PM Skerrit “humbled” by re-election; congratulates Linton

Skerrit said he is humbled by the new mandate
Skerrit said he is humbled by the new mandate

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, says he is humbled by being re-elected into office while at the same time congratulating his rival, leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton for being elected as a member of parliament.

Preliminary results from the general election show the Dominica Labour Party grabbing at least 15 seats of the 21 parliamentary seats in Dominica.

“I am humbled by the overwhelming response of the electorate in Dominica to our appeal for a mandate to continue governing Dominica for another five years,” Skerrit said in a speech to the nation on Monday night.

He also congratulated Linton for his success at the poll.

“I wish to congratulate Mr. Lennox Linton, political leader of the UWP, on his election to parliament and also to the other new opposition members,” he said. “In this new term, numerically speaking, there will be a stronger opposition in parliament. I accept the will and verdict of the people.”

Skerrit thanked everyone for “conducting themselves properly throughout the campaign and minimizing the incident of violence and destruction.”

“I congratulate you all for demonstrating to the world that Dominica is now a mature democracy,” he said. “I thank you for showing in the Commonwealth of Dominica, common sense has triumphed over propaganda and the appeal to raw emotion.”

He said in the next term “more resources will be devoted to wiping out poverty and ignorance from the island of Dominica.”

“The best is yet to come,” he stated.

Skerrit further said every Dominican in every age group has benefited from “at least one of the economic and social policies and programs we have introduced during the past fourteen years.”

“I am sure that this is your way of showing gratitude,” he said. “That is why you have decided to give us a new mandate to continue to deliver the many realistic promises we made to you in the manifesto.”

Skerrit called on everyone to transcend political differences “and pull together to make Dominica one of the best places in the region to live, to work, to study, to do business, to visit and to enjoy life.”

“Never forget we are all Dominicans and that I get up every morning knowing that I am the prime minister of one Dominica,” he said.

smh..ha..ha Lets put all jokes aside. Mr Linton and your supporters who put down and are crucifying Mr Skerrit because Dominicans resident overseas siezed the opportunity to return to vote. Come on. Look in the mirror and someone please answer this question. “Can your Mr Linton or any of your supporters categorically admit of attest to the faact that the UWP had no one in Dominica from the diaspora voting.?” If someone can tell me no they will be rewarded in cash. because Mr Linton is trying to portray a squeaky clean image to the Dominican electorate, but we cant and wont be fooled because we know better.

The plane looads of persons who came in on the airline owened and operated by Mr Sam Raphael. What about that Mr Linton. Next question about buying people to vote by the PM could Mr Linton tell the nation what went on in the Roseau South constiuency and who bought who to cause sikiri to win. That’s just a tip of the iceberg..there is more to come Mr High & mighty Linton. For your own sake please take a good look at yourself and members of your camp.

The parl rep who crossed the floor worked overtime to ensure that the diaspora came in to put labour in power. They mobilised more than one hundred and sixty people from all over to rob Isaac Baptiste of his seat. I saw people I have not seen in Castle Bruce for years. Those people need to stop being so wicked – they need instead to fix their broken down houses and settle their debts and some need to build a shelter because foreign will not be hospitable forever.
They need not put a government on our backs that we do not want. They ran from Dominica because the could not make it here, it was too hard for them. Why did they not give up the green card, if “Dominica is so near and dear to their hearts”? These people are despicable and God will give them their just reward, he does not lie and he told us that what we sow that we will reap down to the third and fourth generation. The modern day slave sellers did a good job of keeping the people oppressed but my Bible has strong words for those who seek to oppress others who are not as advantaged as they are.
I wish them double portion of what they put on our backs and let them never forget that the consequences of our sins will be visited onto our third and fourth generations. And remember to fix all those broken down and dilapidated houses and build your community – not just come for a day and vote.
You stole workers seat and the commandment says ” Thou shall not steal”.

        @forreal,
YES, UWP came up here asking for donations, outlining their plans for DA and promised the diasporans that when they win the election, they “would make arrangements for diasporans to come home to vote as well as to make investments because your involvement is important.” They think people foolish. Two-faced people. As soon as they landed back in DA, they suddenly crying down diasporans coming home to vote for labour when they themselves had their people. God doesn’t like hypocrites.

