Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan is describing a recent confession by Denny Shillingford about an early fire bombing at the house of a former magistrate as another political scheme organised to mislead the people of Dominica.
Shillingford confessed that he was paid in part to conduct the bombing on the home of Glenworth Emmanuel on Christmas morning. He said he is coming clean because the organizers did not stick to their end of the bargain.
Shillingford, who is currently at the State prison for another offence, said he was not paid enough to conduct such a crime.
“I went in and I spread the gas all in the kitchen, all on the cylinder. I almost even burn myself …” Shillingford told journalist Mat Peltier in an interview.
Shillingford said he was paid $400 “but after I realized who it was and whose home it was and I understand what was really happening I proposed US$40,000. He said he would give it to me… up till now”.
Meantime Astaphan said Shillingford’s confession feels like Dejavu. He said the entire confession was concocted by several individuals opposing the Roosevelt Skerrit-led administration.
“In the early 1990’s it was Edison James who said he had a tape recording of Gonzales making a confession that the former deceased Prime Minister Eugenia Charles had bugged the offices of the United Workers Party. Edison James said he had concrete information on the matter. Several years later it’s others…” he said.
Astaphan said the individual in question is notorious and his word should not be taken seriously.
“Dominicans need to know who Denny Shillingford is. He has over 50 criminal convictions. He has a long record stretching from Capuchin to Scotts Head of criminal convictions and jail time. He was recently sentenced to four years in prison. He has a notorious reputation as a criminal and someone involved in criminal activities,” he said.
Meantime police chief Cyril Carrette said investigations into the December 25 fire bombing is ongoing. He said all efforts are being made to ensure that this matter comes to closure.
Carrette also said that information given to the police by the individual currently serving time at the state prison on another matter is conflicting.
The police chief has also refuted claims by the public of its involvement in protecting an individual believed to be an accomplice in the criminal act.

What is interesting is that as soon as the confession was made known to the public the police was ordered to go arrest Denny Shillingford for a case that was pending three years ago. They hastily proceeded with the case and sentence Denny to 4 years incarceration. Wow Wow Wow. That is all I can say. If the behavior of the authority is not one of desperation then what is desperation.
Denny has become a national treasure – you play with dogs you get fleas. Now the ultimate plan was to hire a foreign hit man but desperation drove Grant to a an unprofessional criminal with no scruples. Just imagine Denny was all over the place selling Grant stuff which he took from grant’s house. Denny actually confessed that he broke and open grants house on two occasions just to recover the payment he was promised. The man is prepared to incriminate himself by all means and yet the police refuse to take his confession seriously.
Like Wilshire Isidore should be seating in the rest up for 12-24 hours under going serious interrogation. Alas this case had already been dead on arrival – Earl is a US citizen and it will not be very easy to have him extradited
The circumstances surrounding this fire makes this case a slam dunk for even the most inexperienced criminal investigator. A genuine criminal Investigation of this matter should pursue the information provided by Danny until the bottom of the confession basket fails. The total collapse of the confession basket would indicate that it is time to pursue new leads but keep Danny’s confession on the back burner (keep it warm). Why? Because criminals more often than not have some information about criminal activities whether these activities are directly or indirectly related to the case in focus. Danny is a seasoned criminal and seasoned nonprofessional criminals by nature are not disciplined there will be inconsistencies in everything that they do and there will be inconsistencies even when they are being truthful. Even in attempting to tell the truth a criminal of Danny’s caliber will depict inconsistencies because they try so hard to gain the confidence of the investigator. To them it’s an investment and a proof of credibility for the next their crime. Seen it all.
I say all this because it behooves me to think that the investigating officers in Dominica would totally discard Danny’s confession simply because there were a few inconsistencies in his confession. Sometimes the little inconsistencies in the motion of the brush is what makes a painter famous. Sometimes the big picture is what matters most particularly when the big picture is the only painting in possession.

– Did Earl Grant quit Dominica after Mr. Shillingford made his statement to the police?

First, the public needs to understand that when the dust settles there will be only one victim Denny Shillingford. This matter have from it’s inception being tried in the court of public openion and persons on both sides have used it to make mileage to sway public sentiments. The general public needs to take a step back and ask themselves one question; who would most likely be contracted to perform such a crime? Would it be someone with a clean criminal record or one with the propensity to be involved in criminal acts? I think the later may be more possible and it is analogous to persons who are sick going to Pharmacies for drugs or one of a crack head sole purpose is to get the next high and so on you can insert your own ideas. Therefore, Denny’s convictions makes high a better condidate to perform such a crime. While the case needs to be tried in court it leaves a lot to ones imagination when the information is making the rounds in every facet of our society and the world at large which cannot be good for Dominica’s public relations to prospective tourists. Tourism is too fragile for our country to be playing fire like this case after case. My fear is that we have not come to terms that we are in a global village and image is everything for a person planning a trip. In fact all one has to do is search in Google to find information about any country. Finally, please people cool heads need to prevail and let us stop trying these cases in public and allow the Judicial system to restore it’s credibility.

As a concerned citizen I am very disturbed by what is happening in Dominica and the level of dirty politics by people who continue to put party politics before country. Concerning this confession, I don’t understand why Mr. Shillingford made his confession to the Investigative officer in the presence of Mr. Linton. and Matt of Q95 and his Lawyer, Mr. Bruney. Why was the nation station, DBS radio or Marpin and other journalists not present? Just sounds iffy to me. A confession? Is this guy aware that he faces serious charges of arson, two attempted murder charges and attempted murder of a member of the judiciary? These crimes must be investigated thoroughly and let the chips fall where they may. No matter who the criminals are, they must be put away for a long, long , I mean, long time.
Obviously, he was a participant and a witness since he was allegedly paid by others. The police is duty bound to collect the evidence, charge the criminals and let the judge and jury decide their fate. This is not a matter to be tried in public. Whoever is guilty of the crime, let them do the time.

In the DNO pictures, the white table cloth that was on the table in the kitchen did not even scorch. It remained as white and pretty as ever. The cloth on the iron table was still hanging on it. In the kitchen on the counter that was under the window near to the vehicle got burned a bit. This is nonesense!

Truth and justice should never be dictated or depend on which side of the fence one is standing.
