UWP postpones Layou meeting

The UWP had intended to meet at the failed Layou River Hotel Project

A meeting organized by the United Workers Party (UWP) on Thursday (today) at the failed Layou River Hotel has been postponed to next week Thursday.

Political leader of the UWP, Lennox Linton, said on Thursday morning that the meeting was postponed in light of comments made by Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, at a Dominica Labour Party (DLP) public meeting in St. Joseph, which Linton said created ‘a state of unsettlement.’

“In the circumstances, the event we had planned for Layou this afternoon and this evening, we are postponing that to next week Thursday, ” he said on privately-owned Q95’s The Hot Seat on Thursday morning.

Linton had called on his supporters to meet with him at Layou on Thursday afternoon to dialogue on issues surrounding the much talked about Layou River Economic Citizenship program and the Layou River Hotel project.

At the public meeting on Tuesday evening, Skerrit told his supporters, “it is fight back time” against critics and detractors, including members of the UWP.

He also referred to the opposition as ‘traitors’ and told supporters to so name them wherever they are seen.

“I say to you they are traitors. I view them as traitors and I want you to do the same as well. When you see them on the streets, in the supermarket, at a funeral, on a plane or even in their cars, shout out to every single one of them – traitor,” Skerrit said.

Linton said the planned meeting was being called off because of the state of unsettlement Skerrit’s statements had created and the nation needs to pause and reflect on what was said.

“We are doing this because we believe it is important for the nation to reflect carefully on what the Prime Minister has said and for the nation to come to an agreement that there is no obligation on anybody in Dominica, especially on supporters of the DLP to follow bad advice given by the Prime Minister which has the potential of plunging us into a state of uneccasary tension and anxiety,” he pointed out.

He said Skerrit knows it is the Carnival season and he is effectively setting up his supporters “to go out and provoke and harass” the leadership and members the UWP and any type of confrontation is not going to be good.

“We need a peace loving atmosphere especially going into the Carnival weekend,” Linton stated. “We’ve seen some of the things that have happened when people lose control, when people make errors of judgement and so on and we are encouraging the nation of Dominica not to allow the comments, the statements, the order issued by the Prime Minister to negatively influence their actions especially on the Carnival weekend that could cause any strife, violence, confrontation because that is what it is set up to do.”

Linton also called on Dominicans to ignore the Prime Minister’s statements.

Linton: I hope the dialogue your planning to lead your sheep too is a positive one, like you found an investor that’s willing to apply for Citizen by Investment Program “selling pass port” to rebuild the Layou River Hotel and contribute something positive to Dominica as a leader. This would be really nice for once instead of begging your people for money, you should be creating money for them. Stop tarnishing Dominica reputation, stop conspiring against Dominica this is why your label a TRAITOR now your acting victim. please!

DNO. This pic is misleading. That set of buildings were flooded and partially destroyed by the Matthieu Floods of 2011. The failed “5-Star Hotel” is further up the Layou Valley Road.

Wise move for the wrong reason. Cant believe that the UWP would want to have a public meeting in a place that is definitely structurally unsound and therefore an unsafe environment.

  7. “We need a peace loving atmosphere especially going into the Carnival weekend,” Linton stated–News Article

This is such words of hypocrisy; it is unbelievable! Linton if anyone is provoking unrest in Dominica it is you and your counterparts–you do that everyday!

Every time you come out to speak you are provoking some sort of strife and discord among our people. I read from other sources, and so I know that your supporters would welcome a revolution against PM Skerrit and his men and women of Government, don’t come blaming it on him now;-with your lament of hypocrisy.

That is your way of plaguing the minds of the younger generation with nothing but futility. :

Linton should look into hiring and building some serious security around him.I will personally volunteer for free.Guys who are well trained in protecting high value targets.I can foresee someone being directed to take him out at all costs.Remember Gon Emmanuel. That threat issued by the pm is very serious and broad.Perfect excuse for the criminals to comit crimes and as a result put the police in harms way uselessly.Just smh.Really pm?Blackmore you need to stand up.You have the backing of every decent Dominican on such an issue. You being an ex cop know the potential danger of such reckless statement. You are a decent guy.Mr. Min. You really wanted a fight.Do you think that they would just sit by while being harassed and do nothing? The pm is trying to use the police force political clout.I hope the cops are smart enough to stand up and use common sense.Imagine the chaos that statement could cause.Only intelligent men make such decisions. Its for the safety of both parties. In light of those statements it’s a brilliant move.Thats the type of leadership we need.If we all gave an eye for an eye we would all be blind.I guess you know who said that.We need peace and not war.

    Great decision Mr. Linton.

Foresight and calmness is what’s required in times like this sir. Let them call you coward and use it as a badge of honor because you have made the right decision. You never know what the instigated “traitor hunters” had in mind having been directed to insult and verbally abuse UWP supporters who are Dominicans just like them.I am awaiting the police action after the report is made.

I am still loss for words on such a reckless directive being given by a country’s leader in the modern world. Reminds me of Zimbabwe and Mr. Mougabe. Looks like we have a Mougabe in the making but you (LL) sir will never be treated in the way Mougabe supporters treated Morgan Tsanguri. Oh hell to the no, not on our watch.

after de bakanal heat is over we can get back to serious business.
    You smarter than skerrit.
Doh go and risk all you lives for de commissioner of police and attorney general blame it on de usual violence associated with carnival……you smarter than skerrit!!!!!!!
I notice de police playing like they deaf. If it was a member of UWP saying these things you would see how quick senior counsels would jump crying foul!!!!!!

