“Shameful” – UWP senator describes Government’s treatment of Opposition

UWP Senator Ezekiel Bazil

The United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the Wesley constituency in the 2009 General Elections and newly named Opposition senator Ezekiel Bazil has expressed his disapproval  in Government’s treatment of the Opposition and is convinced that better treatment is the only way to improve national development.

Bazil, who addressed a press conference last week, said that Government’s treatment of the Opposition was shameful.

“On the question of the treatment of the Opposition by the Government, I dare say that it is an utter shame and the sooner that this government realize that they must treat the opposition as part of the governance of this country the better t is for national development. The disregard of the opposition is shameful,” he stated.

He referred to what he said was Government’s total disregard of the UWP’s request to electoral reform as one major examples of such ‘mistreatment’ of the Opposition.

“ Let us not forget that the request for electoral reform by the opposition and the reason why the Opposition is still out of parliament t is simply because of the total disregard of that request. There is nothing requested that’s unreasonable, every part of the request made by the opposition is what is expected in a democratic country. The behaviour of the government, the way that it is being treated it is obvious that there’s a high level of disregard and disrespect for the opposition,” Bazil stated.

He reiterated his call for the fair treatment of opposition.

Mr. Bazil did you take a doze of dumb or foolishness? UWP took on their own and kept away from the House and other activities; UWP are the ones who have placed themselves in that position. I wish for the love of country that this time a round UWP will take a different position and go to the House to represent the people….UWP have wasted too much time doing foolishness…the energies should be spent building the party and getting ready for next elections.

    @liberalone:

Your writing adequately represents the Labour Party;s approach to governance

all that you have said is right on target —maybe you are part of the planning team to advise on dissing the opposition: punishing them for the successful boycott; punishing them for exposing the issue to the wider caribbean ; and punishing them for destroying you all at the recent polls which absolutely reflected the nation’s sentiment against the government and support for the UWP…..

IS THIS WHY THE GOV’T IS ALSO DOING “NOTHING” FOR THE PEOPLE OF DOMINICA? CAN YOU FIND IT IN YOUR DONKEY-HEART TO STOP GRUDGING THE POPULACE?

if the PM or Mr. Ambrose said provision will be made for all 21 constituencies, that includes the 3 UWP members of Parliament who won their seats so it is not only for DLP ministers.

    Fair treatment!

You create your scandal, you wanted fresh elections after u all was defeated and you want the Government to come behind closed doors to negotiate with all you. For What????

If it was not for the provisions in the constitution that said after three sittings missed seats are vacated your name as a senator would have never been mentioned!!!!!

UWP only got serious when they send Prevost to the House on the third consecutive sitting knowing that Prevost won his seat by just three votes knowing my relatives did not vote and if given another chance Allo would surly defeat Prevost.

Man u not making any sense: you cook you food, share your food and u want Skerrit and d government to come and put all food in all u mouth. Man eat and drink your wine of astonishment and grapes by yourself.

You and UWP fighting for voter ID cards and taking a closer look at your demands you are saying to all Dominicans this: If you want to vote in Dominica elections you must never leave Dominica and go nowhere!! Not to work , not on vacation, not to study, not to marry, not for funeral, not to buy , not to sell, not to compete, not to pray, not to go on pilgrimage, not to gaadaay, not for medical treatment, ahfenn, ahfen, ahfen!!!!
How d hell such demand making sense is beyond me.
What is it you really want? If in opposition you all behaving like dictators, well, well, well, is not when all u get in d house of government Hitler will dwarf all you in comparison man.

One fing I know is slow and steady does win d race. All u start with bang and braying like Jack Donkey. But I in Skerrit place will call d next seating of parliament until December 2010 and let d Treasury save some more money!!!!

Why would you give offices to men who never attend parliament. No one knows if they are serious or not cause all they do is talk on the road like goats eating grass on the side or the road.

Mr. Bazil you must understand that in any democracy, the Minority will have its say but the Majority shall have its way.

Labour Party now forms the Majority hence they shall have it their way while your party will have its say.

The sooner you learn this the better

  21. August 9, 2010

Skerrit will hire a babysitter for Bazil and company..what a bunch of jokers.

  22. August 9, 2010

Hon. Bazil, attention to electoral reform would get deserved attentiion from government if it were introduced as a bill in Parliament. When members of the Opposition decide to abscond their responsibilities and select a vulgar pulpit to lagonise important issues that affect those who elected them, the new members are not even accorded the courtesy of learning Robert’s Rules for Parliamentary debate.

but what the hell is that for me nah? Here is man whose constituency was neglected for 15 years with a parliamentary representative residing overseas. Now that you get a little chance to have an official funeral when you die (I do hope you have a very long life)…the first words out of your mouth is this rubbish. SHAME!!!!!

    Mr. Bazil,

Every request that the Opposition makes does not have to be granted by the ruling cabinet. The UWP’s decision to stay out of parliament is their own fault and theirs alone; can’t blame anybody for decisions you now see were unwise and counterproductive to your own cause. Of course your party has the right to stage any protest within what is legally acceptable, but your party also has the responsibility to accept the consequences and blame, if things do not turn out the way you thought it would.

This is not a child’s game where if my needs are not met then I take my ball, sulk and run home. This is an adult, mature dialogue that must happen, not in the interest of a particular side of the government, but in the best interest of the people of this country. Whilst I definitely agree that there is indeed great need for electoral reform (and I have felt this way since the 1980s as a youth) I think our way of trying to get things done needs some serious improvement.

On an off note: If the Opposition expects its requests to be granted as soon as they are barked out then I would expect that the Opposition would agree will the legislation, projects, suggestions and recommendations enacted and made by the ruling party. Fair is Fair!

Those fellers just Like baby …. Why did’nt they do all that when they were in power. you all had the chance to do all what you are asking for now. Let us ask for things in our villages to benefit us young people. Spending money on a nice health centre in one of the large villages would be better than stupid reform and ID cards.

Dear Opposition, the governing party did not ran a campaign against you in the last eclection to play cat an mouse with it’s opposition, in fact asI understand it it is the opposition who has been boycoting everything that the goverment is trying to do, an office building downtown, a proposed hotel project in Marigot and so on. The best advice that can be had is that the oposition take an offensive approach to the development of the country, rather than to defend their right as opposition.
