Isaac, Fontaine, on board with UWP

Joseph Isaac
Joseph Isaac

It seems certain that businessmen Joseph Isaac will replace Norris Prevost, the Opposition United Worker’s Party’s (UWP) incumbent parliamentary representative for the Roseau Central constituency, in the next general election.

From all indications, all that remains to be done is the rubber stamping of that decision at the party’s delegates conference in September.

This, following announcements by Isaac, that he is now the new candidate for the constituency which the UWP is holding on to by just three votes.

In the absence of any official confirmation by Prevost, Isaac told Dominicanewsonline in an interview on Thursday, that he has the support from the executive of the UWP.

“The support is across the board. It is at the management level and the constituency level in Roseau central. It is also coming from supporters of the DLP in Roseau Central,” he said.

According to Issac, “It’s over 15 years now the people have been asking for me and lately the discussion has intensified. I have always had the desire to represent my people. I bring a lot to the table. I came from a family of sport people; I also bring professional experience in the area of small business and export development. I also bring the expertise of an entrepreneur,” he said.

The 44 year-old  Isaac said he is also confident that he will retain that seat for the UWP.

Isaac is not the only political first-timer to throw his hat in the UWP ring.

Fontaine
Fontaine

Former IMF economist, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, has also made clear his intention to contest the Grand Fond/Riviere Cyrique seat for the UWP.

“I’m looking very much to be a part of the next general election” he told Matt Peltier, host of Q95’s Hot Seat on Thursday. “The people of Grand Fond have been assured of that. They know that. I’m looking forward to working with a team of people from the United Worker’s Party that can make the change that Dominica needs and I’m really excited about it”

The Washington-based Fontaine who said that he is now working on some projects with countries in Africa,  indicated that he would be back in Dominica, some time in September “to touch base with the folks on the ground and then start to build, start to strategize or continue, we’ve already started; continue to strategize on our way forward,”  Fontaine stated.

Isaac and Fontaine bring to three the number of newcomers who have publicly confirmed their decision to contest elections on a UWP ticket.

The first was Lennox Linton who will be replacing a retiring Edison James as the candidate for the Marigot constituency.

Elections are constitutionally due in 2015.

Editor’s note: We wish to acknowledge the omission of Higgs Adams as another UWP newcomer who will be contesting the Soufriere seat. Knowledge of his decision has been public for sometime now.

As a person born and raised in Dominica I am not very happy regarding our policy makers in this country; I am not happy with our political climate in Dominica. I believe that our “think tanks” need to focus on some of the following:

    1. A road-map towards addressing our trade deficit. It is a critical issue for economic recovery.

    2. Money’s donated from “friends” should be utilized in sustainable development for e.g INDUSTRIES – let us import apples and grapes to make box juices for export, let’s use our mangoes, guava and other delicious fruits going to waste, with many of these industries young people can be gainfully employed.

    3. Effectively curb crime to create a secured environment for investment.

    4. Research and usage of natural energy instead of being dependent on oil. Geothermal is very controversial as there are pollutants which causes acid rain, however, we should invest in solar and wind energy.

    5. A realignment of our educational goals in order to suit international standards, when we think about education, it must be with the aim of operating properly in a global village. The African psyche has been depleted of a thorough knowledge of self – we must incorporate a sound ancient African history and morals of sound people from our ancestors who did something for the world – in that the psyche of the African Caribbean child will be filled with self worth, enlightenment and ambition. When we are robbed off the knowledge of ourselves we are given the characteristics of our oppressors and this is dangerous.

There are a lot more that meets the eye.

The following is an excerpt from a BBC Report on Venezuela and is relevant for us in Dominica. It speaks to the fact that Mr. Chavez made very off the cuff decisions sometimes for political gain which actually had negative impacts on the Venezuelan economy.

In that report, it is said “Time and again, the president would make major decisions on an ad hoc basis, often during the course of his rambling and unscripted weekly TV broadcast to the nation, known as Alo Presidente.

He was particularly prone to quick-fix solutions in economic policy, resorting to regular currency devaluations, expropriations of private firms and inflation-busting public-sector pay rises rather than tackling the economy’s underlying structural problems.

This fire-fighting approach continued even as Mr Chavez lingered on his Cuban sickbed, with Vice-President Nicolas Maduro implementing a 32% devaluation of the bolivar in February.”

Hugo Chavez leaves Venezuela in economic muddle
    By Robert Plummer
    Business reporter, BBC News

    “The impact for the region

It certainly doesn’t seem hard to uncover evidence of waste in government expenditure during the Chavez years.

But the overspending doesn’t stop at home. In an effort to spread the influence of his Bolivarian revolution, Mr Chavez allowed Cuba and other countries in the region to benefit from cheap deals and soft loans under the Alba and Petrocaribe programmes.

