Urban Baron making a comeback

Baron is setting eye on the Petite Savanne consituency
Baron is aiming to contest the Petite Savanne consituency for the UWP

He is back…or is he?

Well, Urban Baron, the veteran politician who was a thorn in the flesh of the United Workers Party (UWP) and the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) and who left the political arena in 2009 after serving the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), is making a come back into the political fray.

But wait…he will be on another train.

Yes that is correct, Baron will be making a come back but this time he is expected to run for the opposition UWP in the Petite Savanne constituency against the Dr. Kenneth Darroux.

Upon departing the political arena in 2009, Baron was very critical of the Roosevelt Skerrit-led administration and held several meetings during the campaign chastising Skerrit and labeling him as “a dictator”.

Much talk has been going around concerning Baron who has publicly endorsed the UWP and been on its political platform.

Speaking to DNO in an exclusive interview, Baron confirmed that he and Giesel Francis, a former Miss Dominica, are the two persons who are expected to face the various constituency association branches when they meet on Friday February 21, 2014 in Petite Savanne.

“We are in the process of putting all that together…the organizing Committee from the various hamlets in the constituency has been formed and they will meet to vote for Giesel or myself as to who is the best person to run for the UWP in that constituency,” Baron told DNO.

He said that he has been “on the ground” and doing the necessary work and “campaigning for the change that is to come.”

“I can tell you it’s an easy process …90 percent of the people in the constituency say I am the best person,” he said. “However, it’s all in the hands of the people who will make the final determination.”

Former Miss Dominica, Giesel Francis is seeking to contest Petite Savanne for the UWP.

Francis on the other hand, described herself as “a people’s person” and said she is ready for the challenge if she is chosen by the people.

“I have always indicated an interest in serving my community and since I have been asked by them, I have discussed it with my family and is ready for the task ahead,” she told DNO.

She said she has a lot to bring to Petite Savanne and she is willing to work with whomever the people choose for the benefit of the constituency.

“The people have stated that they don’t want a one man/woman show … that area has been suffering from poor representation,” she remarked. “Baron and myself are team players and we are prepared to work together to move the constituency. So whoever wins the vote to represent the people I will work with them in that regard.”

Although both of them are potentially good candidates, I would give Giselle the nod because we need a mix of good women and men to represent the UWP.

It’s hard to find a woman putting herself up for political office so when one does, she should be encouraged. She is well educated and is already a public figure and knows what it is to represent her village and country.

Baron is a seasoned political campaigner and knows the opponents tricks and tactics. He has served two consecutive terms in office as the MP for the constituency and I think he should give Gisele the opportunity to represent her people at that level. He should be her mentor and guide.

At the end, it’s up to the people to decide who they want to represent them and I know that the officials of the UWP will give the people who they want. As with the other constituencies, the process to choose a candidate will take normal process and whoever gets the nod, I just hope the other will give their full support to the chosen one.

I see her making a good Minister of Youth Affairs and Culture.

Have you read (below) INSPIRED LABOUR DEAL ?
It seems that things getting poetic and my comment under that caption in support of that NC version of this new Skerrit/DlP song was not published by DNO. I guess some staffers are getting too deep into the licks of politics. Publish comments that are nt in bad taste or defamatory. My friend Baron has a right to change his political position and allegiance he is a Dominican. I don’t support his party but we are still friends. Giselle is bright young qualified and I do belive that labour is still excessively strong in T Savanne and the entire south. Let the people decide who is best Giselle or Baron. Some comments from the blues are not doing their party any good. The problem with some UWP people they are to quick to jump to conclusions without thinking. Don’t use DNO to destroy your party. Labourites don’t do so at all. WE are all Da people.

the truth will reveal skerrit is not a patriot and urban baron will bring that to light dominican must forget the party and all dominican must get register to vote once you eighteen years or over and when the election is call we all should vote for the united workers party to get rid of this corrupt government with a dictator as leader in the name of skerrit change is a must get them out and save dominica

Did you call the labour government corrupt? Uwp has led us to believe that they are running on a platform of good government and transparency. Today we have a case where one of their candidates is caught in a web of lies yet they refuse to deal with the situation and take appropriate action. What are your views on that grand bay again? Should your party not lead by example? When your party start showing example then you can come on dno and accuse people. We have facts to back up our claims about your prospective finance minister. Have you any facts to back up your claims? Your party have lost every case they have taken against the labour party so get your facts straight. You all have no credibility.

