“Put country first” when voting says PM Skerrit

Skerrit isays change came to Dominica in 2000 with the advent of a coalition government
Skerrit isays change came to Dominica in 2000 with the advent of a coalition government

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has told residents of Silver Lake that they must “put aside personal differences and put country first” when they head to the polls to elect a government soon.

He told them at the handing over of six apartments in that community recently that they should not be fooled by letting those who cannot give biscuits, take their bread away.

“There are people who come here at night and tell you all sorts of things, all what they could do for you, all what they will do for you. But let me say to you that you should not allow people who cannot give you biscuit to take the bread from your mouth,” he stated adding, “You cannot go and put a whole group of novice men and women to run the affairs of Dominica in the difficult period of the world and to take out an experienced, committed, dedicated and proven party from office and put the UWP in office.”

He said the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) is working for the country, “and we must continue to keep Labour in government so that these programs and these activities, these initiatives can continue,” and asked, “why would the people of Dominica change a party that is transforming and changing the country?”

Insisting that “change came to Dominica in February of 2000 when we replaced the UWP with the Coalition government,” Skerrit said Dominica has seen the transformation in all sectors, adding that before 2005, the country had no Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and today it is fully equipped and the lives of countless citizens have been saved as well as tremendous sums that they would have to spend in other countries.

When they came into office, he said, only 44 percent of primary school graduates had access to secondary schools and today, there is now universal access to education. He pointed out further that entry to the Dominica State College (DSC) is now at 87 percent, a vast difference from the seven percent before the DLP came into office.

The prime minister said his government has invested more in agriculture than any government.

Skerrit said these strides have been made under “difficult circumstances,” and because of “the prudent and responsible management of the affairs of Dominica and the extra ordinary relationships that we have cultivated through our diplomatic relations we have been able to bring that kind of development.”

According to him, the DLP has brought poverty down from 39 percent to 28 percent, reduced indigence from 10-3 percent, and the next time the poverty assessment is done for the country “the indigence rate in Dominica will be zero,” he promised.

Dominica has the same structural issues after many years of DLP leadership. To be fair, we can point to a revamped road-network, construction and completion of the Windsor Park Stadium and the Dominica State College, just to name a few.
We’re not sure whether we’re an agricultural based economy or something else.
We have some of the highest electricity rates in the region, a small population, heavy out-migration, we’re last in Foreign Direct Investment, not to mention a never ending array of taxes such as VAT, departure tax and now entry tax.
The Social Programs i.e., Red-Clinic and construction of homes for the poor and indigent are note worthy. We struggled in these areas in the past, given the dynamics of this small island nation.
However, this path cannot be the way forward for Dominica with its current high unemployment and lack of health care. A nation cannot move forward without a proper hospital, capable of caring for its citizens.
A nation cannot move forward if we cannot attract new sustainable investments in various sectors.
A nation cannot move forward if we cannot create jobs to sustain our population.
This nation cannot move forward with the state of the Airport at Melville Hall or the Ferry Terminal in Roseau.
We do not need any more moral victories or ancillary projects.

Get a job Zumba!.. A real one! It surely seems that Skerrit is paying you to respond to every negative or unsupportive comment posted about him on DNO. I assure you that you certainly have your work cut out for you. Seeing 99% percent of the commenters here, are hard-pressed to find something positive that they can say about Skerrit and his band. The fact that you waste so much precious time to respond these comments, says a lot about you.

It speaks of your insecurity, your weak-mindedness and a serious lack of wisdom and discernment. Yet, you have the heart to call people stupid and uneducated? Please take a look in the mirror. Name-calling is much to infantile for this forum.

In future, at least attempt to add something to the discourse, instead of exposing your ignorance and wearing it as a badge of honour.

One of my favorite quote from the bible is: ” My people were cut off because they lacked wisdom; because thou hast rejected wisdom, I will cast thee out of the priesthood; seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy sons.” Hosea 4:6

I will keep you in my prayers in the hope that you will soon wake you from your slumber.

My Dad(may his soul rest in peace) who hardly spent a complete day at school; insisted that before my siblings and i speak any patois, we had to learn and speak and understand proper English. It’s sad that we all speak English in Dominica yet few of us really do understand it. It’s rather surprising that it took our PM 15 years to understand that when voting at the pools we must put country first. “NOVICE?” please sir where you PM before you occupied that office?and for that matter where did you and your cronies achieve the office of Hon. before you all held the offices you now occupy. Let’s put politics asides you have articulated so beautifully all the reasons why you and your gang should not be given another chance at the polls. You offer public servants 0%; 0%; 0% what is this bread or biscuit? Yes it’s time to put an end to the era of (DLP) Deception Lies Propaganda.