The next administration will have to decide whether or not to continue funding that extensive network of petro-diplomacy.

In the meantime, most countries in the Caribbean, already suffering from a decline in tourism because of the global economic downturn, will be hoping that Venezuela’s economic lifeline is not about to disappear.”

Another issue which is concerning in the Dominican context is whether or not the Dominicans who have been given houses, have also been given titles of ownership to these houses or properties. I say this because Mr. Maduro has said that when Mr. Chavez handed over more than 200,000 homes to the poor for free, that he did not intend for them to be fully and completely paid for by the Venezuelan government. He is now calling for those persons who received homes, to now pay towards those homes. Many are now in a state of fear as they were under the impression that these homes were completely free and are now fearful that they will be unable to pay the required amounts. None of them apparently received certificates of title for legal ownership of those properties which they were given keys to and which they subsequently occupied.

what the UWP Has to do is to regroup and get some honest and solidly well educated men and women to come up with a winning team and make sure that they deal with the issues affecting the state and how they can make a difference. Its time to read Dominica of this this slavery, cabalism, favouritism ,and disgraceful government who has nothing to show over all these years. Dominicans need to ask themselves a few questions:
    1) Is this a government for the people?
    2) Is this government open and transparent regarding matters of state and especially all these allegations of comess and under the table activities for the rich few?
    3)Has the economy improved ?
    4) Are these ministers really interested in the people or are they there just to get fat and have a good time, build big houses and drive lovely cars….
Loooking around Dominica, not one thing is being done to improve the lives of the youths besides sewo and all these foolishness.
Most of these ministries have failed to deliver the goods and the manifesto remains just a comfort to foool. Its it true that< Dominica has only threee cardinal points? North, South and West? Loook at the state of the roads and backwardness of the eastern district, one would say its like a place for livestock… Is this the way they treat folsk who voted for them… Yet those who voted for them always saying labour labour labour……
Its time to ask the government to report to the people cause its been alleged that projects are given to the boys and friends of the party…….
This Government is playing party politics and not representing the state matters…. They are forver in campaign mode…….
So UWP start to work out things and apply goood pressure on them, force them to answer questions. This Government has expired long time …………. Time for change….. but not change for the worst but for the better…………
Oh: time to get id cards so that those Dominicans in foriegn who come down on chattered flights wont come and vote………
To may pal reps who doesn't even know what their job entails…… And they all neeed to go on a weight losss program so that their minds be sharp and allert…….. Change is coming !

Is not that same Thomson Fountain(1)that tried to be leader of Labour but was rejected (2) He tried freedom, in my presence after Charles Savarin was removed as leader it was that same Thomson Fountain that said give him 3 more years and he coming to lead freedom Party, to date he never returned now because he see’s the opportunity for leadership in the UWP he coming.so therefore Thompson Fountain is nothing more then an opportunist, the only thing he is interested in is Prime minister Fountain is a double bottom drum he beating on two sides. And when he get his beating he will still run back overseas because those fellars don’t have Dominica at heart just study all those UWPits that loose elections they on the next plane out like Peter Carbon, Earl, Doreen, Norris Charles and the rest

Why do people here insult others simply because they support a party and say that they do? Are these people saying that for another person who is not supporting what they believe must be lazy or foolish, as they do not support their party? Why don’t people respect the rights of others to support who they wish to without cursing them. People all always say all what is wrong with Dominica but the biggest problem I see is people here don’t respect the rights of others it’s as if they want to force their beliefs on others. With that said, say what all you want but I giving this government 2-3 more terms in office because I don’t wish to be fooled again into thinking that politicians who outside talking going to come in and do any better. The present government have made many mistakes but atleast they have the experience. Therefore a new party would simply come and have to make too many more mistakes before they can gain the experience to do better. In an island as difficult as Dominica to develop I believe a government needs alot of time to do work. Countries like the US and Uk have had their democracy for a very long time so hence the country is strong so they can afford to change government more often but we need time. The UWP is now rather a new party so there is no guarantee that they can just pick up the ball and run with it and who can’t see that must be living in dreamland, where that is. It has never happened in the past and certainly won’t happen now if you were to follow the history of Dominica you would notice under every government people cried out about poverty and so to migrated.

    • >>>>>>>>
      August 11, 2013

@Anonymous You are right that people on island do not respect the rights of others.
Can you imagine that a Prime Minister is telling the people of a country that “They are too Free”? Go to Hell! Go to Hell! Go to Hell!!!!
Wicked morons like you see nothing wrong with that? Are you a Skerrit yard fowl? Are you a Skerrit slave picking crumbs from under his table?
The problem in the country is people like you who are aiding the corruption in government that has failed and is failing Dominica.
Guess if you are not lazy, you would have some independence of thought, and would be able to write in a sensible way. I HATE CORRUPT LEADERS!

