UWP Vieille Case hopeful apologizes for ‘silence’ on issues

Birmingham said his silence has dragged Vielle Case into poverty
Birmingham said his silence has dragged Vielle Case into poverty

The man who is to battle prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, in the Vieille Case constituency for the United Workers Pary (UWP) in the upcoming general election has apologized to the people, saying he has remained silent for too long on matters affecting the constituency.

Alexander Birmingham laments his silence saying that it has caused the people to sink deeper into poverty.

“I think I have stayed quiet a little too long,” he told a UWP press conference last week where he was officially presented as the new candidate. “I think all the time I spent being so quiet and so cool, I think that has deepened my community and my constituency into deep poverty. I am sorry.”

According to Birmingham, he was called to the task “a long, long time ago” by people who meet him on the streets and say “I think you should be in politics, you know.”

However, he said, he had remained on “the low side.”

He vows to create jobs, re-establish sports, and revive agriculture in the constituency.

He pointed out that he will be there for the people 100 percent.

“I am going to be there for you people of Thibaud, Penville, and Vieille Case 100 percent,” he noted.. “You call me, I’m there, you need something and I’ll be there to answer you. If I can give, I give. If I cannot give, I will bring it up to those who can give and table your concerns to the people.”

He said his approach will be an integrated one and all heads will work together “to form a plan for the constituency”.

Birmingham is originally from Penville and is the eldest of four children.

He attended the Portsmouth Secondary School and at the Trinidad and Tobago Hospitality and Tourism Institute where he majored in Hotel management and Accommodation.

He has been employed at the Fort Young Hotel for the past 15 years as night auditor and also said he is a freelance accountant.

Political leader for the (UWP) Lennox Linton, described Birmingham as a “very brave man.”

“We are behind him 100 percent,” he stated. “A number of surprises are in store with this election that is coming up. We have our eyes on Vieille Case and we think that the representative for Vieille Case has done enough to disgrace political representation for the people of Dominica and the Vieille Case Constituency.”

IF we put all that negative energy together Dominica would be such a better place. I am not for red or blue with that said i think the current administration is doing a good job. We need a first class hospital and we will be ok. Alex might be a great guy but he is not winning politics in Vieille Case this time around or anytime soon but i wish him the best.

BIRMINGHAM bro, hold strong. Nothing comes easy without a fight.
The people of the Vieille Case constituency are fed up with Skerrit.

  11. June 30, 2014

Alexander, first order of politics is to NEVER apologize unless you are at FAULT for something. I understand your concern, but DO NOT use the phrase “I apologize” again because you are NOT the reason Thibaud, Vieille Case, and Penville, are in the state that they are in. Those who have have it all, and those who do not have may never have.

On another note, I am glad that there is someone interested, hopefully, in those Villages to assist in making improvements. Honestly, these Villages should be CLEANED.

One would think since Roosevelt is from Vieille Case, he has to drive through Thibaud to get there (home), and the MAJORITY of the people from Penville (approximately 80%) are on HIS SIDE (WELFARE) HE would be a MUCH BETTER REPRESENTATIVE. Well, he do not have to because HE KNOW/THINK that his VOTES are SECURE. HE is TOO COMFORTABLE/CONFIDENT. What he apparently do not know is that NOT ALL that was BORN and RAISED LABOR will DIE LABOR.

WHO FEELS IT KNOWS IT. VOTE!

I dont usually comment on you all ‘politrics’ but i am curious. Why should he have to go to Skeritt to ask for job? This is my ONE MAJOR problem with this Govt. Avenues for employment should be created not avenues for a dependent and begging society. STOP giving hand-outs MR Prime minister and contributing to a begging society, instead create employment. People of Dca, the truth is if you become too independent then you wont stand for crap. This is the reason when we are kept dependent. We are no longer slaves to the white man…….. We are slaves to a system run by fellow black men. SMH.. I am not a fan of ‘politrics’ so do not try to affiliate me to any party.. thank u

Shows how much you understand the nature of governance. Show me one, any form of government, or political system, anywhere in the world who, does not offer its citizens some type of socialized relief.

