. Same so he blast Ms Pestiana and tell her to go and paint her hotel. Where was she getting money to paint it if things are not in place to attract more tourist? But that’s how our people love it, go and see them clap and wave even if they themselves owing and cannot pay their light bill. Maypuis season is upon us again!

@ Juan Palbo. You actually thought Romney was that bad. Obama won the election by promising to legalize Gay marriage and Abortion. I mean give me a break. Imagine you see your son having sex with a next man or people just taking pill going by doctor committing murder.
By the next fifteen years America will debate the possibility of legalizing the use of cocaine as recreational drug . mark my words. Remember they argue that it’s one choice to have an abortion and we should not take take that right away from women. However it’s also one choice to take drugs or commit suicide. etc
what you don’t understand is that we have a failing world because we’ve lost values to keep power. When we loose our christian values we will surely fade away.

We will tell them about those who have the distinction of being the most lazy civil servant, we will tell them about those who ran off with petty cash from a small group playing dominoes. So doh hurt your head, there is more to come but not from skerrit.