Once again the PM comes to your rescue and offers tablets to help you out. Tsk tsk…just a few days too late. On December 8th you got the maladie so now we will give you the tablet. Gulp…

“for the privilege God has given you, through the people of Dominica to continue from where you left off during those weeks of preparation for this passed election.”(Elizabeth Xavier).

Elizabeth, once again have to demand that you simply shut up, you bring God into everything, the god, that cause Skerrit to win the election is the god money, and the bribing of people, and I can name names.

I know how much they got in cash, and in material for building homes, I know many young people who were bribe with houses. God Jehovah had nothing to do with the result of yesterday. While some of you in England, Canada and America are happy with the outcome, the suffering continues in Dominica as of this day.

You suggest he continues from where he left off, from where did he leave?

    The answer is nowhere!

I can’t imagine that our people are so damn dumb! The man has destroyed the country, within his fifteen years, and now you are suggesting he continues where he left off. You Elizabeth has nothing to loose, for as long as you live the Canadian Government must take care of you, so you could care less about the suffering in Dominica.

Time will tell, there will eventually be a revolution in Dominica; that is the only way the nation will rid it self from the hands of the dictator. Whereas you are yet poor, every labor candidate had more than a million dollars each to bribe the people in their constituency, if they gave away 10% of that to the hungry soul’s the rest goes into their pockets, that is more than you ever dreamed of in you life, now ever will own in a bank.

And the rest of you idiots had better understand that, for anyone to conclude that God, has caused Skerrit to win that election, is like saying God condones hunger, and murder. Skerrit spoke about extending a olive branch, if he is serious, ask him what is he doing about the frivolous law suit he filed against Lennox Linton. Ask him if he is going to peruse with that crap!

    • December 9, 2014

Telemaque once again, you only read the first few lines, and yes, that is always as far as you can go; copy and paste all you want, but you have no authority over my message, so continue to huff and puff until you run out of breath–once again you cannot stop me!

And not only that, God is always on my side, because He knows that I give the glory to Him and Him alone–Prime Minister Skerrit is just the same–that is the reason I have sided with him, from the day I read his message 3 years ago, when I got myself into the things of politics.

Sorry for your disappointment, but God wants nothing to do with those “twilight zone” arrogant like you; don’t expect Him to satisfy your futile mentality–you and the others with you. You people need to get the facts straight–God is the Primary Controller, and He will continue to use those who will give Him the glory–not those like you who do not even know how to say “thank you”

And one more thing! Seem as if you don’t get in on DNO if you do not use me as your passport–it must be that I am a very special girl eh. Hehehehehehe! I mean where are your other comments without you adding my name to them?

      • December 9, 2014

Also, you are the one who needs to “shut up” and stop the boldface lies that you are always speaking; you know nothing about no one and about nothing–lying to put yourself up will never work out for you. So stop that futile habit

For they way you have so boldly lied about me, myself, I know that there is no truth in you–all you speak about yourself is lies; I don’t think that you are fooling readers of DNO either–what a weak fellow you are!.

Telemaque, you have no respect for people’s choice. You must learn respect.
You call them idiot. You are the idiot; always criticizing.
You sound like a dissatisfied, mean unhappy man. This is what your comments depict.
When will you comment positively? Do you ever give compliments? Do you know the meaning of compliment?
People pray to God and ask His Divine Assistance. If it is granted, they are pleased. If it was not granted, with their strong faith, they will say, God knows best. This could be for either Party.
I am informing you, under the leadership of Prime Minister Skerrit, Dominica will be far better off. This is why the majority voted for him and his Party.
The law suit must go ahead because Linton defamed their character and in public.
Linton promised when he won the election (not if he won; this is how pompous and presumptuous he is), he would take legal action against whom he assumed wrote the letter to the Taiwan authorities. He threatened them while being a candidate. He doesn’t know who wrote it, if they did in fact write it.
Those who voted DLP are not idiots. Those who voted UWP are the idiots. Let us see if all they promised the people, those who especially won in Roseau will fulfill their promises. We took note and are waiting to see the results of their promises. They better deliver otherwise the people will be angry and state that they deceived them just to get their favor and votes.

