The commercial sex trade in Antigua & Barbuda is on the rise, according to the AIDS Secretariat, with even more of these illegal transactions taking place at private homes.
Delcora Williams, the AIDS programme manager said it is difficult to put a figure to the increase, but she did confirm that this primarily exists among members of the migrant community.
“What we notice is that a lot of the houses are not occupied by Antiguans; they’re occupied by non-nationals and that too causes us some concern,” she said.
This situation is believed to be the result of the economic condition in the country, Williams explained, while noting that it appears that some individuals are resorting to what they find easiest to do.

doe let them fool you inno antigua always have whore house
I am not even going to comment on this. I think people know by now from an Islamic perspective we have a complete zero tolerance for this behaviour. Anyone who supports, participate either physically, financially or anyway possible is purely evil and this is a pure violation of women’s rights. This disgusting practice truly degrades and dishonours women to the lowest level.
For those who support this filth and to everyone who comments, I urge you to read http://www.africankingdoms.com ——->go to article and click modern slavery, read 21 century slavery and you will understand what time it is.
If we allow poverty to dominate our countries this is what will happen to our children. Do we want that to happen to our precious children? I leave this with you.
You Muslims believe in having many wives so does that make u WHAT EVER GOD U BELIEVE IN, to judge someone? Some of u Muslims see the religion as a gateway to having many wives now if u ask me that is just as bad, maybe even worst!
@ Nuine: My friend polygyny (the permissibility for a man to take more than one wife) is completely different from this situation. Most of the prophets, the most exalted men of Allah practiced polygyny. There are responsibilities and rights of all parties in that relationship. In the bible, exodus 21:10 states that if a man takes another wife let him provide for her food, clothing and shelter. In Deutoronomy talks about laws of inheritance for the wives if the husband dies.
The reality is polygyny is a very practical social science to curb prostitution. If these women were married to responsible men who are just and fair to their women, they would not have to resort to this morally degrading practice. Secondly, there are more women to men in society, if every man takes one wife, what happens to the single women who deserve companionship, love and affection?
@ LawieBawie: It may appear so on the surface however, in reality many of these women are suffering. Do you know how cheap these women felt after perhaps doing this for their first time? Many of these women who are prostitutes, do you think this happened overnight? These women are coming from sexually abused backgrounds, unhealthy self esteems which in the first place contributes to their under educational achievements. Do you think it is fair that pimps should further exploit these women for money? No sound woman with ethics, dignity and self worth would sell her body. How would you feel if your mother or your women folks were prostitutes? I’m sure you would not feel good about that. Therefore, we must be humanitarians and stand up for what is rights even if these issues do not directly hit home.
I read the article which you suggested and found it quite painful to read it in it’s entirety. I must say however that having myself visited the the brothrels of St. Marteen I don’t get the feeling that any of the young ladies who are in there was there through coercion. They all seemed to be doing their buisness as a matter of choice because many of them are low educational achievers who find it difficult to find well paying jobs and therefore resort to this lazy way of earning wages rather than taking up a more demanding job that does not pay very well. I don’t see why Antigua would be any different.
Muslim_Always–what “women’s rights” might you be referring to? I wasn’t aware that Muslim women–the conservative, “real” Muslim woman–had much of what could be called “rights” by any civilized educated human being in the 21st century. Please clarify. I don’t condone prostitution; but prostitution seems far better than the life many Muslim women are forced to lead.
Prove me wrong.
Humanist, I am a conservative muslim. I see Islam from a deep African eye and perspective, that’s another subject by itself.
Of course women have rights in Islam. Our western media has highlighted cases where muslim women are not given their rights, however, this is far removed from the teachings of Islam and oppression across the spectrum is strongly condemned. I am in a great position to speak about this because currently I am a student of Islamic law. Do you know that for example a man earns $3,000 and a woman earns $10,000, it is compulsory for the MAN to provide the woman with food, clothing, shelter, take care of the bills while the woman lodges all her money in the bank? This is her right!
Do you know the Prophet Muhammad said, education is compulsory on every male and female person. Thus, in Islam it is forbidden for women to be uneducated?
Thirdly, women have rights to earn her money, inherit property, consent or not to marriage to a particular person, take part in politics. This is Islam; 1400 years ago as well as when Islam had its empire, there were many women scholars, even today there are women scholars in Islam. Aiesha, the widow of the prophet Muhammad was a scholar.
There are many rights for women in Islam. If a society imposes it’s culture that is UNISLAMIC on women it doesn’t mean Islam is responsible. The rights of women are in bold texts in the Islamic teachings.

I hope this help.
dey makin more bum dan russia & bakin more wood dan a bakery!!
I find this story very sad. How! How, how, how can we reduce demand for this product/service? Women obviously fear losing their basic needs more than catching STDs and AIDs. Hope someone can come up with a solution soon to save innocent children who are gradually becoming victims of this trade through the actions of their parents or guardians.
legalize the thing man ,,more woman will give their man sex
NOTHING WRONG, ONCE THEY LOOK GOOD AND SELLING AM BUYING.
