New political movement gives 18-month deadline for fresh general elections

The newly formed Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD) has launched a call for fresh general elections in Dominica within 18 months.

The MRD is accusing the DLP of using bribery and intimidation to increase their influence.

“The Movement for Restoration of Democracy is committed to turning back the clock on the new culture of corruption which is an imminent threat to the moral fabric of the Dominican society. The Movement for Restoration of Democracy calls for a new round of free and fair General Elections in 18 months to correct the outcome of the compromised December 18th poll under the following terms and conditions 1) updated voter registration and the implementation of voter ID cards 2) fair and equal agreed access to the state media by opposition parties 3) international supervision of the electoral reform process and elections including 4) assurance of the enforcement of bribery laws including the giving of money and other consideration and payment of travel of overseas nationals in exchange for their votes,” a press release from the movement states.

The DLP obtained a landslide victory at the December 18th polls, winning 18 out of 21 constituencies. The United Workers Party won the Salisbury, Roseau Central and Marigot seats. Preliminary results showed that UWP’s Ron Green won the La Plaine seat by 12 votes to DLP’s Petter St. Jean; however a recount indicated St. Jean was victorious by two votes.

Meanwhile, leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Ron Green, who is also a member of MRD, noted that MRD was not a new political party.

“The MRD supports the opposition UWP’s principled decision to boycott the parliament of Dominica as an act of protest against the use of corruption to achieve unchecked power by one political party. The MRD recognises the
necessity for a viable opposition party to counter the dominance of the DLP,” the press release added.

Meanwhile, co-spokesperson for the MRD’s coordinating committee, Attorney-at-law Singoalla Blomquist-Williams, is of the view that there should be a good opposition to make a good government.

“In any democracy you must have a good opposition,” she added.

However, she noted that she has no influence over the UWP’s decision.

“I believe that the people they should consult is their constituents and if the constituents told them not to attend then that would be their [decision],” Williams told Dominica News Online.

So if they FORCE elections in 18 months and Dominica Labour Party wins 20 seats this time, what are they going to say then? And they need to think carefully about that before they go jumping into rash decisions. If i recall correctly judith DEMANDED elections to be called within 2 days ans as such should have no complaint! PM Skerrit has the right to call elections ANYTIME HE WANTS AS A PM so if he ask for it on the 25th of december 2010 i hope they don’t object.

  3. December 30, 2009

This should have been done by you and yours previously , guess you were too busy with your tou patouism . Yes , I do agree that this should be done . However , the elections has been called and won from day one of it’s announcement . Secondly , this devisiveness , fro Lennox and you Mr Green , must stop . The way in which you protray this sweet country is in poor light . We demand further , that you get back into parliament and be the opposition party . That’s the only possible way you can prove your point . Failure to do so , and by anyother means you seek to put our counrty into any unrest , will merit our full fury on you and your MRD supporters and we’re serious . We’re fed up with the way you and Mr. Linton has been …. You Mr. Green and Mr James … were on the fore front of the IPO Commission and has and had the right with information , to act and you never did . Said publicly , that you have no evidence to prove from IPO report , that Mr Skerrit is corrupt , from there , your support , was withdrawn , from your supporters of UWP . Your defeat was celebrated on the Newtown and Territory’s meetings . Your ended it with the Lit skies of wonderful fire-works . It was confirm by Labourites during Motor-cade and at Morgan Heritage … Labour concert . Shame and a disgraceful , detested party .

MRD is another name for UWP.. Ron Green needs to accept his defeat and move on. The people have spoken come on 18 to 3.. How can that be an error? Total victory for the DLP… I am so happy that my vote made a difference. For the people who came from overseas to vote, you all have a right as a Dominican to vote.. let’s be real these UWP people were talking about the DLP giving people tickets to come to vote when they were doing the same thing.. ..his happened to my friend… …gave her the tickets.. So they are hypocrits when they are blaming DLP about sending tickets to other people.. Anyway the people has spoken… 18 to 3 true sweet victory Mr Ron Green it is time to go and relax…….