      • December 10, 2014

@ The Facts December 10, 2014 “Linton promised when he won the election (not if he won; this is how pompous and presumptuous he is” That comment of yours here, is exactly the disgusting mentality, which I have notice among those people of UWP

That is the reason I continue to remind them that God is in Primary control; the decision must be made by Him first and foremost. He causes that decision to be on display through His humble servant, here in this world

The Prime Minister reminded the people that their voice is the voice of God–I believe he is a man who give the glory to God, that is the reason he will always have the victory to rule over Dominica and her people–let us continue to pray to God for continuous wisdom, understanding, strength and peace of mind–on his behalf–as God guide him into his ruling our Dominica.

This election was an eye opener and really gave us a very good opportunity to see the country voted. First, in the constituencies where UWP won that is, Roseau Central, North, South, Marigot, Wesly and Salsbury, have always been seen as the brain engine of Dominica, although I must add here that the only reason Skerrit did not buy more voters and imported more strangers to vote in Roseau South and Roseau North, is because he and the labor operatives really wanted to get rid of both Ambrose and Timothy but they did not want to fire them before the election because they feared losing it. So they used their brain this time and allow the voters to fire them instead. The east coast such as: Salibia, Castle Bruce, Grand Fond, La Plaine and I will add Roseau Valley are maybe the most vulnerable parts of the country, so buying votes there was very easy for Skerrit.. The south (excluding the Roseau seats), west (excluding Salsbury) and north are all very vulnerable with high employment, uneducated and hungry and as a result, it’s no secret that Skerrit likes to feed on such weaknesses that he himself has created for his own gain

How has productivity in Dca become even greater over the last 5 years? How has employment risen over the last 5 years? How have peoples lives changed over the last 5 years? How have DLP adhered to their last 2009 manifesto? I have read it btw, as the latest one – which was badly written and executed – still is offering empty promises and unrealistic targets and goals.

Congratulations to the Labor Party for winning the election. Congratulations to the United Workers’ Party for its wins. We look forward to a strong opposition in the next Parliament.

As a christian people with morals and values we cannot ignore the level of unscrupulous behavior by the Labor Party – free tickets for people in the Diaspora; the massive handouts to party supporters; the immense “sewo” opportunities. Hopefully Dominicans are better off because of these freebies. No longer will anyone in Dominica ask anyone in the Diaspora to send home barrels because the Labor Party has shown that it has millions of dollars within its coffers to give to supporters.

We look forward to true electoral reform: the cleansing of the voters’ list, an end to bribery and a true adherence to the laws of our land.

I want to Congratlulate PM Skeritt,, but I must say he made a few mistakes he should have never took out Ms. Shillingford from Wesley, and Ambrose and Timothy are tired and should have put new blood there, and next Alvin is not aggressive enough compare to Issac and that was Labour mistakes. I hope the PM read my comment.

This is another election decided by money. Those greedy preachers always tell us that money answers all things and the result today clearly supports their theory, though out of context. Again those preachers have always said that wise men came from the east, but the result today says fools and greedy people are from the east as clearly Salibia, Castle bruce, La Plaine and grand fond were all bought by Skerrit and therefore I now conclude that fair election in Dominica is a thing of the past and our children’s children will inherit our folly

U poor backward people make me sick. All u keep complaining about this self seeking, self motivated man, but here it it he is reflected. Misery has been appreciated by Dominicans for many years now since & I’m positive before the Eugenia Charles era. If I wanted to be a politician in d/ca, all I would do is follow in the footsteps of the great ones who went before me; past, & current PM’s, & pass FREE money, a few block parties, & FREE alcohol for all & I could also GURANTEE myself a seat, or 2. It tears my heart apart to see that TYRANT/ DICTATOR back in office yet once again, but what can I say the SLAVE MENTALITY apparently still live in the hearts & minds of u ASS BACKWARDS people” & that’s SAD. It’s morally WRONG to have this much love for your OPPRESSORS m fellow Dominicans, I only label you as being ass backwards because of the lack of wanting to be free from the YOCK of BONDAGE in which you INSIST of putting yourselves under. In closing, I WOULDNT have voted Mr. Lenox Linton into power my DAMM self, the FUTURE of the country would’ve been worst than what this SKERRIT had left behind.