I voted the DLp (Dominica Labor Party) in 1990, 1995,2000, 2005 and 2005. But alas papa god! That’s the worse my country has been. Now my party has become the dlp – Dominica Latrine Party, because they have left the majority of us with kaka vante (loose bowel) because we cannot afford to eat the bread he said he giving us. Right now we sure need the doctor to give us something better to stabilize our stomach. I going for Dr. Thompson Fontaine all the way this time.

Oh ! almost forgot to inform you/FYI this is not the DLP you thought you were with from 1990.
As you are well aware I trust. Medard the current P.M the President the Minister of Diaspora affairs, just to name 3 come straight/directly from the DFP how can it be Authentic DLP? The Authentic have been reduced to yes men and women and house slaves for want of a better anology.
After Rosie & Pierro’s death they infiltrated the leadership now it’s a leadergoat with ideas second only to Instru of the gov’t of 1995-2000. The Fountain on Mamo’s Blvd, the suggested smoked herrings for independence day breakfast.
The most very recent crazier idea post UWP’s instru is the $27.00 EC tax currently being discussed which may just be the straw that breaks the Neo DLP’s back, if rallied effectively.
Have a great day( DLPite& discontented) or what left of it.

Put country first is a noble idea. Don’t allow novices to take over government is an idiotic statement. No person has entered government for the first time with years and years of experience. Exhibit A: Roosevelt Skerritt 2000. How can the Prime Minister of a small country send his wife off to the United States to give birth to his child rather than to show true patriotism and put country first by having his child be a natural born Dominican? That indicates to us that we should not allow our children to be born in Dominica. I hope the rest of Dominicans open their eyes like me. Many people give birth outside of Dominica but the implications ARE greater when it is the Prime Minister.

Mr. Skerrit. in 2000 I owned a banana field that I depended on to raise my six children. I use to sell 150 boxes of bananas every two weeks and I created employment for 5 young men that I paid $35.00 a day. I also use to sell grapefruits, oranges, plantain, Tania, dasheen and other crops on a weekly basis. I owned a shop that was always filled with groceries all from my farm. I had my house and pickup and they were both paid off. Back then I would easily net $ 5,000.00 a month while, you were making no more the $2 thousand as a teacher. Today, all I have is my little run down house. You killed banana and agriculture on a whole. In fact I know a man from your village who shares the same testimony except that he had more than one van. His farm was in the Gomier area. Do you know him? Can you tell him life is better now that when he voted you in 2000? Today, I am poor and you have become a multi millionaire along with your friends and close associates. I sure will take your advice and vote you out! Dominica deserves better that that

Here is a true story Dominicans. In 1995, I was a true UWP. I was all blue. However, in the 2000 election I became all red, because I was very upset I did not get to OWN one of the houses UWP built in Bath Estate. I was qualified, I turned in my application and it was approved. Somehow it was given to another person who was a poto labor. Today, she is the owner of the house while I continue to rent. That same story was too familiar especially in the Bath Estate housing scheme, where laborites got them and workers were turned down. Today we see laborites getting them for free while the rest continue to struggle, Anyways, I have decided to put country first this time around and voting Skerrit and his corrupt team will be my priority.

    2. Sir, what was your financial worth (assets and money) when you were elected pm in 2005?

3.. Mr. Hon. Prime Minister, what is your true and honest financial worth today. Please feel free to include all properties such as villas, boats, backhoes, hotels, money or any other assets you may own but might be on the name of someone else, whether in Dominica or abroad?

Does any sound minded citizen believe Roosevelt Skerrit? I guess he’s pandering to his base. Little does he know that even his base is now seeing and feeling the effects of the blatant lies he inflicts on them. They’ve had enough of his nonsense. Time is now to vote him out before it gets worst.

I am a strong advocate of putting my country first, but not Roosevelt Skerrit. Action speaks louder than voice. If he really puts country first, why did he rush his spouse to the U.S. to give birth to his son? If he puts country first, why did he give the Chinese jobs/contracts over his countrymen? If he puts country first, why did he choose a Grenadian who sang praises? These lies are too blatant even in the eyes of the bamboozled.

    • Lougaoo Mem,

    Ko-ki-yo-ko!!!