  5. The Facts
    December 30, 2009

.Some interesting observations about the elections and the spin doctors, clowns and jesters that continue to raise their heads to suit their own personal agendas:
    1) 32 thousand votes were counted in the 2009 Dominican elections
    2) DLP got 61% of the popular vote, over 9 thousand more than UWP who got 35% of the vote
    3) 13 of DLP’s 18 seats were won by a margin greater than 250
    4) UWP alledges that 600 voters were imported

    Some questions:
    1) Assuming UWP is correct; does this change the outcome of the election? The people have spoken sorry SHOUTED but a minority is of the opinion that they know better.
    2) Who selected/voted for the MRD? We just had an election and did not see them.
    3) Who do they represent?
    4) Who is financing them?
    5) What is their agenda?
    6) Do we advance Dominica by launching a pathetic campaign to discredit, distract, disrupt?

I have also discovered that there is nothing honest about the honestdominica website. They only publish articles that are favorable to their agenda or articles that can easily be refuted. ..

now am not sure what the intentions of MRD are. it is very easy to put on a face of reform when other intentions are very clear. On the surface it can seems all good and clear while deep down something else is very much a foot. but their are a few very good point that they are talking about that goes beyond any party.

    1. This country do need some serious election reform not for one party but for all. so i am very much in favor of voter id cards but not a card for a card sake. it should have some serious enforcement behind it. up to date election registration should be a very much needed part.

    2. election corruption laws should be a must. we can pretend all we want but when a party and i mean any party what over flies people to Dominica to vote for them that’s wrong. in any shape way or form. UWP did it and Labor did it. I was offered a ticket to come to DA from st.Thomas which i refused. so let not pretend its not being done.

I think it time we as Dominicans start to think past one party or another and think about what future we wanna shape in this country. their should never be in any democracy one party holding all the power. this entire country sense of government needs to be reformed. and honestly if we keep going down the path were on i can guarantee one day were gonna head down a cliff. chance is not always bad people if its the type that makes a country a better place.

give ron a good seating down in st.kitts and send him back to dominica, he lost 5000 votes from his party because he was asleep and eddison was at work. mr skeritt have the remedy for ron and his merry bunch of lossers, you see if skeritt had no one to come down eddison who knows well how to steal an election would have done worst.in 1995 the brought in people to vote against the freedom party of miss charles, they register people from marigot and wesly in roseau and other marginal seats to give them a win that was done in 2000 and also 2005, this guys were beaten by the best by the boy with toys now they are crying for sweety. mr douglas of st.kitts send them packing before they corrupt your people in st.kitts

But what the HELL is wrong with … RON GREEN ? what is his stress ? what point does he want s 2 make ? what is he talking about ? what sense does it make ? RON are u O-K ? I JUST DONT GET IT. I heard laplaine people say ,ALAS papa boudia – RON e ler pou poe sai. ( rest ).

  10. December 29, 2009

Oh my God. Help these opposing people. Mr. Green now is thee opportune time to rebuild your party and see where you went wrong. Make ammends for the next 5 years see if your party could convince the electorates. But going to the OECS with your issue is not making any sense. You all are the same who complain of other countries interfering in your country business, today you want that same body of countries to help or listen to you.
Accept defeat and move on. LOPS is once again in the air this time it will be for the same people who diagnosed Deceased Dame Eugenia with it.
On the issue of people coming in to vote. The UWP did it and the same people they gave tickets most of them voted against them in the 2005 and 2000. And how you are so sure that all the people who you all are saying that came in to vote did vote or did vote for the DLP?
Labour party did it now and because it wasn’t in your best interest your crying foul. You all have to learn to give and take. The people have spoken. It was always your party’s saying THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE IS THE VOICE OF GOD so let this be finally heard.
Anyway I don’t mind they don’t do to the house after three missed sessions we can call a by-election and Prevost will lose because I will be back home in January 2010 so I definitely won’t miss the by-election like I missed the general election.

Dominicans must be warned that the comfortable elite who comprise the MRD are interested in their own welfare and not that of the poor Dominicans whose backs they are prepared to ride to fulfill their various aims. Where are all these people outside of politics? These are the ones who have self selected to be the ruling class and thus, entitled to win even after a lackluster campaign. Remember that while we are preparing to get back to the normal grind, they are planning to disrupt the business of the people by running overseas to complain to our new masters like a timorous flock of bleating sheep.

My sister and I were having a webcam chat a few minutes ago about the latest news on Dominica News Online and the new group called the MRD obviously formed part of the discussion.

