Skerrit vows to stand by Pinard; calls supporters to arms

The Prime Minister (left) exchanges a fraternal embrace with Pinard
The Prime Minister (left) said the party will stand by Pinard

Political Leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), Roosevelt Skerrit, has vowed to stand by former MP of Soufriere Ian Pinard, who resigned on Tuesday evening while at the same time has called supporters to arms as a by-election looms in the constituency.

In an emotional address to supporters on Tuesday evening, Pinard said his resignation comes in light of allegations against him, which he said have affected him in many ways.

Skerrit said he was saddened but touched by the resignation.

“Brother Ian Pinard, colleagues, comrades, Ladies and Gentlemen. Ian Pinard has just grown 10 feet taller in my eyes,” he stated. “Tonight, I am saddened by his resignation, but I am touched by his honor. Ian Pinard is a stalwart of the Dominica Labour Party. I want to say here tonight that as Leader of this Party I shall stand – four square – next to my Comrade.”

In an apparent swipe at the United Workers Party, which has been heavily criticized by some in a matter concerning its former Deputy Leader, the Prime Minister said, “We shall not turn our backs on him. We shall not throw him to the wolves or under any bus.”

He told party supporters that they are all one family sharing in Pinard’s pain.

“His happiness is our happiness! His grief is our grief! His pain is our pain! His struggle is our struggle….for we are one family,” he remarked.
“Tonight, I salute Ian Pinard for the principled stand he has taken. I want to say to him that I admire and appreciate very much, his pledge of commitment and support for this party in the weeks and months ahead.”

The Prime Minister pointed to the by-election which must be held in the constituency within 90 days, stating that he wants the seat to remain under the DLP banner in a big way.

“As Ian said, we do not want this to be a long, drawn-out process. We want normality to return to this constituency, in short order,” he noted. “Accordingly, I will be meeting with Ian and the members of this constituency group later this week to commence the process of selecting a successor candidate and readying this constituency for battle. Comrades, this is a seat we must not and will not lose. I am hereby calling all members and supporters of this great party to arms. The Soufriere seat is near and dear to the hearts of all Labourites.”

He added, “I want the full strength and energy of the party to be at work in this bye-election. It is Ian’s wish that we win, and I am saying here and now, I want to win BIG…as a tribute and in honor of the outstanding work of Ian Pinard in this constituency. Comrades and Friends, tonight is a very emotional night for us all. I do not wish to say much more at this point, but to thank you all for coming out, and to thank Ian Pinard for his selfless service to Dominica and to the constituency of Soufriere.”

He promised the party’s full support to Pinard.

“Ian, the Dominica Labour Party shall stand shoulder to shoulder with you, in your struggles. We wish you well and I give you the assurance that your place in the bosom of the Dominica Labour Party shall forever remain accessible to you,” Skerrit said. “Go in faith, knowing that you are in our thoughts and prayers and that we shall, be there, for you.”

Prime Minister Skerrit you have the right attitude. It is a godly thing to do, to stand by Ian Pinard. This is a humiliating situation for him. He needs all the support he can get.
Keep in mind you critics, putting it mildly, as Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Let he who is without sin caste the first stone.”
People make mistakes and some very serious ones which affect them. The saying, “If only I knew.” How many people have stated this in their lifetime?
With God everyone is entitled to a second chance and they do get it, if they seek it from Him. God is the Judge; not sinful human beings. He knows the extent of everyone’s sins. Those who judge will be judged two-fold as Our Lord Jesus Christ told us and, “The measure you measure to others it will be measured to you.
Some say they are Christians but do not project it. God knows more, what they do behind closed doors and then they come on this Website playing they are goody two-shoes and unforgiving.

Endings always come at last; endings sometimes come too fast _ they come too fast but they pass too slow. It is like the singer and the song; when the singer is gone the song still plays on or in the case of the sinner and the sin.
However, take heart comrade!, The Christ is here to stand by you and just remember that beyond the darkest hour, there’s a light beyond.

