UWP to present budget Tuesday

Linton said the economy is in "shambles"
Linton said the economy is in “shambles”

The United Workers Party (UWP) say it will present its own budget to the Dominican public next week.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday morning, Leader of the party Lennox Linton explained that the budget is being presented in an effort to make Dominicans aware of the party’s plans for the Dominican economy.

It will be presented at the Arawak House of Culture.

“The public can expect the United Workers Party perspective on a better Dominica,” he stated. “The public can expect to see what will happen in the first few years of our administration on the matter of making Dominica the best place to live, work and enjoy life.”

He added that this will be an important statement of economic strategy and policy as the UWP seeks to renew, rethink and rebuild the economy of Dominica which he said is in “shambles.”

“We have hit rock bottom, we have seen our major growth engines going down the tubes and we are saying that this government has had enough time to arrest the slide they have done nothing, things continue to get worst,” she said. “On Tuesday night we will show how things can begin to get better.”

Linton added that, although the opposition will receive the opportunity to respond to the Prime Minister’s budget presentation, this is a new initiative by the UWP.

“Things change and this is a time of change,” he stated. “We are a party with our own ideas about the economy of Dominica and this time around we are not going to be restricting ourselves to responding to what Mr Skerrit has to say. We will do that because that is a requirement of the Parliamentary process but in addition to that we will be presenting our own ideas on how we see this country moving forward from the budgetary cycle process and from the economic strategy point of view.”

In the meantime, Linton pointed out that the party will be hosting a public meeting on July 24th to discuss the way forward in achieving free and fair elections in Dominica.

“We have invited representatives of civil society organizations across Dominica to a consultative meeting on Thursday 24th July, 2014 at the Public Service Union from 4:30. On Thursday, 31st July,” he said. “We will host a town hall meeting at the same venue for the general public on the question on the threat to free and fair elections in Dominica.”

Linton noted that these engagements will focus on the way forward to safe guard our democracy following a careful examination of the key contributing factors to this worsening national crisis.

According to him these include but are not limited to the failure of the Independent Electoral Commission to deliver an accurate register of voters and identification cards for voting.

“I want to make it clear that the Electoral Commission is under no doubt as to what its fundamental responsibility is for free and fair elections,” Linton said. “You can read it on their website in terms of the responsibility for an accurate voter registration and you could read the same commitment on the Facebook page of the Electoral Commission.”

He pointed out further that although the commission is fully aware of its responsibility they continue to find ways to avoid doing that.

We are really Dummy in a can. Give Dominicans their PM Skerrit. Lennox and his team need to leave Dominicans in their Labour calamity.

Right now there is no hope for us based on the fact that our people are so small minded and love to depend on handouts from the government. Hence the reason we will continue to support labour.

I’m so discouraged by our people lack of intelligence to understand and make informed decisions based on the statistics that made available to us as well how our living conditions have changed significantly for the worst over the last 10 years.

God Bless us all in Dominica.

Lol is this a joke?? You’re going to present a budget high lightening your plans if you were to get into office right–but are you forgetting that to present a budget would mean that you need to have the before you the total amount of money sitting at the treasury, then you need to know what the full expenses are each month after which you can identify what can be done. so you’re about to do the same thing that you are accusing the current administration of–fooling us with what we want to hear… you got jokes…people seriously no one can present a budget if you do not know how much money you have to work with–think people think..

    July 18, 2014

I hope with the new budget you all will be able to state where the funds will be coming from to assist with your budget if you come in power…..Action speaks louder than words. Being the opposition it is very easy to say we will do this and we promise to fix the economy.. just to get the votes. Then when you all r the government it is certainly something different. Again I will say talk is cheap. And awaiting to hear where exactly you will be funding this money for your budget ..hope you wont empty the treasury and start off with loans.

These are real indicators of the D/can economy – it shows a rather constant pictures with some up / down but within the global context of the world wide financial / economic crises – D/ca seemed to have fared decently.

As for this being new – please – go to the seventies – the Freedom party did oral and written presentation every year in an out of parliament – and – not for the first time right before an election.

UWP has not been a responsible opposition. They have failed as an opposition party. This is a little bit too late to convince the serious among us to support them to form the next government. Freedomites need to come home and rebuild their party to include contesting seats – I am not saying we will win and become the government – but I do believe we can become the official parliamentary opposition.

If Freedom joined the 2015 race, DFP would may win, but we would till the ground, putting grit and the smell of earth in the contest – for our comrades. We would energize the Freedom Party’s base which would then stir up other none practicing Freedomites to come home from UWP and Labour.

      Good question Peace;

If by some miracle the UWP wins the next general election would the results be free and fair? And would they accept the results?

If they win, it is possible that they could have won by a wider margin. So what’s your point.

@test-tube Yes a comment like yours is indeed a joke.
I would like to commend the UWP on that. This is indeed smart thinking. As the soon to be GOVERNMENT, all eyes were on you all to do this . BARRING ILLNESS OR DEATH, I shall be there.
      HOW LONG?
      NOT LONG!

I like your style. You are a good manager, a hard worker, an honest man, a team player, punctual and exellent at time management.
As for me, I hehe and haha too much and need to take a serious page from your book and get out of petty business.. So far, I have dissociated myself from the liars and the tiffs which is a step in the right direction.

What time of day is the Budget meeting?

Agreed. He is truly a very hard working man. A disciplinarian, keeps to promises. Does not waste your time…when he tells you he is coming at nine, he might be there at 8. Visionary and Focused. My faith in him has grown by leaps and bounds. He is not afraid to speak the truth, which before God will set you free, But there are those who believe that the truth is not good especially when it comes to politics. But I say, hold on brother, hold strong.

Unheard of, as it’s the first in the history of our country for a party not in power to present a budget. We know change is really on the horizon for our country.

I’ll be looking at how it’s going to play out, and across the board for incentives to promote and lure investments so we can get our young people meaningful employment. And do not forget Grand Bay is desperately in need of a bridge across the Geneva river, just in case….

New Thinking? Mike Douglas did that a couple times in the 1980s when Freedom was in power. He presented his own budget, but he did it in the House, not in the street, where it is not official.
