Political parties to launch manifestos

UWP DLP imageBoth major political parties on the island say they will be launching their manifestos in the run up to general election slated for December 8.

The ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) will be launching its manifesto to the public in Trafalgar on Thursday evening, while the opposition United Workers Party say its launch will take place on the week of November 24.

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said at the launch of the DLP’s campaign last weekend that his party’s manifesto contained “well thought-out plans and ideas for which funding has been secured.”

He said the DLP is the only party with “fully printed and readily 2014 manifesto” just four days after general election was announced.

“I could put it on the screen and talk about its contents tonight, but I am going to leave that until next Thursday,” he stated.

Meanwhile leader of the UWP, Lennox Linton said the party’s manifesto will be launched at least 10 days before the December 8 poll.

He said at a press conference on Wednesday the decision to launch the manifesto at that time was deliberate judgement of the party’s strategy team.

“Our manifesto is going to be launched in the week of November 24th and it will be launched at the very least 10 days before the election date,” he said. “That is our plan. That is how we are contesting this election. We have to decide for timing for this, and timing for that. And in the deliberate judgement and thinking of our strategy team the best time for the launch of our manifesto is during the week of the 24th of November, 2014.”

It is obvious that DLP will launch their manifesto first as they knew when election was being called. lol. why is that a brainer for some people (I mean for labourites)? stop being senseless and superficial. With all that said, however, 10 days are too short a time for reviewing a manifesto.
    God bless Dominica.

The UWP is in trouble. Mr. Linton has been consistently demonstrating poor LEADERSHIP qualities. Clearly he is not prepared and ready for effective-laser- focus leadership.

Poor choice for leader of a political organization.

Manifesto means nothing especially where Skerrit and the DLP are concerned. Did he not present a manifesto in 2005? After five years in office how many things from his manifesto that materialized? What from the 2009 manifesto that manifested? The things he accomplished were not in his manifesto. I mean on what page of his manifesto can we find the following:
1.After 10 yrs in power he would become the richest Caribbean politician that ever lived?
2.Did he ever tell us he would be the owner of villas, hotels, and other undisclosed businesses?
3.Did he ever tell us he would sell diplomatic passports to criminals all over the world?
    4. On what page did he tell us that he would step out to facilitate his deputy to sign and issue licensed to big bang?
    5. Where did he tell us that they would not push to to ensure the persons involved in the burning of GON Emmanuel’s house on Christmas of 2010, and the attempted murder of Mr. and Mrs. Emmanuel in the same fire bomb?

Based on all of the above and many, many, many more reasons, manifesto is just another waste of money by skerrit.

Once again Skeritt amazes me by his public utterances. The man appears to be in a state of political desperation. Does he really believe by launching his manifesto first will cause him to win the elections. If we have to go by the promises made in the manifesto of 2009, . many promises were not kept, therefore, launching it now or never will not make any difference. The election is already won by UWP Team Dominica. I say this with full authority when I saw the thousands of Dominicans that were at New Town and the statements made by Skeritt at Wesley.

Once again the DLP has shown that it is an organized Party. UWP has been calling for elections for quite some time, yet, they are limited in campaign funds, they will be presenting their manifesto a mere two weeks prior to the Elections, failing to give the undecided voters ample time to analyze their plans. Instability to the highest degree! UWP, please step aside! DLP, all the way!

One wonder’s what’s all the hoopla of the Roosevelt Skerritt administration about being able to present a manifesto four days after the election date was announced. Any person with an iota of commonsense would understand that is utter nonsense. Skeritt seems to forget that it was only his baby Demetrius and himself who knew the date for elections. That being said, one should ask the question as to what significant impact does a manifesto have on the enhancement of the lives of the people of Dominica? In terms of a political manifesto, all it is is a published verbal declaration of the intention, motives, or views of the respective political parties. Among some of the things that a manifesto does, is that it promotes new ideas with prescriptive notions of carrying out changes the political party believes to be made.
The government in power has been presenting manifestos to the people of Dominica for the past three general elections, and we realize that at the end of each five year term the content of the manifestos were never accomplished, and the economy of the country has worsened, but for a few who have enriched themselves. The majority of the electorate won’t read, digest, and understand the content of those manifestos. In my view the electorate of Dominica will be better served if the message of development is taken to the nooks and cranny of the country. In my view an open debate between the leading political parties would be more beneficial to the average Dominican that the presentation of manifestos that are not worth the paper they are printed on for the most part.

        Andy, I disagree.

Of course you are free to express your opinion about whether or not the promises in the Manifestos over the last fifteen years or I daresay those of preceding governments were kept, but I do not agree that a manifesto is a waste of time.

That document, to my mind, is or should be a coherent articulation and bringing together of the various policy statements which have been made by the parties, (some of which sometimes contradict each other) in a clear plan for the development of the country in the short, medium and long term. It should also give some indication as to how the plan will be funded and implemented so that voters can decide on which plan is more realistic and achievable. It is also a yardstick by which to measure the progress of implementation and to hold the presenters of the manifestos accountable if they get into office.

A debate is also good, of course except that very similar to a job interview, not everyone who can shoot off the right responses eloquently can necessarily actually perform when given the job, so neither is fool proof but the manifesto is a more tangible and coherent presentation of plans and policies.

I watched a debate between the US Presidential candidates Obama & Romney some years ago, two brilliant men but in one case Romney obviously had a rehearsed answer on a particular subject, no doubt outside his area of expertise, so no matter what question he was asked that response came back over and over again. Eloquent response but not answering the question. Just an observation!