True leadership! when a member of the team falls, you pick him or her up, you counsel them ,remount and learn to ride better. The first protection to the children are their father or daddy, where are they, so many fatherless children and now you all got found out. A-team leader indeed. We SHALL NOT BE MOVED.

The Labour Party under the Leadership of PM Skeritt is indeed a family and MP Pinard is part of that family. We should all read the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15.

The PM shows us once again what Leadership is all about. We should not rejoice when others find themselves in trouble, instead we should sympathize with them and ask how can I help? Sometimes depending on the situation there is absolutely nothing you can do, but the person in trouble knows you are there and they are not alone. Tomorrow, we may need someone else help, we just never know what tomorrow brings.

All of us are imperfect human beings and would appreciate our family and friends lending their support and show us love, especially when we find ourselves in situations unbecoming of who we really are. This is very important for Dominicans especially our children to see and I complement the DLP Leadership for giving hope to humanity.

I listend to the news clips with Pinnard speaking like he is the victim in all this and the Prime Minister of the country vowing to stand by him and I was so disgusted and so sad for my country. These people by their reaction to such serious allegations are proving beyond any doubt that they don’t care about Dominica and it’s people. I shall post here an open question to which I am sure they will not answer: would you have stood by him and been so vocal if the child who accused him of molesting her was an Astaphan? Or a Raffoul? Or a Nassief? Is she just too poor to be relevant? By teaming up with the alleged abuser you all are abusing that child all over again. It is sick!!

Dennis Hastert got a 15-month prison sentence in a case tied to a sexual abuse coverup
    J. Dennis Hastert, once among this nation’s most powerful politicians, was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Wednesday for illegally structuring bank transactions in an effort to cover up his sexual abuse of young members of a wrestling team he coached decades ago.

Mr. Hastert, 74, who made an unlikely rise from beloved small-town wrestling coach in Illinois to speaker of the House in Washington, sat in a wheelchair in a federal courtroom here as a judge announced his fate.

“The defendant is a serial child molester,” said Judge Thomas M. Durkin, of Federal District Court, in a tough rebuke of the former speaker before issuing his sentence. He added, “Nothing is more stunning than having ‘serial child molester’ and ‘Speaker of the House’ in the same sentence.”

Leave the peaceful constituency of Soufriere, Scotts Head and Gallion ALONE! Why all this violent talk that will cause division and hatred all over again? I thought you just asked us all to come together? How about we have a call to arms to protect all our innocent children?

WHAT A GREAT PLOT! SUCCESSION PLANNING

Skerrit does not let any opportunity go by:
He gets Ian Pinard to resign from the House so that the Soufriere seat is now free and clean of scaandal to be contested and won by his young DLP chosen one. Given time, Joshua Francis will be pressured to resign his seat also. So TWO potential seats are now open to the DLP. The UWP majority kicked Joshua out as deputy leader, so no support for Sikiri from UWP in his campaign. UWP has no campaign funds because they squandered it all paying off Lennox’s repeated court fees and fines. DLP will run their own man, leaving Sikiri out in the cold.

So DLP wins Soufriere and Roseau South with young upcoming members. By the next election in 2019 the DLP team will be packed with youthful experienced candidates who have served as ministers of government and who loyally owe their positions to Maestero Skerrit. The DLP sails on with a new generation of leaders. Brilliant! “Haiey chien, mais di denli…

Skerrit, it is one thing to be the ring leader of a circus, its another thing for the ring leader to take his stupid act outside of the circus pit, into the streets and into his house!

In what way are you going standing with Pinard?

Are you suggesting you are going to manipulate, and intimidate the court to set him free if he is found guilty of a crime, or are you going to stand with by demanding the case remains dormant in the court after filling; and never see the light of day in court?

Your most stupid and ridiculous rubbish in your pathetic ramblings. Your stupidness where you said you are calling your supports to arms! Are we to assume you are about to arm your supporters to go and intimidate people to accept the inappropriate behavior of Pinard, and if they do not, your supporters should assassinate them?

That is what ISIS do these days you know; they demand subjection those who refuse are murdered.