So what is the big deal of Urban coming back.It seems to me that UWP supporters have very convenient memory. They are not questioning Mr Baron flip flopping.Mr Baron should step down and give Giesel Francis a chance to start her Political career but this is just my opinion, it is the people of Petite Savanne to decide.

I have more to say to my people. you all saying oh we don’t know Giselle oh we don’t know Giselle , but all you also say Kenneth passing with his glass dark and up and he don’t stop to give you guys a ride or say hello yet, all you want to vote for him again .A lot of people in the consistency don’t known him, take Belview Chopin, Pichlen, my teenage nephews don’t know him, they are 15 and 16 etc. Each and every person don’t have to know her personally , It’s what she is capable of doing for the the benefit of each and every person she represents. Going to school with someone and not being friends or being from the same constituency is not the way to judge a persons capability to be a good representative. You guys think every one in America know Obama?you think Blcakmore know me ? but i did not vote for him base on that .You think those pastors in church know and cares about each and every person they preach too , yet we go to church and listen to them . You guys can still vote for labour because it’s all you culture. But when the suffering continues please suffer in silence ok.

So the man that UWP gave blows about not having ‘education’ is welcome on their train. Can you remember a few years ago when he was at the centre of controversy because he was considered’uneducated’ by the UWP…now …., he becomes qualified to run for office!!!! hahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahaha

  8. February 21, 2014

Urban Baron have always been a softie and will
never stand up to defend his own self far less represent his people. Anyman who will not allow himself to get dirty through the soil cannot lead. People this is just another joy ride taking on the constituents back (using the people to earn a salary). My dear people of Dominica where is your love for your country…switching someone every time an election is called is bad for development. Where are your voices to wake up and demand from the Parl Rep to take action on your behalf when action is not being taken ile representing you the members of the community? Hiring Urban Baron and Giselle Francis or Mr. Darroux is not the answer to your village woes. The problem liesvwith each and every member of rhat community.

As i sit there and read these comments , especially from the people of the Petite Savanne constituency , i am in great disbelief. I mean I am from that area and i cannot imagine how we think . I know everyone has the right to their opinion , but my God . The last time any real development happened in the area was when UWP was in office , i mean these people must be really blind or brained washed. I was raised as a Labourite ,my entire family has always voted Labour including me. I have not voted in the area , i have voted in the Mahaut constituency for Rayburn Blacmore , but this election i am going back to my birth constituency to vote for the UWP , this is dam nonsense with some people from that area , they just think that is only Labour no matter how bad they neglect that constituency, that is Labour alone that should contest and win that Dam constituency. We are no long in the stone age, we have to move onto the future ,not because our grand parents and parents always voted Labour ,when Mike and O.J was there, we have to remain in their times. we are better educated now so show it . Labour has not done anything up there . They always complain, oh we not getting this and we not getting that and still turn around and vote them. Wake up people .

I can expect that from Mr Baron. He is an old politician, who has a political axe to grind, but Miss francis, a young and intelligent person like yourself, I hope you are at least watching and questioning the actions of your party. They claim that they are running on a platform of truth, justice, god governance and transparency but their actions are beginning to show a pattern of lies and deceit and generally dirty politics. If you are preaching something you should practice it. your party has enlisted the assistance of a Dr Thomson Fontaine as their potential minister of finance. The man has a questionable past with regards to the handling of the finances of a private organization, of which he was the treasurer. this is something you must keep your eyes on and follow. Unless you just don’t care. There are two sides to every story. Do your own investigation, listen to both sides and judge. There is also the question of statements made by your party in the diaspora. Do you really think some of these statements are accurate? Or is it that anything is fair in war and politics? So then where does the fairness and righteousness and justice come about? In the case of the Thomson Fontaine tranfergate affair, where does good governance and transparency come about. Ms. Francis, this is your call. Let your conscience be your guide.

