Linton addressing supporters on Thursday

Supporters of the United Workers Party have been told that the opposition will be attending parliament and is prepared to debate the supplementary estimates of over EC$50-million.

However, the party remains unhappy that its members will be unable to ask questions during the sitting.

The leader of the Opposition, Lennox Linton, addressed party supporters at the Peebles Park on Thursday 26th November 2015, just before Parliament got underway.

The Opposition and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alix Boyd Knights are at loggerheads over questions that the Opposition submitted for today’s sitting that were pushed to the next sitting of parliament.

According to the Opposition, this is the second consecutive time they have been barred from asking questions by House Speaker Alix Boyd-Knights, but in response, she argued that she is only obeying the Standing Orders of Parliament.

“Let me be clear, we are going to the parliament this morning to do your business,” Linton said. “We may not be able to ask the questions that we proposed to ask, but we are going to be able to debate the supplementary estimates where they are seeking final parliamentary approval for overspending and underfunded capital budgets, they are going to seek the authorization to overspend it because we have overspent it by over $50 million. So we have a lot of things to talk about.”

Linton also said his team is “tired” of being pushed around in the country’s parliament.

“But let me tell you something, we are getting sick and tired of being pushed around as your representatives in the parliament,” he stated. “We are going to parliament this morning, not to do our personal business, but to do the business of the nation of Dominica. The rules of parliament provide that we in the course of doing your work as your representatives in parliament, will be able to ask questions of ministers of government about the way in which they are running your affairs, the affairs of the nation-state of Dominica.”

He said in all parliamentary sittings in the history of Dominica’s independence, opposition candidates have been able to put forward questions for the specific meeting of parliament to which they were invited.

He added that Dominica does not have a schedule of regular meetings of parliament like other countries in the region, hence the relevance of the questions may be lost when the next date is announced.

“It is totally and absolutely unacceptable that a Speaker, in collaboration with a Prime Minister, could be using rules in the House, the minimum requirement rules against the parliamentary opposition seeking to pursue its right to do the work of the people in parliament,” he remarked. “And that is why we have called you here this morning. That is why I, as leader of the parliamentary opposition, wanted to see people in my face and wanted to hear people respond when I say, ‘the worse speaker, the worse speaker, ever in this house.’ I wanted to be reminded that I am not alone and Pat Aaron and Peter Prosper were not alone in their observations in that calypso some years ago.”

Meantime UWP Senator, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, said the country’s democracy is under threat.

“Dominica’s democracy is under threat this morning and we are determined to stand up to a Speaker that is hell bent on ensuring that the questions that need to be put before the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Government are not asked,” he remarked. “But we will ask the questions when they throw us out of the House, we will go on the street corners because we believe that it is the time that the government listens to the people of Dominica.”

He thanked those gathered for coming and said despite the small numbers, the “hopes and the aspirations of the Dominican people rests upon the fact that we are here this morning, we are here to send a very strong message to this government of Dominica that we will not tolerate what they continue to do to our democracy.”

One of the questions that the Opposition said that they wanted to be asked has to do with how the government going to raise the EC$1.3-billion, needed for the reconstruction of the country following Erika and how given the allegations of the corruption that are swirling around Skerrit, his connection with Ng Lap Seng and how is he going to find the courage to face international leaders and ask them for assistance.

“The other day I was speaking to a dear loyal and dedicated Labourite comrade of mine and he was saying that he was worried that there might be violence in the Country — He said he feared for his wife and children and even a little for himself as these people may well drag the Country into a civil war. I laughed! I told him”,–@LabourOfLove November 26, 2015

I would like to take comfort in your response to your friend, but even if I can choose to die in Canada, I don’t want to; I want to live my last days in my homeland, where God has work for me to do–and I am sure His Will be done

But the situation with Lennox Linton and his comrades–just about a year that he was appointed as leader of the opposition– is quite bothersome. Those people have no conscience from where God feeds peace to His people; I am saying that those people are not of God–that is the scary thing! And not only that, the question is, when or how will that kind of conflict end?

    • November 26, 2015

Lennox is stirring up a CIVIL WAR in our country; he has been on this long before he became a parliamentary representative, what his supporters do not realize is that they will also be the victim of such actions–much more than us, the God fearing people in Dominica.

Question, question, question; why all the questions; why not ideas for the benefit of our country and her people of the future?

One think I know is that, there are two kinds of question–one is legitimate and the other is nothing but a gesture which is meant to provoke discord and disdain.

But there is consolation, that God will always have the victory; hence He will not allow His Authority to be defiled by proud, vile, evil, and wicked minds–He wants nothing to do with such people.

The humble will be exalted–that is why Lennox is so much against PM Skerrit; but whom God has blessed no man can curse–Lennox need to give up his attribute of jealousy before it completely destroys him.

Elizabeth, you are a very bad example of those who called themselves Christians, that is why church only of three people. Two sitting in front of you, and you the preacher.

You do not know what you are talking about: I consider Lennox to be an Investigator Reporter. As such he exposed the dishonesty of the from the prime minister down to the last crook in his cabinet. One who calls herself a Christian, should be happy that a Lennox Linton exists in Dominica, he is filled of integrity, we have yet to catch him in a lie.

You are talking nonsense about civil war, you worship people like Dominica\’s first known terrorist who instigated a civil war on the people in 1974, today he is playing President of Dominica, after he overthrew Patrick John. Be reminded he overthrew his own party, the Labor Party of which John was the first Prime Minister. You need to get out and find a job, or return to school and get an education, college ed; that is!

