Youth formation centres before correctional ones – MP Prevost

Prevost

Dominica is rapidly losing its youth to migration, gang violence, drugs and other delinquent behavior and although correctional facilities are good for them, it is not as important as “Youth Formation Centers”.

This is the position of Norris Prevost, Member of Parliament for Roseau Central.

In a recent statement, the MP said he highly commends community leaders responsible for the Londonderry Camp Rescue Centre, a facility focused on correction and rehabilitation of youth, but noted that “government’s recent expansion of the State Prison is a further admission of the worsening situation among our youth”.

Prevost said the National Youth Empowerment Village proposed for Dominica Club, High Street area, would be a Youth Formation Centre. “A safe place with security, discipline, coaches and support where youth can go after school and when they have left school, to socialize, recreate, learn both social and technical skills as well as improve their discipline,” he said.

He suggests also that the National Youth Empowerment Village could also be the headquarters for the National Youth Council (NYC), the Youth Business Trust, National Association of Youth in Agriculture (NAYA), Small Business Unit, and other similar youth empowerment-intended initiatives, by both government and civil society.

“Should government fail to revive these former youth formation facilities in the capital, government would be condemning our youth to crime and correction centres, including the State Prison,” Prevost said.

@will and come again: what the man kids have to do with that? The man made a valid point and a great idea and you talking about his kids? If his kids wish to stay wherever they are what the man can do about that? Your point is ignorant and out of place.

This would be an excellent project for the Opposition to lead. I recommend reaching out to people in the Diaspora for support and funding and get these Youth Centres off the ground. The government of the day cannot be held responsible for every aspect of development. Other sectors of the community both at home and abroad can make a significant contribution toward youth development.