The UNITED WORKERS PARTY IS THAT GOVERNMENT and an MP under UWP government will surely be respected and the needs of Dominicans in all constituency identified

  20. Aye Dominique
    February 20, 2014

Lately I have remained mute because sometimes it is so hard reasoning with ignorant people. It is a very strenuous exercise for that matter and as one who does not have the patience and the courage, I just keep my mouth shut.

I think that in the kind of era we are living, there are an abundance of opportunities for self enlightenment, nonetheless people choose to remain ignorant and try to force you to get down to their level by spewing all kinds of garbage, and if you fail to engage with them at the gutter level then you are an alien from space, you are not one of them.

It is appalling that some members of the constituency are now disclaiming Giselle, but I remember clearly the very first time hearing of Giselle Francis, was when she was introduced to the rest of Dominica as the queen contestant from Bagatelle and more so when she won the contest she was the queen from Bagatelle. At that point, no one felt it was inappropriate for her to align herself with the area, the people of Bagatelle were happy that one of their own had contested and won the pageant.

Today she is back in a different capacity and all of a sudden people in the constituency do not recognize her. I believe that it is this very poor concept of politics that has contributed to the poor governance of our beloved country. Politics is not about sitting in a rum shop or on the road side. Politics is about effective representation of the issues which the Petite Savanne consitutency so desperately needs. As one who is closely associated with the area, I see the struggle on a daily basis. The fishermen are hopeless, unemploymemt is at an all time high, poor roads throughout the consitutency, poverty at an all time high. Aren’t these the issues that persons in the constituency should be concerned about?

The people in the area has a history of voting for nothing and being blind supporters of the DLP. It is also okay to be like that but please do not plant oranges and expect to harvest apples.

Giselle Francis does not have to be buddies or personal friends with the entire village to give the area the representation that it needs. If she is good enough to address the issues and bring relief in the areas mentioned then she would have done an exemplary job.

Politics is not about friendship, Skerrit clearly said so when he went behind Pierro back to negotiate with the Chinese. Politics is about interest, and you need the right person in parliament to represent your interest. People of the Petite Savanne constituency need to wake up from that political trance they are in currently.

The Giselle/Urban saga only came to light now. Neither Giselle nor Urban was in the runnings, their names only came up thanks to Cecil Shillingford who castigate Lennox Linton based on he Lennox’s utterances and made it VERY CLEAR to Lennox that he would not run.

Shillingford is a principled individual with very strong christian principles. I love this guy but he won’t marry me but he is a good man. He is the only genuine UWP allegedly candidate I have known. I support UWP and if Linton is transparent as he claims to be let him deny this blog. Let him say exactly why Cecil isn’t running.

  33. .PETITE SAVANNE VOTE
    February 20, 2014

I am a voter in the Petite Savanne constituency, and i hope that those in the heirarchy OF TEAM DOMINICA reads this blogg. In terms of representation it is shameful to say that we have a doctor representing us! Darroux does NOT know what he is, and i would not call him neither a politican nor a Parl Rep. Like Skerrit he thrives on the ignorance of the people. He gives the odd $100.00 and more to people, and maybe he thinks this is representation. It isn’t Darroux. You are cultivating poverty unto the people.
Now in terms of the two candidates, based on what i know, since i am one such voter, Jiselle maybe can articulate herself better, but in terms of the “””On the Ground Politics””” I do not know how she will do it, or how well she can do it. Urban is a well seasoned campaigner, you will blows him, but he come back at you harder, you will knock him out, he will stand and fire at you again. I am saying this to mean he can mobilize, and he can penetrate deep into this corrupt party support base OF THE CORRUPT GANG WHICH GOES BY THE NAME OF LABOUR PARTY. Rest assured that Baron was not one of the menmbers of this corrupt gang. He will not be bothered with their gutter politics, WHIC IS HOW SKERRIT CAN DEBATE.
I THINK THAT THE TWO CANDIDATES NEED TO SIT DOWN AND COME TO AN AGREEMENT AND ARRANGEMENT WHERE ONE THROWS HIS/HER SUPPORT TO THE OTHER.
We do not need a primary.
    LINTON
    FRANCIS