Congratulations Pm on your re-election victory. the people has spoken and we all must respect the people’s will. I also congratulate Mr. Lennox Linton on his election to parliament. We look forward to a positive and improved performance by the opposition. Dominica’s democracy require a strong opposition to balance of what government is doing.
The election results is a bitter sweet taste for Roseau South. We lost our beloved MP, Mr. Ambrose George. He has only himself to blame. He ran a lacklustre campaign with a tired manager. He did say last election 2009, that he was not going to run again, then suddenly changed his mind. A different candidate for the DLP would have made the difference. Mr. Joshua Francis of the UWP on the other hand must be congratulated. His is a very sweet victory. he worked hard despite the odds, had a desire to win and appealed to the youths. Dominica take a bow and great job. Let us see what happens next. Will Mr. Linton accept the results of the election?

Election reform has to be looked at, this can no longer be a back issue. The speaker of the house has to respect the opposition and allow them to do the job that they were elected to do.

  49. December 9, 2014

First of all congratulations to you, Mr Roosevelt Skirrit–Prime Minister of our Dominica– for the privilege God has given you, through the people of Dominica to continue from where you left off during those weeks of preparation for this passed election.

Personally, I am very glad that you have been re-elected; for now I am sure that what was already in process will continue likewise–instead of starting all over again with a new group and leader, since that group was not in harmony with your initiatives for the development of our country–who knows how long new plans or initiatives would go into effect with a new government–like the opposition in Dominica

I will always believe that God is the Primary controller; we have to pay attention to His commands and to do them accordingly–your re-election should give, perhaps another leader and group to pull themselves together for their appointment–maybe even after the next 5 years is over–God’s Will be done

And so I will continue in prayer for the sake of peace, harmony, and tranquility among us Dominicans, if only we can get rid of the negativity–that is so uncalled for mentality–from our minds.

We, Dominicans need to come to terms with the fact that the government of a country are appointed to keep the “initiatives” of all sectors well structured and organized for the sake of fruitfulness all in all–we cannot just sit down and wait for the job the government has created–there is no survival for any nation with the kind of mentality.

Canada, where I now live is a rich country, because of the mentality of the majority of her people not solely her government–infact the government would have very little financial resource if not for the work production of the people I worked in Toronto for 30 years–seven days a week, sometimes, on most of my work days I had to be at work by 6: 30am–I had to leave home at 5:30 in the morning–imagine those winter mornings!

We need to understand that success does not happen overnight–we cannot go from a $100.00 today into a $100.000.00 tomorrow–that is the idea that our young people do not want to get our of their minds, but they have to–for thriving takes quite a while.

We need to learn that nothing in Life comes without a struggle; but perseverance motivates hope and hope is from God–he will not disappoint us. All in all, we people have to make a move for ourselves–when we are in the age and shape to be able to do so

Solomon of the Book of Proverbs speaks to those of us who nurture laziness or idleness; he uses the ways of the ant as an examples, as he says here at Proverbs 6: 6-11

Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
    Which, having no captain,
    Overseer or ruler,
Provides her supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.
How long will you slumber, O sluggard?
When will you rise from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep—
So shall your poverty come on you

In fact, as strong and healthy people we should be ashamed of saying we are unemployed much worse that we are blaming it on the government.

    • December 9, 2014

Indeed, some people get things in life easy
without a struggle-Skerrit, ten years on office,
      no prior collateral.
Currently he is the wealthiest Prime Ministet in the region.
      4.5 million villas, 1.5 million mansion on a $6000.00
      salary. He worked hard really?
On the backs of the poor, ignorant and downtrodden
Dominicans. He made them loyal to him,
by having them come to his office and beg for crumbs.
Is that dignifying? He took away their self esteem,
give them low moral and psychologically enslaved them.
He took away their will to work by making them dependents.
If the ‘grass is greener in Dominica,
why do stay in Canada and wake up on the snow to be a work for 6:00am,
because you are not a “spring chicken”.
The young people who needs to work come
Dominica and find them the jobs.