Yes I. The PM is at it again. No one can doubt him that Dominica has seen the transformation from an independent minded people, to one of dependency on a system he promotes. If I lie, go check the Red clinic. We’ve seen the transformation of a system that foreigners get the jobs over the locals. If I lie, go ask the Chinese. We continue to see closures of our once vibrant local merchants in Roseau, being replaced with stores selling inferior goods that do not warrant a refund if returned. If I lie, check it out in Roseau.

I am convinced that Mr. Skerrit has lost it completely. In his mind, he really believes that life is honky dory with everybody, to include his supporters who are privileged to get tax exemption and all the goodies, bribes and crumbs that his party dishes out in order to stay in power. In his mendicant society, how can he be so disillusioned and disconnected with reality? He knows very well that his model of socialism is a total failure. I guess he has to follow the ALBA play book even though his mentors in Venezuela are crying out loudly for “HELP”

I’d like to know after the PM sneaked in an entry-tax on visitors, though he told Dominicans and the world during his budget presentation last month “NO NEW TAXES,” if they the supporters will just accept the blatant lie again and again, and vote him back in for five more years of more blows? The Grand Bay yard fowl will continue to scratch-scratch during these hard times, while he keeps one head up to monitor the wicked developments of this incompetent government.

I do not usually agree with the points of view of the prime minister but he has finally said something that I am in agreement with. Putting the country first is at the foundation of any popular election and I thank the prime minister for saying what am sure must be on the minds of every civic minded voter regardless of their political colours.
I hope his call for putting the country first resonates with people who are ordinarily labour supporters who must now consider whether their love of country should take precedence over their political affiliation. In fact, I believe the prime minister’s statement will resonate most with this political sub set. They must reconcile their love of country with evidence that their ruling party has let their country down. The economy is in the worst state it has been, possibly in their lifetime. Their children graduate from school with a lot of education but to what avail? Where are the jobs to reward them for their hard work of study and discipline?
We are at risk of losing an entire generation who have known nothing more than frustration and disappointment about their political leaders.
So thank you, prime minister for reminding those who were in doubt that their primary and solemn duty is to put the country first and to elect a government that will do somethings differently, for a change: Focus on the economy, grow the economy, stop corruption, respect our institutions, give a level playing field when it comes to justice and equal opportunity for all.
Thank you, prime minister for speaking the truth, I hope your Labour supporters heed your work. You could not have said a more relevant and appropriate thing on the evve of the elections which you seem to be afraid to call.

If this is a fact about the agriculture investment, then the of agriculture policies, infrastructure and plan is a GRAND failure.

Skerrit, we shall all take your advice but not your example. We will indeed put DOMINICA first and not party. You sure didn’t put Dominica first in the following:
    1. You refused to give birth to your son in Dominica so he could be one of us; instead you went to the USA where his bread is already baked while the rest of us have to wait for crumbs that fall from your table. Did you forget to put Dominica first there?
    2. You put Skerrit and the interests of Skerrit first, while Dominica was put on the back burner. Infact you even tried to change your nationality. Skerrit, when you were first elected by the people of Vieille-case constituency in 2000, it is a national fact that you did not own neither a car, a bicycle, or a computer. 14 years later, you have amassed more wealth than all Caribbean prime ministers whiel. the rest of us have gotton very much poorer. Did you forget to put Dominica first sir? So yes, we will take your advise but will not follow your example.

I agree that we should put the country first when voting. Among the things we should consider, first and foremost, is the state of the economy.
We should put country first when unemployment stands at 25 per cent and unemployment among the youth hovers around 40 per cent.
We should put the country first when there is glaring evidence that the current regime is more focussed on their economic benefits than the well being of their constituents. They drive expensive SUV’s and built mansions that cannot be explained by their legal income. It is obvious that they have not put people or the first.
We should put the country first when the epidemic of crime is tearing apart the social fabric and the attempted murder of a retired magistrate was covered up because of political considerations.
We should put country first when the country is drowning in debt and tax payers money is used for all kinds of political shannigans including providing fictitious jobs to party faithfuls.
And most imortantly, we should put the country first when there is creeping evidence of the emergence of a dictatorship and now may be the last chance to redirect this country which is on a course of no return if we permit this regime to run amok in their corruption, arrogance and their lust for power at the expennse of the hard working people of Dominica.
If for no other reason, Dominicans must exercise their freedom to choose a different government because the worst thing that could happen to a democracy is for citizens to become complacent and accept mediocrity and corruption in the management of their economy.
