The United Workers Party (UWP) said it will ask President of the United States of America Barack Obama to help improve governance and restore democracy in Dominica.
At a UWP public meeting at Lagoon Monday night, Roseau Central MP Norris Prevost read out the draft letter which he plans to circulate and gain support for.
“On behalf of the people of the Roseau Central constituency whom I represent, on behalf of the citizens of Dominica, on behalf of the leaders of the United Workers Party, we are asking your help to restore and improve governance and transparency in our lovely Dominica,” Prevost read.
He will ask his constituents and other Dominicans to write their signatures in support of the letter to Obama.
“The fight for democracy is in your hands,” he told the gathering in Lagoon.
Prevost said his letter follows statement by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that America is willing to partner with leaders looking to improve transparency in their territories.
President Obama has enough to worry about. The last thing he needs is to be concerned about what is occurring in Dominica, if it is not a war and Dominica is not attacked by invaders. Well, he may pass on the information to his secretary of state or other but do not count on that.
I am a young supporter of the UWP but when you dont agree with something or against something you should speak out.. I am totally against them writing to the President of the United States. I mean.. Come on. Thats going way too far. If you guys fighting for democracy fight for it in Dominica or in the Caribbean not in the outside whole. So I would like you guys to sit an rethink and make a better decision..

1. Is it the Ronald Reqgan model as practised in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, where death squads, disappearance and torture was the order of yhe day?

IF this letter is ever written and sent. IF Pr. Obama ever gets to hear about it. IF he was to take it serious, then surely he would instruct his aides to arrange a conference call to Pm Skerrit to discuss the matter.
Once Pm Skerrit explains who the writer is and Pm Skerrit explains that he knows about the letter and what he thinks are the motives behind the letter, once they have had a good laugh, then Pr Obama will get his aides to file it the BIN file.

Charles Savarin was just talking about a “rapid response” police unit for crime – aside from the fact that this idea is stupid because rapid response police units are used in situations of unrest, like riots, why don’t you guys put together a list of the things you believe are sorely needed to be done in Dominica AND your ideas, CONCRETE IDEAS, as to how you can bring about the solutions. Don’t just come up with the same ole talk about ” we should do this and we should do that and UWP can solve this and UWP can solve that” – you need to tell the people HOW you intend to tackle the problems; HOW it would be different than how the government is doing it now, and why your ideas are better – concrete ideas and solutions for everyday problems. By the way, I was in DA a few months ago and I love my homeland. I am worried that ignorance like that displayed here will negatively impact many of us who plan to come home. As much as we love our country and think there is no better place, those who have done some traveling are realizing that there are many destinations that afford more happiness than Dominica. Sometimes I really wonder what my fellow Dominicans are thinking. I would like to really know what is the real meaning of Democracy. He went up for elections. He won his seat, sat out the house meeting for two consecutive times and on the third meeting he took his oath and then walked out the house. What more democracy there is.

I think Dominicans should create their own petition and send it to the President of Dominica to replace the UWP as the opposition. We in Dominica need a strong and credible opposition as an alternative to government who can create a balance to governance in Dominica.