I know both men and their backgrounds very well. However,I doubt that they can win given the climate in Dominica.
Remember Dr. Donald Peters tried the same tactic to be the head of the Dominica Freedom Party. How did that work out? Not very well.
The Dominican public still in my opinion, does not fully appreciate local citizens who spent a number of years overseas before returning home to assume major political leadership.
Their credentials and education are above board. The political game is a cold-blooded one. Will the Dominican voter elect them? Only time will tell.

That’s the great thing about Democracy we are all free to vote for who we think will move the country forward. Educate our people do not buy votes with a shoot of rum. We are better than that. lol….uwp had a great following on the delphis forum before the last elections. I really thought they would have won the elections. I suspect the uwp has a much wider percentage of the ‘online” market in Dominica. But how much of that market makes up the total voting population? I’m not sure, but suspect it’s a small portion. Think of it, the older persons trend to lean towards dlp, and most of them are not online.

        August 11, 2013

Sir or Madam , there are old and young people who are not using the on line forum and who are UWPites and who are also DLPites but what you must also say is that there were DLP imported vote from all over the world which has never happened in Dominica’s politics, which was not taken in to consideration on the delphis forum before the last elections. really i did not like some of the uwp people but now when i see how wealthy some ministers in the dlp have become in just are short time with $4000.00 to $5000.00 monthly, so i said to my self if i love my Country i should not vote for the dlp.

    Hmmm, interesting.

Isaac have a good intellectual and sports background, but somehow he don’t come across as a people’s person too much.

I believe that he should have waited still and start doing the ground work first. That seat there is very ‘iffy’, considering Prevost only held on to that seat by 3 votes and a last minute breaking of the boycott to answer the roll call in Parliament. Boy politricks huh?

All I can say is that it is new blood, I do hope it takes UWP and Dominica on whole, to a new direction in politics. Because we done know that the old way isn’t working. It was well overdue that these guys pass the mantle to younger more vibrant contestants.

As for Lennox Linton, this man has been the leader of the Opposition in Dominica for the past how many years.

A person’s person is one who can lift his people from poverty, give them employment (jobs), elevate their standard of living, elevate their quality of life, give them good health ,recreational, and social facilities, etc etc, etc,… This is what Isaac is all about. This is what makes him a persons person, and this is what he is bringing to the table.
A person’s person should not be GREEDY,CORRUPT, OR AN INVITERATE LIAR,NOT BE INVOLVED IN UNDER THE TABLE DEALS, ETC, ETC, ETC,….A person’s person is not one hiding wealth hither, thither and yon (It will be found one day).Isaac is not in that of politics, and this is what makes Isaac ahead of the others in the CORRUPT CABAL,led by Skerrit and the gang of lazy, corrupt, greedy and incompetent clowns.

We hope not a violent one but a peaceful one. Elections world wide are becoming more interesting and filled with anxiety over which Party will be the elected one.
Last week Thursday Toronto had 5 by-elections. There was one in the riding I reside in. I voted for my favorite Party. This Party did not win but it is the elected Canadian Federal Party which makes up the Federal Government.
I believe next year Spring (as I heard) we will have an Ontario Provincial election. This one should be interesting to see if the present (temporary) Ontario leader will be ousted. It was once my favorite Party but not in the past few years.
The Ontario “male” Premier recently resigned. After being premier for three consecutive terms, he could not stand the heat. He failed Ontarians, in that he squandered $8M of Ontarians taxpayers’ money on a failed project and lied about it including other failures.
A proclaimed lesbian woman was elected at her Party’s Convention to be the Party leader and premier until a provincial election is called. This extremely hurt my heart. She does not hide the fact that she is one. These days and sadly so it is the path the world is going and some, in their immoral ignorance do not relaize that they are going down with it.
As A Catholic Christian I could not vote for such a person who obviously will pursue her lifestyle agenda.
Last week, her Party lost 3 by-elections. I bet there are some people who will not vote for her because of her lifestyle. This tells us what may happen in the next Provincial election. God help us in Ontario and to vote wisely for a good government and a morally model one.
All by-elections throughout Ontario were conducted in a peaceful manner as also other elections.
Dominicans must learn from this and other countries where elections are held peacefully, conducted in a dignified manner and with no incidents/violence. May God help Dominica and nationals accordingly.