Liz I do like your last paragraph and so sad, those very same ones who get jealous of young striving men like themselves who did not just seat idly by but did something and to even in those cases, they say is it Handouts that those persons receive if they perceive they support the Government. Those propaganda spreads like wild fire and then jealousy, envy and hatred are directed at those seemingly (they owe loans etc) who are not seating idly by doing nothing.

Your articles I do love my sis as they always bring out your Godly wisdom in world affairs. Let us continue to pray for our nation. We also need to pray for our people especially those vulnerable to be used by wannabe Representative. I do also agree with the PM that ignorance need to attacked now. For this is a negative effect on some persons who think that the Government can employ everyone. We need to make a move for ourselves and persevere with hope which as you rightly said is from God!

      • December 9, 2014

        @???????? December 9, 2014

This is the first time I have been so involved in the things of politics. but do you know why? Because my faith and trust in God, told me that Dominica is my homeland and the people are my people, I needed to be a voice with them for the sake of our welfare and the development of our homeland.

As I read at DNO and face book, I said to myself, God is not going to justify the desire of those people–of the opposition–otherwise He would be giving the glory to the haughty, the proud, and the self-conceited–but He has said no flesh shall glory in His presence. And so said so done, He didn’t allow it. Through His God fearing people of Dominica He called out the verdict for our sake.

Just as Prime Minister Skerrit said: “The voice of the people is the voice of God” I embrace that truth and to God be the glory–our Prime Minister knows who is standing behind him–as long he continues with that attitude, he will be the Primary leader in government of our country.

We need to remember that in ancient days, the Kings of Israel ruled for tens of years–David for example ruled for 40 years–God is looking after those whom He has chosen to rule, just the same, today

Thank you for your commendation and yes indeed, let us stand together for the glory of God, as He watches and protects His people who are our people in Dominica

humbled? really bruh? Are we using words out of context now because after all you’re supposed to be the ‘smarter’ candidate, right? I mean, even my blind grandmother saw this coming. When you resort to bribery, cheating, fraud, bullying and countless other tactics we may never know about what do you expect? Please don’t for once think that this was a fair election because you just BOUGHT 5 more years. Relieved maybe, but definitely not humbled. Thank God for a strong opposition because maybe they can have an audit of the current government and shed some light on your unscrupulous and shady behavior AND maybe we can amend the constitution re: limited PM terms in office. Oh yeah, and I hope you make good on your promise and repay your followers with the tablet, the fridge, the microwave, the $1000, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the unicorn, the flying pig and the many perishable goods you promised (which were probably made in China). Congratulations Honourable Prime Minister to you and the Dominica Labour Party. This is one for the history books. What a legacy!! This was a very important election and you came up victorious. We have given you a mandate to continue the important work you have been doing. You are the best person for the job at this time and Dominicans have showed you and the world that we have total confidence in you.

There is a stronger opposition, they cannot use the excuse anymore that they cannot do anything. We have had occasions where we had only one person in the Dominica Opposition in Parliament and that did not prevent the people’s work from being done.

Congratulations to all the candidates on the DLP side it was a good fight win or lose you did a very good job. If you thought the campaign was tough now comes the work, but we are confident you can do it.

The UWP now have a chance once again to prove themselves. The people have given you some more seats, not because you are better, but to give you a chance; use them wisely and do the job you were elected to do. No more nonsense as the peoples parliament and boycotting.

We were fed-up of it, that is why we could not give you to run the affairs of the nation. Be truthful to yourself, would you choose you over the PM and the DLP? I don’t think so. So from today show your gratitude for the few important seats you were given and make us see you were worth our votes or we will take them back.

