DNO POLL RESULT: PM rally speech rated as “poor”

pm pollIt appears that the majority of readers who participated in a DNO poll were not impressed by prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit’s speech at a Dominica Labour Party rally held in St. Joseph in May 5.

The prime minister was the featured speaker at the event.

In his speech, which lasted over an hour, Skerrit spoke about a number of projects which were discussed before including the building of an international airport, the construction of a Chinese-funded hotel on the public works site, the transformation of Roseau, the acquisition of a boat for the transportation of agricultural products and the export of bulk water from Dominica.

The prime minister also revealed two new projects, namely, the construction of a state-of-the-art indoor sporting facility at Stockfarm and major rehabilitation in the town of Portsmouth.

He did not mention an election date and also took swipes at the opposition United Workers Party (UWP), especially its leader, Lennox Linton.

DNO sought to get an idea of what readers think of the prime minister’s speech and how they would rate it.

We asked, “Did the prime minister deliver? How do you rate Skerrit’s speech at the DLP rally in St. Joseph?”

Readers were given the choices of rating the speech as poor, excellent, average or good.

A total of 1,668 readers participated in the poll.

907 readers (54 percent) rated the speech as “poor,” while 428 (26 percent) rated it as “excellent.”

211 reader (13 percent) thought the speech was “average” and 122 (seven percent) rated it as”good.”

DNO’s poll is NOT a scientific poll.

I am not labour and I defiantly not a UWP fan…Mary Euginia Charles was the only PM I know that never stole from Dominica…now she gone to RIP I will not take part in any politics in Dominica only if someone like her comes along …
All for their pocket and bashing one another the pm speaking like he never had training on how to address ppl. Lenox Linton pretending to be a level headed but if u look closely he got microphone planted into his ears repeating what is being said to him him through them…
You may disagree with me but that’s how it is, this is how I see things and say as it is… Stick with the devil you already know..

The point is the PM is if anyone is waiting to be swayed by a unifying speech from the PM, well this person will have to think again.

The PM is simply not a persuasive speaker, he is not articulate, and his speeches are never properly prepared.

  5. May 16, 2014

I am indeed Quite disappointed in the way people take the view of others and want to crucify them for it. Everyone has an opinion and the right to say what they think. stop hating on others. I too thought that the speech was poor. not because i am a labourite or workers but because it just was. I am concerned about the development of people. this is what i want to see. no more hand out. Lazy and ignorant Dominicans.

So what? I am not impressed with this poll and the result. DNO, why did you conduct this poll? I am suspicious that it was conducted on behalf of UWP who asked you to conduct a poll. This is bias on your part.
For instance, two people hear a speech. One state that it is good and the other states that it is not good. People are of different opinion. We are not of one heart and mind. We also have different understanding of what was stated. It occurs all the time. Therefore, this poll is unfair and inaccurate.
The majority of people who rated his speech as poor are not the PM’s supporters. Is this not to be expected? Note the comments on your Website of those who support UWP.
I do not know why a poll had to be conducted about the PM’s speech. When UWP leader and party members go about making speeches, are polls conducted? In any case if they were, their supporters would approve whether or not their speeches were poor.
DNO, some of us are broadminded and view this matter in a different light. The PM relayed his speech and that is that. Why critic him and cause further divisions? Are you trying to gain sides and votes for UWP? It appears obvious.

I was the first to say that this speech was worth just 30%. It was not just poor, but extremely poor. Every other word was Lennoxx Linton, Lennox Linton, Lennox Linton, and the same gutter stuff.
Who wants to listen to such _________……
SKERRIT IS A VERY POOR SPEAKER.

    • Osanna Mowanga
      May 15, 2014

Skerrit needs to stop just talking about Lennox Linton and go and learn to speak. He is such a poor speaker> after his speech the majority of his supporters who listen to him will not be able to tell you 5% of what he said. He needs to stop focusing on Lennox and focus on becoming a better speaker. His level of speech is very poor.

Your are in complete state of delusion as to the percentage of the population who are really satisfied with the DLP. Reality is the people of Dominica spoke May Day the People of St. Joe spoke. I guess the DLP holds a better Rally so they came to the DLP Rally helping make the DLP look better around the world and they look very bad. Very well done for the few who infiltrate the Rally; that shows us the DLP is for all Dominicans and I am sure CHANGED many minds as to which party is better organized and better suited to continue to run our country.

It should not surprise any of us that some non labourites would go to learn the truth, and if any shirts were thrown, they were done because opposition members realized that Labour is working and Labour is the real CHANGE they were looking for, Who can blame them? Not me. They now know they have a difficult choice ahead of them and they have no choice but to make it for themselves and for DOMINICA. DLP is the right choice, difficult as it may be for some

  20. Lougaoo Mem
    May 15, 2014

Thanks DNO! It may not be scientific but surely speaks volumes of the speech and the deliverer. Say as they may, his supporters care less about what’s on here until they get to understand where we shall end up if this government is not stopped in their track.

Lots of promises and China as the motherland to design, finance, construct while our people are unemployed, but expect to pay back the loans through taxes. I’m confident the promises shall not come to pass with this government because of their reckless and irresponsible governance style. Wonder if they are in tune with “China’s relationship with its neighbors? Hmmmm.

DNO, your survey clearly indicates the people minus supporters, and not pleased with the current gutter politics the DLP is orchestrating and promoting in the country. Continue taking the pulse of the nation, good job eh!

Most of the people commenting on DNO are the hard working people who feel the pain of hard work everyday. They have a better understanding of economics (basic) and policy. The ordinary man out there who does not understand such, is more interested in his immediate needs (LPO,a cheque etc) and makes the majority of the population. Mind you there are many hard working folks out there without access to technology but sadly don’t understand how politics is played.

At least DNO is honest, by stating..”It appears that the majority of readers who participated in a DNO poll were not impressed by prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit’s speech at a Dominica Labour Party rally held in St. Joseph in May 5. The emphasis here is on READERS WHO PARTICIPATED, looking at the blogs and thumbs up/thumbs it indicates that the majority of DNO readers are UWP supporters, so the result of the poll is not suprising. Unfortunately for the UWP DNO is not a Polling Station.

    • Anonymous
      May 15, 2014

I agree “DNO is not a Polling Station” but I believe the comments and views presented by DNO readers represents the opinion of a wide cross section of the Dominican population.

If you look at other polls conducted by DNO including the poll regarding the UWP decision to boycott two independence activities in 2013 (53 percent voted no: they will not boycott the two activities) suggest that the results of all polls conducted on DNO does not support the mandate of the UWP.

      May 16, 2014

I think the poll was biased. I do not vote based on polls. Polls are not accurate anyway. They only stir people up, cause them anxiety and also deceive them.
I also do not vote based on a political speech. It is not as if there is a debate. People should also not vote based on a debate. Even though some people are intelligent, some of them are not smart to know this.
Vote based on, what the government has done for the country and not on your emotions. Keep your eyes opened including your mind. If you fail to do this, you will be in for a lot of trouble and unrest in the country. Make good note of my words. I do not speak/comment uselessly.