 Some of you make me laugh. I noticed some are not pleased with you but you are honest. I respect your views. I gave you thumbs up – not down.
Your comments led me to comment as follows:
Politicians must know that if they are elected, they must take their position seriously and conduct themselves appropriately in their personal, social and public life as morally role models.
They must comprehend that their position is not meant for their personal status, to promote it or to obtain a government/party salary with all the amenities.
They must be people person, possessing that type of personality.
They must recognize that their position is not a popularity contest.
Politicians must reach out to their constituents, the rich, middle class and poor. They must also be people of integrity behind closed doors and in front of them.
They must show themselves to be by taking an interest in their constituents.
This is the problem with some politicians. Once elected, they ignore their constituents. They also project preferential treatment.
They should also assist to eradicate crimes in their riding.
From time to time, they should visit their constituents, informing them that they have access to them by visiting their office, making an appointment to see them to voice their concerns, hopefully respectfully and also by writing to them, requesting acknowledgement and a response.
The politician in turn must respond accordingly. You have an assistant who could type your response.
They must make their constituents feel comfortable in their presence, important and useful, that they are contributing to the welfare of Dominica. Encourage them and keep them involved in local matters of concern.
Occasionally, especially when the circumstance calls for it, at a convenient time, they must hold town hall meetings or whatever they prefer calling it. Hopefully constituents will attend. Encourage them to attend which is for their benefit.
They must also counsel criminals or insist that the department which is responsible for them do so.
They must also counsel and help the youths in their constituency to eradicate juvenile delinquency, that they attend school and concentrate on their studies. Youth respect for themselves, for others and obedience are keys to achieving this.
If they have fulfilled that, who knows, in the end Dominica will be a happier, peaceful and safe country as it were in those days of my youth to adulthood and that of others.
Last but not least, if politicians do not honor their obligation to serve their constituents as expected of their elected position, they have failed their constituents. They should know that God will hold them accountable.
If they decide to campaign for another term. will they be re-elected? It depends on the constituents’ satisfaction or not.
Having stated these instantaneous comments, :) in this manner, Dominicans will be pleased with their politicians and re-elect them. Dominica will also be a peaceful and safe place to reside. Need I say more? You know the rest. :) God’s blessing and peace!

I agree with your take on humility; yes indeed! It is our attitude of humility that God uses to exalt us, but that is the problem with us human being–we do not know how to remain humble and to allow God to do His Work through us–whatever the work He planned to do though us.

And so, when and if that is done, we take the honor ourselves–but God hates that habit of ours.

So He says that He will use the lowest or the most foolish things, in the world, to bring down the great, the mighty, or the wise–so that no flesh shall in His presence. Praise the Lord

Dear Norm, I disagree!!! ‘A few good men’????? No way sir!! Good men do not stand for nonsense when they see it! Good men do not remain within an organization full of corrupt politicians because they want to maintain their jobs or positions! Good politicians, when in positions of power which are becoming more and more corrupted, will jump ship because they recognize that their responsibility is to the people who voted them in, the population on a whole, those persons whom they represent and for whom they should be seeking better lives and more prosperity, better health care, jobs and better living standards. If the were ‘a few good men’, they would realise that if they exposed the truth, that their constituents would appreciate their honesty and would vote them in again. After all, the reason that you put yourself forward for parl rep is not to become minister but rather to have the opportunity to represent your constituent’s interests in parliament. A ministerial post is therefore icing on the cake!! These gentlemen you refer to as ‘a few good men’ are arrogant, unable to stand on their own on principle, opportunists and persons who say one thing in private and another in public when it suits them. We do not need people like that in politics! We need persons who are HONEST, HARD WORKING, DEDICATED, HUMBLE AND ABLE TO STAND ON PRINCIPLE even if it means losing the job as minister!!!! People who will work for the best for their nation and sacrifice their financial gain to do so!! People who, like Leblanc, started with a simple house and car and ended with the same, despite his time in service. People like Mamo was, who are willing to live in their own homes and drive their simple cars to work rather than wasting LOAN money on a state palace!!!! People who are genuine and people of sacrifice!!! Tell those ‘few good men’ that when we needed them to be just that, they failed the nation!!!

Those of you with negative comments, we need you all too. We all are Dominicans. We need to work together to save our country. Remember Dominica does not belong to one man or one idea. Dominica’s politica lanndscape has been always changing and we must change with it. In 1980 Mamo won 19 seats and by 2005 the freedom party did not win one seat. In 1980 DLP had only 1 seat (Mike only) and by 2009 they had 18 seats. In 1995 UWP had 11 and by 2009 they had 3. If you get my drift. So Labourites, Freedomites, UWPites, Papyites, Paraites, we all are Dominican so let’s try our best to save our country. Party politics goes no where because one year we freedom another year we workers another year we UWP.

Very good Team, i think Mrs.Williams would be the Best choice to lead a Fresh looking UWP..

She is a moderate balance someone who can attract new voters including females across the board.

Linton will only appeal the the workers base fully, but he will be unable to win over labourites, Dominicans don’t vote on issues…

Personality and how they come across towards a person is a factor you can’t leave out in Dominica’s politics….

Mrs.Williams if i am right is a Catholic by Religion we all know the stance that religion played and still plays in the Dominican Politics

so i think the broad base of the UWP should think Long term and not get excited because a gentleman is excellent in bring across issues on the air.

