Prime Minister Skerrit calls for exemplary performance if Dominica is to survive after Hurricane Maria

Residents line up for water in Roseau after Hurricane Maria

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has warned that Dominica can only survive in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, if every Dominican is exemplary in the execution of their duties.

Speaking at a special meeting of permanent secretaries and other senior public officers on Thursday, the prime minister urged public officers and Dominicans in general, to dutifully report to work in the name of Dominica.

“Not just to come to perform the task that each of us has performed over the years but to report to duty in the name of Dominica and for the sake of current and future generations and even if you were to leave, you have family back here so you will always be connected to this country.”

Skerrit told the senior public officers that the initial survival modes of shock and relief must now be replaced by their exemplary performance. He said this is the only way the country is going to survive.

“All of you here, you are the leadership of this country; it is not the prime minister alone; leaders must lead. Leaders do not have the luxury of complaining and the failure of one of us in here will cause the failure of all of us and, obviously, our country,” the prime minister noted.

The senior public officers were meeting to prepare a working response to Dominica’s bid to become the first climate-resilient country in the world.

This is a fine example how Skerrit is in charge of everything. Having said that, one can only play this game if the majority of the citizens have no morals, no character and no shame. The story of this man is so typical of Dominica under Skerrit. For a Dollar I’ll sell my soul if that is what it takes.

Let’s ask hero Skerro why he allowed Maria to be seeded to destroy us.

You should have set the ground work for exemplary performance when you took office 14 years ago. It is obvious you have FAILED in this regard. After 14 years in office, Dominica still has the 3rd highest unemployment rate in the Caribbean. You can fool your RED CLINIC recipients but not intellectually savvy Dominicans.

Oh shut up Elizabeth. That is not the point. The point is that he is able to afford to rent a place in NY or even buy it on PM wages. It is just not possible! Why do you keep on ignoring the facts. Furthermore, he could not afford this constant travel from DA to NY on is wages. It’s the treasury that pays for it – private trips to NY and all.
Let’s assume that he earns and I’m very generous here, EC$ 120,000 pa, which makes 10,000 a month. After taxes etc., I’m assuming that he is liable for these, that would leave him around EC$ 5,000 or US 1,850 p.m. You are telling me with that he can afford to rent or buy on mortgage a flat in NY, travel at least once a month on private business from DA to NY, built a 1 Million house in Veille Case, buy land at Wallhouse, etc. Does that add up in your opinion?? Now if you come back to me and say: yes but … then I have to tell you right now already, go back to school and resit your math. Infact I’m suggesting all you DLP supporters do that…

hmmm smh it seems to me as if the prime minister was speaking to the Permanent Secretaries. they aren’t performing their duties to the required standards, soooo he is fed up . but he has to remember he controls all departments remotely. so tell me, what is the expected out come of their duties. smh . so take it the sub-standard performance of the civil servants,

I have seen PM Skerrit climbing a ladder in one of those bad places, after Tropical Storm Erika, he was not wearing a 3 piece suit to do so. I am sure that he was helping someone, for that is his nature (Elizabeth Xavier)

Elizabeth, what is in a three piece suit?

What is the big deal about Roosevelt dress in a suite, I live in America, where anybody can own better things than Roosevelt. I do not see many official walking in ninety degree heat dressed in suit, whereas some people dress in full length suite in Dominica sweating like hogs!

Right now we are in winter, I am getting ready to go and buy cow-foot without a coat on!

As for this nonsense about it is in Skerrit nature to help, that is a lie, I know Roosevelt much better than you think, Skerrit help is buying votes to consolidate his power. If you saw  him climbing a lather, that was only a show;  photo opportunity, designed to deceive ignorant people like you!

Let me tell you why I am not and cannot be jealous of Roosevelt Skerrit!

In the first place I am a man, an honest man who worked hard for everything I have  with the help of God!

Secondly, I am highly academically educated, every degree that I have I earned honestly from college and university: I have four, none was bought. My proficiencies and academical ability earned me my degrees, I did not buy a bit of paper simply because I wish to be called doctor.

Third, there is nothing Roosevelt has on this planet that money can buy, that Francisco Telemaque cannot buy, and surely what ever I own is all in my name, no one is holding or hiding any of my heard earn assets!

Finally, I do not have a stressful life, I’ve not had a headache for more than fifty years; and I do not need politics to make a living I can live by my professional skills and investments, nobody can fire me,on election day eh!

I am at the mercy of God only not man

One can be very critical of the Prime Ministers political performance, but being openly abusive in commenting, a line needs to be drawn. Being in power for the past 17+yrs, doesn’t look opportunistic to me, and as leadership goes,Mr Skerrit seems to be the best Dominica has to offer presently. Pre and Post Maria, the world knows Mr Skerrit and what he stands for , He is the face of Dominica, like it or not. When the eye weeps, the nose also weeps, what affects the eye also affects the nose. In my observations , comments from the Diaspora, contributes to Dominca’ retribution , a lot of negative reaction, “If we are wise in everything, we inherit glory, fools inherit shame” some Dominicans may not like my line , and i expect that, if we agree on everything, there will be no space for us to learn and grow.” The glory of a man, is the recognition of his strength” Mr Skerrit, needs strength to handle the barrage coming from the Diaspora. THE GODS/GODDESSES ARE WATCHING.

