UWP senator accuses gov’t of incompetence after Erika

Baptiste said the government has accelerated the country's problems
Baptiste said the government has accelerated the country’s problems

United Workers Party (UWP) Senator, Isaac Baptiste, has said Tropical Storm Erika severely devastated the island on August 27 because it was a natural disaster, but the “incompetence” of the Dominica Labour Party government has accelerated the problems the country currently faces.

Baptiste made that statement while addressing a Diaspora meeting held at the Prevost Cinemall in Roseau on Thursday.

According to him, unless the government changes its ways the country will continue to be faced with problems.

“The problems we are facing here, yes the natural disaster caused it, but to a great extent the incompetence of this government created the problem also largely…,” he said. “What we need is competent people running the administration and running the government of the day.”

He said land use planning issues, infrastructure and housing issues had to be addressed before the storm “and to show that the problems we are facing here did not arise as a result of Tropical Storm Erika it was existing and many of the problems were raised as a result of poor planning, bad decision making, incompetence of this present administration.”

He accused the government of not being serious when it comes to the proper management of the environment.

“Therefore even before Erika, two consecutive years we had natural disasters, we had the trough situation that affected badly the Mahaut area, we had another situation that affected the southern area… and now we have Erika,” Baptiste stated.

He noted further that when examined in terms of proper management of the environment, “the government is missing in action.”

“When you look at the damage to our bridges, our roads and so forth and you put into perspective the weakness and incompetence of the government in terms of administering the land use process you ask yourself, are they really ready? Do they have the ability to manage and supervise the reconstruction programme to the tune of $800-million which is what is estimated and will be required to reinstate our roads, bridges and so forth?” he queried.

Linton said Dominica is in a state of crisis
Linton said Dominica is in a state of crisis

Meantime, UWP Leader Lennox Linton said the state of the nation is one of crisis.

“Crisis because all of the key indicators of performance, whether you are talking about our social services in terms of healthcare and education, the indicators are pointing the wrong direction…” he remarked. “When we talk about the state of the nation in October 2015 we speak regrettably about a nation that is lacking the leadership potential that it deserves.”

Linton noted that has been going on for quite some time.

“Regrettably the people of Dominica seem powerless or incapable of doing anything about it,” he said.

These few words by Mr. Baptiste and Mr. Linton has no substance. Give us examples of what you are talking about and what could be done differently. come on and tell us, otherwise anyone could make these remarks but if you can provide the evidence and the alternatives than we would get somewhere. smh

The people don’t need UWP to tell them how ineffective this leadership is and has been. When citizens speak of the gross mismanagement across the country, they are threatened, bribed, or ridiculed. But the very same Labor ministers are telling on each other:

When the cruise ship tourists reported Dominica was last in almost every tourism category when compared to regional peers, the tourism minister says “yeah we already knew that”.

Now that PMH has come under excessive scrutiny, we are told “the medical professionals act was hanging around various offices”

When raising age of consent seemed to go nowhere, Blackmoore said he don’t know where the petition given to the PM was; it must have plum disappeared!

When Delices people start shouting SOS free us from the cage, suddenly minister of education telling us minister of public works not doing his job!

And minister of education tells on his self, smoking out teachers rather than developing them!

The only thing I see UWP is causing is DISCORD and DISUNITY among Dominicans. What about the two parties coming together putting all differences aside and work for the betterment of Dominica. I am also seeking help from Dominicans in the diaspora to create an account to pledge annual funds to Dominica and to direct our expertise to lift our country.

We tend to look at politics everyday blaming Skerritt, Blaming UWP and everyone else. Why can’t we come together? I thought ERIKA was doing just that. It takes time to assess all these damages. GOD BLESS DOMINICA.

      October 30, 2015

We can’t come together because we elected to live in a multi-party democracy, where the role of the official parliamentary opposition is to highlight the shortcomings and failures of the ruling party. This is one of the few areas of accountability left in the country. If you loved your country you would listen to what these folks are saying and demand better of those in power.

