UWP supports new gov’t presidential nominee but …

Opposition Leader Hector John
Opposition Leader Hector John

Opposition leader, Hector John, has made it clear that the United Workers Party (UWP) will support the government’s new nominee for president, Jennifer Wallace Lafond, on the condition that she meets Constitutional requirements.

He told local radio station Q95 on Thursday morning that the opposition party made known its position on the matter in a letter to prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, on Wednesday evening.

“We are minded to support your nominee for president providing that she meets the qualifying criteria as outlined in the Constitution,” John said in reading the letter sent to Skerrit. “Further, in this regard, we request that you furnish us with a copy of her resume and arrange a meeting between the nominee and the leader of the opposition at the office of the leader of the opposition in order to facilitate early completion of the consultation process.”

He said if the party is not satisfied or something is not right then it will meet again to make necessary adjustments and decision to move forward, even naming its own nominee.

John noted that the Constitution made it clear that the prime minister and the leader of the opposition must consult on a joint nominee for president and if an agreement is not reached, then an announcement is made in parliament that both sides did not agree and “then the 14-day period kicks in.”

During that period, John said, the prime minister, the leader of the opposition and even three parliamentarians can present nominees.

Parliament is expected to meet on Thursday morning.

The government presented its new nominee for president after Alix Boyd-Knights withdrew her nomination because of, according to Skerrit, fear for the safety of her family.

Boyd-Knights’ nomination was greeted with severe criticism by many in Dominica.

Meanwhile leader of the UWP, Lennox Linton, has announced a meeting, originally scheduled for 5:00 pm near the state house on Friday to protest the nomination of Boyd-Knights, has been moved to Lagon.

The meeting , now scheduled for 7:00 pm, will, according to Linton,  put into perspective events of the week.

“It is a very happy time for Dominica, something that  we can mark as a victory for ‘together we will,'” he said.

Stop playing politics. Everyone who gets a job is suppose to do so if they meet the requirements that allows them to get that job. In the Dominica constitution there are requirements for this post as president. The UWP is not in opposition to Mrs. Lafond appointment. You guys must stop trying to divide the people. They are simply saying that if she indeed meets the requirements as listed in the constitution then they will support her fully. Jeezzz

If the UWP can find nothing constitutionally wrong with Ms. Wallace Lafond as the nominee, they should just move on and join the Prime Minister on this one. Ms. Lafond’s qualifications speak for themselves. Can you even count the number of CHS, Grammar School, St. Joseph Campus, and Goodwill JH students’ lives she has touched? Hallmark couldn’t produce enough thank you cards.

Don’t waste time fighting with the PM. You have too many bigger battles ahead of you. Where are you with preparing for the next election? Work with the Freedom Party so you can build a true opposition in the House. There’s too much work to be done to be engaging in foolishness. In the meantime, the PM is miles ahead of the UWP.

I will say it AGAIN, no matter who it is, we want a change in the current administration. Ya’ll keep saying Lennox not qualified. Allu forget two of our prime minister had to die before we got the one we had there. Was he qualified? he is qualified now because he have that to put under his CV, “Prime minister of Dominica for rhe past X amount of years”. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Lennox wont run the country alne, remember all administrators have advicors. Allu think is Skerrit that really running the country, all alone, hahaha, ya’ll must be joking! Get a grip my fellow Dominicans, be real. We need achange. Forget about party and policitics, admit it, things could be better, just admit it. No matter what, we must hustle but if things were a lil lighter or easier, we could relax more. CHANGE is a MUST!!

Here is a Leader of Opposition, a PM in waiting according to our constitution, a shadow PM who cannot command a respectable position in the executive of his party. He has been unceremoniously relegated to the position of Vice President of the party. What “Majji” is that? What is the function of a Vice President of an opposition party? Now he is asking for a meeting with the nominee to be held at his party’s office. No doubt he will have around him those who orchestrated his excile to this almost non-existing position. The world knows Hector John did not ask fo that meeting. His handlers have so demanded so that they will find an excuse to withdraw their support of the lady.