    December 29, 2017

Let’s forget about all the nice words PM used and concentrate on the message he wants us to get. The message he wants us to get is that Dominicas hope of surviving Maria is at zero percent as long as he remains Pm, because he is no example to anyone and cannot desplay the examplary leadership needed to build back. The 9.5 % for me and .5% for Dominica attitude seen the last 13 years sure cannot help Dominica.

  12. Ibo France
    December 29, 2017

Reality has hit the PM and has replaced the braggadocio he was using to hide his inadequacies. Dominica needs visionary and astute leadership to overcome its humongous problems. There’s a dire need to empanel a committee of the most brilliant minds, from a wide cross-section of the population and task them with the responsibility of generating the best suggestions and solutions to set the country afloat. Inclusivity is paramount for the country to rise again from the ashes.

    • To Ibo France
      December 30, 2017

If you’re talking about brilliant minds does Skerrit fit in the same sentence?
His visionary and astute leadership lead us down the sewage lines of morals, ethics , honesty, incompetence,
boldness ,corruption prior to Erica and then Maria, add yours Ibo & readers.
Boy are we in doodoo now ? We thought we were. Now ,can the opposition in contents make a difference? Certainly, absolutely not. We recall 1995-2000. what a period of BS. I for one thought
the UWP was crap then came the Neo DLP just like the UWP from 1988-present was formed by a bouyon of opportunists, characters of various kinds. We were told UWP was coming. They came and what? It was pale in comparism with a premature ejacuqlation. So we are in Bap. come 2018. I make no bones it has never been so bad here. It had outsted PJ’s ackwardness Then came the Ahfouahwees and some strays/opportunists as To Ibo france said. That’s another downhill direction for DA after a thriving 70’s then came Skerritism kept up by more parasites of the DLPand some cross overs as if they were a hybrid of car and jeep. Some former DLPites turn UWP turn DLP again only to move further to undifined and become sort of Abramoffish & representing Russian interests. First of all Mr. Skerrit, you are not a leader, as you stated, but you are an opportunist that has brought Dominica singlehandedly to its knees. Your speech makes me believe that you are about to prepare for exit because you know that you have messed up the country so badly that there is no way out anymore. In calling on Dominicans in this way now makes me also believe that you want to shift blame away from you onto the citizens. Bad form Skerrit because there is nobody to blame but you and your so called advisers and Ministers.
Maybe a true patriot with a true passion for Dominica is capable to get Dominica on the right path again. Of course it would need to be somebody that keeps his fingers out of the cookie jar as well.

In order to set a good example, there must be consistency between discourse and behavior. If one enters government as a poor struggling civil servant and gets rich overnight this is not setting a good example. There is a difference between leaders and opportunists, those who follow the mood and those who set the mood. Transparency is a key ingredient of accountable leadership and forms an integral part of setting a good example. So too is telling the truth at all times as well as respecting other people’s beliefs and opinions. By the way, what happened to the Integrity Commission?

“Roosevelt warned that Dominica can only survive in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, if every Dominican is exemplary in the execution of their duties.”

Each time that boy Roosevelt opens his mouth, nothing sensible proceeds out of it:  rubbish pops out of it every time What is the average Dominican duty bound to do. More than ninety percent (90%) of Dominicans have no job, struggles to find food, and other necessities.

One picture speaks a thousand words: Find a photograph of Roosevelt anywhere, and compare it to the people we see in this picture, and assess the difference in dress, we will find Skerrit at his worst dress cannot come close to the people we see standing like staved people waiting for their turn, perhaps to get the leavings of the caucus of some fallen prey!

If you are the prime minister, who sets the worst example in the country, by lying, and victimizing people, how can you suggest others to be exemplary. Why Dominicans do not rise against you boy, only…

    • December 29, 2017

“Find a photograph of Roosevelt anywhere, and compare it to the people we see in this picture, and assess the difference in dress, we will find Skerrit at his worst dress cannot come close to the people we see standing like staved people”

First of all what you have done above, is put down your people of Dominica, because of the way they are dressed; what is wrong with those peoples’ dressings; they are simply at their daily routine, whatever that is, they are not heading into the House of Parliament.

Well, let me tell you that if you should put on a contest to compare the dressing of PM Skerrit, with the dressings of the regular people, once again you would be defeated.

      • December 29, 2017

I have seen PM Skerrit climbing a ladder in one of those bad places, after Tropical Storm Erika, he was not wearing a 3 piece suit to do so. I am sure that he was helping someone, for that is his nature

Not only that one time; I have seen many other photos where he is dressed just like any other Dominican; whether he was at home or simply visiting his people of Dominica, young and old

Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit is not just the Prime Minister of Dominica, he can present himself just like any other Dominican.