If the two parties were to come together, where would that leave citizens? You think we would actually be better off??? No my friend, we would then be blinded to all the theft, negligence, and victimization that is taking place in the country. We would continue living in one of the worst performing islands in the region, without any clue as to why that is. At least right now we can see clearly it is because of the corruption, incompetence, and mismanagement taking place by the ruling party.

If the damages to dominica by erica is the incompetent planning by this government, what he is saying that planning started in 2000 thousand when the dlp came into power.so what was he doing as head of planing devision long before the dlp came into government, eating tax payers money.why did he not advise uwp not to build the petit savanne ,délices link road, when british geo technicians and engineers advice the uwp not to build this road, why did he not advise sam raphael not to build jungle ba pon the back side of petit savanne.he as a top planner in the country knows that petit savanne region is one of the most unstable areas in Dominica suseptibale to earth movements (land slides).

If you stick to the point you will come to a better conclusion. There were no Ericka in Dominica, it was created self destruction. There was no wind. Try to understand. Only two things man cannot control .One is the almighty God, and the other is the Wind. There are three hundred and 65 Rivers and if you don’t control them they will control you.maintenance, maintenance and maintenance. Ericka just exposed the people in power. Again I say, notice the diversion in the town and yet no work is taking place, that means some outside company is taking over.Mr.. It is so easy to fool one of us. For example, the couple was talking against the DLP the other day, when one minister heard about it, he went to them and said, ” I will send 2 of your kids to study overseas if you come on our side and stop criticizing DLP.” Right away they forgot all the bad DLP was doing and aligned themselves with the DLP!
My point is that the parents did not take their own kids long term future into consideration, because they did not realize that the DLP is not creating any jobs in Da for the courses that their kids went to study for.
This is what Dominicans have look at, don’t cut your nose to spite your face.

    October 30, 2015

There is no water in Colihaut and Bioche, no passage to Delices and so many roads and bridges are yet to be looked at much less to be worked on and yet some people are still giving Mr. Baptiste a hard time for his honest words? Ministers themselves are saying that they are fed-up with the slow pace.
When will we Dominicans put petty politics aside and face the truth? I know that most of us voted for DLP , but e have to come to terms with their lack of ideas on how to develop the country.
Thus far we have received more than US$10. million and you mean to tell me the DLP can’t activate emergency mode to have things seemingly back to normal in the affected areas?
Dominicans it is time to take your country back !

Regrettably the people of Dominica seem powerless or incapable of doing anything about it,” he said<<<News Article

Lennox Linton, when are you people going to stop with doom and gloom against our Dominica. You continue to sound like a broken record–it is sickening!

You need to stop, to reminisce, to come to terms with the fact that you are a "leader" of the
"minority" ; and if you want to be that of the "majority", you need to lay out your card with a much, stronger and positive hand; instead of that weak, negative, and futile hand, which you present to us (the majority) on a day to day basis.

And that problem is not about you alone, in that group of yours; just read that essence–less presentation of what's his name above yours–how can we choose men like you and yours to replace our leaders of today?

This cannot, cannot, happen now; perhaps not even 5 years from now.

I’m sure that many people were confused when the started reading his statement. It just doesn’t make sense. Thank God UWP is NOT in Government. With him and Linton Dominica would be a laughing stalk! Always criticizing and blaming the government. Some people must find something to talk about to show they are working. You can’t keep quiet I suppose.

  15. Governance
    October 29, 2015

Yes, the Government has done little or anything about land Use. Mr Baptiste must also be fair and state the UWP Government did nothing about the situation either. Remember, the project to dig up Pond Casse? The UWP Govt was stopped in its tracts. Tell me what the UWP Govt did regards the environment and land use policies.

It is not about critising. Be fair. Mr Baptiste did not mention one proposal based on DNO’s reporting. If he did, then DNO should so report so I can be fair to the man.