And she said something that made me think and bust out laughing at the top of my voice knowing that she is a strong supporter of the UWP and it goes like this:

    MRD?

“What is that now for the close of 2009 I hearing there?”

Oh MRD, yah man – More Rubbish in Dominica. Skerrit did not buy enough garbage bins!!!

Theres a saying once a man and twice a child, well its so obvious why those desparate folks cant behave themselves – they are all in their second childhood phase. Maybe we should have given them some toys for christmas. It sickening to the bone to see what lenghts some persons would go just for power. The people have spoken – 18 to 3. Isnt that clear enough.

You want elections in 18 months. Havent the masses spoken yet? Bloomquits, Ron, Eddie and the others dont you realise the this is the new generation speaking now. The whole crew should go the the hotels in the east, watch the sun raise, sip on some gin and tonic or suck on something of your choice!!!

They only listen to people who call Matt and Lennox, and totally reject the voice of the people. We were asking for plans and a vision put in a manifesto. They neglected call expecting to win based on what Blessings and Malin say on kairi, matt and dbs.

They are still not heeding the call of people saying “We will still vote out UWP and DFP and give DLP the 21 seats next time come the 18 months!”

Dominicans should be weary of individuals and organizations plotting to subvert our democracy that we cherish as an independent people and non-aligned nation. This so called (MRD) group appears to be a group of disgruntled individuals obviously with external influence, bent on getting into power by what ever means. Dominicans should remember the (PJ) fiasco in the 80’s, this coup attempt failed because Dominicans love their democracy. If any other such attempts are made to overthrow our democratically elected government it will be met by the same response. The rules of our democracy is that you contest an election and the winner is given the mandate to rule by the majority. If Mr Green or any other individuals/groups internally or externally think that they can stage a coup and rule Dominica by force then they have another think coming. I hope that all Dominicans give these guys a clear message that our democracy is not for compromising.

What is greater than the people of a nation, and in this case the people has spoken, its not the few that came from oversea, its more than the majority of Dominicans in Dominica that made this decision, its clear the the uwp did not do enough work through out the last 4 years as opposition to get the people of Dominica excited or encouraged to vote them, this is what the result are 18 / 3.

The problem is the parties in our Country only wants to work when an election is coming around, this should be a constant process through out the exsiting 5 years, the uwp and the dfp has to come to grasp with the results and work now to have a better result in the next elction 2015.

Ordering elections around will only inflict greater lost, Ron learn from your mistakes you were not ready then and you are still not ready now or 18 months from now, deal with the results and work with your peirs to build your bautiful Country.

But what the hell i’m i hearing there nah? These people should accept their defeat and leave the P.M and his government. This constant embarassment of Dominicans by the opposition and their goons is really getting on my nerves, now. The people have spoken and if this attempt succeeds, the DLP will win again and this time they’ll win 19 seats. I suggest that we ask these men to resign and stop embarrasing us Dominicans.

  28. December 29, 2009

Here they go again. I have already spoken about the MRD in the other article where they were en route to ST Kitts. I think they should again read the article. These people cannot be serious. Where is your love of Country. You only love yourselves. Get up and get serious and do some constuctive critism if u must. People are not ignorant anymore when the not so bright looke d up to you all as Lawyer etc. Use your Heavenly Fathers’ given gift to empower and not to hold the minds of the people into slavery by your foolish doings. First Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. Gone are the bougouisie days when only a few went to secondary schools /college and those few held the power within their hands. Hey you a Prime Minister can even come from any inhabitants home in Dominica and not only the Estate Owners or those who have some cash etc. Get up and get a grip. this seem to be your problems that the little and poor persons are being empowered and their children can now aspire and reach to heights that they could not under the old system.

Wake up and stand up and emancipate yourself from mental slavery.. The Electors have spoken. Get down to doing some serious work for your country members of the MRD.

Hey I don’t expect to hear any more nonsensical talk or thinking from you guys. I will pray for you guys.

    Love is the answer.

In 2007 the UWP got a database of over 33,000 names, addresses, dates of birth and telephone numbers when Hon. Earl Williams was the Leader of the Opposition.