Typically, when there is some kind of scandal/legal issue regarding the member of an organization or a celebrity that endorses a product, that person is most times asked to step down or let go, and the company doesn’t have much to say in support or against that person until the matter is cleared up or dealt with.

Skerrit is over here claiming that he’s “standing next to his comrade”. Not very professional in my opinion. But then again, it seems like Dominica has this anything goes, and lack of accountability thing going on with regards to its politicians.

It is unfortunate, I have not heard Skeritt offered one word of courage to the young child or her patents. In fact, he has not even acknowledged a letter sent to him three months ago from the twenty men of God with recommendations in terms of the protection of children. I understood a bill to strengthen legislations for the protection of children has been in his office for approximately three months. I hope the people of the Constituency of Soufiere are talking note as to the kind of leader they are dealing with. What a sterling contribution. Pm Skerrit keep demonstrating his leadership qualities. When a brother falls we all feel the pain. When one member of the body is hurt we all are hurting That is scriptural. We will therefore stand with Ian. We will not abandon him or throw him to the blue wolves. He is ours and we will stand with him.

Now Sikiri, what is it you expect to get by holding on. You have been ostracized by your party. They have levelled all manner of evil against you. They directed you to resign even before you were formally charged. They have turned their back on you. You chose an attorney that you are very comfortable with given your knowledge of his skilss and abilities. That earned for you the ire of your party colleagues. They claim you should have stayed inhouse an dchose a less competent attorney to represent you. That is not having your best interest at heart. Why then do you continue to say you are a member of a party that has clearly shown it has no use for you?

Yet, Dominica’s politics is propelled by lies, deception, evasion, manipulation and corruption…none of which Linton wishes to engage in. Thus, when it comes to political strategizing IN DOMINICA, none can stand in the shoes of the Supreme Leader and his team of nefarious advisers and handlers! These men and (women) do things that seems straight out of the movies. The men and women of this Government do not act like representatives of people or leaders in the direction or development of this Country, but rather like actors following a script and acting out a very elaborate play in the Arawak House of Culture. Everything seems to be calculated to bring applause and praise from the crowd of dedicated Labourite fans. Skerrit “appears” to have grown 10 feet taller in this speech also..I just wish he could be genuine in all he says and does but Alas, we all know otherwise.
However I just want to note the level of diplomacy with which The Labour Party handled their situation in contrast to what is happening on the UWP side.
This highlights the difference in character of the accused men on either side. Nothing to do with Party Leadership.
Truth is, a man who thinks too highly of himself, denies vulnerability and will refuse help due to pride. Humility is very different from an appearance of humility.
This situation exposed Joshua in a very different light than in what he initially appeared. I hope he will reconsider and Humble himself. Condem what he is accused of, really bro? You said it yourself accused of. He is addressing the man not the accusation, so what is there to condem. Do you people ever stop to consider that not all what you are accused of doing you did. Accusing someone is simply getting up one day and just saying something, it takes no effort. Proving the accusation is what’s . That’s why you are innocent until proven guilty.

“Weh” I could pick an article from DNO of a crime committed, call the police with detail information and here it is, you have been accused. We must becareful not to condem people before time.

        April 27, 2016

Excellent point! How often we have heard about crimes being committed and rewards are being offered to any information that would lead to the capture AND CONVICTION OF THE PERPETRATOR. The reward is not for alleged information. Information that would lead to the capture and conviction (I suppose after due process) of the suspect. Does that mean anything to our civil society. Innocent until proven guilty is not a character threat of the UWP. Once they say you guilty! You guilty! Even if the court find you later not guilty as per well established rules and regulations that have been in place for generations for the good order of our society, the UWP is not interested in that. They have their court. No wonder much of the comments here have already condemned Pinard as a guilty, guilty and more guilty. PM Skerrit’s regard for the rule of law makes him a guilty party as well. Its a “blue kangaroo court”. I wonder if the UWP would like to be labelled misusers of clients funds. Should we…