I agree 100% with Mr. Baptist, except that there is too much talk and not enough action. This DLP administration is expired and we need to save our country ASAP. I mean Skerrit left the country on the 15th of October and said he would be out for ten days. Four days later and no one knows where he is while our island is in serious turmoil, some cause by Erika, most caused by the DLP, and on top of that, the man we hired to lead us out, has the national, regional, and international press questioning his actions and the involvement of Dominica in the corruption and bribery of arrests of NG, Ashe, Lorenzo, who were all in party mood with Skerrit two days before Erika destroyed us. It is not that the powerless, or incapable of resolving such issue, all they have to is vote Skerrit out. Near election time they go on a hype, talking as if they are going to end Skerrit’s rein.

The problem is greed for freeness: Skerrit has the nation wrapped around his fingers, so weeks prior to the election, he gives free house, free building materials, money and food to those who mesmerized by his kool-ade laced with decit!

He and his people are so cunning, they keep people dangling in such a way that they must return him to power. Sometimes, it may benefit some people if they write there opinions, read it more than once, to see if it makes sense. The quote above makes absolutely no sense coming from someone supposedly a Senator. You are talking nonsense by saying “Tropical Storm Erika was existing. That imply’s it was there all along even prior to the destruction of the country.

The way you are talking is as if someone knew there was a potential for disaster, and the administration was incompetent in making proper reservation to receive the storm. We know that Skerrit and his government are a bunch of waste of time incompetent people, but I believe the way you are talking this time is un-called-for. If you wish for your opinions to be regarded, make sense!

I am responding to this comment here, because I am also your victim, those of us you claim to be under you, in intelligence and academic education–except that we know better and you show it to us everyday.

Here is what Baptiste said: “He said land use planning issues— did not arise as a result of Tropical Storm Erika; it was existing and many of the problems were raised as a result of poor planning—”

There should be a semi-colon after Erika–which I added–, and the sentence that follows is poorly written, but an intelligent and academically educated person would be able to read and understand the message.

Instead you are loudly claiming that the man said Storm Erick was in existence, all along–who would be so foolish to say a thing like that–except you of course!

Zapatos boy, I give you a hard to too; but Elizabeth, slugs me every time she gets the opportunity, which cause me to fight back.

Sparrow sang a song the chorus goes like this “Fight Back……………..”

That little yellow bird twelve year old teacher promised to haunt me into my grave, so I guess even in my grave I will have to defend against her. Last time I was coming back to Los Angles from Canada where i eat her food, and drank her beer, at about three in the morning I ran into a Deer: I got suspicious she put something in either the beer or de food to work obeah on I kid eh!

I had not told her about that to this day eh, caus I doh want her to know how good a obeah woman she is man!

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahh!

You know how Dominica woman like to work obeah man; I think she working obeah on I boy oui!

No matter which side of the fence you are on, I think it is long overdue for parliamentarians to address the issue of low productivity. I am speaking purely from a lay man s standpoint as I have no background in economics and politics. Every time I hear politicians from either side talk about who is competent and who is not I wonder. It s time now to address your constituents all 21 of you and speak to the issue of people who want to work for a few hours yet expect the economy to be booming. When you have your constituentts understand this concept you will have no problem convincing them who is competent or in competent in government.

Lord have mercy, they are at it…again!!!! When will the Uneducated Wicked People realize and acknowledge that they are a minority in Dominica and, in most circles, are considered trouble-makers and traitors to their Country? Every patriotic Dominican at home and abroad has seen the great works and tireless efforts of this Blessed Dominica Labour Party Administration, spearheaded and led by none other than the charismatic, compassionate and Christ-like Supreme Leader, the right and honourable Dr. Roosevelt M. Skerrit. Dominicans in the Diaspora do not want to hear these negative comments about their most revered and beloved Prime Minister and his cabinet of capable and highly educated Ministers. Do remember that Dominicans abroad came home in droves to ensure that the blessed Dominica Labour Party remain in power and, for sure, will not hesitate to do so again in 2019-2020. The mere fact alone that the “Novice” reportedly admitted that UWP is powerless and incapable is proof.

Guy, I do not know you but I believe I am beginning to dislike you!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhhhh!

For this simply reason ” you too fool, eh” and that is straight out of the red clay mud in the village of Wesley in which I walked as a kid! You are so stupid you have decided to segregate the country, just because Skerrit won the election for the past fifteen years, that is not an indication that puppets like you and him are some majority.