Hector must know that the only reason he is still the Leader of the Opposition is becuase the UWP does not want to anger the people of Salisbury. That is the only reason. And the only reason too why Isidore is still a senator is because the UWP fear the wrath of it supporters in Mahaut. Hector must now behave like the person with the real power – the constitutional mandate to weild political power. Challenge Eddy and Prevost to withdraw their support, if they are man enough. But we know who the puppet master is in thios regard.Unfortunately, Hector is only interested in the little opportunity for his name to be called as the one who is consulting with the PM.

No one has said they disagree with the proposed nominee. So, let us all be calm and let the process, in accordance with the Constitution takes its course.

Don’t know why some of our people on both sides of the isle continue to create waves, and deepen a pointless enmity over the process.

No wonder the late Rodney King once asked, “Can We All Just Get Along?” There’s much to be done by you people, be you DLP, UWP DFP or Independent. Your brand of politics has become a cancer that’s killing the good old way of life we all once knew in Dominica. That’s a shame eh!

Nothing wrong with that ! Everyone must still remember that”Change Must Come” and that, massive, dignified change is being led by Dca’s most famous high school drop out. Who would have thought? But the same people who are critizing him are moo-moo on their comrade Mr. Mudaro in Venezuela who was a bus driver before taking over the presidency.

Congrats to Mrs. Lafond and avoid the politics.

ABK resume was posted and you all still had a lot to say about it, so why ask for Lafond’s own now. Even if it is in black and red some will still have a problem with it, because is not UWP that nominate her. Had it been UWP who nominated Mrs. Lafond, they would not ask for resume. Up till now they don’t have a candidate or UWP just afraid of getting the same reaction that they gave to ABK, of their nominee?

I heard Tony tying to ridicule Mr. Linton because the opposition has requested a resume from Mrs Lafond. They have been asking Mr. Linton as UWP boss to present a resume, now the opposition is requesting a resume from Mrs. Lafond they have a headache. When Mr. John talks about constitutional requirements ,I reckon he must be referring to the allegation that Mrs. Lafond is a resident of the United States, if true, she cannot reside out of the U.S for one year or could loose her residency.

@Woy, Woy: Although we live in an English speaking country it is apparent that the language is beyond the comprehension of people like you. For your enlightenment I will quote the relevant part of the opposition leader’s comments“We are minded to support your nominee for president providing that she meets the qualifying criteria as outlined in the Constitution,” The qualifying criteria spoken of is in keeping with the constitution and has absolutely nothing to do with a CV. No one has questioned the academic qualifications of the new nominee yet you guys always try to spin things with your politically biased and warped minds with perpetuating untruths and innuendos.

Here is Mr. Lennox Linton’s CV, the most intelligent politician in Dominica today. Man of the year 2012. Because of his investigative skills, he had a dimpled face man having to repay the treasury of Dominica approximately $500,000. The man who has the Prime Minister running scared of a national debate. The man who exposed the true owner of the villas in Savanne Paix. The man responsible for exposing the famous Bin Boreball and Fertiizer Boreball. The man who has become such a senation that for two consecutive months his name was mentioned no less then twenty times per program on a particular Radio Station in Dominica. His most Honorable next Prime Minister of the beautiful Island of Dominica, Mr. Lennox Linton from the village of Marigot.

Requirements needed to meet a “title” which generally requires lil or no involvement. Yet, to run a country which requires such a vast need for education and exerience, especially in this modern world and changing times; we do not value requirements and a sound background with the necessary qualificatiosn to go with the skills.

IF we are to move forward, we need people at the helm who can not only stand up locally, but can go internationally and shine on the stage.

we shouldn’t have noone who cannot be put in a situation to logically address issues. I think we need someone who is highly educated and not only understands politics, but economics and social policies of the emerging world.

we need to think big and think ahead.

Dominicans are too shoo too flam and in the moment.

Neither of these men are FIT to represent my interest as a Dominican, and I cringe at imagining them making an impact not only locally or regioanlly.

