PM Skerrit says Dominica performed better than regional countries in 2016

Skerrit spoke in Parliament on Thursday

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said the Dominican economy has grown in 2016 despite setback by Tropical Storm Erika in 2015 and has performed better than other countries in the region

He spoke during the presentation of the 2017/2018 Budget at the First Meeting of the Third Session of the Ninth Parliament on Thursday.

According to the Prime Minister, Dominica recorded 2.8 percent growth in 2016, and pointed out that projections by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank show the economy will grow by 3.1 percent in 2017 and 2018.

“This buoyant outlook contrasts sharply with the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean,” Skerrit said. “The IMF warns that growth for this region will only be about 1.1 percent this year. The growth experienced by Dominica is clearly better than that of the region and it has also surpassed the average for the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, ECCU area.”

He spoke of the government’s goal for Dominica.

“Madam speaker our economic goal of realizing a modern, prosperous Dominica fits well within our overarching vision of a peaceful and just Dominica,” he stated. “These objectives steer our fiscal, economic and social policies as well as our engagements in the international community.”

He added, “Madam Speaker, this is Dominica’s moment and we as a country must seize it. We could cash in the growth dividend of successful economic management with a broad expansion of existing spending programs. That would be far easier…but this government is not in the business of sitting back and basking in its success. What we propose is a bold journey that begins this morning.”

Please reduce the VAT to 10% as we have been doing so much better than the other countries. Even St. Lucia (our so called “sister island”) doing better than us in even bananas now, so what’s wrong with our country? Dominicans wise up! Realize that the government does not care about it’s citizens, but only the amount of votes it receives to stay lying to your face! You face been warned!!

Politicians are the most dishonest, deceitful and mendacious professionals in the world. When they are voted out of government many of them are dragged before a court of law stand accused of fraud, bribery, embezzlement and all sort of corrupt practices. I saw some recent statistics from the IMF and Dominica was lagging behind every country in the sub-region in almost every important economic category. Mr. Skerrit has to be completely delusional make such frolicsome statements about the prevailing economic conditions in the country. If you are doubtful, ask the average person around the country about his/her daily struggles to put food on the table and keep up to date with the weekly or monthly bills. The PM should stop preying on the ignorant.

Where has this man Roosevelt find the nerve to make a stupid statement like that? Talk is cheap, and talking garbage to people who have no idea how economic growth is accomplished will listen to Roosevelt bogus, and lie comment; and clap!

I challenge Roosevelt Skerrit to produce some written statistics pointing out in what area of the economy this growth occurred. California which is a state Within the United has the fifth largest economy in the world, California’s economy is larger that of Russia, with more industries than most nations on earth, however, in 2016, if I am not mistaken the economy grew less than 4%, and if there is anyone out there who has some statistics or information to correct me pleas bring it forward.

Skerrit brays again that Dominica’s economy is better than all of the islands in the region, only a mad man would make such a stupid comment: I need to ask Roosevelt; is Dominica more prosperous, and more developed than Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua, and any of the rest. With the exception of Antigua all of the islands I mentioned export some product of some kind.

Antigua’s economy depends, on tourism, and indeed millions people visit Antigua, than will ever visit Dominica

There are plenty more industries on those islands, which exports manufactured products, which brings in revenue, and foreign exchange. Dominica main industry is the sale of passports, how can the sales of passports grow the economy of a country? Only fool would try to convince people that Dominica is doing better than the rest of the islands in the region, and only fools would believe that!

This is not the first time Roosevelt made that stupid comment, that guy is delusional

    July 27, 2017

I am not going to dispute our economy did better than that of others in the region but I would like to see tangible facts. Example, as a man on the ground I would like the PM or Mr. Tonge to tell us how many Dominicans that migrated to those regional islands in question because they see a better future there for them, and contrast that with how many from the region that moved to Dominica because they see a better future here for them and their families. Please note that I am not referring to drug dealers that coming here to do there drugs, neither am I referring to CROOKS and crminals like Aliereza Monfared and others who are hiding from international authorities and felt like DOMINICA was the best place to hide, because our government gives good accommodation to them.

You are letting off steam. Cool it! Should you not know that not everyone thinks as you do, talks as you do and also do not all agree with you?
If I were to say that some people do not need the few dollars of salary increase, they would be upset. When they receive it the union gets its share of membership, as when an attorney sues for his/her client and wins. They take a cut. How much is left?
Let me inform you further. Where I reside, when employees get an increase, they must pay income tax on it. By the time tax is deducted, what do they have left?
An increase has to be exorbitant enough that you could go to the store, whichever and purchase something be it that you have to pay tax on it if it is not food – groceries..
I am informing you, it would be better that some of us never get an increase. I have informed my MPP – Provincial Legislature and MP – Federal Parliament about it. Furthermore staff must efficiently produce to warrant an increase.

Don’t be fooled. Going from having $5 to having $6 is 10% growth. Just thst percentage alone doesn’t tell the entire story. Also comparing against latin america means we have to include countries like Venezuela and Brasil who are reeling from economic mismanagement thus skewing the average. Most of the other countries are MUCH better off than us even if they have registered lower growth rates.

Also how much do the funds from the CBI program factor into that equation. Even the PM himself admits that the CBI program is not sustainable so it would be pretty misleading if it was included in that calculation

Those of us who travel at l rady to the other Caribbean island or more specifically the OECS there is no way Dominica’s economy is outperforming the other islands. On the Tarmac in St Lucia I see American, Jetblue, British Airways, Delta, Virgin and more. In port are 3-4 ships. The hotels up north (Rodney Bay) and other areas are doing good. In St Kitts I see 6 ships in port and major airlines on the tarmac. Can we be doing better than these islands with LIAT droping off 10 passengers and our fee hotels operating near 30 % occupancy.