Thats not something new, there are many Whore houses in Antigua, which is that it is legal. Parliamentarians even go there, police even go there, Homosexuality on the rise there. Gay cruise ships docking in Antigua , woe be unto our young men. Sex Trade is alive and doing well in Antigua;
That might be true, but please get your own identity.
It is a know fact that lots of lawyers are into it big time leaving wives at home at nights saying they working late on a few cases. The wives should go work late too! Even Pasaweds patronizing too what do they do in the brofel’s if they pasa wed? Trevor should tell us.
so all u don’t even know how popular it is in dominica? MAKING BUMS is the term that we use.all u bloggers are realy PATHETIC and HYPOCRITS
Dominica just like antigua undercover… alot of our young women here are doping the same thing too. alot of foreign men coming to put board on dominican women the telling their parents and boyfriend and husband they going by a friend and they in guest house with men they meet online some of these men coming on first fligh and leaving last flight or next day
the sad thing is some of these woman using their man money to pay for them rooms and if they get 100 US$ the get plenty, the men and dem does tell them when they go back they will send them western union and it does never reach
just now allu will hear when de bomb burst i was antigua just last week and alot of guys talking about woman they come dominica to make sex with. i know for a fact a guy came from st. marteen to sleep with a woman for two nights he promise her all king of thing and when he go back he never check her, them little woman nasty and stupid.
It sound like you taking part in in that activity and something gone wrong, you trying to sell out your colleagues.
Read again what you said, those information you getting is comming all the way from another island. Be careful what you say…
they need to legalize the sex trade and tax it… make it lucrative…..
A lot of application is on file for the job opening.
That is a bulls**t reason given about the existing economic conditions giving rise to this type of activity. If indeed it is a case of the economic downturn then where are these men finding all of this disposable income to “Blow” away? My take on it is that if the economy was better these women would be giving even more “Jobs” to these men.
Prostitution is the oldest PROFESSION! Anytime there is an economic downturn, prostitution spikes! It is logical, people will always resort to what comes easy and dare I say naturally. No interview, no qualifications, just present your certified body! Well what also spikes along with prostitution is STDs, divorce, breakdown of the family, and by extension the society. Oh boy what a world to live in, but I would not want to be anywhere else.
NIKKI ever thought of Mars? The little green men there perform sex too. True, They might tickle you bt tickling can mess up your body & brain. You might even be thought of as having seizures the way your body will be moving.Little green men can be deadly. He is not from Mars but look at Woody Allen, who thought he was so deadly? So, don’t limit self to the earth even if you said world.
Just tickling ur fancy Nikki(nikita femme fatale).
Well, actually, there would be qualifications–not all people are equally endowed, lol–but yes, I agree with the rest of your post, except the idea that prostitution breaks down a society. This seems to extreme to me (I don’t know if you meant it literally, but I know some people saying the same would mean it that way). When has this happened anywhere in history? Prostitution is so common that it’s hard to imagine it not existing in society; and much of the “order” behind “society” is a facade, when you start looking at the inner workings. Prostitution, as an outlet of sorts, may be what helps keep societies from falling apart at the seams. I’m not condoning it. But the fact is that sex is so important to us as human beings–we’re so biologically predisposed to be obsessed with it–that it cannot be kept out of a society for long, and since a traditional nuclear family structure cannot work for everyone, and since not everyone can get work even in the wealthiest of societies, prostitution is just one of those things that will always happen. When people are forced into it, that’s different–that’s slavery. When people choose it because they feel forced to, that’s something we have to expect will happen at some point to some people, whether we like it or not.
wow i like this
If it for sale buy it!!
Classic supply and demand response in a capitalistic economy. I cannot see the harm, except that protection against the rising tide of STD’s should be taken when transacting business.
Lol.us next .If you can not stop it ,join it.
This is really sad that the sex trade is being fed by immigrants, many of whom must have left their homeland hoping for a better life in Antigua. If the officials care about the well being of these immigrants, and their nationals in general, they should seek to send these sex workers back to their countries. Keeping them in Antigua working the sex trade is placing many people’s health at risk. Plus, think of the moral degradation that these women are experiencing, having to sell their bodies to make a living.
Now, there are some parts of the world where prostitution is legal; e.g. in Nevada. Maybe another option for the Antiguan government is to legalize prostitution, set some standards, have regular testing of sex workers, have them pay income tax, and operate this like a real business instead of under the shadows of the law. We know that whatever is done in darkness comes to light anyway, so just bring this trade into the light.
So if prostitution is legal, does that remove the moral dilema?
i figure once you remove the stigma there will be no moral dilemma. who you going to complain to?
Prostitution is illegal but they still have the hoe house like Wendys, its not going to stop cuz to many big ppl are involved in this!!
wHAT ABOUT THEbIG pPL WHO ENGAGE IN IT ON GOV’T BUSINESS IN THE FAR EAST LIKE mACOU?