The other day I was speaking to a dear loyal and dedicated Labourite comrade of mine and he was saying that he was worried that there might be violence in the Country given the rhetoric that was coming from the Uneducated Wicked People and their brainwashed supporters. He said he feared for his wife and children and even a little for himself as these people may well drag the Country into a civil war. I laughed! I told him, “Comrade, don’t you see these idiots have been talking their rubbish for over a decade and are yet to even stand up for themselves in Parliament”? “Don’t you understand that the Uneducated Wicked People’s party is a bunch of loudmouth empty barrels that will never gain power in this blessed Labour Country of ours”? I said’ “look at how we crushed them in Salisbury, look how they ran like cockroaches back to their holes and licked their dirty wounds like dogs”. Then I whispered in his ear, “we are ready for them Comrade, and waiting”! He laughed…

The “Novice” it seems was one of those children in school who always had to show off how smart he is. The type of child who always raised his hands to answer questions prompting the Teacher to say: “little Novice, give someone else a chance to answer the question…you’re not the only student in the classroom”! The type that alienated the other children with his attitude of being too smart and mature to mingle with his peers. The type of student who, despite being smart, annoyed the hell out of his teachers with his constant need to prove his intelligence. He is certainly not a down to earth, grounded adult today. He still feels the need to be “the smart one” even in his own party. It is this same “smarty pants” attitude that has alienated him from the Dominican people…including his own supporters. The novice loves platforms rather than villages, shops, bars and street corners where the true sufferers reside and hang out. He is out of touch and too smart to see it!

One strong cultural trait of Dominicans, is submission to rulers. They lack
any strong cultural tradition of self-government. They are people who suffer injustice without rebellion. They knuckle under.
Compare this to English and Scottish culture, where over 1000 years witnesses a steady string of rebellions against high-handed rule. From the earliest times through the American Revolution and the South’s Second War for Independence, the American
descendants of English, Scottish, and Scotch Irish settlers would go to war defend their rights and maintain their social order. Even at the lowest local scale, as “Regulators” or “vigilantes” they would ready to maintain order and their rights at whatever cost, by their own hand. Their love of freedom was virtually genetic.

That sitting of Parliament was hastily scheduled to coincide with the same date the Commonwealth summit is being held in Malta.

Two possible reasons for the absence of Skerritt at that summit.

First: He fears embarrassment re. his stubbornness and egoistic behaviour, irrespective of most CARICOM and OECS countries’ public support for one candidate, Ronald Sanders, to represent the region. He doesn’t care two hoots about Caribbean unity. His actions speaks volumes. OECS leaders were dissapointed and felt stabbed in the back.

Second: At that Commonwealth Summit in Malta, the countries are expected to sign a communique in support of Guyana in its fight against the claims of Venezuela and its seeming recent aggression. He doesn’t want to be part of that news release.

So Skerritt call Parliament meeting. Is by coincidence or ducking the Commonwealth meeting?

No questions to be asked. No answers to be given. Dominicans waiting anxiously for answers…

When we think of the effects the call to “Get rid of UWP at all cost ” had upon Dominica and will continue to have on us for the next 50 years, regardless of who is in power, the question that we all must answer is, was it worth it? Was it worth getting rid of Eddo and UWP at all cost Dominicans?

We sowed mischief and we are now reaping mischief in abundance. As a strong supporter of the DFP for their first 15 years in office, when I realized we were going in the wrong direction and decided to support UWP, I constantly have to ask myself why we did this to Dominica? Why enemies had to get involved in an unholy and unloving marriage, just to get rid of UWP.

Where is Rosie today? Where is Pierro? Where is Mamo? Where is the DFP? Where is the true DLP of Leblanc? They are all dead and will never come back. On the other hand, where is Dominica? Still here but 10 times worse off than in 2000. Where is UWP? Still here and we depending on them to deliver us from Skerrit. Was it worth…

    November 26, 2015

As I look at the mess that Dominica found itself in today, I cannot help but go back to 2000, when Dominicans responded to the call of Mamo, to get rid of UWP at all cost. We blindly yielded to that call without thinking of how it would affect us later.

To make that call effective, Freedomites that hated labor to death, laborites that hated DFP and Savarin to death, and laborites who could not stand a bone in Rosie Douglas, decided to come together just to get rid of Eddo. But what Eddo and UWP did to Dominica is the question yet to be answered.

Rosie became PM, but died within a year; Piero, his deputy died before their first term, only to sell Dominica over to Skerrit. I applaud the likes of Arthie and others for their courage, but they too need to bite themselves for joing with their enemies just to get rid of Eddo.

As a result of our mischief, not only is Dominica in trouble, but it is responsible for the death of the once powerful DFP that served us well

I am happy the opposition took the decision to go to parliament to do the business of the people. Staying out is exactly what Skerrit and the speaker want so they could continue to keep the nations business as their secret.

Dominica is in a serious crisis and unless all of us, whether red, blue or green, decide to come together to rescue our country from the wicked oppressor, who has oppressed all of us for many years now, we will not have a Dominica to pass unto our children.

I am also disappointed with the amount of persons that turned out for the protest because it also confirms that while all are affected by the policies of Skerrit, the majority feel it is the opposition that must set them free while they do nothing to help the cause..

Having said that, I also feel the opposition needs to rethink their strategy. They should have spent the last 7 days keeping public meetings at key locations to sensitize people, which would help get them fired up for action today.

If I were in you all position, I would find a way to bring question, eSkerritSkerrit refuses to answer.Example I would likeSkerrit to tell us wwhat is it that he was signing in Macau on August .

Do you really want us to sympathize with you when you and your followers are blatantly disrespecting Mrs. Knight ! Are your really expressing your dissatisfaction against the speaker by calling her a penguin? You ego and despicable behavior is appalling. Your sunglasses isn’t quite appropriate .
