The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has put plans in motion as it prepares to face the Dominica Labor Party (DLP) in the next general elections, constitutionally due in 2015.

Former leader of the party, Edison James, told a delegates conference in Castle Bruce on Sunday the “time for change is now” and called on the party faithful to put their all into it to ensure the DLP is booted out of office.

He named 12 candidates of what he described as a “winning team” pointing out that the “new captain and his selectors will complete the squad.”

The candidates are:

Isaac Baptiste-Castle Bruce
Joseph Isaac –Roseau Central
Higgs Adams-Soufriere
Monel Williams-St Joseph
Dr. Thompson Fontaine-Grand Fond
Claudius Sandford- Carib Territory
Hector John- Salisbury
Ronnie Isidore- Mahaut
James Alexander- Grand Bay
Ezekiel Bazil -Wesley
Lennox Linton –Marigot                                                                                                                                 Danny Lugay – Roseau North

“Aren’t you excited?” James asked. “Are you not excited at the team that we are building?”

He said the DLP will be kicked out of office when “bold and capable men and women, come forward as candidates offering themselves to serve their fellow man and woman to serve in the highest court, the parliament.”

“Change is a must not an option,” James noted.”Come forward with input ideas and programmes.”

At the conference, James was replaced by Lennox Linton as the new political leader of the UWP.

In his final address James urged the new political leader to keep his eyes on the prize.

“That prize is the opportunity to create for your people a society that is fashioned and molded in decency, in democracy and in a well rounded development where people come first,” he said.

    It appears to me that a leader’s qualification is of more importance than their integrity. The point is whether he is qualified or not the process of selecting him was free, fair, and democratic. The event which took place at Castle Bruce was sooo different from the way the DLP went about its affairs during the time of Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles. Remember guys the back stabbing attitude Pierre Charles had towards Rosie? and can you guys remember the back stabbing attitude Mr. Skerrit had to Pierre Charles? Things are not so in the UWP camp. UWP does not operate like that. Even when it was the issue of Earl Williams over Julius Timothy that was handled differently. Mr. Timothy thought that he being the next leader was a fait-a-compmlis affair but Earl Williams did not think so that is why he went around lobbying the delegates to vote for him and of course the eventual defeat of Mr. Timothy. My question to you Dominicans is has THE PM’s qualification cause him to be an honest person in public office? Has the qualifications of THE PM caused him to govern the country without all this negative controversies( BIN bobol, Unpaid land transfer fees, fertilizer bobol etc) Can we confidently say that his qualifications are more important than his honesty? JUST THINKING!!!!!!

      Honesty and integrity does not characterize politics and politicians – don’t be deceived. Politics is pure deception in every sense of the word. People get too emotional and out of control when comes to politics and politicians.

    This is a good team but so far that is a team of 12 out of 17. I do not see that team winning Mahaut, Roseau North, Roseau Central and probably soufriere. Carib Territory is a toss up. Is there any other beside the 12 mentioned that we can win? We got alot of work to do.

  10. September 3, 2013

    Deception is the essence of Politics. EVERY politician or political candidate embalms his/her promises and the people, being charmed inhale the pleasant fragrance with eyes closed. In addition, their promises are often overlaid with gold glitters covering the dark lies beneath.

    Their inflated promises, at the onset, are received by the gullible and hopeful with jubilation like a child with an air-filled balloon. They jump and skip around being entertained by the colorful balloons as they float in the air; but they will soon realize it is only a moment of bliss as their joy flattens when truth defeats deception. They will soon realize that all that glitters is not gold and every inflated promise will eventually diffuse.

    Only God keeps His promises. So when it comes to God it is believe and He will show you; but, when comes to politicians it should always be SHOW ME AND I WILL BELIEVE YOU.

    When Lenox was nominated as leader of UWP, PM Skerrit said it was a “backward and inappropriate” move because Lenox does not have a degree. Ok Mr. Skerrit and your fanbase please read this statement you made in your congratulatory message to President Nicolas Maduro when he was declared the winner of the election in Venezuella sometime in April 2013, and then we need you to answer the following questions. Here are statements you penned and worded:
    “I am elated to welcome you to the council of leaders of the region. I have worked very closely with you over the past four years and I am fully aware and appreciative of the vast knowledge and skills that you bring to the region at this crucial period in our development,” he wrote.