Ian has made the decision to protect his “personal interests”, rather than take a stand on principles. Mr Baron (or Giselle )
Your party claim that they are running on a platform of transparency and good governance. Please encourage your leadership to ask Mr fontaine to come clean about the DAAS money transfers. We are still waiting for answers. Among other things Mr Fontaine’s final financial statement for the DAAS organization does not add up. If he is going to run for public office he owes the people that much. I’m sure you all are people with class and integrity and would not want to be involved with an organization that does not emulate these qualities.

    • February 20, 2014

Dr.Fontaine is a private person just like you so he dont have to it’s all up to him but Skerrit is the person who should show his documents because he is a civil servant he is accountable to the public which is to you ask him to show he’s, so get your act together and think for yourself and then you can post smart comments, being a supporter of the DLP and Skerrit doesn’t mean you bow your head in the sand and pretend things are all good, what about a debate dont you believe a debate would do good for the country why dont you ask Skerrit. Skerrit knows he wouldnt because Dr.Fontaine will put up his your ppl just want to keep our ppl out of the seat

As a proud product of the constituency, Bagatelle to be exact, I am disappointed in Mr. Baron’s approach. As an individual one should set boundaries. If Mr. Baron is disenchanted with the current administration, then he should contest independently. Where are your morals and ethics Mr. Baron? This move only sheds bad light, it portrays you as a disgruntled individual with a personal agenda of vengeance rather than love for country. Awful shame!

If Urban Baron enter politics he will beat Dr Darroux hands down, if Gizel win, Darroux will win. It will be good for Urban to enter politics again, to get back at skerro and st jean for what they did to him, ironically darroux faced urban before and loss, the man is very popular in that community.

  60. Not Me Alone
    February 20, 2014

As for me, may the people of the constituency make the right decision. I like both of them as they both seem to have a very good team spirit and have both dedicated themselves to serve the party. I like Mr. Baron as a former cabinet member; on the flip side, I like Giesel because as a female I think she will add more balance to team Dominica when she joins with the one from St. Joseph. It is indeed a very good problem for team Dominica to have while DLP CANNOT attract anyone to replace the five Skerrit surely wanted to replace.

  61. Not Me Alone
    February 20, 2014

This is further proof of trouble in cabal camp of Roosevelt Skerrit, as they are once again not able to attract anyone of quality. Why would a bright, beautiful, very popular, intelligent young lady like Giesel Francis, a former Miss Dominica, choose to run for the opposition in a DLP stronghold instead of the incumbent which won 18/3 just five years ago? Does that not speak volume of what is really happening in Dominica today and why tells us why Mr. Skerrit is scared of calling an election?

I agree with OK, I sincerely hope that the people of Bagatelle, Bellevue Chopin, Pte, Savanne, Fond St.Jean, Fab, Maranatha Square etc make a choice for the future. This is very important for your future`s development.
Urban is a veteran, Giselle is new and up and coming a very educated, committed cultured young woman who is prepared to invest in her community by being in parliament. She is new, with little political experience and exposure but I have heard her on Q talking and presenting in many social issues…this for me is good in that she has begun using her skills to represent that constituency by highlighting passionately the social ills affecting her area.
Baron has been about, his job is to encourage Giselle, encourage her, guide her as we think bigger of the villages and people who need help and development.
Team Dominica is fresh, dynamic, sincere, new blood, that constituency deserves CHANGE…IT IS A MUST.
Those of you reading this and will be voting, vote wisely and look beyond but also capturing the resources and experience you have to guide the new and up and coming candidate, in Giselle Francis, she has potential….Baron we need you as this guardian, stalwart to guide us, we need Gisele in the House, not only to represent Bagatelle etc, but Dominica.

This is very interesting. Mr Baron represented the people for such a long time as a very strong Labourite, now he is thinking of going up on a UWP ticket? He should be shamed of himself. As for Giselle, the number of persons who do not know her and she always pretended to be better than her own people. She may be well educated and talented, but this does not compare to being in touch with your people. They all seek fame just when they are becoming forgetable. People think twice before you let these people blind you. DR. Darroux has been and will always be a man for the people. He has shown how well he can care for others by the way he looked after the people when he was the District doctor.

