The Dominica Public Library continues to make its contribution to drug prevention efforts on the island.
The institution observed its 3rd annual Drug Awareness Day in collaboration with the National Drug Prevention Unit.
Over 519 students from the Business Training Centre, and secondary and primary schools from the Roseau area viewed exhibits of various drug samples and were lectured by officers of the Dominica Police Force about the dangers of drug use.
“Drugs are having a devastating effect on young people. Substance abuse is a public health concern. It affects everyone and we are specifically targeting the schools to help them empower them to make healthy and responsible choices.
“Our young people are especially vulnerable. Drugs are dangerous and once you begin these bad habits you are at risk of becoming addicted,” said the event’s coordinator, Librarian Sylvia Toussaint.
“Drugs are expensive and when one is addicted and can’t find the money to buy the drugs they turn to crime and other high risk behaviours. We are calling on our young people, do not start if you have not yet started,” she added.
The activity was held under the theme ‘My community, my choice, no drugs.’
I am so please to see that alcohol abuse was also highlighted. Like any other drug there is a financial and moral price to be paid by any society when it comes to alcohol abuse.
that must be why Shadowflow’s ‘Rum & Party’ doh make it to finals llololol
I wish Dominica well, alas, please be drug free my people. God bless and protect DA