In fact, on mere observation, you will see that even the great United States of America – the most advanced country the world has ever seen – acknowledges that if it was not for government assistance to the needy, this country and its citizenry would not meet the description of being the richest country in the world.

It is US government assistance – and they are many, including section 8, food stamps, tax breaks, earned income credit, school lunch, granting of grazing rights, agricultural subsidies, subsidizing research and development, and the list goes on – why this country is doing so well.

Don’t fool yourself, the US economy is a mix of social programs, intended to assist the poor and needy, and capitalist policies to help generate investment and drive private industry.

At least give him credit for standing against the mini Mugabe of the constituency and country.

The negative comments clearly demonstrate how politically immature a lot of our people are in 2014. No doubt, there are many who would like their PM to stay in power for the next 50 years, once they get their crumbs of bread while they remain in poverty. And that’s a tragedy to say the least.

A brave man indeed! Why would any decent person want to be so misled? Why would Birmingham allow a political novice to entrap hi in the manner he has been trapped. Penville is the power base of the Prime minister. Prime minister Skerrit has brushed aside every opponent since 2000. Alexander believes he can do better? His first speech into politics is to offer an apology? Perhaps his leader should follow suite. I agree with the self acclaimed novice leader. There will be many surprises in this coming election. Alex is one of those and he is very early at that. I just came form Roseau and chanced upon a conversation between two individuals from Penville, One is a close relative. Here is what she has to say and I paraphrase. He is my cousin, my aunty son. He is a nice person, but my vote is not for workers. A vote for Alex is a vote for workers – ah wa ah wa!! I am not leaving what I know to go after what I do not know. Not this time Alex – not with a novice. Penville is where Skerrit does defonce’ people wi!

    • louisanne
      June 30, 2014

Utter rubbish. Wasn’t Skerrit a novice in 2000?

      • Northerner
        June 30, 2014

When Skerro was first elected as Parl rep, he was posted as a junior minister in the Ministry of Education. That helped him learn the ropes of the civil serrvice bureaucracy, parliamentary proceedings etc. and to be in a position to respond to the call to be a full minister when the opportunity arose after Rosie’s death. He served as a minister for 4 years before he was again elevated to the position of PM following Pierro’s death. He used his years to learn so that when he would be given a greater task, he had a head start on things. see the difference between him and the novice. When the novice became leader he could have taken the opportunity to serve in the house. he chose not to. Perhaps he did not want to estrange any constituency with the de-appointment of Ronnie, Green, Danny or Bazil. He has the perfect opportunity now to be appointed Senator to learn the intricacies of parliamentary procedures. In similar fashion to how he ended his high school days, he still does not want to subject himself to learn and thus grab the opportunity to serve in the parliament. I am sure with his command of the English language, he can make a significantly better contribution to the up coming budget debate than Monelle. She will not be permitted to red from a prepared script. He has again gone flat on another opportunity to learn. It would seem that unless he is the leader he will not follow. So much for his self confession of being a novice. Test me again.

    • woy woy
      June 30, 2014

well let Skerrit defonce’ still, Notherner. let him defonce’.

    • June 30, 2014

      I totally agree

    • June 30, 2014

You said and I quote from your conversation with that cousin – “He is my cousin, my aunty son. He is a nice person, but my vote is not for workers. A vote for Alex is a vote for workers – ah wa ah wa!! I am not leaving what I know to go after what I do not know. Not this time Alex – not with a novice. Penville is where Skerrit does defonce’ people wi!”

However, the focal point on this piece is ” I am not leaving “what I know” to go after what I do not know.” This make NO SENSE at all. I think this is one person who is SATISFIED with its situation, AS IS. I think that anyone who is NOT SATISFIED with their way of life would want to make IMPROVEMENTS regardless to whom is at the helm.