Many folks around dominica including those in the “Yes we Care” aspect would gravitate more towards Mrs Williams as Leader of the Party rather than Linton….

Sep 1st at Castle Bruce the UWP voting grouping should certainly go for Mrs.Williams i wil be there from the Laplaine end…Best of Luck!

For a very long time now, most people have been calling for the UWP to change leadership and candidates. Kudos to them for finally listening … although my belief is that those who are “stepping down” will continue to be the face of the party and will dictate what happens.

Having said that, this by no way changes my belief and support for the Hon. Prime Minister and the Dominica Labour Party. For the past years, PM Skerritt has undertaken a rather ambitious agenda to bring development and progress to Dominica. We don’t have guess – we all have eyes to see it. He has implemented social porgrams to helps those among us that are most in need. I could list so many achievements of this administration (but I’m mindful that this is a post to an article and not an article). So, Dr. Fontain and anyone who wants to run may do so. It’s their constitutional right. But as for me, I am supporting Labour and looking forward to continued development and progress in Dominica.

I welcome the additions but I would still like to have people like Mr. Prevost around for the wisdom. Prevost is a good man, and whether or not he contest the elections I would really like to see him continue to be part of the UWP and also part of the next group of people forming the new cabinet after the general elections.

I think in my honest opinion Mr. Prevost should continue to make his contribution. I believe also Mr. James is going to stick around. As a young professional I know we got a lot to offer but one of my greatest work experiences is when I worked with very experienced and knowledgeable superiors. I see Dominica is in one breath celebrating senior citizens but in another breath trying to kick them out of the system.

I say welcome to all the young and vibrant persons stepping forward to make a contribution but at the same time lets celebrate and embrace the more senior people around can and are still willing to make their contribution.

A good mix is the way to go. We saw what Dominica has endured first hand with uncensored reckless youthful leadership.

Dr. Fontaine is grest economist who has tremendous experiences in countries where problems with reference Balance of Payments (BOP). He has the skills and the know how to put remedy in place to slove BOP problems and with the assistance of Mr. Issac who has lots of experience in Exports Related Growth. • Hmmmmmmmmmmm
      August 11, 2013

Infrastructure is meaningless without jobs!!!! Meaningless with independence both mentally and financially. That is what we fail to recognize and that is what the Skeritt lead government is taking advantage of. They know that our people, if impressed with the physical development, will forget about the failings of their government in other areas. Our people are largely unable to understand fully the financial decisions and the implications of those financial decisions taken and so that is not what is assessed. What is assessed is what can be seen physically and the impact in terms of economic activity or growth as a result of all that has been physically laid down goes unchallenged. So if infrastructure is put down and looks good, but has not income or job generating value to it, this is not recognised by our people and so the country appears to be developing because of that which can be seen around you, yet it remains stagnant in terms of economic activity and all that is growing in the debt!!!! Lmao……Dear ‘looking’, is that the best strategy that you can come up with??? To tell persons to ‘vote for your JOBS and not OUTSIDERS’? WOW!!! You are a complete joke my friend!! What you are effective revealing is that you are one of those persons with no backbone, with no ability whatsoever to stand firm for your country and to fight to save it. You are essentially saying ‘garcon shut your mouth and work with the system ignoring the corruption eh boy, or else you might lose your job!’ People who think like you are the biggest obstacle to the country getting out of the mess that it is in and are actually the greatest help to those who seek to rape the country of all its assets for their personal benefit. And I guess that you would say ‘I AM DOMINICAN, ARE YOU’? Lol………You are telling people to remain supportive of a corrupt system by remaining quiet in order to maintain their jobs while those whom they keep in power get rich from that very system and keep them on low waged salaries and the rest of the country in a state of poverty and dependency!! Well, you better think again because with that mentality you ain’t going anywhere but up the steps of the financial center to stand in line and say ‘thank you daddy Skerro. Please give me a five hundred nuh….I will keep you in power. I love my PM’! Take your foolish attitude and spread it elsewhere…..Dominica needs a totally different mindset that that which you are promoting!!! Thank you…….

It happens to applicants in Canada, Us and obviously elsewhere in the world. Jobs are scarce. Are you aware that the Internet, technology and the ever increasing systems update have eliminated many jobs? In bygone years jobs were easy to obtain. Not today. You are not alone. ADMIN: The rating system is designed by WordPress, which DNO uses to facilitate the hosting of the site. DNO has nothing to do with how it works and the mechanics involved. A comment gets low rating based on the amount of dislikes it gets from readers. It is interesting to note that last week we were accused of being a DLP website. Every week we are accused of either being pro-UWP or pro-DLP. What does that say?