His winning spree is not because he is accomplishing much for the nation, he won the last two elections by questionable means. It is illegal to bribe people to vote.

It is illegal to import expatriates who has been out of Dominica for all like sixty years, getting a free ride home simply to help reelect that Mountain Chicken Crapo Mentality boy Skerrit. Both of you are two yellow big Butt Crapo, Dominica can do without eh! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaah! You old crapo!

Linton, Dominicans are not powerless, they are afraid, stupid, dumb-founded and enamored by their PM to care about themselves and their children’s future to change. Alas, business is soooooooooo slow that I now have to seek emplpyment overseas.
Salaries in this country are the lowest in the entire Caribbean region. The standard of living is at the lowest I have ever witnessed with all my years living on island. All sectors are at a stand-still. The banana industry is completely ignored, Tourism is being severely mismanaged, no fault of Mr. Tonge (I think he was set up to fail). The hospital is now offering the lowest standard of service ever, and well we get promises of new hotels aynd villas to come which never materializes.
There is no accountability and transparency is just non-existent. I have had enough. Linton you are just crying in the wilderness for a people who put a Man above their needs. I love Dominica, but now I JUST HAVE TO GO. I HAD ENOUGH> GOODBYE DCA.

“Mr. Tonge (I think he was set up to fail).”

No, no, no; donot make any excuses for that man, they are all in that mess together, he knew what he was getting involved into when they all were involved in lying to the people, and giving them money and free food to get voted for.

Those who became ministers without being on the ballet are given ministries for the dirty work they did to help win the election.

Within five years, all of them will have a house valued at more than a million dollars, and some expensive BMW or some other expensive motor vehicle, while you have to go to some other island to crawl at someone feet for a job in order for you to survive!

I hope you did not vote for Skerrit, and now buys remorse is consuming your mind!

Wow that would be progress. 21 million dollar houses and 21 BMW. Next election all DLP have to do is to give the opposition members million dollar houses and bmw cars and will gain 21 seats. Telemacque you are in the wrong business. With all your Doctorates you can do better. I am going up as an independent next election so I can get those goodies from both parties.

Boy, I agree I am in the wrong business, but always remember the people who work hard and have less are much more comfortable than those who steal or get into cynical, and devious activities to get what they have. People who obtain wealth by stealing, continuously looks over their shoulders, not knowing when they will be caught and sent to jail!

Honest people does not have to worry about such fate! Personally, I do not feel comfortable accepting anything from anybody, Case and point, one of my grand sons father got gunned down last year, he left everything to my grandson his only child; among what he left is an expensive Cadillac, my grandson told me I can have it. I went to Corona, the kid and I got into it and drove it to my home in Los Angeles, by the time I got back to Corona, I told my grandson I cannot keep the car.

I felt very uncomfortable taking the car; reason I did not pay for it from my pocket! Never envy a politician in Dominica over what they have because it is not…

Dominicans do not need a UWP senator to tell them about the incompetence of the Skeritt Administration. Them fellers are bankrupt of ideas, but over flowing with corruption and lies. A calypsonian said it right when he said those fellers are inside out, outside in. According to Hon Lennox Linton them fellers don’t have a clue as to how to manage the country. I believe they should change their political name to the vie te vie Government.

I share your views Baptiste. Long before Erika I described them as a team of clowns. They are lazy, dunce, feckless, incompetent and to top it all, wicked. They are all groping in the dark!!!!!THE BROAD TENTACLES OF CORRUPTION,NEPOTISM AND CRONYISM have rendered Dominica a failed state.

let us use the energy and turn it into positives towards the development of the country, we as a people, we as a nation can do better than that! growing up in Dominica I always learn to always circle yourself around good people………….. UWP had it corrupted time in office and is asking to come back again, what will they do different this time? answer that question, and what will be all you new objectives for the country…….

The wicked useless party is clueless and will disappear like the Do You Peepee Freedoom party. This one term party is not going anywhere in a hurry. Just ask Telemaque, he has Doctorates in everything. He and Dr La Lie his mentor.
