Members of the Salybia Dominica Labour Party (DLP) constituency executive are meeting tonight to choose a candidate who will represent the party at the next general elections.
China-educated Casius Darroux and UWI graduate, Cozier Frederick, are vying for the position.
“I am a prospective nominee, yes,” Frederick, a school teacher, told DNO on Wednesday. “The Salybia constituency has had a serious problem with representation over the years and I would love to represent people at the highest level.”
Recently Darroux’s name was mentioned as a possible replacement to the present MP, Ashton Graneau. On Wednesday he confirmed that he is on the cards for the top spot.
Both men told DNO on Wednesday that they have big plans for the constituency and the Kalinago community.
“It’s about moving the community forward; it’s not about the breaking down of each other, but about empowering each other,” Frederick said. “And it’s kind of sad when you have communities that have only one person who think they can represent. I think every community should have at least three prospective persons.”
According to Frederick, there is no push by anyone or any group to elevate the Kalinago community.
“So at this point I feel, that I have certain skills that I can lend to the community itself to help them boost their image and help with employment and build self esteem and to move our small community forward,” he said.
Some of the issues he wants to look at include land ownership, the impact of indigenous conventions around the world on the Kalinago people, and using the community as a tourism product.
Darroux mentioned that among his plans is to have an all inclusive society.
“For me it’s going to be on a basis of inclusion … it’s not a matter of me deciding something and dictating it to the people of what I want,” he said. “I would have to bring all groups together and tell them ‘OK this is my idea what else can we add to it?'”
He said total inclusiveness and communal empowerment as well as the recognition and the participation into the decision making process has been lacking “to some extent in the community.”
He also plans to enhance culture, agriculture, education and to expand social programs, if chosen and eventually elected as MP.
The Salybia Constituency consists of the Kalinago Territory, Atkinson and Antrizle.
The Kalinago people has a third opportunity for a Kalinago to be Prime Minister of Dominica. If such an opportunity is allowed to pass them by, it is their own problem. Should the UWP win the General Election, the deputy leader of the party is Mr. Claudius Sanford, God forbids and something happens to Mr. Linton, the first Kalinago person in the world to be a Prime Minister will come from the Island of Dominica. Kalinago People, the choice is all yours.
we all know whats goin to happen next year for election. it happen every election for the pass 20 year. it does not matter who going up for labour in the KALINAGO territory their know what it takes to win the vote and the heart of the kalinogo people.

For the rest of Dominica who are not living in the Kalinago Territory, if you all are not aware of what is going on and the persons in question, say nothng or make no comments and allow the people to decide for themselves. Mrs Burton is a hard rock when it comes to developemnt in the Territory. All and most of all the projects in the Terrirtory that is presently ongoing are through her efforts her brain work and pen to paper. She has been involved in Local Government for the past 30 yaers and more. Very instrumental, adminstrative promising woman. If all you do not know about her check her back ground. She is presently pursuing her PHD – Ha ha ha. Give her a break. Cozier has always been involved as a community person down to roots, music, youths, church, educating the young minds, culture, name it and an organizer. He has just completed studies at UWI with a Degree in history and political science. Mr darroux has recently returned from China also a graduate in economics. It is time for proper representation and future development for my little ones to come. We want the best not party politics and persons to dictate to us. We have a mind of our own. We have mechanical engineers, Chemical engineers, agricultural, accountants, doctors, lawyers, culture, talent, nurses, a bit of all. please Dominicans give the Kalinago people a BREAK to decide for themselves. Claudius is not behind either very promising young gentleman.

Mr. Cozier Frederick has made his first blunder. I have a very strong feeling he will not be the preferred choice. By the way, the UWP Team Dominica did declare, when they win the General Elections, the Kalinago Chief will automatically become the Minister of Kalinago Affairs.