You need to leave the man alone; you could never have the virtue of humility, which he has, for more so, for wittiness, charisma, and the Wisdom of the Spirit. No man with those characters and virtue can ever be defeated–because they favored by the Lord God.; who continue to bless them.

I am suggesting that you put down your sword of weakness; are you not tired of losing?

    • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
      December 29, 2017

Elizabeth, you need to stop: Poor as our people were over the years, of the 1950’s people took pride to tell you “I from town.” If anything they looked down on country boys like me, because we the country people could not dress like the town girls and boys!

In the 1950’s  to 2000, when the Labor Party took over Dominica, and it fell into Roosevelt hands, you could not find someone in Roseau, or from St. Joseph to Roseau looking that shabby, and wearing such dirty old rags.

If you term what I say a put down of our people, I feel sorry  for you, maybe you have no memory of how things was prior to Roosevelt, or you are just a hypocrite ignoring the truth. Elizabeth, Dominicans never experience such poverty until Roosevelt siege power in Dominica. Don’t you remember the days when we went to matinee on Saturdays how we dressed. Remember The Gay Lords Song “Lovely Dominica”, where Greg Barnis sang about Mama and Papa in their Sunday best?

  25. Dominican

Dear mr. Skerrit, this approach requires Dominicans to work in tandem and therefore you need to be proactive in engaging your opposition. It can not just be a ceasefire. All hostilities must stop if we are to present a united front. As the country’s leader it is up to you to take the initiative in this. For a start, instead of spending so much time abroad I would suggest you reconvene parliament and gather at least once a month in public session.

    • December 29, 2017

      @Dominican December 29, 2017

I have read so frequently the complaint against PM Skerrit, for the times which he goes out the Island, that is because you people do not understand anything of Life

As the Prime Minister of Dominica, do you all expect him to sit in his armchair at his office and to wait for Dominica and her people to boom out in economic, social services, etcetera? or do you all want him to send someone else –which could produce failure?

Just like the ant, the squirrel, the bees, etc must leave their homes to go out and find food for their survival, it is the same way for countries like Dominica, which does not present herself with the space that is needed for industrial functions because of its many mountains and the rest of its structure–like all of those rivers and creeks which is occupying so much space

You people need to understand the subject before you comment, you are spoiling things for those who are searching for the truth

Elizabeth, you sound like a political contortionist in fending off legitimate attacks against Mr. Skerrit’s legacy. Can you refute these factual assertions about Mr. Skerrit’s tenure at the helm of government?
        1) Poverty has risen to unprecedented levels.
        2) Dominica lags behind its neighbors in infrastructural, social and other developments.
        3) The government operates in almost total opaqueness, there is hardly any transparency.
        4) This government has been infamous for Pork Barrel Politics.
        5) Government services unreliable and inadequate (healthcare, security, sporting facilities, infrastructure) etc.
I could continue with the roadways degenerating, arable lands uncultivated, vagrants increasing, many government structures are in a deplorable and dilapidated state, and the rise in murders
Mr. Skerrit has hardly anything to crow about.

For Dominica to attain full recovery, it needs the collective effort and goodwill of all citizens and residents. For the country to achieve this goal, leadership is critical. Mr. Skerrit, don’t only say the right thing, do it! Your words and your actions are incongruous. Your leadership style needs major adjustments. Listen more talk less . Involve a wide cross-section of the community in your deliberations, then act upon the most prudent suggestions. Remember, no one man or one group has a monopoly on ideas. The parliamentary opposition and their supporters have good ideas too. They are not your enemies because their don’t support your party. Involve them! Reach out for the collective good of the country. There would never be a better time to heal the country of this bitter and destructive hyper-partisanship, that has gripped this once gem of a nation for far too long. Mr. PM, this quote for you: ” When a man is wrapped up in himself he makes a pretty small package “.

Now fingers are being pointed at the Civilians for his professional incompetence. Such inability to do anything successfully with ineptitude being rife in public office in Dominica, starting at the very top.

Upon proper inspection of this article, you can tell that Mr skeritt is fully aware that Dominica is sinking fast but is still trying to isolate himself from being the one to sink it. Instead he is making it look like individual Dominicans are not doing their job, A job that we aassigned him to do. So the way the game being played is he gets to do the destroying and we’re the ones who has to fix it back? For the longest while Dr evil has been dishing out advice he should be giving to himself. He should warn himself that Dominica can only survive in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, if he is exemplary in the execution of his duties. Smfh

That starts with you skerit. You have and continue to demonstrate a total disrespect and disregard for the constitution ,thus creating a breakdown in law and order in this country.
Remember ” no law , no constitution “, that came from you. This country will NEVER move forward with you at the helm. All efforts will be futile because of you.
So apologize sincerely, give back all illgotten gains to the country and find yourself in exile.