  17. February 4, 2016

While many level-headed Labourites may not take the instructions of the Supreme Leader to provoke, harass or insult others seriously, there are a few misguided and hot-headed Labourites who actually will. The chances that a few trouble-makers might take the meeting at Layou as an opportunity to act on the Prime Minister’s orders is in fact quite possible. If, God forbid, there is a public meeting where the Leaders, Members and Supporters of the United Workers Party are gathered and a few Labourites decide to show up and disrupt the proceedings with taunts of “TRAITOR, TRAITOR TRAITOR” the situation may explode into chaos rather quickly! Even worse, if any violent confrontation EVER occurs between members of these opposing political parties it, without a shadow of a doubt, will spread throughout the Island. Every Dominican on Island knows that loyalists on both sides have been on edge for months if not years. We cannot afford a single spark to start that fire!!!

Linton needs to take he and his family to that site. It’s a wreck and inviting people to gather there for any reason is asinine. Gather on the bridge in Layou, block it! He cancelled it because only five people were going to show up. LOL…Linton can lead his UWP fools to do whatever he wants but as soon as the PM starts to defend himself and party, Linton is worried about it! Labourites aren’t dumb enough to fight UWP supporters – we’re too busy working and trying to rebuild the economy. On the other hand, UWP has full disposal of all the brain dead paros to do whatever mischief they want.

Here’s a business idea Linton. Go to the bank managers in Roseau and speak with them about loaning you enough money to buy the property down at Layou and begin reconstruction of the hotel. 26. My Take
    February 4, 2016

I fully understand the cancellation because although I am not a member or supporter of the opposition, I would be afraid to go anywhere UWP is gathered with that threat issued by the PM.

I am also concerned about the pM calling them Traitors and up to this point no one has been arrested for a serious crime as treason. If they are traitors, then the pM needs to spell out what secrets he shared with them and they revealed to the enemy. If none then the Pm needs to arrested,

In light of everything, I am surprised that the president and deputy leader of uwp have said nothing, since they are both attorneys and members of the UWP. Their silence sends a very negative signal to me.
I am not political and non align. I just speak my mind

Linton ……., you just dont have understanding ” this is coming out from a youngster” there are several meaning to this statement “fight back” but you are the only who understood it as fighting back because that what your intention is about JUST VIOLENCE, why would that be the first ting you jump on, and if the cap fits you when the Prime Minister said you Guys are Traitors, WELL you Guys are Really are TRAITORS!!!!!!

    • mastiff
      February 4, 2016

He heard fight back and immediately misconstrued it to be violence, trying to (once again) instigate an international media firestorm. When will Linton realize that the international media is done listening to their crap. No one takes them seriously. If they were taken more seriously they would have half the country’s constituencies. LOL

@trusted one, did you read or listen to the part where Skerrit called them “traitors” and asked his misguided and blind supports to call the traitors whether they are seen on the streets, in their cars, in the supermarket, at a funeral, and on the plane? Are you all damn blind and ungodly to applaud this? We are in the carnival season and we all know how revelers usually choose this occasion to attack their oponents. Mr. Skerrit knew very well why he planned the meeting and he carnival was coming, and therefore he ordered his troops to action. As a Dominican I am very frightened by this call to provoke people, and shucked tha Skerrit has not been arrested. Only in Dominica such things happen

    • @TRUSTED ONE February 4, 2016

You have said it for me!

Linton walks around with that kind of strife and discord on his mind all day and all night–every time he comes out to speak, his message speaks some kind of unrest to our God fearing people in Dominica–now he is blaming it on PM Skerrit, as if he doesn’t have to be angry! Yes he does!

Before that meeting, Linton’s supporters were saying if PM Skerrit was not guilty why is he coming out to speak–so that means they have accused him of all sorts of wrong doings–which is not true!

Now he has spoken and they are trying to label him as a “terrorizer”–so why be afraid and to jump to conclusion if they were not guilty? This sounds a lot like the story of the foolish people; except that this group is more than three

@ real pussie, you really foolish! We’re you raised on goat milk?

    • @real possie February 4, 2016

Linton continues to play with the minds of his supporters, but they are too naïve to understand his games. He simply used that tactic to gain more on his side–but we are not as foolish as he thinks.

He is going to stay home and not attend the carnival festivities: he is cancelling meeting because of what PM says–but next Thursday; so what would be the difference between today and next week

To tell you the truth I thought he would declare “house arrest” against himself.

This is the way those guys continue to exaggerate about everything–speaking darkness about everything as the tarnish Dominica’s reputation.

Other terms for “traitor” is “conspirator” “spy” or “inside agent”.

Based on what I have read, it seems a lot that this is the work of Linton and his counterparts against PM Skerrit–and so he is the victim;, not Linton–what do the expect him to do?

Excellent move, Mr. Linton. That is what leadership is all about. Skeritt wants to jam you, you don’t jam he and his DLP supporters back, especially at that time of the year. I don’t blame you Mr. Linton. Safety first!!! Exercise it!!! After the outrageous statements that were dished out by our most holy law abiding citizen Lord Skeritt, one must proceed with great caution and protection. Let them go ahead and call you coward. The real coward is the king of instigating violence Mr. you know who. Sometimes I does really wonder if Skeritt have a brain in his head or if is some kind of pre-programed robot in disguise we have running the country. My poor brains cannot fathom how that man claiming he love the country. That hopeless look on his wife’s face the other night was making me feel like that even she is aware of his wrong doings and have lost faith in him but refuses to break their vows so she’ll support him no matter what the circumstances.