    Now answer the following questions sir:
    1. To the best of your knowledge sir, does your friend president Maduro have a degree? The answer is no! Was it a backward and inappropriate? But his vast knowledge and skills that he would bring to the region were crucial right?

    2. Late PM Pierre Charles who was the deputy leader of the party when you got converted to the DLP and after the death of our late hero, Rosie Douglas, Pierre Charles served as PM at a time when the likes of yourself, Ambrose, Austrie, Vince, and others had a degree and were qualified; Did Pierre Charles had a degree? Was it a backward and inappropriate move?

    3.The political father of the DLP and Dominica is the late EO Leblanc of Vielle case. Did he have a degree? Did he even attend high school? Did he serve the nation and the DLP well? Since you are from Viellecase like EO Leblanc, Do you know of a particular family in the said area that could not stand a bone in the DLP and EO Leblanc?
    DNO, please allow us to have a friendly conversation and don’t delete me. I am not making any accusations just simply asking some pertinent questions. Thanks DNO

    let me say this if any politicians want my vote they should tell me what are they going to do for d/ca, where are they going to get the money and how are they going to proceed with their plan. people like me do not want only talk, and so far as I see it the DLP is doing exactly what they said they would do. so in other for UWP to get my vote they would have to do a lot of convincing.

      Man: You will have to explain to me in detail what the DLP are doing for Dominica. You are right the DLP is exactly engaged in bobol, giving out money to poor and vulnerable people who need skills and job to work and earn for themselves tat they pay into social security and taxes and not be fooled and turned into handouts of money al the time. That is not development. Linton is right in that we have to first get rid of this corrupt uneducated DLP politicians who rob our treasury of its limited money. The DLP enjoy just giving out money and this is fraud. So Man go out there and not just do the “listening and Watching” go out there and campaign for change under the new trusted leadership of Lennox Linton and his committed staff.

      It is so interesting how we try to justify things in Dominica whether it be the Govt. or the opposition. My post will concentrate on the opposition. I know education isn’t all needed to run a country but it is necessary. We cannot try to resurrect all the dead leaders who didn’t have a degree to justify Lenox position. If this is the case we will have to Govern Dca as a country in the 1800 etc. I say that because Lenox had the time and the opportunity to attend a higher learning institution and he failed or choose not to. What does that say about him? Does he have any interest in it at all? If not how is he going to address education in this country? Now, with the team presented, what makes him more qualified that the other members? Is it because he has no degree and as such he is special? The opposition in my opinion has shot themselves in the foot by making a bad decision. Look at the leaders in the Caribbean today. Can you tell me one without a degree? It is a backward move and an insult for us as a people in this era to have Lenox as our Leader. Is that the best that we as a nation can do? If so then we not ready for progress and is backward in our thinking and full of chat with no substance.

        intelligence does not measure what school you attend or whether or not you attend school.
        Intelligence means: logic, abstract thoughts, understanding, self awareness, communication, emotional knowledge and planning also problem solving. All of these qualities Lennox Linton has.
        One does not need education for this.
        Education VS intelligence are two different things.

      You mention school but can you really compare these time periods. Johnson, the most recent president you mentioned died over 140 years ago. Men of the social standing in those day actually we very intellectual. The read many books, engaged in serious matters of public importance, and surrouded themselves with others of the same or higher intellect.

      It is really embarrasing that some of our politicians/leaders have no idea how to speak or write properly. I definitely think our leaders should display some acceptable level of academic success to prove to us, the people, that they are competent in achieving goals through hard work and dedication it takes to obtain a degree.