    • Jean Simpson
      April 27, 2016

You are damn well right. The PM is supporting Pinard “politically”. the PM is in no position to judge the guilt or otherwise of Mr. Pinard. the Labour party does not have any internal court that does not respect the rule of natural law or the law of the land. The owner of the party said that the party machinery has its own court (magistrate, judge, jury, litigants etc). The presumption of innocence until proven guilty is not a principle that the UWP recognizes or has written into its constitution. So once the Marigot maffi say you guilty. You guilty. Period.
So don not blame the PM for embracing Pinard. You see many of us could be taken up on the same allegation as Ian Pinard and Sikiri. Until that day, then we can cast apsersions and accuse the PM of wrong-doing. Every pig has its Saturday anyway.
What Joshsua Francis has to do is to do as Ian did. Step aside and devote his time and energies to his family and practice. The marigot mafia will kill him. Stop fighting them.

Off course you’re gonna stand by him. Well said Mr. P.M., that’s what real friends do. T …………… Birds of a feather will always flock together. United this corrupt Labor government stands, divided the passport selling agency will fall. They will weed out themselves one by one. First one down, more to come. Stay tuned, more bombshells to drop where that one came from!!!

Lol. You can see clearly what is important to the prime minister. Not a word from Skerrit on child abuse. One thing i will give him props is he knows how to use the poor, the accused, the downtrodden, the uneducated, to his advantage. He is an expert at pouncing on vulnerable people for his own glorification. The only. Thing this man cares about is keeping seat to continue to abuse the country. You will see how fast the tone changes after case is done.

Then again the poor, the accused, and uneducated not hard to use… To make it worse that’s the majority of people in Dominica you just listed. I would never want to lead Dominicans If I not getting things under the table because most of them are not worth it.

Skerit “called supporters to arms?” What is this, a war? Is that the same man who wants to put Dominicans to put their differences aside and unite for the good of the country? I seriously think Roosevelt Skerrit has mental issues. There is something wrong with hm psychologically, that is my opinion.

I must give it to the Supreme Leader and the other strategist of the blessed Dominica Labour Party when it comes to using every opportunity and/or incident to manipulate the media and in turn the general public. This apparent swipe at the United Workers Party AND Joshua Francis is in fact masterful! First, with the retirement of Pinard, they are making it clear that Joshua is not a responsible and honourable man in his actions. Then with the Supreme Leader’s statement that the blessed Dominica Labour Party will not “throw (Pinard) under the bus” it masterfully contradicts the implication that Joshua did not do the honourable thing by implying that the UWP turned their backs on him (Joshua). It is a bit disingenuous of course, but this is Dominica where thousands of Labourites consider the words of the good Doctor as the word of God! It is about taking the focus off this Government’s dismal record of broken promises since the last election and keeping Soufriere red, red, red!

This is political spin at its best. He makes Pinard resign in secrecy and then he stands in front of us and makes it look as if he has nothing to do with it. Furthermore he calls the members of the party to ARMS to battle for the constituency! Where in the world, apart from North Korea, Zimbabwe and such likes, does a PM get away with talk like that? This is incitement and not worthy of any democratic leader. How much longer are we going to tolerate all this.

I am so sickened by the mockery these so called leaders make of Governance in this country. Why are the good leaders in this country allowing this level of social decay? It is harder to lift the country from the gutters than to prevent it from sinking down. History will not be good to you deceitful people.

Skerritt has yet to say anything about child abuse in Dominica. It is important that you address these issues because mothers want to hear it from you too.

Yes those same ones. Shame on those who take advantage of under-age children on which ever side of the divide, but more shame on those mothers who see them come home with things they did not buy for them and which they know they could have not got in any other way but someone giving it to them, but do nothing about it.

The same ones who dress them up from ten years old like little …….. and parade them up and down. Those same ones who have no time to train them or instil in them much needed moral values. Those same ones who keep quiet all the time as if they don’t know what the children are doing, until there is a big fish to catch or bring down. Shame on the men, shame on the mothers and fathers, Shame on all, I say!

Sorry folks but this also had to be said and everyone is saying only what is convenient, but taking away responsibility from where it belongs will not change anything!