The Objective of the database was to have the UWP go on a mass membership drive in and out of Dominica. Why the hell did the UWP not take the advice of the Consultant when that database of names was presented to them?

The analysis was done. Members simply were to reconcile the list with the electoral list and ascertain their followers and to do their ground work of registering citizens as members of the UWP and keeping them apprised of developments in the party and the governance of Dominica. All members would have had an e-mail address complements the UWP to receive e-mail newsletters and a UWP blog to exchange points of view.

Why was this membership drive initiative never undertaken? Why?

Why only 36000 persons came out and vote? Why many of the UWP supporters did not vote though they were on the Island and had access to radio and television?

That is where the postmortem must begin.

Dominicans will again come home for Carnival, Summer, Independence, and Christmas and will obtain their voter’s ID Card and the DLP will be more sophisticated and give their members debit cards and load funds on these cards to pay for their flights to come down and visit Dominica at least 12 months before the next schedule election and a week before the polls.

The UWP simply has to begin to get creative and out maneuver the DLP and any other political party.

The UWP must begin ordering their caps, mugs, pens, water bottles, and other giveaways from now and every year and ensure that their party machinery is ready at any time and do simulation check exercises to ensure that candidates are identified and ready at a moments notice and that all matters relating to TV, Radio and Internet adverts are on their computers and ready and that there is Internet radio in place as well.

    @ Embarassed(and others).

You people are full of it. What is primitive about the system of government. It’s the exact same system of government as exists throughout the English speaking Caribbean(except Guyana). It is the exact same system of government as exists in countries like Great Britain, Australia and Israel. What are you talking about?????

Yes it’s not perfect. And as a developing nation we should always look at ways of improving on governance of our country. But don’t use the short comings of the system to discredit the duly elected government. It is the SAME system that both the UWP and DFP were elected and ruled under. And if I may say…it is the same system that they manipulated while they were in government.

Between 1980 and 1985 the Freedom Party ruled with 19 seats(17 DFP + 2 Pro DFP Independents). The Democratic Labour Party controlled 2 lowly seats(Portsmouth and Salybia). No Leader of the Opposition could be appointed because the two Pro DFP Independents sat on the Opposition side of parliament causing a 2-2 split in the opposition. That was a deliberate tactical move to frustrate any opposition.

Just to re-enforce that the two independents were Pro DFP. These were the only two constituencies in which the DFP did not field candidates in the 1980 elections. And these two candidates eventually ran on a DFP ticket in the 1985 elections.

Nobody cried the sky was falling then. Why are you people trying to make us believe that today Dominica is in such danger with a 18-3 control of parliament by the DLP. As in 1980 the PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN.

Wow, this cannot be the dominica that I was born and raised in, the political system and the state of our politics seem so, so so primitive. Look at the state of Dominica politicians fighting for power when the country dying. A New party should be formed, void of greed, a party of transparancy. Members finances should be checked (can’t have people coming into government with 2000.00 in their account to have 400,000 after 5yrs) ACCOUNTABILITY people!!!

At the end of the day its just sad to see the country dive deeper and deeper into lawlessness, poverty and being led by a leadership who feeds on that. All those who think that they can benefit from money they didn’t work for, a handout, cash for support, be warned it will only last for a while it won’t be long till they end up without. THen what???? Today I am embarassed to be a Dominican!!

MRD good luck with ur efforts, but the concern for the nation that your members and supporters share will see much resistance from those whose best interest it is to continue leading dominica into the ground. Those persons outside of a political party who stand to benefit most they should be investigated. Follow the money.

Guess Ron Green cannot accept being out of the house, so why not form another party and call for election within 18 months. He is the same person who called on the prime minister to call election, the prime minister called election, then Ron said it was not fair to call election so close to christmas. He called for observers he got them then he said the election was not free and fair. Someone again tell me what he really wants.

What he should do is help the 3 UWP members of the house be constructive in opposing when there is need to oppose, again it is not going to happen if ther are out of the house.

I think this new organization is just another extension of the United Workers Party. It is obvious that they still have not recovered from the crushing defeat suffered at the last general elections. You asked for elections and then you got it! You lost and now you want another election! Instead of using the five years to restructure the UWP they ask for another general election!! I mean come on! I will not go back to the polls so soon for another election. Just agree to the decision by the electorate and start a rebuilding process!