      George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799)
      Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865)

    Thank you very much Mr. James for all you have done for us over the years and for this great team that you handed over to the new captain who no doubt will continue to build a complete team of 21 talented players that are ready to play and win.
    It has often been said that when we point one finger at a person we are pointing three at ourselves. I said this to ask Mr. Skerrit if he realized that when he referred to Mr. Linton’s nomination as “backward” and “inappropriate” because according to him, Lenox is not qualified since he does not have a degree, if he was pointing three fingers at himself?
    On April 18, 2013 DNO posted a copy of the same PM Skerrit congratulatory message to President Nicolas Maduro and here are some quotes from Mr. Skerrit’s letter: The Prime minister said he is happy to welcome Maduro into the ‘council of leaders.’ “At the personal level, I am elated to welcome you to the council of leaders of the region. I have worked very closely with you over the past four years and I am fully aware and appreciative of the vast knowledge and skills that you bring to the region at this crucial period in our development,” he wrote.
    Did you all realize that Mr. Skerrit highlighted Mr. Maduro’s “Vast Knowledge and skills” that he brings to the region at this crucial time in our development? But why did Mr. Skerrit not refer to Maduros’ qualification instead? After all, Mr. Maduro did not attend colledge and we are not even sure he made it to high school; yet the double-town Skerrit was elated to welcome him. I wonder how President Maduro felt when he heard how Skerrit Rubbished Lenox, who like himself has “vast knowledge and skills.” I hope Mr. Skerrit was not throwing stones at Mr Maduro since he doe not have a degree and I also hope he was not throwing stones at supporters of our former late PM Pierre Charles, who also did not have a colledge degree, and I also hope he was not pelting stones at the political father of the DLP and Dominica, the late EO Leblanc, who did not even make it to high school. Stop throwing stones and pointing fingers MR. Skerrit! We can see who you throwing stones and pointing fingers at.

    • Yes!YES!

      I guess we have not moved on and need the dead to run this country. Lenox doesn’t have a degree because he choose not to have one. That shows that he lack the vission then to see himself in such a possition and one can say that he lack the vission now to be an effective leader. Without the necessary qualification he said that he was an investigative jourlanist and we accepted him as such because we thought he was qualified. Had he done this as a lawyer or a doctor he would have been arrested and jailed. Imagine Lenox medically examining you and you found out that he is not qualified to do so?

      Thank you Sir/Madam,

      Appreciate the time and effort that you have taken from your busy day at work to comment on Roseau Valley and Lennox, who I can assure you are both busy at work to get Dominica back on a path of prosperity. I am also sure that you gave my comments thumbs down and that is okay.

      The truth is, we are happy to engage you and others in this ongoing debate with our fellow Dominican on issues of national interest, without maipuis, malparle, mauvais lang, unnecessary attacks on people’s character or vilification of others. In fact, we wish that this spirit of genuine and respectable public debate will permeate through to the DLP‘s leadership and the Prime Minister would not be afraid to engage in such necessary public discourse.

      We do regret that you are now a demoralized Labourite in light of the rapid winds of change blowing around you. However, in the interest of the betterment of the country sir/madam, we urge you and others like you to join us in this timely and necessary transformation of our country.

      Writing only on behalf of Roseau Valley- not Lennox Linton- who we know is very capable of doing so on his own behalf, it suffices to say that we do not believe that we have the answer to everything. However, we can no longer allow you, Tony, Lawrence Simeon, Savarin, Mervin, Bonnie and Clyde, Sogo, Ducreay, Marlyn, Mammy and others to continue the spin, propaganda and lies without a challenge.

      Simply sitting back and doing nothing is a betrayal of country and conscience. Like Randy Aaron repeatedly says, we must speak and speak we must for Dominica in response to Arundel Thomas, -If Dominica could talk.

      Dominica is talking through us.

    Write this down in your note book: This UWP team has the potential to upset the DLP and get MR. Skerrit out of power. Election is two years away and election is not going to be held until the last minute. Skerro is going to use the next two years to fix every little corner road in DA, give millions in red clinic, build little cabays and call them houses and give as many scholarships as possible. He will buy the election again and five years later, we will still be asking what is happening in our country. We will still owe Venezuela millions.
    Our people need confidence to believe that we can get an international airport, just like every other country of similar size. We are the middle island in the Caribbean. An international airport and proper seaports make DA one of the most important destinations in the Caribbean. DNO, what a shame on DBS, the so- called National Broadcasting Corporation.
    Curtis, what a shame as the News Director of DBS. Is that the best DBS could do?
    Perhaps, DBS could simply have ignored what was the biggest news story in Dominica over the weekend and produce it usual bias, one-sided garbage that it calls news.