Is not that you can’t do the job , i just think that Ms Francis should get that chance to make that change , you sir don’t have a very good record in representing us in parliament in the past , though it may not be totally your fault , i know that you could make a difference in your representing us again if given the chance on a different ship , but i think that Ms Francis intellectual level is better suited to represent the future generation. I think that you should be her next of keen and guide her in the right direction be her mentor . Do the ground work. Use your experience to make sure that UWP does win that constituency. We want someone who can stand up to these bully’s, and knowing Ms Francis i know she can. We don’t want them saying it sour grapes , because that’s how it comes across, we want them to give the UWP the respect. But if you are chosen we will support you anyway. Good luck to both of you . Change is a must.

        Tell it to them again!

When a few WORKERS come on the media and talk bs they making the world think that majority of D/cans are UWP….

People must learn to understand is the people’s vote that counts and not how many pple dislike others comments and not how many of the same set of people on facebook bashing on the government…….

So when comes voting day and pple put who they want there pple must learn to respect that..

@HMMM, though the majority of Dominicans might not be UWP according to you, we do know that the majority of Dominicans are fed up about the way our passports are being sold to criminals; We are fed up with a PM that has gotton rich by night so much so he is believed to be the richest PM in the Caribbean, while the majority of us have been made poor, turned into beggars, cannot find employment and cannot plan our future. It’s because of these and more, many of us including myself have decided to put country first and will vote for a change. As a laborite in the past 3 elections this time team Dominica all the way

Ms francis has all the chance she need. She has an opportunity to tell the people why she will be better. you should vote on that. This is democracy at its best. Let the people decide. I wish them luck. I like the new direction of the UWP

More over, if the people are saying that they always had poor representation in pitite savane , was it not Urban Baron thet gave that kind of representation? Now, who said that his representation will be different when he change party??? It is the same man, therefore the representation will be the same,.don’t be fooled people. Urban Baron na go change..he was a lazy minister and lazy he will remain.

Gisele Francis: “… That area has been suffering from poor representation,” she remarked. “Baron and myself are team players and we are prepared to work together to move the constituency.”

Careful how you speak here, Ms. Francis. Even though you are part of a confused party, do not, yourself, appear so confused. Baron was parl rep for most of the past 13 years. If you claim that the ‘Ti Savanne constituency has been so poorly represented, you cannot in the next sentence hail Mr. Baron as someone who can, suddenly and inexplicably, “move the constituency.”

If the UWP and Miss Francis are so confused, you should, as your boss Skeritt would say, rubbish any notion that the UWP will win the Constituency. If I was you, I would not care a rat’s behind as to who the UWP sends to the Ti Savanne constituency far less to care whether they are confused or not.

DNO, i think that you forgot to let your readers know that Ms. Francis is also a broadcaster on Q95FM. Such information is critical for obvious reasons.

Bad Choice UWP! History has shown that recycled labour politicians have been a liability to the UWP. Your best deal would have been to get some fresh blood and have Urban Baron as their campaign manager of sorts. Bringing him back to the fore is an anticlimax to the recent impressive run of fresh candidates the uwp was able to sport. So Mr Linton whilst its early please review this knee-jerk decision. It makes you appear desperate.

Its time we get real representation and end this convenient representation that has been there for decades. Urban Baron failed to convince the people to vote for Sam Raphael at the last election so I doubt he will make a bit of a difference this time around. It high time we get solid representation. Nowadays its a luxury to reach retirement age so my advise to MR. BARON find a new hobby and live life.

DNO, Dominica Freedom Party is DFP. I have been misled by the face of Gizelle Francis, thought she was someone else who was on the media with MATT peltier yesterday February 19th. Still i agree change is absolutely neccessary in the a constituency that has followed labour but have not been rewarded with reciprocity. Even the Parl. Rep Darroux knows that, his strained relationship with the PM says it alllll!