Dear DNO, I would like to show support for your work! You guys do your best to inform us of news and current events. We read, we comment and we ‘agree’ or ‘disagree’ thus creating the ‘ratings’. I believe that DNO to a large extent is the pulse of the people. One can only ‘agree/disagree’ once and so it is a true reflection of how your readers feel about issues. So keep on doing the good work as we appreciate your contribution and we appreciate the opportunities presented to vent our frustrations and to express ourselves freely and without negative repercussions!!! Good work DNO, we salute you and your hard working staff!!! Thank you for your contribution to press freedom in our country……

Poor DNO always getting the blame. Some people love giving thumbs down, if they do not like what is stated. This does not mean that the blogger is wrong. It depends on the mentality of some people, some of whom may not like to hear what is correct. Take it with a grain of salt. Those who comment must develop that attitude of who really cares?

My advice to UWP is to get a currently serving school teacher out of either San Sauveur School or the C/ Bruce Secondary School (you know who they are) and all will be well. Another good choice is a now retired police inspector from the area (living in NY) who people are asking about and a prominent media person from the area living in the city but will only vote for them under a UWP or Freedom ticket. In other words, they “doh” want laybar but also want a good candidate, not just a candidate. 8)

I believe a move to bring a Winning Team before the electorate is a brilliant one. This is the era when qualified, tested professionals should embrace political governance and not continue to leave it to the loud-mouthers and rum-shop gossipers in the villages and towns. But, I have my reservations about Mr. Isaac being able to hold on to the seat for the UWP. Do we know what Norris Prevost did to take and hold the Roseau seat? It was not only his money; his charisma wins people over. Isaac does not have that charisma! Nor does he have what it takes to feed the paros every Sunday. Nor is he known by the elderly folks of the city or the settled business and property owners. Prevost defeated Alvin Bernard because Bernard was little known among the less fortunate as well as the elderly in Roseau and Prevost’s charisma dominates those groups. With Isaac now in the race, I believe Bernard will defeat him.

No Town or village has felt the pain the Skerrit DLP has placed on the backs of Dominicans as like Roseau, the heart of the country. Yes it is true that Bernard had a very good run last time around, but the high level of joblessness and poverty people experienced the last few years under Skerrit, it is going to be difficult for any right thinking Dominican to vote Bernard or anything that represents the DLP.

      • August 10, 2013

Not again the people in Roseau do not want ALVIN AND HE KNOWS THAT. We have been asking for our playing field for our children and thing has been done, no jobs for we the youths, no housing program in place for us, SO WHAT VOTE FOR HIM AGAIN NO WAY?

    • Papa Dom
      August 9, 2013

Don’t be silly, of course he is known. If you take a poll of young people in Roseau more of them will know him better than they do Alvin Bernard and the older people will know his father who was affectionally known as ” moso pied”. So u have it all wrong my friend.

Dear Frank Talker, I am optimistic about Isaac. I know him well and he is a hard worker and very dedicated to his country and its development. We are not all the same so it would be nice if he could be seen to be charismatic as Mr. Prevost is. However, I think his qualities will shine through. He is a very genuine person and if he puts the effort in to meeting the people, doing the ground work, walking the streets and meeting people in their homes, I think that he will do well. He is also a Roseau man, very well known by the persons 45 and under as a man of the community. So I think that he is an excellent choice……he just has work to do!! Wish him God’s blessings!!!

Show me one of these politicians who have been involved in some programme for the less fortunate. One who have a background for organizing and helping people. I will be suprise if you can find one. They all just pop up at election time and want to represent people. They come from all the politicall parties. Self serving people.

  76. Tri-State Beauty
    August 9, 2013

The words of our national anthem penned by the ever thoughtful Reverend W.O.M. Pond in the third stanza beckons unto us to be responsible Dominicans, each taking up the mantle to build, defend and protect this great island we have been blessed with.

Come ye forward, sons and daughters,
    Of this Gem beyond compare,
Strive for honour sons and daughters,
Do the right be firm be fair,
Toil with hearts and hands and voices,
We must prosper! Sound the call,
    In which everyone rejoices,
“All for Each and Each for All

Having stated the above, I want to implore my fellow citizens to stop the verbal attacks and constant character assassinations everytime somebody responds to the call of duty to serve Dominica. We ask of people to come forward instead of yapping on the sidelines, and when they do, instead of paying attention to details, and messages of upliftment, some idle minds amongst us engage in slanderous and malicious attacks on these people for no reason. I’m also asking politicians particularly Roosevelt Skerrit to stop making loose comments about people, less his fan base comes on the net and elsewhere and repeat what he himself and his accolites know to be lies about said persons. At the end of the day it is a democratic process and people are free to vote for the candidate of their choosing. candidate. I am sick and fed up of this mud slinging and personal attacks on people. Issac was Ok until he decided to stand up and take a public side. That is his democratic right, likewise Thompson. Stop spreading propoganda against people for politics. Then you have the same ones running their traps about christian nation and God fearing when it suits their agenda. ENOUGH!!!