Well said Constitution. I personally believe that the Dominica is too much about RED, GREEN AND OR BLUE. It should be more about what is best for the people and until the colours do not blind the public then election and the process of electing will forever be blurred. Yes, each is allowed to his/ her own political views, but it is a shame how DOminicans have become so caught up in the colours without knowing what and whom they are supporting. No what your party is about and what you are fighting with your neighbour over. Be liberal, conservative, whatever the case- but know what you are fighting for and not fight because your neighbour received something and you didnt’. not fight over the small things- FIGHT to keep the indepence which we have been blessed with, FIGHT to mantian a stable economy, FIGHT for jobs, proper housing, social security, better wages, FIGHT for the good fight and what is right for you and your neighbour, for your children’s future.

I can testify of the ticket I got from UWP to come and vote in the election? So what is there point. ACCEPT DEFEAT AND MOVE ON.

Well, this is just more of the same from the sore losers in the UWP. It is indeed a shame that they cannot accept the results of the resent FREE and FAIR general election. The people have spoken and just because the opposition parties are not happy with the outcome that is no reason to disregard the people’s choice.

While I agree that an effective opposition is a crucial element in a parliamentary democracy, if the people choose to limit the opposition to 3 seats in the House of Assembly it is certainly their right to do so. Rather than cry foul and bitch and moan about the outcome of the election, perhaps the UWP should take a long hard look at their own faults. If they clean up their act and perform in opposition with a degree of intelligence and statesmanship they may be able to improve their lot in 2015. However, if they continue to oppose simply to oppose and offer no ideas for the development of Dominica, they will likely remain merely comic relief in the political arena.

Enough sour grapes guys! Try to show some dedication to the continuing development of Dominica and represent your constituents in the House with enthusiasm and commitment. Maybe next time you will not be so embarrassed by your poor performance at the polls. But remember the change has to come from within.

Here goes another effect of ‘ lost of power syndrome’. I thaught the meeting at Pointe Mulatre was to select the opposition leader and Senators?

You all coming with a new name the same way you had question marks all over the place.

Labour was not the only one who paid for votes.

I’ve already made this contribution on a different issue and I must do it again and again.
All I am asking for is reform in government. It is obvious that our system of government is dysfunctional. There is a great imbalance in the decision making process- the prime minister and the cabinet have way too much power. In my opinion the people should elect the board of directors for the state owned radio station; the people should elect the board of directors for the electoral committee thus the decision to initiate a voter ID should not be the call of the PM or Tony Astaphan but that of the people. The IPO should also be decided by the people, the chief of police; Attorney General. Let we the people select management for these various entities Politicians and partisanship totally excluded. Let these offices operate independent of the party in power. Let us select these positions every 2-3 years. We the must have continuous control not only during the general election.

After evaluating the last 10 years of government and particularly this last election I believe that the constitution puts way too much power to the PM and his cabinet. I’ve seen just way too much arrogance coming from those in power; it was the same during the UWP reign and much worse over the last 7 years. Dishonesty and greed among politicians is by no means new to our politics however coupled with world wide super high speed information technology the politicians are up in arms with organized crime. They are better able to steal and hide their ill-gotten gains.

I’m sure that there will be nay Sayers for my proposal but if we are all honest with ourselves RED,BLUE or Green we will agree that our system of government and power is not balance. If we take away the ultimate power from the PM and cabinet then there will be no cause for concern- the people will demand honest criminal investigation from the police else the chief of police is gone; the attorney general will insure that every man politicians included follow the laws of the state; the integrity committee will no longer be one of vacillation else we vote them out within two years(let them go give communion in church) . The electoral committee would be forced to uphold the laws regarding honest election. We will therefore have no reason to cry fowl after a general election.

The system can work – I am just so tired of all this political gimmickry, the lies and crookedery. I am sick of looking at the faces of those who say nothing in the mix of a widespread allegation only because they are looking for hand downs from the PM and his cabinet. I long for an accountable government not those who seek wealth as the primary concern.

I long to see our laws in action when it comes to politicians. Declare your assets ALL OF IT- DNO I’m not making accusations here. This is not a political campaign but a call for justice for all D/cans.We deserve a fair and honest government. Let us hold these scum bag politicians accountable for their actions.