5 More Years. Thank you God for watching over Dominica during this election time. All Praise and Glory are yours.

Congratulations to Prime Minister Skerrit on your re-election. I recognize it was a tough campaign but on your part and that of your ministers, it proved successful for you. You won with flying colors, by a landslide. Red did it!
Doubtless to state, all your supporters in Dominica and elsewhere in the world are elated for you and your elected ministers. We were confident that the Dominica Labor Party would win this election. Be it from afar, we are rejoicing with you.
I wish you and your successful ministers all the best. I am confident that under your continued leadership, much more will be achieved progressively in Dominica, for the Dominican people with no exception.
Will you permit me to state, today, December 8th in the Catholic Church the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is being celebrated . I thought, this is a great day to have an election. First thing this morning and also throughout the day, I prayed to Our Lord Jesus Christ and Our Lady to assist Dominicans to vote wisely and to assist you in winning this election for another five year-term. I always pray for Dominica and also nationals. Thank God you are the triumphant winner.

    December 9, 2014

A Stolen election – we all know of countless Dominicans given tickets and spending money to fly back home to vote and then fly back. We want visibility and accountability – We want these peoples name to be seen all over and yes reported back to the countries they flew from and be penalized.

It is a tragedy that Mr Fontaine did not win. I say to Fontaine leave them in their gutter politics and let the young ones wait for their handouts with no ambition.

I am calling on the DOminican people to demand answers and that these crooks be held accountable for their crimes. They have committed a great crime here – It was so glaring that money was used to send people back home. How can these people be so patriotic – vote and then go back to their lives in New yoirk, Flordia , Canada etc.. SHAME ,SHAME., SHAME….we wait

If this monster ( Skeritt ) won fairly then Dominicans will get what they asked for . I cannot as an educated man sit and accept that my people can be that shallow . It is heartbreaking what has happened here. Dominica will never see a better line up than was seen with the UWP.

What holds the people in a state of stupidity? – greed, illiteracy and alcoholism

I dont want any of you asking me for a shot of rum – you can go red clinic and get that.

      December 10, 2014

      Stolen,

Who exactly are Dr. Fontaine and Eunica Victor? I thought that they too were Dominicans resident in the diaspora. Why is it that they could come here and put themselves up as candidates but the others cannot come home to vote?

One of the characteristics that I have noted in the opposition party both leadership and supporters is I can do it you can’t! So many people resident in the diaspora were involved in the opposition party’s campaign. Some openly declared their cross-over from Labour and stopped short of telling us what they were expecting from that act ; others were not so direct but we can read between the lines. I am aware of Dominicans living overseas for many years who voted at my polling station and I am reasonably sure that they were not there in support of the DLP. Did anyone ask who paid for their tickets? Is that an issue for those shouting foul on their side?

And everytime that comparison is made you hear “two wrongs don’t make a right”, but only when it pertains to the Labour party. Perhaps you people need to use the time given for the next five years to understand that life does not revolve around only you. After that you may be ready.

Skeritt has won the war but not the battle. The battle begins when Skeritt is going to have to find over one billion dollars to fund all the promises he made before the elections. The first battle is to find millions of dollars of back for the public servants before the Christmas. The state of the art hospital to be built in Goodwill and Portsmouth. The international airport and continuation of the geothermal development which is promised to reduce electricity. The renovation of Roseau and Portsmouth. The new Roseau bridge and river side promenade. The multi stadium, including an Olympic size swimming pool. The expansion of the NEP program and Red Clinic. The reduction of unemployment to 5%. By the way, I almost forgot the famous pit latrines. Winning is one thing, but to leave up to the promises is something else. I wonder if Mr. Linton is not relieved, he is not in Skeritt’s place, in terms of the many promises he made.

Mediocre minds accept mediocrity. Dominica is the best place to lie, swindle, and buy people. Our leader is a reflection of our people. Place where we devalue ourselves and accept all that is foreign as superior. I feel sorry for the level of the mentality of the people. The old just there to see how much they can get before they gone.
I guarantee my last Dollar that skeritt is going to implement everything in opposition manifesto cause he had nothing new to offer but party and crap which is what it seems majority Dominicans want.

It would be “class” if he meant it and if he was even capable of writing such a speech himself. But no, like all the other aspects of this “bought” election victory, it is simply a lie to fool people like you.

It would make all intelligent, right thinking DOminicans much happier if you did not tamper with the election process in certain constituencies. I pray for you as this is my Christian responsibility and at the same time I urge you to search your conscience and realise that these things are so not right.