If you call people out on foolishness you are UWP and every deragatory term, if you say Skerrit has done something good, you are a boomboomfly. Can we show the world that we have the capacity to be civil, cordial and respectful of each other for once? Must the running of the affairs of an island be watered down to maypuis and threats? We can do better.

    • Hmmmmmmmmmmm
      August 11, 2013

Dear ‘Freedom of speech’, you say that no party is perfect? Well let me tell you how I feel about that my fellow Dominican! My father was a minister of government alongside Eugenia Charles. Sixteen years in government. There were problems along the way, I am sure. But there was LEADERSHIP! Miss Charles was influential, well known and respected, someone from a ‘privileged’ background in the minds of many, but was someone of the people! Someone with a strong mind but someone who mixed with the population, who went to the market (even as PM), someone who, while she could safely, drove her own car (a little Mazda 323) to work herself with no bodyguards. She led by example. However, I was never indoctrinated to ALWAYS vote Freedom or to ALWAYS profess myself to be a ‘Freedomite’. I therefore can today speak freely and support whomever I think worthy of my support! that is how I feel Dominicans need to be thinking!! Vote for the person whom is most genuine and whom you feel will work honestly for your interests and in the interest of the nation. The problem which I have with the present regime is that THERE IS NO LEADERSHIP!!! There is not group of people working together in leadership of the party or the government. Any time, for some strange reason, that credit has to be given, all of them ‘in leadership’ fall in line to praise the great LEADER, the one and only (IF NOT SKERITT THEM WHO), to chant his praises and to say that he is the ONLY one capable of negotiating and/or raising the funding necessary for development. No one seems able to question him. Then you have strange happenings such as ministers being recorded in conversations expressing how deceitful Skeritt is, then they fall back in line to sing ‘we shall not be moved’ at his instruction, then go back now to ‘support the people’ in a struggle for land where they defy the leader openly, yet the leader does nothing (probably because it is all a calculated plan to deceive the people and win the seat). He will then fall back in line after the election is held and gone. So, I say all of this to say that you should be thinking calmly and doing that which is necessary for good governance practices to prevail…..HOLDING YOUR OFFICIALS TO ACCOUNT!! Vote for the person whom you feel is best, not for the party or the political personality or leader whom you most like!! VOTE, AND SPEAK FREELY!! HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. Encourage debate and encourage others to hold politicians accountable and by so doing, you will ensure that Dominica has a better political and economic future……Remember that Dominica is not ‘TOO FREE’ but instead needs to be freed from those who feel that ‘THIS COUNTRY IS TOO FREE’. Fight for your country and its people to be free and independent. Peace and love to all!!

As for us in Portsmouth they have used us, abused us, and now they are telling us where we have been leaving in Georgetown for many years is now illegal while they cannot see what they have been doing that is illegal. We the people are ready for change and this time around we from Possie will not give our heart and soul to Skerrit in the name of “Labour” as we did in previous years. After 15 years of good governance under the DFP, we the people decided we needed a change. The consequences should be etched in our collective memories. So inept was the UWP, that after one term (four and a half years) they were dismissed. Do we really want to repeat that mistake?

        1. Is shame you haven’t got eh. Ask Dominica’s most backward thinking government ie the DLP why they could not challenge the UWP on performance matters in the 2000 elections.

        2. Ask Dominica’s most backward thinking government ie the DLP why they used the lie of corruption to deceive the nation in 2000….

Dominicans are putting the right people in place who will take our country back to the glory days of the 1980’s.
With those two gentlemen, we are going on the right path to properity for all.

This is one of the best comments i’ve seen so far. I am in the diaspora and I am also heavily leaning in the direction of moving back to DA to use what i’ve learnt, use my contacts, and emply my expertise in the fields of global trade in the food and beverage industry to use in DA. We have great potential, producing food for our own consumption as well as for export. I have many ideas that could be tested. I know methods and procedures in getting food into US, Canadian and European markets. These are skills I believe that can be used in DA. Too many times I hear officials telling farmers to pland plant plant but they’re not offering sufficient help in getting what’s planted to market. This is what i’m an expert at – trade, logistics, regulatory issues.

      • August 10, 2013

My friend, you have my thumbs up–this is the kind of attitude which I admire in people.

We, Dominicans, need to stop the habit of talking so loud and saying nothing–such is what I am reading here from the majority.

Those kinds of talks do nothing for the development of Dominica and the welfare of her people.

Until we start thinking or being completely concerned about our survival, in Dominica–not about who is the Prime Minister, and so on and so forth nothing will happen for us, because we need to work as a team–both leaders and citizens–focused on victory for all; all for each and each for all!

my only advice to you is to look at the technology you bring back and ensure that its the most suited for our situation, both from an economy of scale situation as well as the price of energy. take into consideration the fact that if you are going to be producing in dominica that you should focus on export as our critical mass is just too small. partnership is key as well, don’t try to do it on your own, rather look at collaborating. i myself am definitely going to return to try certain things, i think we have some great opportunities but we really need better governance and leadership.