    DBS headline news was about government’s million dollar expenditure in the construction of police stations in various communities. police stations!

    Following the headline, the news followed with other local incidents and I am shaking my head in shame of this slothful ,bias , incompetent and unprofessional news team for ignoring what was in fact the major news in Dominica.

    But DBS knew that it could not ignore the real news in lieu of its rubbish. Therefore, as an afterthought, the breaking news of the UWP change of leadership was mentioned.

    Shame on Curtis Matthew. Shame on DBS. We hope that when the UWP gets into office and these political instruments of the DLP at DBS are changed because of their gross incompetence and lack of professionalism, that the supporters of the DLP do not cry foul and victimization. This is absolutely shameful and unprofessional of DBS, who coincidentally decided not to have talking point today fearful that callers would be calling to congratulate Mr. Lennox Linton.

    SHAME! SHAME! SHAME ON THE DOMINICA BROADCASTING CORPORATION?

    NO RESPECT

      Okay, so DBS Radio may have grudgingly and reluctantly mentioned the major news item over the weekend on its early morning news package and mentioned it in its afternoon news without giving the major news the prominence it deserves.

      In its afternoon news package, DBS treated the story as an afterthought- knowing that if it does mention the matter, its biasness would be to blatant. This is not the way we expect our National Broadcasting Station to deal with such national matters.

      One gets the feeling that whereas the hardworking staff at DBS may have wanted to report the news in a professional manner, it is the Minister of Information and the Board of Directors of DBS who gave instructions to the staff and forced their hands. It is not for me to make excuses on their behalf. Let them defend themselves.

      This is a serious matter of national governance and the use of national resources. The staff of DBS are paid from the VAT collected by government, the tax payers money. They are not paid to promote government ministers and the DLP government. This conduct is not only unfair but unlawful. Our courts in the OECS have already pronounced themselves on this issue. We cannot have fair elections in such an environment. This is misuse of public resources. Something must be done about that.

      At least DBS reported something, what about Kairi. In time to come, Labor Supporters will want to criticise DNO and Q95 for the overwhelming support they are receiving from the Business Community as regards to advertisements. For instance, haven’t you observed every important news item coming from Government, must go to DBS, Kairi and (another website) first. I hope Kairi and DBS will tell the people of Dominica that it is because certain people that are featured on DNO and especially Q95 prominently, they don’t like and as a result they will do anything to hide information from them. According to a saying in Dominica, it is a blatant case of wanting to cut your nose to spite your face.

      • ROSEAU VALLEY
        September 2, 2013

        I know that Kairi acted in like manner. However, be careful. Kairi is a privately owned radio station, albeit controlled by the government.

        DBS is a statutory body of the government, a creature of law created and to be managed in accordance with an act of Parliament.

        Dominicans, all of us- not just Laourites own DBS. We do not own Kairi. Crazy T could do whatever he wants with his station but NOT DBS- the national station.

    If the biggest indictment against the candidature of Mr. Lennox Linton for the post of opposition party leader is that he “doh even have a degree,” then we may be on our way to becoming a nation of hypocrites.

    Reviewing the news, on April 18, 2013, our Dear Leader, reacting to the election of His Excellency Nicholas Maduro, President of one of our closest allies and custodian of our beloved ALBA and Petro Caribe was quoted as saying that his election was “well deserved.” He was further quoted, “I have worked very closely with you over the past four years and I am fully aware of the vast knowledge and skills that you bring to the region at this critical period in our development. Now, a cursory glance at His Excellency Maduro’s online bio shows that he does not have a college degree. He was a bus driver for many years and entered politics as an unofficial trade union representative for bus drivers.