NONE has what it takes to lead Dominica forward

Not Skerritt and definitely NOT Lennox

  26. Putting it right
    September 12, 2013

Mr. Hector John, you must think for YOURSELF and not let anyone tell you what to do. Yes, you can be open to advice and direction, but you MUST have a mind of your own to sift things through.

The Constitution provides that “The Prime Minister shall consult with the Leader of the Opposition as to their joint nomination of a suitable candidate for election as President”.
If they agree, then the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition submit a letter under their joint signatures to the Speaker who then informs the House and declares the person duly elected without putting it to a vote.

There is no mention of providing resume and arranging meeting with the candidate.

You must acquaint yourself with the provisions of the Constitution so that WHEN your so-called leader tells you to do something, you can stand up like a man and argue your point.

That is why they by-pass you. Instead of spending all your time on facebook and twitter, educate yourself

i am of the view that hector John and the uwp is acting to childless and continues to demonstrate their in ability to govern this God Bless Nation.

the idea of arranging meeting with Mrs. Lafond is not spelt out in the constitution. it only requires that you agree with the nominee or not.

that delay tactic of arranging meeting and want copy of CV is unwarranted. you Mr. John has stated that she taught you at school, and therefore u of all should know the caliber of Mrs. Lafond.

you call for CV is not off your doing but your leader who for now, does not have a say in the business of the Parliament.

The UWP team really consists of jokers and dividers. You are asking for the qualifications of Mrs. Lafond, however, you did not give your supporters a chance to choose their leader, it was forced upon them. Have you presented your supporters with the qualifications of Mr. Linton? I forgot, your party is lacking, don’t do it but let me do it. Hahaha. Look Jokes.

Please do not tell me he can speak and pass on messages clearly or that he is honest and has integrity. We are not interested in talk, we need action, not the kind that won ‘t elevate us as a people.

But Who asked for qualifications nor? The delegates decided who they wanted as leader, what more do you want? Will the general membership of the Labour Party be making a decision as to whether they wan skerritt to continue as leader of their party? Seeing they didn’t have a choice in the first place.

Hello DC, it looks like your not aware of how the leadership was chosen by the UWP. The People are the ones who made there choice to have him as leader, he was nominated and the people spoke, he was give the Green Light, so before u speak and sound like a fool, get your information correct. i understand why your so bitter, imagine the DLP has a bounch of Educated Men and after 13yrs all they can account for is Roads and a stadium and if have a degree and thats all you can produce in 13yrs i will make my chances with the man who has common sense. and DC if Your not in dominica to contribute to our development best advice stay out of our business. You are being fooled my friend. Roads are MAJOR development. Stadiums, running water for the entire population, elecricity, fisheries complexes, hotels, geothermal plants, coffee processing plants, abbatoirs, education development, new college campuses, schools, police stations, scholarships, ict training centers etc. etc. ALL MAJOR DEVELOPMENT.

@DC: The same goes to you…….. Although we live in an English speaking country it is apparent that the language is beyond the comprehension of people like you.

    6. D Lady is a member of National Chorale and has never missed an Independence Celebration singing her heart and soul for love of country. And by d way we expect members of the National Chorale to get well deserved meritorious service award!!!! You cannot stop dat.

Why are you attacking Hector for simply following the rules of the constitution? Did you see him indicate he has any issues personal or otherwise with her? Some of you are just hell bent on destruction then blame others. So what if she told him about his uniform, wasn’t that her job, you should learn a thing or two from her about reading and understanding before jumping and running your fingers. If Eddison wife is from Barbados that automatically makes him have allegiance to Barbados, then that would mean thousands of Dominicans at home and abroad you are married to foreigners have allegiance to those countries or islands! jackass

Are you dumb? Doesn’t he have a right to conduct matters the way our constitution asks? The man is just doing what he is supposed to do. Consultation MUST take place! Consultation does not mean sending anyone a letter. There is a process that has to occur.

Ignorant Dominicans get me so upset!