      @ real Posie,
Have you ever said anything good about UWP on DNO. have you ever criticized any the DLP did . I have read most of your comments on several topics on DNO. and without you stating you from posie i could tell that you are POTO labor.

You also spend most of your time defending the DLP and criticizing the UWP rather the being partial about the prevailing issues in Dominica.

Tell me real posie are you satisfy with the level of job creation in Dominica( employment), the manufacturing sector, agricultural production, social safety nets ( are they properly executed and targeted), poverty levels, health care, tourism policy ( no international airport), drugs and crime, ( see how much Paro in posie and gangs just pass by the st.john’s school), Sports and youth development( 15 years and counting to light a park, we still have to find money to pay for light to play basket ball after 6pm , the amout and size of playing field in Dominica, one basket ball/ net ball court to serve Tee Bay ,Glanvillia , Portsmouth, Zicak, Chance, Lagoon, De la Rosin, Grange , Gutter, Cotten hill, Tan Tan, Tucarry, Cottage , Capauchin, Clifton).

Are you satisfy with our land use policy ( which lands are earmarked for commercial, and residential purpose. what about this housing revolution- right now the man in ports mouth say he will take the money for the wooden and add to it to build a wall house. Yes just his step get damage when the government was doing the side walk now they giving him a new house.A man that can afford.Anyway if i talk more about that housing thing i will loose too much friend .

look at the small business money, man get money to fix boat go SMX and waste the money the boat still purple turtle (may his sole rest in peace). some get for bar and chicken farm and cannot show nothing. thanks god my partner rescue the pavilion bar.
Think I’ve just lost ten friends but country before friendship.

Real poise look at these simple issues and tell me if the people of Dominica don’t have a right to ask for a change. Tell me one good reason why we had a decline in growth when our major trading partners is on a rebound and more so when most of our PSIP is funded through grant.

I am Ted Lewis, De larosin , lagoon. Graduated from PSS 1994. I did not married for green card so i don’t live in the states but in Antigua and Barbuda.

The difference between you and I is that i use my right name on DNO because i know that i will never come here and say things that i cannot prove.

I Guarantee you that i know more of what happening in Dominica than you. Try me.

I have been making my contribution to Dominica from a very young age. Were you there when i was the youmgest person Among PAC ( Portsmouth awareness Committee) need i say more. Were you there when we (PAC) mix cement and build side walk in Portsmouth. Were you there when we(PAC) at Bazaar , promoting excurtions , keeping jam etc to raise funds to assist the church , poor house etc. Were you there when i use to clean the drain from by my yard all the way down to the sea most Saturdays. Were you there when we made numerous trips disposing garbage on MR Truck on community day of service. Were you there when Donald and i use to organize two dollars bread , a pack of cube cheese and a bucket of grapefruit to go cut PSS park with Cutlass so we can have a place to play. Were you there when while Mr. Alexis best principal of government school sent us with our uniforms to carry blocks from chambo to the school to build the net ball court. Do you know that i made the most trips and my name was mentioned in assembly.

Were you there when at age 13 i went by Astaphans with all coins to buy shirts, print them for cloud Reckers fooltball team. Then on a weekly basis higher laywar to take us country side to play games. Organize teams to come Possie and play aginst US.

I could go on and on my there. Remember i migrated at 16. So Watch your self when you speak to me about helping develop Posie. My heart and soul is with Dominica. I am a Trained and practicing Economist. Ian and Reggie are my good friends even though i am not a supporter of the DLP regime. We drink, lime chat and argue with each other. I gave them lots and lots of advice and ideas. its either they dont listen,my advice was not right , or timing for implementation not right i don’t know . i am not saying i have all the answers nor do i know .is either they don’t learn or don’t have the testicular fortitude to stand up in cabinet and demand from the government what is it the people of Portsmouth need to improve our social well being.
I am sick and tired ox excuses , excuses, or the pm this and the pm that or the global recesion this or that. I am tired . I mean reggie going for a 4th term really , i mean really, . are you telling me that no one else can do the job like if reggie dead that’s it for lagoon. i mean give me a break people. Wake the hell up. we need new representation in the north.

We want jobs , we want to be able to attract our professional back to Dominica. We have doctors ( Nick and kendal) , accountants( Diane wade and Shaboo) , Engineers( boogy , vandy etc), Telecommunication / mas communication ( Irvin , Eustace etc) Economist ( Ted Lewis). Those are few professional i know that would return to lagoon only if we had sustainable job that could pay us decent wages .

I am looking at this from a neutral point of view. I am still wondering if any of these two parties can convince me to vote them. I am registered for voting but mine is an undecided vote still.