    Fast forward to September 1, 2013. Our Dear leader responding to the the appointment of Mr. Linton described it as ” an insult to other competent, qualified and other hard working ….” Compare and contrast my fellow Dominicans…

    Further afield, John Major, the man who succeeded the “Iron lady” Margaret Thatcher as British Prime Minister’s online bio also available online shows that he does not have a college degree. He left school at 16 with 3 O’levels – History, English Language and English Literature. He applied to be a bus driver but was beaten by another candidate. Along the way to becoming Prime Minister he also served as Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer.

    A college degree does not a political leader or Prime Minister make. The hullabaloo about a college degree is moot. Let the campaign begin! I am getting my short pants and my sunglasses ready.

    Congratulations Mr. Linton on your well deserved appointment to Party Leader.

      Want to talk about hypocracy??? I am certain were it the DLP who had elected someone like Lennox (uneducated and arrogant)to their leadership on Sunday the likes of you would be singing a totally different tune!! I didn’t hear people like you shout out so loudly about the treatment which the late PM Pierre Charles received from your Blue Party because he didn’t have a degree (even if he was more qualified than Lennox having completed high school with several subjects). NOW THAT’S HYPOCRACY!!!!!!!!!

        September 2, 2013

        @Anonymous, did I hear you properly? Did you make mention of the treatment late PM Pierre Charles received from UWP? Are you serious my fellow Dominican? Did you listen to SC the morning Piero died? Did you hear when he said that Pierro constantly told him that it was not what the opposition said but his fellow cabinet members said and did?
        If you refer to that as hypocrisy, then you have to be married to real hypocrisy, because here you are rooting for the same person that completely demoralized and chastised my good friend and late PM Pierre Charles because he did not think Pierro was qualified enough to lead him. It is no surprise that this same person referred to the nomination of Lenox as “Backward” and “inappropriate.” FYI, I was a pillar of the DLP but because of the manner that same individual treated my late hero Rosie Douglas, who by the way was very qualified and then Pierre Charles, I ran away from his poison. Since you are still there trying to defend that same DLP and individual you have confirmed to the world that you are the greatest hypocrite in Dominica.

      Papa Bondie, People will think we cannot understand the Queen’s English. Or are we so determined already to spin the truth? Was there anyone who ridiculed a former Prime Minister for not having a degree or higher education? If so, then who? And if you cannot see that, that is you because others can. That in itself would in any other society be a cause for disqualification and not what you are trying to spin. It is the thing called boomerang. But of course, if no one said that – or ridiculed nobody, then it is just a big mistake. But if True it is a Very big problem.

This is not a joke, the people want to see a change but not a change for the worst so don’t come up with the same old promising thing and expect the people to bite. UWP must realize that the labour party is not broken, it’s only cracked so they do not need to be fixed, just minor repairs needed and they will be back up there, so don’t stand there playing politics and expect to win. It won’t be an easy road if you all want to have a chance, so buckle up.

    September 2, 2013

    All the UWP needs is 11 seats. The UWP worked hard with that number before – we can do it again. We do not want nor are we interested in a no-opposition parliament of 21 seats as the DLP desires. However, if that is the wish of the people at this juncture we welcome it. We welcome opposition. We understand that we alone do not have all the answers and everyone of us must contribute, including the highly qualified experts of the DLP.

    We have no fear. We have put on the SHOE and are sure with the SAW in HAND- united we are moving ahead in victory. Change is a must not an option for us.

    September 2, 2013

    We are just wondering whether the UWP could not force the hand of the DLP into calling general elections by forcing a bye -election in Marigot and Roseau Central?

    What if both Edison and Prevost were to resign as members of Parliament today, would this force Madam Speaker to call for a bye -election within the next few months?

    Would the DLP allow the UWP to have a mini-election and take control of the election process?

    Furthermore, what is one of the existing UWP senators were to resign and Lennox were to be appointed a Senator, do you think Skerrit and the worse Speaker would ever reconvene parliament before the next elections?

    Just thinking aloud! Interesting!

  70. ROSEAU VALLEY
    September 2, 2013

    It is understandable that the events of Sunday,1 September 2013 was about the new leadership of the UWP. However, ROSEAU VALLEY must share his delight in the manner in which the Hon. Edison James has conducted himself and in particular his statesman-like speech at the Delegates Conference. Not enough attention is given to the well prepared and delivered departing speech of the Hon Edison James.

    We note with increasing concern that the UWP still does not yet have a dynamic, strong and powerful candidate in the Roseau Valley, who can successfully challenge and defeat Dr, Mac for that seat, which obviously gives him and the DLP great comfort .

    Much more than announcing 12 set candidates of the UWP, Mr. James said a lot more than DNO has highlighted.

    Hon Edison James delivered an address in his typical statesman-like manner with humor, honour, respect, humility, professionalism. He thanked all the founding members of the UWP (not including Julie), the delegates and the huge crowd at the convention for giving him the opportunity to serve. He thanked his family for his imposition on their tolerance over the years.

    Mr. James gave a short report card of the numerous achievements of the UWP under his stewardship and cautioned the new leadership to be vigilant but brave in serving the people of Dominica. He stressed that the UWP achieved a lot in just four short years
    -created the World Creole Music festival;
    – established the free text book programme
    – Established World heritage sites;
    – Mobilized funds for revitalization of the agricultural sector;
    – Created hundreds of jobs;
    – Revitalized the National Youth Council;
    – Passed a modern Education Act;
    – Developed the Financial Sector;
    – Began the mobilization for a new International Airport in Dominica etc

    The former leader explored the issue of how the change that he envisions should be effected by calling on the new leadership to;
    – become more engaged with the people, learn more from the people, stand for and with the people and share the plans, goals and visions of the Party with the people. He urged the leadership to always put the people first, listen to the people and ensure that the message is spread in a timely manner in the manifesto, which must be available in hard copy and online.
    – focus on implementing policies and plans for the development of the country and to leave the attacks, vilification and vulgarity to the PROs and political advisors, while focusing on the hard work ahead.

    Mr. James indicated that the UWP will seek to ensure that when assistance is sought for the implementation of local projects, there is an appropriate mix of domestic and foreign workers on these projects. He gave the confidence to international partners that the UWP shall ensure accountability and transparency as a UWP government will revisit our governance structure, which will include the review of the electoral process. A UWP government will also introduce appropriate amendment to relevant legislation to ensure free and fair elections in Dominica and to ensure that a Prime Minister cannot serve for more than two consecutive terms in office.

    He cautioned the delegates to keep their eyes on the prize and ensure that when called to serve, they do so with integrity and collaboratively without allowing personal ambitions to determine their course of action. In so doing, they must place the good of the country and the organization that they serve in advancing the greater good. Mr. James also called for increased national debate on issues pertinent to national development.

    Mr. James served with class and dignity and today, as he bows out as Political Leader of the UWP, he demonstrated that he is a gentleman of class. Well done Mr. James.

    Now Mr. Linton, please give us a dynamic, powerful, inspirational, qualified, candidate in the Roseau Valley, who could challenge and defeat Dr. Mac-more so the DLP in the Valley. The Roseau Valley must be an integral part of the refreshing winds of change in Dominica. Reach out to Bing, Peter, Ayoub and others who are willing to join the cause in the same way that we urge these potential candidates to come forward boldly and confidently to serve the people of the Valley without fear or favour and without waiting for an offer –monetary or otherwise from the UWP. Come ye forward sons and daughters of the Roseau Valley and serve in any capacity that your circumstances allow you to serve at this time.

    Respectfully
    Roseau Valley

        Be not afraid. Roseau Valley is doing all we can to return Dominica to a path of integrity and economic prosperity.

        It is not only by contesting general elections that we can contribute to the development of our beloved country.

        Different strokes for different folks. Sometimes in order for personal success to be translated into party and national success, the timing must be right. The stars must be well aligned sometimes, else the results of our human efforts could result in serious disaster. We caforce the hands of the universe.

      We welcome Dr. Fontaine and everyone who believes that he/she has a contribution to make. But we recognize that each member is endowed with a different set of skills and talents and everyone can contribute to the task ahead of us based on his/her set of skills and talents.

      At this juncture, Dr. Fontaine is an excellent candidate and he will win his seat.

      In any event, has anyone heard Dr. Fontaine express any desire to be Political leader? I don’t think I have. The gentleman simply wants to serve his people and take it from there.
